CIVIL WAR OP-ED: A Southern Black History Month Tribute

“If you can cut the people off from their history, then they can be easily persuaded.”
-- Karl Marx

February is Black History Month and America will not forget her past!

This Black History Month tribute is dedicated in memory of Atlanta, Georgia native and friend Eddie Brown Page, 111. Eddie was a Black Historian who loved American history “not political correctness” and knew the true stories about the men and women who bravely carried the United States and Confederate flags into battle.

The stories about Billy Yank and Johnny Reb of color should be shared during Black History Month by teachers, students, parents, historians and all who love the true history. Please read the Sons of Confederate Veterans information sheet about Black Confederates at: http://www.scv.org/documents/edpapers/blackhistory.pdf

Black Americans today like Mr. H.K. Edgerton from North Carolina, Mr. Nelson Winbush from Florida and Professor Edward Smith from Washington, D.C. teach the true history of the South and the USA. Mr. Winbush’s Maternal Confederate Grandfather Louis Napoleon Nelson fought with General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Winbush and Edgerton are both members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Mr. Edgerton is also past president of a North Carolina Chapter of the NAACP. Read more about Mr. Edgerton at: http://www.southernheritage411.com/

U.S. admiral assures Philippines of help in the event of conflict with China

The United States will come to the aid of the Philippines in the event of conflict with China over disputed waters in the South China Sea, the commander of the U.S. Navy said on Thursday.

The comments by Admiral Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations of the U.S. Navy, were the most explicit statement of U.S. support for the ill-equipped Philippine military which is facing a more assertive China in disputed waters.

"Of course, we would help you," Greenert told students of the National Defense College of the Philippines in response to a question about a hypothetical Chinese occupation of one of the disputed Spratly Islands.

"I don't know what that help would be specifically. I mean, we have an obligation because we have a treaty. But, I don't know in what capacity that help is."

Reflecting on Total War

 https://gs1.wac.edgecastcdn.net/8019B6/data.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc7voqy2kb1rd3evlo1_1280.jpg

There was a time when certain groups, like women, children and the aged were spared the sufferings of war, and when armies fought each other on the field of battle to decide an issue.  This chivalric discrimination came to an end in the modern warfare practiced by Lincoln, Sherman and Sheridan.
Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman
North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission

"The Official Website of the North Carolina WBTS Sesquicentennial"

Reflecting on Total War

“The French Revolution marks the period when the impulse to end discrimination  and to integrate everything first began to make itself definitely felt.  From the beginning of the age of chivalry until this date the Western world had generally recognized a code of war.

The Napoleonic Wars following the French Revolution [brought] in the “democratic” conscript army but they preserved the distinction between combatant and noncombatant.  Civilians retained their freedom of movement.  The armies marched along paths prescribed for them, fought for victory rather than for annihilation, and expected society to go on with its function.  When the eighteen-year upheaval was over, the central figure in it, though overthrown, was neither hanged or shot.

He was transported to an island where he could live out his years in comfort,  if not in happiness.  When he escaped and repeated his offense, he was transported to a more remote island.  There was never any thought of trying to “prove” something by killing him.  A distinction was preserved between an enemy on the field of battle and an enemy captured.

During the Crimean War (1854-56) Russia continued to pay interest on its debt to its enemy Britain.  War was one thing; the honoring of financial obligations another.

The American Civil War, coming a decade later, marked a decisive turn in the direction of total war.  The Federal commander George B. McClellan and the Confederate General Robert E. Lee belonged to the old school.  Both conducted the type of war which is designed to overthrow the opposing army and decide the issue on the field of battle. It was not part of their policy to turn the war against civilians and non-military objectives.

[Lincoln and the Radical leaders of the Northern Congress] removed [McClellan] from command after the battle of [Sharpsburg]. The character of the war thereafter was changed drastically, and in the last two years the Federal Generals [Sherman and Sheridan] carried on a systematic warfare of destruction in Virginia and the Carolinas with the object of involving the entire population.
The statement of the former that he would “bring every Southern woman to the washtub” and the latter that he had devastated the Shenandoah Valley . . . sounded the end to the age of chivalry.  For his part in this General Sherman has been termed by an admiring biographer a “fighting prophet,” who saw beyond the old concept of war to a new order, in which no one and nothing would be spared.

[The] advance toward totalism in [the First World War] certainly appears in the sweeping nature of the conscription practiced by all belligerents and in the way in which every phase of life  -- economic, financial, social, and cultural – was drawn into the struggle and made ancillary to the war. To an unprecedented degree the idea was promoted that the nation should become as one , with no thought but to kill and destroy.

The Second World War went immeasurably further and reduced the word “noncombatant” almost to meaningless.  Distinctions of sex and age and vocation vanished away.  Neither status nor location offered any immunity from destruction, and that often of a horrible kind.  Mass killing did indeed rob the cradle and the grave.

