  1. Mr. Townsend:

The official name of the UH-1 helicopter, which has probably been long forgotten, is the "Iroquois".

I wonder how many guys know that?

Actually, I thought the Army stopped using those a long time ago, for I've only seen the Marine Corps use it.

I remember seeing short body UH-1 helicopters at LZ English, the 173d Airborne Brigade base camp, with rocket pods and .50 calibre machine guns mounted on the side, and a small cargo area for carrying a few troops.

The 101st used the "D" model when I was there, with the "Dust Off" medevac choppers being unarmed.

At Quang Tri, I saw the 5th Mech using armed medevac choppers.

At the very tail end of the war, right before the 101st returned stateside, the unarmed 101st "Dust Off" choppers were painted solid white, with giant red crosses all over it.

Propaganda leaflets were dropped to inform the NVA and ask them to not shoot down these helicopters.

I still have a copy of one of those leaflets.

Here are URLs where you can view that propaganda leaflet:

  3. Gosh, I didn't know that!

I'll go check the settings and see if I can fix it, for all of my photos WERE available to the public.
