NC: UDC, Town of Fayetteville memorialize Confederate soldiers

Via SHNV

The rededication of the grave markers of Confederate soldiers who died in the Battle of Fayetteville was a respectful and moving ceremony, attended by several people from southern West Virginia at Vandalia Cemetery in Fayetteville on June 15.

Earldine Robinson, president of Southern Cross Chapter 2001 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), welcomed attendees, and introduced Nancy McKown, councilwoman, who represented the Town of Fayetteville. McKown’s remarks included the history of the Vandalia Cemetery and detailed the removal of the markers from their previous, inaccessible, location above the Fayetteville Town Center shopping area to their current place of honor in the cemetery. Town council paid for the relocation and commissioned an appropriate marker. Town employees were responsible for making the site centrally located and attractive in Vandalia Cemetery.

Palestinian jihadist group claims credit for Arizona wildfire

A Palestinian jihadist group, Masada al Mujahideen, recently claimed credit for ongoing wildfires in Arizona in a statement posted to jihadist forums today. The statement, titled "Masada al-Mujahideen Fulfilled its Promise and Attacked America Again After the Expiration of the Period with Fires that Achieved Historic Results," was obtained and translated by the SITE Intelligence Group.

"We had previously announced an unconventional war against the occupation state of Israel, and then we escalated this war to reach its main supporter, America, so that it receives a major share of it, which will destroy their flora and fauna, with permission from Allah and then with our hands," the group said.

The statement further said that the group targeted the United States "in order to make it clear and to make it know we can reach it when we warn it, and to make it certain that our hands don't just reach it but also strike it."

The group warned that the attacks "will not be the last...if America does not respond to our demands." The statement boasted that 19 firefighters had been killed in the fires.

Contrary to the claims of Masada al Mujahideen, authorities have said that they believe the fires were started as a result of lighting.

Today's statement was not the first highly dubious claim by the jihadist group related to fires in the US. In January 2012, the group claimed credit for wildfires in Nevada.

According to SITE, in addition to claiming responsibility for fires in the US, the jihadist group has claimed credit for more than a dozen fires in Israel since 2010.

NC: Stop Sheriff Gun Permit Abuses

While applicants wait up to 45 days just to submit applications, sheriffs want more money from you!

According to documents released by the NC Department of Justice, over the last three months Mecklenburg County has approved just 573 Concealed Handgun Permits. While statewide, concealed handgun permits have increased a staggering 9.36% in just the last three months, Mecklenburg County's increase of just 573 is only a 2.83% increase!

How does Sheriff Daniel "Chipp" Bailey do this? He demands that all concealed handgun permit applicants to schedule an appointment with him 30-45 days in advance. There is no legal justification for this process, and we can see the results in black and white. In similarly sized Wake County, which does not require citizens to schedule an interview, CHPs have increased by 2,626 permits (10.74%). By comparison, Mecklenburg County's abysmal 573 (2.83%) is nothing short of outrageous. Mecklenburg County is bigger, yet Wake County issued more than 4-1/2 times as many new CHPs in the same time period!

Meanwhile, we are seeing an increasing number of rogue sheriffs who ignore what was designed to be a uniform "shall issue" permit law by imposing extra requirements on applicants. Given recent attacks on your rights by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association, GRNC will now begin delivering "heat" to rogue sheriffs, starting with Sheriff "Chipp" Bailey.

Stop SB 368 to double purchase permit fees

Meanwhile, Senate Bill 368 ("County/ Sheriff Fee Changes") is quietly moving through the legislature and now sits in the House Rules Committee. SB 368, if you’ll remember, doubles the fees for pistol purchase permits! As the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association loudly protests the repeal of the Jim Crow era purchase permit law, you can begin to understand why. On top of retaining control over which citizens can purchase a handgun in North Carolina, sheriffs around the state will soon begin to collect double the fees for each permit they issue.

GRNC opposes SB 368 and its attempt to extort even more money from North Carolina gun owners. Having worked hard to repeal the state’s purchase permit law through HB 937, we will fight to oppose SB 368 in the same manner. It’s important that you also help us and contact the House Rules Committee now to voice your displeasure over SB 368.

