“Do not revive! (expletive) Obama!”

A Key West resident who police say was distraught over the presidential election results and worried about his business has apparently killed himself.

Police say they found Henry Hamilton’s body in his bedroom Nov. 8, along with a living will with handwritten words “Do not revive! (expletive) Obama!” Two empty prescription empty pill bottles were in the dining room.

Hamilton’s partner Michael Cossey told Key West police he last saw Hamilton when they watched the election results together. According to the police report, Hamilton was upset and said, “If Barack gets re-elected, I’m not going to be around.”

  1. I don't really have a way to respond to this that doesn't make me sound like an insensitive ass, so I'll just say it...

The weak will start weeding themselves out, of their own accord. We'll see more of this, not less.

  2. A short story.

When I was growing up, there was only ONE neighbor that didn't own guns or hunt, or fish. I thought that odd, but hey, to each their own. He was a wonderful guy though and would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. Long story short, when I was an adult I asked him why he'd never owned guns. He told me that back in the Great Depression his father, who had two young boys at the time and a wife, took a revolver and blew his own brains out in their garage. It was my neighbor who'd found him at age 10 or so. That incident had scarred him for life, and even though he knew guns were just a tool and he didn't hate guns, he couldn't be around them after that.

Suicide is the selfish cowards way out. That guy left two young boys and a wife to fend for themselves in one of our nation's worst economic times ever.

That guy that took those pills because someone else won the s(e)lection... if there is a hell, there's a special place for poltroons. I have no pity, and no respect for people like that.

      Agreed.

Sad story about your neighbor and I agree the man who just committed suicide did take the coward's way out, but it is not always the coward's way, for instance, as recently as the Vietnam War, the South Vietnamese leaders who committed suicide in the end did so because it was expected of a leader who failed. I certainly wouldn't do this, but I wasn't brought up to believe that way.

  3. I guess some people still think elections matter.

    1. Can't blame them for hoping, but these last two elections have proven conclusively that the fix is in and I'm afraid that there is only one way to repair it.

  4. There are people who genuinely suffer from depression or other serious mental disorders. In Western culture at least, suicide is typically regarded as a mortal sin. To me, though, condemning a depressed person to Hell for not being able to overcome depression is like condemning a diabetic for not curing himself. I assume a loving God would take that into account.

It's impossible to see inside someone else's head, so I hesitate to judge. The stated reason may have just been a trigger for a deeper condition. I had a high school friend who killed himself in college. He was a good guy, above average intelligence, decent family. Didn't see it coming, never knew his reason, if any.

Like so many things, it's more complicated than it first looks.

The ones I feel sorry for are the products of our "modern" education system and social environment who are not exposed to any difficulty or hardship or even to simply losing at a game because it might hurt their self esteem. They will be totally unprepared for what is coming. The Greater Depression will see huge numbers of people unable to cope.

It's easy to condemn them for their blindness, but almost everything around them reinforces that all is well. Even among those who know all is not well, many are not prepared. I'm some ways that is a greater failure than being unaware.

Life and people are complicated. That's not an excuse for bad behavior, but it is a reason to have some compassion for those who are weaker.

    1. Yes, I had a good friend that killed himself also. While we battle to live, others give it up with a snap of their fingers, though I imagine they are clinically insane at the time.
