GOA Action Alert: Defeat Every Word of Gun Control!

Gun Owners of America today submitted testimony at the request of the Ranking Member of the Senate Constitution Subcommittee.  GOA took a strong stance against all the gun control legislation on the table and urged the Senate to put forth real solutions to school violence -- like letting teachers and principals protect their students.

Also, GOA wants to thank all of you who participated in our online poll over the past week.  With 20,897 votes cast so far, the poll results indicate that 96% of GOA’s membership OPPOSES “universal background checks” -- and, hence, opposes the very guts of the gun legislation that is expected to move in the Senate.

Now, it's time to talk strategy -- that of the anti-gunners, and of ours, as well.

Within the next three weeks, we expect Senator Patrick Leahy's Senate Judiciary Committee will move a national gun registry bill to the Senate floor.

The Judiciary Committee bill will probably not contain the Feinstein semi-auto gun ban, and it may or may not have a magazine ban which would render most of the nation's guns unusable, at least for the foreseeable future.

But the Judiciary Committee bill will almost certainly ban all private sales of firearms -- or any private exchange where the gun buyer does not first get permission from the FBI.  And it’s this background check requirement that will inevitably set up a framework for a universal gun registry.

The Leahy bill will most certainly have a "gun trafficking" section that is based on other legislation (S. 54) that he’s already introduced.  This would turn everyone who lives under repressive state gun laws into a federal "prohibited person," as well.  Hence, if your state requires a license to possess a gun, you would also become a federal prohibited person.  Oh, and the Leahy bill would also send you to prison for 20 years for unknowingly selling a firearm to a marijuana user.  So, the next time you're thinking of selling a gun, all we can say is:  "Are you felling lucky?"

Anyway, here's Harry Reid's strategy:  He has at least eleven Democratic senators running for reelection in pro-gun states in 2014 -- and they don't want to SEEM anti-gun.  The eleven Democratic senators in pro-gun states are:  Mark Begich (Alaska), Mark Pryor (Arkansas), Mark Udall (Colorado), Mary Landrieu (Louisiana), Al Franken (Minnesota), Max Baucus (Montana), Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire), Tom Udall (New Mexico), Kay Hagan (North Carolina), Tim Johnson (South Dakota), and Mark Warner (Virginia).

All of these Democrats will vote for the national gun registry and gun licensure.  And, in exchange, Reid will allow them to vote against the Feinstein gun ban, which will be the sacrificial lamb to the more important gun control which Democrats really want.

But aside from the fact that the Democratic "non-controversial" gun control bill is, in many ways, worse than the "controversial" bills, there are two additional problems.

First, if gun control gets to the Senate floor, all bets are off.  There are dozens of horrific gun control proposals that could easily be added on the floor.  For example, a Lautenberg amendment -- supposedly intended to "combat terrorism" -- would allow Obama to ban guns for every gun activist in America just by putting their names on a secret "watch list."

Second, if gun control makes it to a House-Senate conference committee, all bets are off.  The conference could report a bill which contains a Feinstein amendment, even though neither the House nor the Senate voted for that language.  The conference report is unamendable, and, under the recent anti-gun changes in the Senate rules, there is no way to keep a Senate-passed bill out of the hands of an anti-gun conference.

THE SOLUTION TO ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS

First, we cannot allow one word of gun control to move to the Senate floor.  NOT ONE WORD.

Second, the way we keep gun control from reaching the Senate floor is to defeat the “motion to proceed” to the Leahy Bill.  (The “motion to proceed” is usually offered by the Senate Majority Leader -- in this case Harry Reid -- to bring up a bill for consideration.  The Senate quite often brings up legislation under a Unanimous Consent agreement, but if there is not unanimity, the “motion to proceed” can usually be debated, if not filibustered.)

ACTION:  Click here to urge your Senators to vote against the Motion to Proceed to any gun control bill reported by the Senate Judiciary Committee.  This bill cannot be allowed to get to the Senate floor, or Harry Reid will then have a free-hand to start his “let’s make a deal” game.

Absolute Despotism in America

It was in good faith that Americans in the South in 1865 laid down their arms in expectation of Constitutional guarantees and rights within the Union, and President Andrew Johnson naively assumed that the Radical Congress would extend peace and such guarantees to the South.
Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman

North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission
"The Official Website of the North Carolina WBTS Sesquicentennial"

Absolute Despotism in America:

“The veto of the Military Reconstruction bill was a more formidable document, consisting of some 200,000 words or more. [President Johnson] had examined the bill with care and anxiety; his reasons for vetoing it were so grave that he hoped the outline of them might “have some influence on the minds of the patriotic and enlightened men with whom the decision must ultimately rest.”