WSJ: We're Sorry We Were Too Soft on Obamacare

 http://mychal-massie.com/premium/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Supreme-Court-Fails-on-Obamacare.png

The Wall Street Journal, a leading and persistent critic of Obamacare, apologized to its readers Thursday for being too soft over the law.

"These columns fought the Affordable Care Act from start to passage, and we'd now like to apologize to our readers. It turns out we weren't nearly critical enough," the paper said in an editorial on its website.

"The law's implementation is turning into a fiasco for the ages, and this week's version is the lawless White House decision to delay the law's insurance mandate for businesses, though not for individuals."

That decision, announced Tuesday evening,  is the latest in a series of blunders by the Obama administration, the paper said.

The change was revealed in a blog post by Mark Mazur, a deputy assistant Treasury secretary, and came just as Washington "began to evacuate for the long Independence Day weekend."

White House Spokeswoman Valerie Jarrett tried to handle the fallout from the surprise announcement with a blog post of her own, saying Obamacare is still on track.

"That's true only if she's referring to the carelessness and improvisation that have defined the law so far," the Journal said.

Homeland Security Conducts “Top Secret” July 4 Drill

Via Steven

The Department of Homeland Security is conducting a “top secret” drill codenamed ‘Operation Independence’ across the United States today, during which officers in riot gear as well as undercover agents will patrol transport hubs.

According to a report by KTTV, the exercise is a “full scale terrorism drill”  taking place nationwide. In Los Angeles, the drill involves the LA County Sheriff’s Department, Homeland Security and TSA agents, as well as plain clothed officers who will be, “working undercover, looking like any other passenger, they scour faces, briefcases and backpacks, looking for anything out of the ordinary.”

Officials claim the drills are to make the public feel “safe” in light of claims that the alleged Boston Bombers had planned a July 4 terror attack in New York.

According to Nicole Nishida of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Americans will celebrate their “independence” from tyranny by submitting to random bag searches.

Although the drill is “high visibility” in one sense – cops dressed in riot gear will be involved – many details of the exercise remain “top secret and that’s the way it should be. Only they need to know what the game plan is,” reports KTTV.

Instead of asking hard questions about what precisely taxpayer dollars were being spent on, the news channel prostituted itself to become a mouthpiece for the authorities, justifying the drill by hyping the threat of terrorism - when in reality academic studies show that Americans are more likely to be killed by accident-causing deer, severe allergic reactions to peanuts, or bee stings than they are by terrorists.

Review: The Day Dixie Died

Dixie

Thomas and Debra Goodrich’s book The Day Dixie Died: Southern Occupation, 1865-1866 is one of a small handful of books that dares to tell the truth about what really happened in the American South in 1865.

BRA’s historians prefer to focus exclusively on black suffering, noble Yankees, the preservation of the Glorious Union, Lincoln’s assassination, the abolition of slavery, and the wickedness of Southern opposition to Reconstruction.

The Southern reader is always left with the gut feeling that something is being deliberately omitted from their narrative. Court historians are not telling the whole story. There is a sneaking suspicion that history is being written from the perspective of the victors.

What about the losers? If the Union won the War Between the States, then the Confederates were the losers. In The Day Dixie Died, Thomas and Debra Goodrich describe in vivid detail what life was like for the losing side in the year that followed Appomattox.

Here are some highlights:

Secret NSA Deals Cast Doubt on All US Stocks

 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/prism-collection-documents/images/prism-slide-5.jpg

Whatever you think about Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency (NSA) data collection he unveiled is more than a privacy issue. Investors should pay attention, too. The company whose shares you own may be lying to you — while Uncle Sam looks the other way.

Let's step through this. I think you will see the problem.

Fact 1: U.S. financial markets are the envy of the world because we have fair disclosure requirements, accounting standards and impartial courts. This is the foundation of shareholder value. The company may lose money, but they at least told you the truth.

