Gentleman Bob and the Decline of the South

 audubon quail

Coal miners have their canaries; we have colinus virginiánus, the bobwhite quail. Like the canary that goes silent as the oxygen levels in a mine drop, so too has the quail gone silent in large swaths of the South.

The decline of Gentleman Bob has been attributed to any number of factors. Wildlife biologists blame the loss and destruction of favorable habitat. Some point to diseases and parasites as the true ravagers of the quail. Myself, I lay the blame at a number of doors. The small farms with their hedgerows and weedy edges, where people, crops, and quail thrived have gone missing. As these habitats began to disappear, wildlife agencies began a curious love affair with such varmints as hawks, coyotes and wolves.

The decline of trapping among the younger generation after the 1960s may have been celebrated heartily in many a fox den, PETA den, and raccoon nest, but not so much by Gentleman Bob who now had more worries to add to his list. Loss of habitat, the ever expanding suburban savannah and its 1” putting green lawns, and game laws that favored predators over prey have left Gentlemen Bob in a bad way.

Lincoln, The Objectivist, and Tom DiLorenzo

In a 2014 summer edition of The Objective Standard that I recently ran across, an article entitled, “Getting Lincoln Right,” caught my eye.  Alexander V. Marriott, a professor of history, takes to task those inhabitants of “the depths” of a “neo-Confederate intellectual backwater”—like economist and staunch Lincoln critic, Thomas DiLorenzo—that engage in, not just “Lincoln revisionism,” but “severe” Lincoln revisionism.

Marriot identifies four charges against Lincoln that he is certain deserve to be “put to rest.” But because the chief among them is the allegation that our 16th president “eviscerated the right of secession supposedly at the heart of the American Revolution,” it is to this claim alone that I will speak.

Before proceeding, let the reader note that I am not a historian.  Philosophy is my trade.  Yet given the unmistakably, if not always overtly, polemical character of much of the contemporary literature on Lincoln—like Marriot’s essay—it’s painfully clear that however it’s packaged, genuinely historical considerations are noted for their conspicuous absence.

Field of Lost Shoes: It Could Have Been Worse, Probably

Review of the new film Field of Lost Shoes:

I have written before here and here about the treatment of the South in film. A new entry into that dubious field is the recent “Field of Lost Shoes.” It purports to tell the story of the Virginia Military Institute cadets who at great sacrifice participated in driving back the invading Yankee arsonists and vandals at the Battle of New Market in 1864. It does enact this bit of history, sort of, after a fashion.

*In 96 minutes, including a half hour of battle action, you will not be offended by even a faint glimpse of a (shudder!) Confederate flag. (This horrid object is apparently now banned entirely from V.M.I., even in commemorations of New Market.)

Disconcerting details emerge about driver in Bob Simon's fatal accident

A car remains on the scene of an accident in New York, Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015, that killed longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent Bob Simon. New troubling details are emerging about the livery cab driver who survived the fatal crash of journalist Bob Simon in a car accident this week.

Police have confirmed that the Lincoln Town Car transporting the longtime “60 Minutes” correspondent to a medical talk about Ebola on Wednesday night sped up before rear-ending the Mercedes-Benz in front of it and crashing into metal barricades on Manhattan’s West Side Highway.

Law enforcement officials have suggested that Simon’s driver, Abdul Reshad Fedahi, likely hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. But reports from the New York Post, the New York Daily News, and CBS New York question whether Fedahi should have been behind the wheel.

Shock Pouching Is An Effective Way To Bring Game Home

The comments aren't encouraging.

The list of options for retrieving game out of areas that are inaccessible by vehicle is pretty short. An old mountain man from Arkansas explained to me how his grandmother, back in the 1950s, taught him to carry a deer rather than drag it. She called it “shock pouching.”

This method, which involves using the lower leg portions to make “backpack straps,” allowed the man to carry bucks over 5 miles on his back. With practice you’ll be able to make the straps in less than 15 minutes, and a man of average strength will be able to carry a 145- to 185-pound animal.

An Eerie Visit to Sandy Hook – Newtown

In 2010 the population was 27K and now it's only 2K.

Sandy Hook Elementary school is where the (alleged) “Biggest School Shooting in US History” happened.

The infamous Firehouse is where the Sandy Hook “Memorial Service” was held — and Crisis Actors wandered in circles through the parking lot.

Driveway blocked by orange cones is “Dickenson Drive,” the entrance to the now-bulldozed Sandy Hook Elementary school. It runs adjacent to the Firehouse parking lot.

Brevet Colonel Robert E. Lee
from his report to the Adjutant General of
the suppression of John Brown's Raid.