The bill “placed all people of the ten States therein named under the absolute domination of military rulers.” The language of the preamble of the bill, which undertook to justify such measures, failed to justify them.  The preamble had asserted that, in the States in question, legal government did not exist, and that life and property were not adequately protected.  The President denied that this was a true point in fact.

The ten States had actual and existing governments, quite as properly organized as those of other States, and administering and executing laws concerning their local problems.

The Reconstruction bill, he continued, showed on its face that its real object was not the establishment of peace and good order. Its fifth section….revealed….that it sought to establish military rule, “not for any purpose of order, or for prevention of crime, but solely as a means for coercing the people in the adoption of principles and measures to which it is known that they are opposed, and upon which they have an undeniable right to exercise their own judgment.”

Did not Congress realize, that such an act, in its “whole character, scope and object, was without precedent and without authority,” in open conflict with the plainest provisions of the Constitution, and “utterly destructive to those great principles of liberty and humanity for which our ancestors…have shed much blood.”

He analyzed the powers of the military commander of a district, as those being those of an absolute monarch. “His mere will is to take the place of all law….Being bound by no State law, and there being no other law to regulate the subject, he may make a criminal code of his own….He is bound by no rules of evidence; there is indeed no provision by which he is authorized or required to take any evidence at all.  Everything is a crime which he chooses to call so, and all persons are condemned whom he pronounces to be guilty. “

Such authority “amounts to absolute despotism,” and to make it even more unendurable, the district commander could delegate it to as many subordinates as he wished.  For more than 500 years, no English monarch had ruled with such power, in that time no English-speaking people “have borne such servitude.”  The whole population of ten States would be reduced “to the most abject and degrading slavery.”

NC: Southern Democrats Betrayed by Party Managers

http://www.old-picture.com/american-legacy/008/pictures/Senator-Josiah-Bailey-W.jpg

Frustrated at the drift of FDR into state-socialism and use of communist-dominated labor unions to buy votes for his fourth term, Southerner Congressmen like Josiah Bailey of North Carolina threatened a new party grounded in constitutional principles – the States Rights Democratic party.
Bernhard Thuersam

Southern Democrats Betrayed by Party Managers:

“What’s wrong, Senator [Josiah] Bailey [of North Carolina] demanded, with being a “Southern” Senator or a “Southern” Democrat?  [He] pointed out that the Southern States had cast their electoral votes for the Democratic candidate for President, election after election, often when they stood absolutely alone and when there was nobody else in the electoral college to vote for him.  But, he warned, there can be an end of that sort of thing!

“There can be an end of insults,” he said, “there can be an end of toleration, there can be an end of patience. We can form a Southern Democratic Party and vote as we please in the electoral college, and we will hold the balance of power in this country. We can throw the election into the House of Representatives and cast the votes of sixteen States.

We have been patient. We were tried. But, by the eternal gods, there are men in the South, and women too, who will not permit men in control of our party to betray or to insult us in the house of our fathers. We will assert ourselves – and we are capable of asserting ourselves – and we will vindicate ourselves, and if we cannot have a party in which we are respected, if we must be in a party in which we are scorned as “Southern” Democrats, we will find a party which honors us, not because we are Southerners, and not because of politics, but because we love our country and believe in the Constitution from which it draws its life, day by day, as you, sir, draw your breath from the atmosphere round about you.”

To be sure, national managers of the Democratic party were mildly disturbed by the Bailey speech, but not for long.  It may have been a coincidence, of course, but it is a fact that early in January, 1944, about a month after the Bailey speech was delivered, Governor Broughton of Bailey’s own State of North Carolina told the country in a radio broadcast that while there was “great political turmoil” in the Southern States, all of them would be found in the Democratic column as usual in the Presidential election of 1944.  But the “insults” of which Senator Bailey complained didn’t end and the “betrayals” continued.

On July 7 [1943], the executive board of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, a new labor body popularly known as the CIO….decreed that every Senator and Representative who had voted for the Smith-Connally bill should be defeated for re-election. And to undertake this job it created the CIO Political Action Committee [CIO-PAC].

At that time the labor leader who was closer to President Roosevelt than any other was Russian-born Sidney Hillman. Hillman had held various federal offices under the New Deal….His relations with Roosevelt were direct and intimate.  This is of significance, because Sidney Hillman was chosen to be the Chairman of the CIO Political Action Committee.  The object of the CIO-PAC at the outset was frankly that of electing a Congress that would follow the labor-union “line” and also elect President Roosevelt to a fourth term.