Fact 2: We now know multiple public companies, including Microsoft (MSFT), Google (GOOG), Facebook (FB) and other, gave their user information to NSA. Forget the privacy implications for a minute. Assume for the sake of argument that everything complies with U.S. law. Even if true, the businesses may still be at risk.

Fact 3: All these companies operate globally. They get revenue from China, Japan, Russia, Germany, France and everywhere else. Did those governments consent to have their citizens monitored by the NSA? I think we can safely say no.

Politicians in Europe are especially outraged. Citizens are angry with the United States and losing faith in American brand names. Foreign companies are already using their non-American status as a competitive advantage. Some plan to redesign networks specifically to bypass U.S. companies.

By yielding to the NSA, U.S. companies likely broke laws elsewhere. They could face penalties and lose significant revenue. Right or wrong, their decisions could well have damaged the business.

Securities lawyers call this "materially adverse information" and companies are required to disclose it. But they are not. Only chief executives and a handful of technical people know when companies cooperate with the NSA. If the CEO can't even tell his own board members he has placed the company at risk, you can bet it won't be in the annual report.

4th of July in Occupied Richmond, 1865

The Northern armies that laid siege to this American city for three years had created a smoking nightmare of tottering walls and piles of rubble, burned bridges, gutted factories, and living hell for its remaining inhabitants. Throngs of postwar Northern visitors travelled to see the “rebel citadel” and carry home a souvenir of their war triumph.

4th of July in Occupied Richmond, 1865

"The 4th of July may be said to have been celebrated in Richmond this year. Cannon were fired at morning, noon and night. A few Chinese crackers were fired off by vagabond boys, white and black, at the corners of the streets in the early morning and in the evening, their pyrotechnic resources, I take it, being too scanty not to make it advisable to husband them to closely. In the morning, a flag was hoisted on the Spottswood Hotel, and a short speech made from the roof of the building by ([occupation forces commander] General Osgood.

Somewhat later in the day a small crowd, made up mainly of Negroes and Union soldiers, with a sprinkling of citizens and children, congregated in the Capitol Square. A lady was introduced to the assembly and read the Declaration of Independence, but in so low a tone and amid such noise of talking and walking about as made it quite impossible for anyone to hear her. The conclusion of her reading was marked by music from a military band which was in attendance. Speeches were then made by a surgeon and two chaplains, and after a benediction the company dispersed.

No applause was elicited by any of the speakers. The soldiers evidently were in the character of onlookers; the Negroes were doubtful if they were expected to applaud or would be allowed to do so [they were carefully removed by the soldiers detailed as police from the crowded steps near the speakers' stand]; and as for the citizens -- to ask any men, Unionist or secessionist, to hear such speeches and applaud them would be asking too much. All places of business were closed throughout the day, but the city wore no holiday aspect.
That part of the rebel population which appeared in the streets were seemingly indifferent spectators of what went on around them. The boys and the Negroes, and the Union soldiers in a graver way, alone seemed to enjoy the occasion."

Thomas Jefferson: “We Failed”

Via NC Links

 Thomas Jefferson failed

Dated.

Thomas Jefferson – one of my long-time heroes – was convinced that he and his friends blew the chance they had to establish true freedom in America. I know that a hundred thousand self-praising textbooks, speeches, pundits and songs claim that Jefferson and the rest established freedom, but that’s NOT what Jefferson thought, and that is NOT what he said. (You can choose who to believe for yourself.)

Nearly fifty years after the declaration of independence, he was of the opinion that the founders did not fully live up to the moment presented to them.

Here is a letter that Jefferson wrote to John Cartwright on June 5th, 1824. Jefferson’s words are in plain text and my modern paraphrasing of the lines are in italics:

Our Revolution presented us an album on which we were free to write what we pleased. Yet we did not avail ourselves of all the advantages of our position.

NC: Representative Walter Jones threatens to impeach Obama amidst Syrian civil war (Old)

Via NC Links

Don't know how I missed this statement by my congressman from last week.

