James Brown Sr., 99, of Tellico Village, one of the last real sons of a Confederate veteran, died Thursday afternoon in a Farragut nursing home, his son, James Brown, said Saturday afternoon.

James Brown Sr.'s father, James H.H. Brown, served in the 8th Georgia Infantry's Company K and fought throughout the Civil War.

Mr. Brown would've turned 100 on Valentines's Day.

Norman Shaw, founder of the Knoxville Civil War Roundtable, recalled meeting Mr. Brown.

"It is definitely a direct connection to the past when you can say this gentleman's father fought in the Civil War," he said. "We call them real sons and real daughters of Confederate veterans."

James Brown said his grandfather was 71 when his father, James Brown Sr., was born in 1912.

"My Dad and I are so lucky to be alive," James Brown recalled.

James H.H. Brown joined the Confederate army at the beginning of the Civil War and fought in 19 major battles, including Manassas, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, Campbell Station and Fort Sanders.

"He made it to the end at Appomattox with the surrender of Lee and then he walked back home," James Brown said. "He was wounded twice and, back then with the medical situation, he could've had a leg lopped off and bled to death."

There seems to be some confusion regarding what happened after the 26 January Obama-eligibility Georgia ballot hearings conducted in Deputy Chief Judge Michael Malihi’s court. Part of the reason for the confusion may be that a seeming mountain of evidence was presented in Sand to the court, along with answers given by expert witnesses as to Mr. Obama’s original and current ineligibility to hold the Office of President of the United States. The problem with his even being allowed to run for the office in the first place appears to be the incontrovertible fact that he was never vetted as to his eligibility. Those who wished to actually check Candidate Obama’s qualifications for the highest post in the USA were defamed and mocked by the media.

Currently, articles claiming that Obama’s name has, already, been disallowed from appearing as a presidential candidate on the Georgia ballot are inaccurate. What has, thus far, occurred are the following.

1. During the 26 January hearing, three attorneys (including Atty. Orly Taitz who was the primary attorney and instrumental in bringing this case to the court) brought witnesses and evidence before Judge Malihi’s court strongly suggesting Mr. Obama does not meet the Constitutional requirements to hold the Office of President of the United States of America

2. Prior to the hearing, all three attorneys met with Judge Malihi in his chambers

3. After the hearing was concluded, Judge Malihi asked all pleading attorneys to present summaries of their cases to him by 5 February

I spoke with Attorney Taitz on Saturday 28 January and she indicated that Judge Malihi has expedited his recommendation/ruling and has reset the date of attorney submissions to 1 February.

Last week, I noted that Obama turned his back not just on Arizona's Governor Jan Brewer, but also on the laws of the State of Georgia. I closed my column, "Georgia Ballot Challenge: Obama Walks on By," with the observation: "And most of the media has followed along right behind him."

At the time, I had just witnessed an historic hearing that actually discussed the eligibility of the sitting president of the United States to run for a second term. The president had been subpoenaed to appear, and instead of his attorney respectfully following protocol to have that subpoena recalled, both Obama and his attorney, Michael Jablonski, simply failed to show up at all or offer any defense whatsoever.

“We can all agree that full employment at good wages for every man and every woman who wishes to work in the United States is a goal devoutly to be wished,” Taft told the National Industrial Conference Board.

But it could not be an absolute right; that notion was impractical. The Declaration of Independence “mentions only the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Constitution, while promising to secure blessings of liberty, only proposes to promote the general welfare.” A guarantee of work would be impossible to fulfill, and was “wholly inconsistent with the very freedom which has produced and animated the machine which provides jobs at good wages.”

President Roosevelt, and the Congress of Industrial Organizations which backed this proposal, had talked of guaranteeing fifty or sixty million jobs. But, Taft inquired, “What is full employment and what is a good wage? Is there to be a guarantee of any job a man wants in any industry or is it to be such a job as the Government chooses to provide?...”

“It is clear to me that any direct guarantee of full-time jobs at good wages would involve the Government in the placement of every man and woman in the country, and ultimately the assignment by the Government of every man and woman to the job selected by the Government. This is exactly the system pursued in Russia today.”

Taft’s other arguments in this speech demonstrated that the concept of full employment could be realized only in a socialist state – and even there only at the cost of diminished production and of total direction of labor; it would be fatal to the character of the people, and contrary to the material interest of every wage-earner.”