Our nation was treated to the spectacle of young boys fresh out of Kansas and Texas turning nonmilitary Dresden into a holocaust which is said to have taken tens of thousands of lives, pulverizing ancient shrines like monte Casino and Nuremburg, and bringing atomic annihilation to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

These are items of the evidence that the war of unlimited objectives has swallowed up all discrimination, comparison, humanity, and, we would have to add, enlightened self-interest.  We are compelled to recall Winston Churchill, a descendant of the Duke of Marlborough and in many ways a fit spokesman for Britain’s nobility, saying that no extreme of violence would be considered too great for victory.

Then there is the equally dismaying spectacle of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the reputedly great liberal and humanitarian, smiling blandly and waving the cigarette holder while his agents showered unimaginable destruction upon European and Japanese civilians.

The object of this reflection, however, is not to place blame for any particular atrocity, but to ask whether civilization n has given itself a mortal hurt in going so far beyond bounds that were previously respected.  It is said that some kinds of animals become infected with a type of madness which leads finally to their extinction as a species.  Is this the kind of epitaph that will have to be written for modern man if there is anyone left to write epitaphs?

United States falls to 46th in world press freedom rankings

The United States, due to an "overly broad and abusive interpretation of national security needs," fell below El Salvador and Romania in a world press freedom ranking released Wednesday.

The US fell 13 positions to 46th place in this year’s World Press Freedom Index, produced since 2002 by the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders. The organization said the main reason the US dropped so far in the rankings was because of its dogged efforts to "track down whistleblowers and the sources of leaks."

Ninth Circuit strikes California’s restrictive rule against licensed carry of handguns

Via The Vulgar Curmudgeon

http://www.texasemployerhandbook.com/files/2011/10/pulling-gun-from-purse.jpg

The Ninth Circuit’s decision in Peruta v. San Diego, released minutes ago, affirms the right of law-abiding citizens to carry handguns for lawful protection in public.

California law has a process for applying for a permit to carry a handgun for protection in public, with requirements for safety training, a background check, and so on. These requirements were not challenged. The statute also requires that the applicant have “good cause,” which was interpreted by San Diego County to mean that the applicant is faced with current specific threats. (Not all California counties have this narrow interpretation.) The Ninth Circuit, in a 2-1 opinion written by Judge O’Scannlain, ruled that Peruta was entitled to Summary Judgement, because the “good cause” provision violates the Second Amendment.

The Court ruled that a government may specify what mode of carrying to allow (open or concealed), but a government may not make it impossible for the vast majority of Californians to exercise their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Homeland Security to Activate ‘National License Plate Recognition Database’

UK version of spy system was used to target political activists

The Department of Homeland Security is set to activate a national license plate tracking system that will be shared with law enforcement, allowing DHS officers to take photos of any license plate using their smartphone and upload it to a database which will include a “hot list” of “target vehicles”.

The details are included in a PDF attachment uploaded yesterday to the Federal Business Opportunities website under a solicitation entitled “National License Plate Recognition Database.”

The system will “track vehicle license plate numbers that pass through cameras or are voluntarily entered into the system from a variety of sources (access control systems, asset recovery specialists, etc.) and uploaded to share with law enforcement” in order to help locate “criminal aliens and absconders.”

The Regime Celebrates its Birthday

Via Michael

As Clyde Wilson once pointed out, the symbol of America started out as “George Washington on his white horse” but is now “a corporate lawyer/lobbyist in an armchair.”  The latter refers to the Lincoln Memorial, which is not so much the symbol of “America” but of the governmental regime in Washington, D.C.  That is why Lincoln must be idolized, worshipped, and compared to Jesus Christ (“He died on Good Friday and died for America’s sins just as Christ died for the world’s sins” his idolaters and cultists have been saying for generations), and referred to as “Father Abraham.”

Lincoln did not create “a new birth of freedom” but a new birth of mercantilism, crony capitalism, and centralized government monopoly of the sort the American colonists had fought a revolution against.  A real statesman would have followed the British example (and the French, Danes, Dutch, Spanish, and Swedish), and the example of all the Northern states in the U.S., and found a way to end slavery peacefully through some kind of compensated emancipation (See Jim Powell, Greatest Emancipations: How the West Ended Slavery).  Instead, the ending of slavery eventually became associated with a war that, according to the most recent research, resulted in as many as 850,000 deaths (the old death count was 620,000).

Fire Your Mayor! Shut Down Bloomberg’s Anti-Gun MAIG

It is time to dismantle “Mayors Against Illegal Guns,” or MAIG. The organization started as a great idea. Who doesn’t want to fight the transfer of illegal guns? The problem is, this organization was corrupt from the start. Started by **former** mayors Micheal Bloomberg and Boston’s Thomas Menino, it has now come out that the intent of of the group was always to confiscate all firearms from legal and law abiding gun owners. This week marked the departure from the group of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Mayor John C. Tkazyik. He claims to be an NRA member and that he has always supported lawful firearms ownership. Apparently he was lured into MAIG with false promises of support for programs that get actual results in fighting local crime and homicides, then eventually figured out that MAIG was just a bunch of gun grabbers with an Orwelian reverse-think name.