Rep. Walter B. Jones (R-N.C. 3rd District) is threatening to impeach President Obama if he allows military aid for rebels in the Syrian civil war.
Jones, along with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, are pushing a resolution that would prevent President Obama from arming the Syrian rebels without congressional approval.

"If Congress sends one troop- if one of our troops goes to Syria and is killed, I will introduce articles of impeachment against the president," Rep. Jones said at a Capitol Hill News conference on Thursday.

More Americans View Blacks As Racist Than Whites, Hispanics

http://www.fuckfrance.com/images/i400/268136.979black_racism_white_v_orig.jpg

Americans consider blacks more likely to be racist than whites and Hispanics in this country.

Thirty-seven percent (37%) of American Adults think most black Americans are racist, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Just 15% consider most white Americans racist, while 18% say the same of most Hispanic Americans. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

There is a huge ideological difference on this topic. Among conservative Americans, 49% consider most blacks racist, and only 12% see most whites that way. Among liberal voters, 27% see most white Americans as racist, and 21% say the same about black Americans.

From a partisan perspective, 49% of Republicans see most black Americans as racist, along with 36% of unaffiliated adults and 29% of Democrats.

Among black Americans, 31% think most blacks are racist, while 24% consider most whites racist and 15% view most Hispanics that way.

Among white adults, 10% think most white Americans are racist; 38% believe most blacks are racist, and 17% say most Hispanics are racist.

Overall, just 30% of all Americans now rate race relations in the United States as good or excellent. Fourteen percent (14%) describe them as poor. Twenty-nine percent (29%) think race relations are getting better, while 32% believe they are getting worse. Thirty-five percent (35%) feel they are staying about the same.

These figures reflect more pessimism than was found in April when 42% gave race relations positive marks and 39% said race relations were improving.  However, the April number reflected all-time highs while the current numbers are more consistent with the general attitudes of recent years.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook

The survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on July 1-2, 2013 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

With Americans in the South disarmed and impoverished by war, the Radical Republican Congress proceeded to treat them “as alien communities who were to be dealt with anew under the laws of conquest and admitted to the Union on conditions of its own imposing.”  To assure their political hegemony in the South, the Radicals deemed it not desirable to have the Union restored by the admission of eleven Democratic States as that would seriously endanger the Republican party.

The 4th of July 1868

“North Carolina, who had already, in obedience to the President’s invitation, held a convention and remodeled her government . . . [and] became part of “Military District No. 2.” Orders from “Headquarters” in Charleston, South Carolina, dissolved her State government . . . overturned her laws and displaced her officials. Anarchy reigned . . . a new convention was called.
The Negroes were invited to vote, though their suffrage was not known to either State or Federal law; whilst many thousands, embracing nearly all of her leading citizens, were disenfranchised. The excuse for this legislation was that the States lately in insurrection were in a state of complete anarchy, entirely without civil law and a republican form of government. Each assertion was a lie.

A saturnalia began. Our English-speaking race has not known its like since the plunder of Ireland in the sixteenth century. Detachments of the army were stationed at various points to overawe the people. Almost every citizen of experience of affairs in the State was disenfranchised, and over the others hung the threat of confiscation. Under such circumstances the new convention was called by military orders; the qualification of its members, its electors, and the persons to hold the elections, the time and place, were all prescribed by the same authority…”

The returns . . . were examined in secret and the result announced. That result was 110 Republicans and 10 Democrats! The voting population of the State…was 214,222; the registration for that election in 1868 was 103,060 whites and 71,657 Negroes -- total 174,717. The result shows that about 40,000 were either disenfranchised or in some other way deterred from voting.

Of the 110 Republican . . . elected . . . were thirteen Negroes and eight strangers, who came to be wittingly called “carpet-baggers.” They were not citizens of the State and were in no way entitled to the privilege of making laws for North Carolina; but they came to officer the Negroes and to teach loyalty to the whites. The rest were disaffected white natives, mostly without property to be taxed or sympathy with their race, or regard for the misfortunes of their country . . . They met in January, 1868, and framed a Constitution after those of Ohio, Illinois and other Northern States . . . On the 4th of July, 1868, the new government was inaugurated.”