James Ewell Brown Stuart, First Lieutenant, U. S. Cavalry, was enjoying six months' leave from his frontier post at Fort Riley, Kansas Territory.

Yet, the joys of coming home to Virginia had not made him forget that he was a cavalryman by profession.  On the rainy morning of 17 October 1859 he had ridden over the muddy streets of Washington to the office of the War Department, and now he sat waiting to speak with Secretary of War John B. Floyd.  Jeb Stuart had an idea for a new type strap to fasten a cavalryman's
sabre to his belt.  While the young lieutenant was rehearsing in his mind for the coming interview, the Secretary himself was face to face with the spectre of a slave insurrection.

Rapper Kills His Own Mom For $90,000 … Wait Until You See What He Did With The Money

Via LH

A West Side man arranged the murder of his mother, a well-known owner of a beauty salon in Uptown, to gain access to more than $90,000 from her bank accounts and the proceeds from two of her life insurance policies, authorities said today.

Qawmane Wilson, 24, of the 0-100 block of North Mayfield Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood, has been charged with murder and home invasion in the death of his mother, Yolanda Holmes, 45, in September of 2012, authorities said.

Charged with Wilson are Eugene Spencer, 22, of the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street, who prosecutors said killed Holmes, and Loriana Johnson, 23, of the 300 block of East 131st Place, who served as Spencer’s driver.

All three were ordered held without bail today by Judge Adam Bourgeois, Jr., who called the slaying a “heinous act.”

Study Shows Stoned Driving Safer Than Drunk Driving

.............a new pair of studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that driving with marijuana in one's system is far safer than driving while drunk. After controlling for factors such as age and gender, there was essentially no increased risk to driving with marijuana in the bloodstream compared to driving sober. Conversely, drivers whose blood alcohol content was .08 (the legal limit) were four times as likely to get into an accident.

Bill would allow concealed weapons across state lines

Gun owners would be allowed to carry concealed weapons around the country under new legislation introduced in the Senate.

The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would allow gun owners who have a concealed carry permit in their home state to bring their firearms in any other state with concealed-carry laws.

"This operates more or less like a driver’s license,” Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), the second-ranking Republican in the upper chamber, told The Hill. "So, for example, if you have a driver’s license in Texas, you can drive in New York, in Utah and other places, subject to the laws of those states."

Finally a way to stop all "gun violence" so there will never be another "gun death" again

A special commission set up by Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy after the Sandy Hook shooting may include a number of recommendations in its final report from registering all firearms, to tracking ammo, and screening owners.

The 16-member Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, established two years ago following the December 2012 Newtown incident in which 20 children and six adults were killed, will consider its final draft report Friday. The expansive 256-page document includes some 95 recommendations on mental health, the physical security of schools, and most controversially, guns.

Obama amnesty creates loophole for illegal immigrants to vote in elections

14-month-old Zoe Buck checks out an empty voting booth as at her mother, Julie Buck, votes at left on Nov. 4 at the Alaska Zoo polling place in Anchorage, Alaska. (Associated Press)

President Obama’s temporary deportation amnesty will make it easier for illegal immigrants to improperly register and vote in elections, state elections officials testified to Congress on Thursday, saying that the driver’s licenses and Social Security numbers they will be granted create a major voting loophole.

While stressing that it remains illegal for noncitizens to vote, secretaries of state from Ohio and Kansas said they won’t have the tools to sniff out illegal immigrants who register anyway, ignoring stiff penalties to fill out the registration forms that are easily available at shopping malls, motor vehicle bureaus and in curbside registration drives.

Anyone registering to vote attests that he or she is a citizen, but Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted said mass registration drives often aren’t able to give due attention to that part, and so illegal immigrants will still get through.

Of Double Standards and Triple Homicides: Media Malpractice and the North Carolina Murders

Via LH

 Image result for Tamerlan Tsarnaev

On the night of Sept. 11, 2011, three men were brutally murdered in Waltham, Massachusetts — their throats slashed and bodies covered in marijuana.

Despite the gruesome nature of the crime, which one investigator described as “the worst bloodbath” he had ever seen, the national media would have never reported on this story, let alone identified the Jewish religion of at least two of the slain, had Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a Muslim and close friend of the third victim, not carried out the Boston bombing.

In fact, in spite of Tsarnaev’s ties to the victims of these yet unsolved murders, to this day articles almost specifically de-emphasize the date of the crime, the fact that as the same investigator described it, the victims’ wounds were akin to those of “an Al-Qaeda training video,” and the religion of the slain.

