Queen Anne's County votes to make English the official language

On May 8th, the Queen Anne's County Commissioners voted 4-1 in support of a bill to making English the official language of the county government.

Following the vote, U.S. English Chairman Mauro E. Mujica released the following statement:

"With the passage of Ordinance 12-06, representatives in Queen Anne's County have given non-English speakers the best possible advice to help them achieve success: become fluent in the English language. In the State of Maryland, more than 340,000 residents speak English less than very well, meaning they likely have difficulty carrying on more than a basic conversation in English. Declaring English the official language of the county does not place a limit on the language a citizen may speak, but it sends the message that English is the key to a more prosperous life in America."

In February, representatives in Frederick County, Maryland voted to pass a similar Official English bill. Unfortunately, nineteen states, including Maryland, have yet to pass Official English on a state level. U.S. English continues to work on a daily basis with county, state and federal lawmakers in an effort to encourage them to pass unifying legislation to declare English the official language.

But, we cannot do it without your help! Please, take a moment to send a pre-written letter to your state representative to express your support for Official English across the state. Or, if you are able, visit our Donation Center to make a financial contribution to help our cause.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support. We will keep you informed on the latest news as we continue to work to make English the official language of the United States!
