Nine years ago, a driver lost control of his pickup truck and crashed into the Confederate monument on the front lawn of the Franklin County Courthouse, decapitating the marble soldier. Some locals who found the monument offensive said they were glad to see it go, but there was never much doubt that once the money was raised, the soldier would be back.

The rededication ceremony in 2010 drew a crowd of about 500 people—women wore hoop skirts and men donned the gray uniforms of Confederate soldiers. “We’re very proud of it,” says Linda Stanley, managing director of the Franklin County Historical Society in Rocky Mount, Virginia, 25 miles southeast of Roanoke. “This whole county’s very, very patriotic.”

I can't believe they do not know the cause.

    1. Thanks. The pipeline coming here sprung a big leak and won't be back to normal for about a week. Prices might go up 15 cents.

  2. Alabama and your area. WOW. I remember the gas shortage,
I guess in 2008. Absolutely no gas avail. I had to drive
to Tennessee to get gas to get to work from North Carolina.
    Wouldn't wish it on anybody.

  3. Keep up the fire and combat 1984 style historical revision!

By the by, been meaning to tell ya, got myself banned from Redstate last year for challenging a pudgy-faced tech geek moderator named 'Neil Stevens' in the comments of an article.

Basically banned me by twisting my support for folks against digging up Confederate officer memorial graves into somehow supporting slavery. Called me a 'neo-confederate' to boot.

After Eric Erikson and his redstate ilk joined the 'nevertrump' crowd, I'm none too sorry about being banned.

Ps. I'm a 'reformed' yankee who was born and raised on the south side of what is now called 'Chiraq' (chicago), and a staunch believer in states' rights.

    2. My future dirt nap site is in the Mountain View Cemetery, ten miles north of the Franklin County, VA Courthouse, and under the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, my true home going on 84 years, both in NC and VA. I'm ready to go there by natural causes or domestic enemy fire.

You have reminded me of the classic quote of Major R. E. Wilson, formerly of the 1st North Carolina Battalion of Sharpshooters.

"If I ever disown, repudiate, or apologize for the cause for which Lee fought and Jackson died, let the lightnings of Heaven rend me and the scorn of all good men and true women be my portion. Sun, moon, stars, all fall on me when I cease to love the Confederacy. 'Tis the cause, not the fate of the cause, that is glorious. From "Southern By The Grace Of God", Michael Andrew Grissom, Pelican Publishing Company, Gretna 1994, a priceless gift from my younger son, Vernon Lee Smith. And I would that the jury is still out on the fate of the cause.

I think I was born a natural hillbilly Anti-Federalist, spiritually kin to Richard Henry Lee and the others, of that marvelous ilk.