Contrast this story with the horrific news that three Muslims were murdered execution style in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Unlike in the Waltham triple homicide, this story was explicitly reported as I just laid it out – a man killed three Muslims – a man, mind you, who many reports neglected to note is a militantly anti-religious atheist progressive.

Iranian, Hezbollah and Regime troops advance toward Israel

hezbollah

Iranian officers working with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization are fighting their way closer to Israel’s northern border with Syria and could soon be in control of the Syrian side of the armistice line.

A government source from Syria’s Ministry of Information confirmed to WND a report Tuesday from a U.K.-based human rights organization which stated Hezbollah and Iranian forces were leading a counterinsurgency targeting rebel strongholds in Quneitra, just on the other side of Israel’s border with Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Hezbollah-Iran axis is also leading battles against Islamist insurgents in Daraa, at the Jordan-Israel border and along the southwest of Damascus province.

Yemen: They took "30 tanks, 90 military vehicles, 25 armoured vehicles and 28 artillery pieces,"

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned Thursday that Yemen was falling apart and called for action to avert chaos, as Al-Qaeda fighters overran an army camp and seized heavy weaponry.

The UN chief was reporting to the 15-member council after talks with Gulf officials that he said concentrated on "preventing civil war in Yemen".

"Let me be clear: Yemen is collapsing before our eyes. We cannot stand by and watch," Ban told the council.
Long on the front line of the war against Al-Qaeda, Yemen has descended into chaos since Shiite militiamen, known as Huthis, seized Sanaa in September and ousted the government last week.

This Idea Beats Forced Service to Homosexual Marriage

Via Terry

 http://www.slate.com/content/dam/slate/articles/life/wedding/replaceimageceremony.jpg.CROP.original-original.jpg

RedState reader Clifweston wins the internet today with this most excellent idea.
How about a different tactic that doesn’t risk the business owner’s estate? Why not advertise that the proceeds of all same sex marriage sales go to organizations that offend gays and radical feminists, organizations that advocate for and support traditional values, etc.? Thus, Stalinists will themselves funding their opponents and the novelty of their tactics would diminish so that they leave the rest of us alone. In this way those opposed to same sex weddings can go on the offense, advertise openly for same sex wedding customers while revealing where the money goes and not running afoul of fascist office holders in league with the gay activists.
If you live in a state that forces you to provide goods or services to homosexual weddings, let it be know you will donate the proceeds to conversion therapy organizations, the Family Research Council, the Ethics in Religious Liberty Commission, the Alliance Defending Freedom, or some other Christian organization that opposes the homosexual agenda.

It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!” – Upton Sinclair, anti-fascist, anti-imperialist American author who wrote in the early 20thcentury

“No vaccine manufacturer shall be liable…for damages arising from a vaccine-related injury or death.” – President Ronald Reagan, as he signed The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (NCVIA) of 1986, absolving drug companies from all medico-legal liability when children die or are disabled from vaccine injuries.

Everybody is well aware of the fear-based, 24/7 media freak-out over the 150 cases of red measles in the US, an unreported number of which had already been fully or partially vaccinated against measles. Some of them may possibly have been exposed to a recent vaccinee who was still actively shedding the live virus from that inoculation.

No conscientious truth-telling person in a position of authority has been allowed to come forward with all the facts that we need to know before ignorant non-scientist legislators go off half-cocked and pass laws demanding that every child everywhere be forced to get every CDC-recommended shots that keep the “well-child” clinics humming (despite the fact that the “crisis” is only about measles).

Rutgers To Hold College Fair For Illegal Aliens

Rutgers University, the flagship state university of New Jersey, will be hosting what appears to be the first ever college admissions fair designed exclusively for illegal immigrants.

The event, dubbed “UndocuRutgers,” will be held this Saturday, and will feature admissions representatives from Rutgers as well as several local colleges. According to NJ.com, it will also have representatives from Rutgers School of Law-Newark, who will offer tips on how prospective students can apply for federal deferrals on deportation and other legal issues. Participants will also receive help typical for college fairs, such as advice on how to pay for school (illegal immigrants are ineligible for federal loans).

NYT Columnist Carr dead hours after Snowden interview

Media columnist David Carr, who wrote the Media Equation column for The New York Times and penned a memoir about his fight with drug addiction, collapsed at his office and died. He was 58.

Just hours before his death Thursday, he had moderated a "Times Talks" conversation with Edward Snowden, director Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald about the documentary "Citizenfour," which chronicles Snowden's leak of National Security Agency documents. Carr, engaged as always, drew them out with pointed questions and wry observations to speak candidly about the film.