“We have in this country,” said Senator Bailey, “a well-organized, well-financed movement of the left-wing of American labor to capture the Democratic party by infiltration. They propose to nominate the President for a fourth term. And they are noisy about it. They propose to defeat any Senator or member of the House who does not bow to their policy of coercing the working men of America.”

Olympic Arms to New York State – Take Your Business Elsewhere

Via TSP

 Hey New York

Olympic Arms will no longer be doing business with the State of New York or any governmental entity or employee of such governmental entity within the State of New York.

Olympic Arms is a staunch believer in and defender of the Constitution of the United States, and with special attention paid to the Bill of Rights that succinctly enumerates the security of our Divinely given Rights.
One of those Rights is that to Keep and Bear Arms.
Legislation recently passed in the State of New York outlaws the AR15 and many other firearms, and will make it illegal for the good and free citizens of New York to own a large selection of legal and safe firearms and magazines.

We feel as though the passage of this legislation exceeds the authority granted to the government of New York by its citizens, and violates the Constitution of the United States, ignoring such SCOTUS rulings as District of Columbia v. Heller – 554, U.S. 570 of 2008, McDonald v. Chicago – 561 U.S. 3025 of 2010, and specifically the case of United States v. Miller – 307 U.S. 174 of 1939.

Due the passing of this legislation, Olympic Arms would like to announce that the State of New York, any Law Enforcement Departments, Law Enforcement Officers, First Responders within the State of New York, or any New York State government entity or employee of such an entity – will no longer be served as customers.
In short, Olympic Arms will no longer be doing business with the State of New York or any governmental entity or employee of such governmental entity within the State of New York – henceforth and until such legislation is repealed, and an apology made to the good people of the State of New York and the American people.

Surrounded: Alleged Cop Killer In Firefight With Police

  dorner

Chris Dorner, the former Los Angeles Police Officer, who is accused of shooting five people last week and murdering three, including a police officer, has apparently been tracked down to a cabin near the 7 Oaks area near Big Bear Lake on Tuesday afternoon. So far at least two San Bernadino County sheriff’s deputies have been shot and wounded.

“There are deputies everywhere on the ground and on foot,” said Cindy Bachman, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman.

The Los Angeles Times reports,
The shooting occurred after Dorner burglarized a home, tied up a couple and stole a white pickup truck, sources said. San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller confirmed deputies responded to a vehicle theft about 12:20 p.m., and the resident who reported the theft said the suspect matched Dorner’s description.
The U.S. Forest Service confirms there was an exchange of gunfire between officers on foot and the suspect, in the Santa Ana River drainage, north of State Highway 38 and south of Big Bear Valley. At least one officer of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife was involved, said John Miller, San Bernardino National Forest spokesman. That officer is not believed to be injured.
Dorner’s status was not immediately known as the gunfight continued.

A humble man.

======================

 http://fromthetrenchesworldreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/robert-e.-lee-248x300.jpg

The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman.

The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly—the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light.

The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He cannot only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past.

A true man of Honor feels humble himself when he cannot help humbling others.

Reports confirm that two young men (and alleged Chicago gang members) Michael Ward and Kenneth Williams were recently charged in the January shooting and murder of beloved teen, Hadiya Pendleton. According to police, the men mistook 15-year-old Pendleton and her friend as members of a rival gang who shot and injured Williams in the arm back in July.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy stated that first-degree murder charges were filed against Ward (18) and Williams (20) on Monday, Feb. 11. Just this weekend, family and friends gathered to say goodbye to the young King College Prep High School honor student, who had just performed at President Obama's Inaugural events back in January.

Genetically engineered virus kills liver cancer

Via avordvet

Genetically engineered virus kills liver cancer in Cancer A genetically-engineered virus tested in 30 terminally-ill liver cancer patients significantly prolonged their lives, killing tumours and inhibiting the growth of new ones, scientists reported on Sunday.

Sixteen patients given a high dose of the therapy survived for 14.1 months on average, compared to 6.7 months for the 14 who got the low dose. "For the first time in medical history we have shown that a genetically-engineered virus can improve survival of cancer patients," study co-author David Kirn told AFP.

The four-week trial with the vaccine Pexa-Vec or JX-594, reported in the journal Nature Medicine, may hold promise for the treatment of advanced solid tumours. "Despite advances in cancer treatment over the past 30 years with chemotherapy and biologics, the majority of solid tumours remain incurable once they are metastatic (have spread to other organs)," the authors wrote.

