Lake 'too deep' for 999 crew

The nanny state.

FIREFIGHTERS refused to help a man floating face-down in a park lake because the water was above "ankle deep", an inquest heard yesterday.

Simon Burgess, 41, drowned after he fell in while feeding swans. He was only taken out of the three-feet-deep lake 28 MINUTES after the alarm was raised.

Gillian Hughes, 53, called 999 but was told by one fireman "we are not allowed" into the lake in Gosport, Hampshire.

She said at the inquest: "I said, 'You're having a laugh'. He said, 'No, that's health and safety'."
