You may have heard of civil asset forfeiture.

That's where police can seize your property and cash without first proving you committed a crime; without a warrant and without arresting you, as long as they suspect that your property is somehow tied to a crime.

Now, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a device that also allows them to seize money in your bank account or on prepaid cards.

It's called an ERAD, or Electronic Recovery and Access to Data machine, and state police began using 16 of them last month.

Here's how it works. If a trooper suspects you may have money tied to some type of crime, the highway patrol can scan any cards you have and seize the money.

"We're gonna look for different factors in the way that you're acting,” Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. John Vincent said. “We're gonna look for if there's a difference in your story. If there's someway that we can prove that you're falsifying information to us about your business."

Troopers insist this isn't just about seizing cash.

  1. Some Departments are really trying their best to make it hard to respect and trust them!
    Wonder how all this ends.

  2. Having your money swiped has taken on a whole new meaning, at least in Oklahoma.

  3. So now they are nothing more than highwaymen with a government monopoly? It makes it hard to see a jury convict for shooting a badge Nazi. This is almost as bad as the group of cops and state troopers in Bardstown Ky. who spent over a year gang raping a 13 year old girl. They were not only NOT charged with any crime. They didn't even get a reprimand. The cops say they just cannot understand why there are no witnesses when one of them gets shot. Gee Wiz guys maybe being thieves and child molesting scum has something to do with that.

What was the rationale? Do you have a link?

  4. No this story was all over the local news for two years and NEVER once did it hit the national news wire. The local judge who ruled to dismiss all charges WITHOUT A HEARING "because the little whore asked for it" also ordered the LEO's and KSP officers reinstated without reprimand. Then it all went down the memory hole. You MIGHT find the whole sad story in the WLKY or WDRB archive. Or it may have been purged by now. It's not like its a free country anymore. PS. The feds charged one of the LEO's involved in this as a member of the "Mexican Mafia" when they caught him with 800Lb of pot in his basement. That never went "national" ether.

  6. Wonder how many "oath keepers" are participating in THIS theft?
Hard not to outright laugh in the face of someone claiming American soldiers and police will never confiscate your guns.
Tell a cop it's "The LAW" and he will crack your skull, IF he doesn't shoot you, and then start braying about the thin blue line.

I certainly hope they think this through thoroughly and although all wouldn't participate, enough would to light the match.

  7. Was the cop that shot-gunned on the offramp in Bardstown a couple years in on it? Maybe the principal of Shoot, Shovel, Shut up Southern justice in action.