There was a need for the development of "more potent active immunotherapies", they noted. Pexa-Vec "is designed to multiply in and subsequently destroy cancer cells, while at the same time making the patients' own immune defence system attack cancer cells also," said Kirn from California-based biotherapy company Jennerex.

65.4 Million Gun Purchases Since Obama Took Office, 91% More Than Bush's First-Term Total

Via Billy

There have been 65,376,373 background checks completed for Americans purchasing firearms since February of 2009, the first full month of Barack Obama's presidency.

According to data compiled by the FBI, the number of Americans purchasing guns has skyrocketed since Obama was elected.

In 2009, there were 13,984,953 background checks for Americans buying firearms.  If we subtract the 1,212,860 checks completed in the month of January, the total checks for the year under Obama were 12,772,090.'

For 2010, background checks totaled 14,320,489.  In 2011, checks were 16,336,732, and in 2012, 19,463,832.  Background checks for the month of January 2013 were 2,483,230.

A bunch of hicks with deer rifles could never take on the government

Via hefferman1

The Forage War, 1777, via Project White Horse.

History is a fascinating subject not because of dates and events but because of the personalities and causes that drive them.

At the moment, I’m almost halfway through Fischer’s Washington’s Crossing, at a point after the Continental Army had won battles at Trenton and Princeton through brilliant leadership, and then went into winter quarters, as Washington was busy with the business of politicking, provisioning, and recruiting for the upcoming campaign season. What my history books in high school never taught was the petite guerre that was waged on Washington’s behalf in late winter on his behalf by Jersey militiamen.

Yes, those damned, troublesome militiamen.

Through small unit attacks, raids, assaults on British foraging parties and small battles, the militia beat the Hessians and the British Regulars back to Amboy, within sight of New York City.  This petite guerre made it extremely difficult for the British to forage for food or obtain fodder for their animals without suffering continual casualties.

When British foraging units sallied forth, they were ambushed, their purloined supplies confiscated by the militias or destroyed. When larger units were sent out, the Jersey militiamen riddled their flanks and rear. In each and ever encounter, the militias gained experience and proficiency, and British and Hessians uniformly took took the heavier losses.

Parental Rights: What's In a Name?

You already know who in the government loves your child more than you do: no one.

And you know which judge in our country would be more diligent than you are to make the very best decision for your child: there isn’t one.

That is exactly why you support the Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and why you oppose the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). By establishing the “best interest of the child” legal standard, the CRC would place government officials and judges in the role of second-guessing the decisions you make for your child.

And that’s just not going to work.

Consider “Girl” Bjarkardottir of Iceland, whose story was recently featured at NBCNews.com.

Her parents didn’t name her “Girl.” They named her “Blaer.” Unfortunately, no one involved at the time realized the name was not on the government-approved list of girls' names. When the error was discovered, she had to forego her own name and use the Icelandic word for “girl” instead.

“Blaer” is Icelandic for “breeze,” and according to the Icelandic Naming Committee, it is a perfectly acceptable name – but only for a male.

Under the CRC, Iceland has an obligation “to ensure the child such protection and care as is necessary for his or her well-being…and, to this end, shall take all appropriate legislative and administrative measures…. In all actions … the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration.” (CRC, Article 3) Apparently, the Icelandic government believes its Naming Committee is a part of fulfilling this responsibility.

And the Naming Committee believes girls need to be protected from bearing the name “Blaer.”

Bruce Willis channels his ‘Die Hard’ character to blast French Socialists’ ‘millionaires tax’

Maybe Bruce Willis is the man to unite divided Republicans.

As rising GOP stars Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Rand Paul prepare to deliver competing, stereophonic versions of the fissile party’s response to President Obama’s State of the Union message Tuesday night, Mr. Willis continues to speak out in mono, on message, in a language common to all Republicans.

In France on Monday to be honored with that nation’s Commander of the Arts award, the wisecracking star of the Die Hard films took a very public swing at Socialist President Francois Hollande’s controversial 75 percent “millionaire’s tax.”

Kerry Took More Security on Trip to Arlington, Va., Than State Dept. Posted in Benghazi

 John Kerry, BDS, Benghazi

Secretary of State John Kerry took a larger detail of security agents on a trip to Arlington, Va., last week, when he went to visit—of all places—the headquarters of the department’s security bureau, than the State Department deployed to its compound in Benghazi, Libya, in the days leading up to the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks.

Kerry, as recorded by an official State Department publicity photograph, was "surrounded" in Arlington on Monday, Feb. 4, by at least four of the department’s Diplomatic Security (DS) agents. In the days leading up to the Benghazi attacks, the State Department deployed only three Dipomatic Security agents to the department's mission in Benghazi.