The 11th hour declaration of Governor Perdue's intentions to not seek reelection has upended Raleigh and has potentially far reaching consequences in North Carolina politics. For the Democrats an uphill slog has been replaced by the chaotic process of finding a suitable process in 100 days before May 8. For the Republicans, this only heightens their excitement at the prospect of ending their 20 year hiatus from the Governor's mansion.

The Democrat's were rocked by Governor Perdue's decision to take a pass at a rematch with Pat McCrory just 3 weeks before the candidate filing period begins on February 15. The strongest possible alternative, Attorney General Roy Cooper, immediately took a pass on what would've been a true knockdown fight between two heavyweights. As of this writing two candidates have already declared their intentions to run: Lt. Governor Walter Dalton and Rep. Bill Faison.

Other potential candidates include Congressman Heath Shuler, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines, former Congressman Bob Etheridge, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, Congressman Mike McIntyre, state Senator Dan Blue, Senator Kay Hagan, and maybe more. Whether any of these potential candidates hop in depends in large part on whether Erskine Bowles jumps in thanks to his name recognition and ability to self-fund.

For the Republicans all of this chaos means at the least that Pat McCrory will be free to raise money and gain traction while the Democrats wage an expensive and possibly divisive primary battle. It could also mean a free ride in the general election for the Republican Congressional candidates in the 7th and 11th Districts. And it could also give the Republicans on Jones Street the potential to move moderate Democrats in their direction on issues such as Voter ID and overriding Governor Perdue's other vetoes.

The next three months will be exciting as North Carolina shifts rightward. It is time for our members to use this shifting environment to take action on the issues we care about and ensure that members of both parties take us seriously. NC LS Legislative Task Force

Face hate-crime charges? Yeah, right.........

Police said the three teens were black and the cabbie and passenger were white. Police did not immediately know whether the teens would or could face hate-crime charges.

IN A HORRIFIC assault in Center City on Saturday night, three teenagers who were spouting racial slurs pulled a man out of a cab to beat him. And when the cabdriver intervened to stop the assault, the teens turned their rage on him, police said yesterday.

About 8:25 p.m., a cab was stopped at a red light at 15th and Chestnut streets when two 17-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy approached and started calling the male passenger in the back seat racially derogatory names, police said.

The boys then threw an unknown liquid at the cab before they opened the door, pulled the passenger out and started to pummel him, police said.

When the cabbie got out of the car to see what was going on, the passenger ran away and the teens turned on the cabbie. They punched him in the face, kicked him and threw a liquid on him, police said.

Despite being outnumbered, the cabbie grabbed a tire iron from his trunk, at which time the teens ran away.

In Mississippi on February 1, 1890, an appropriation for a monument to the Confederate dead was being considered. A delegate had just spoken against the bill, when John F. Harris, a Black Republican delegate from Washington, county, rose to speak:

"Mr. Speaker! I have risen in my place to offer a few words on the bill.

I have come from a sick bed. Perhaps it was not prudent for me to come. But sir, I could not rest quietly in my room without contributing a few remarks of my own.

I was sorry to hear the speech of the young gentlemen from Marshall County. I am sorry that any son of a soldier would go on record as opposed to the erections of a monument in honor of the brave dead. And, Sir, I am convinced that had he seen what I saw at Seven Pines, and in the Seven Day's fighting around Richmond, the battlefield covered with mangled forms of those who fought for this country and their country's honor, he would not have made the speech.

When the news came that the South had been invaded, those men went forth to fight for what they believed, and they made not requests for monuments. But they died, and their virtues should be remembered.

Sir, I went with them. I, too, wore the gray, the same color my master wore. We stayed for four long years, and if that war had gone on till now I would have been there yet. I want to honor those brave men who died for their convictions.

When my Mother died I was a boy. Who, Sir, then acted the part of Mother to the orphaned slave boy, but my old Missus! Were she living now, or could speak to me from those high realms where are gathered the sainted dead, she would tell me to vote for this bill. And, Sir, I shall vote for it. I want it known to all the world that my vote is given in favor of the bill to erect a monument in HONOR OF THE CONFEDERATE DEAD."

When the applause died down, the measure passed overwhelmingly, and every Black member voted "AYE."

“It is also well known that Stalin in 1931 personally intervened in the historical debate with his letter to the editors of Proletarskaia revoliutsiia…the writing of Party history constituted a form of power. The history of the Party was too important to be left entirely in the hands of historians.

[There emerged] efforts of rival groups of Marxist historians to win a mandate from the Party Central Committee to guide historical research and publication, to control the staffing of institutions, and to enforce professional norms.