 Obama WH state dinner

Love it! :)

One Illinois Republican lawmaker has asked the White House and the Obama’s to stop being “hypocrites” and practice what they preach about nutrition.

Tuesday night’s glutton-fest of a White House state dinner for French President François Hollande was the perfect example of why U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis has introduced legislation that would require official White House meals to follow the same USDA mandated guidelines for school lunch and breakfast programs.

Communists to Obama: We've got your back

Party chief says Americans more willing now to accept socialism communism.

With Democrats facing a real possibility of losing the Senate this November, the Communist Party USA has announced the cavalry is planning to ride to their rescue by helping unite the left and stave off “right-wing extremism.”

The plans were announced during a web streaming event held by party Chairman Sam Webb Wednesday titled “Taking care of the future: from here to socialism.”

The event was part of the party’s national convention process which will culminate later this year in Chicago, where the party was formed in 1919.

Webb told listeners that there is no direct path to socialism and that to arrive at their destination they would have to pass through different stages. He stated one of those steps was to work with other left-wing groups to press for issues important to the left.

UN to Vatican: Your Theology Violates Child Rights

By now the Committee on the Rights of the Child (“Committee”), which is charged with overseeing the implementation of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), has made so many exaggerated claims of authority that they can’t even shock us anymore. Well, until they do.

Last month the Committee issued its review of CRC implementation by the Holy See, the political entity of the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church. While the extreme leftist agenda of the Committee has never been much of a secret, it is on display at its most egregious in this “Concluding Observations” report.

The key issues of “concern” for the Committee were as one might expect: abortion, teen sexuality, homosexuality (and homosexual marriage), corporal punishment (spanking), and parental rights. According to Catholic Church doctrine, abortion is the murder of an unborn child; sex is intended only within the confines of marriage; homosexual activity or lifestyle is a sin; a moderate spanking is – or can be - a part of godly discipline; and parents have the ultimate God-given responsibility for their children.

But the Committee disagrees on all points. What’s more, they communicated the expectation that the Catholic Church must change its stance on all of these topics to comply with the Convention. In so doing, the Committee placed its own opinion above the Scriptures, traditions, and religious convictions of the Catholic Church.

 Re-post

Editors note: This selection is from chapter 7 of Laurence Vance’s War, Empire, and the Military: Essays on the Follies of War and U.S. Foreign Policy, now available in the Mises Store.

The WikiLeaks revelations have shined a light on the dark nature of U.S. foreign policy, including, as Eric Margolis recently described it: “Washington’s heavy-handed treatment of friends and foes alike, its bullying, use of diplomats as junior-grade spies, narrow-minded views, and snide remarks about world leaders.”

As much as I, an American, hate to say it, U.S. foreign policy is actually much worse. It is aggressive, reckless, belligerent, and meddling. It sanctions the destabilization and overthrow of governments, the assassination of leaders, the destruction of industry and infrastructure, the backing of military coups, death squads, and drug traffickers, and imperialism under the guise of humanitarianism. It supports corrupt and tyrannical governments and brutal sanctions and embargoes.
It results in discord, strife, hatred, and terrorism toward the United States.

The question, then, is simply this: Can U.S. foreign policy be fixed? Although I am not very optimistic that it will be, I am more than confident that it can be.

Justin Bieber Gets Smacked At Hollywood Starbucks

blake-griffin-justin-bieber-starbucks

Justin Bieber simply can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble.

Police were dispatched this morning to respond to an altercation at a Starbucks in West Hollywood involving some familiar faces.

A barista at the coffee house was apparently confronted by Bieber  when he refused to serve the pop star because he wasn’t wearing a shirt.

“He came in with no shirt on and his pants hanging down and underwear showing and tried to order a caramel apple machiatto.”, said Joey Goldsmith, the Starbucks barista, “I just told him he would have to put a shirt on if he wanted to order.”

Map Shows Dozens of U.S. Military Ships Stationed In North Africa Waters During Benghazi Attack

Government watchdog Judicial Watch has released an unclassified map showing the military fleet positions the night of the 9/11 Benghazi terror attack. The map shows dozens of military ships, including two aircraft carriers and 13 destroyers, were stationed in the North Africa Area of Responsibility when radical Islamic militants stormed the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, killing four Americans including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens. Diplomatic.

Security agent David Ubben, a survivor of the attack, waited severely wounded on a roof with Navy SEALS Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty for 20 hours before help arrived. Woods and Doherty were killed during the waiting period.