But in the field of history, a local factor was also involved: the militance of the Marxist students. Almost simultaneously with this student campaign came a political fight within the Party organization of the Institute of Red Professors. In the course of 1928, an increasingly vituperative public campaign was mounted against non-Marxist historiography. By the beginning of 1929….[attacks began] on the institutional base of non-Marxist historians.

At the First All-Union Conference of Marxist Historians…a proposal to liquidate [the] Institute of History [was made] and create in its place a new institute under the Communist Academy. [Thus came the] Society of Marxist Historians, the forum for Marxist discussion in the profession and source of many of the attacks on “bourgeois historians.”

[After Stalin criticized many historians commitment to Marxism]…The Society of Marxist Historians demanded a review of all existing historical literature, and students of the Institute of Red Professors were formed into brigades preparing assessments of large portions of the existing literature for publication in the press. [Then], extermination of cadres of historians began. Many historians were slandered, then repressed. Many were compelled to admit “errors.”

The [Russian] cultural revolution…radically changed the historical profession. From the mid-thirties, all historians had to pay lip service to Marxism, just as they did (despite the contradiction involved) to the glories of the Russian national tradition. The old factions [of traditional historians] were dissolved, or went underground.

Man threatens, follows woman during road rage incident

Sounds familiar except for the outcome.

A St. Louis security guard was arrested Thursday after police say he threatened to kill a driver on a highway exit ramp.
John Davis was on his way home from his club security job on North Kingshighway when he told me that a driver cut him off. Police say that made him so mad that he not only threatened to shoot another driver over it but that he also had the guns and ammo to do it.

Police say they pulled four loaded handguns from the off-duty security guard's car minutes after he allegedly threatened to shoot a woman in a fit of road rage. It started on Interstate 64 and escalated on an off ramp in Caseyville.

"He rolled down his window and shined a spotlight in my eyes -- an insanely bright spotlight -- so I couldn't even see his face," the victim said. "And he started screaming about that he had four guns in his car and that he was going to kill me."

The victim asked me not to use her name or show her face for fear of retaliation, but she told me that she then sped off, with the guard on her tail. She then called 911.

"At this point I'm so frightened I can't hardly move," she said.

By then, she says the guard had followed her into Belleville. She said she was too scared to go home, so she stayed on the phone with police as she drove around until they could get to her.

Who Commissioned Us to Remake the World?

U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul, Obama's man in Moscow, who just took up his post, has received a rude reception. And understandably so.

In 1992, McFaul was the representative in Russia of the National Democratic Institute, a U.S. government-funded agency whose mission is to promote democracy abroad.

The NDI has been tied to color-coded or Orange revolutions such as those that dethroned regimes in Serbia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia and Lebanon. The project miscarried in Belarus.

The NDI is one of several agencies, dating to the 1980s, that were set up to subvert communist regimes. With the end of the Cold War, however, these agencies were not decommissioned, but recommissioned to serve as something of an American Comintern.

Where the old Comintern of Lenin sought to instigate communist revolutions across the West and its empires, post-Cold War America decided to promote democratic revolutions to remake the world in the image of late 20th century America.

In 2002, McFaul wrote a book: Russia's Unfinished Revolution.

Vladimir Putin's men are not unreasonably asking if he was sent to Moscow to finish that revolution. Putin has already accused Hillary Clinton of flashing the signal for street demonstrations to begin—to protest Russia's December's elections.

Nor is it surprising the Putin's people are suspicious of McFaul, who added to his problems by meeting with anti-Putin dissidents the day after he presented his credentials.

McFaul says this is part of his "dual-track engagement" with Russian society. Before leaving for Moscow, he told NPR's Morning Edition: "We're not going to get into the business of dictating (Russia's) path (to democracy). ... We're just going to support what we like to call 'universal values'—not American values, not Western values, universal values."

But what, exactly, are these "universal values"?

And who are we to impose them on other nations? Did Divine Providence assign us this mission? Who do we Americans think we are?

Occupy Oakland protesters broke into City Hall, stole an American flag from the City Council chamber and set it on fire Saturday night, punctuating a wild day in which police deployed tear gas, arrested more than 400 marchers and dodged hurling objects.

Demonstrators spent the day trying to break into a convention center and temporarily occupying City Hall and a YMCA, all the while snaking around lines of riot-clad police periodically shooting bean bag projectiles, among other uses of nonlethal force.

Saturday marked the first major clashes between protesters and police since November and left three officers with minor injuries, as protesters threw bottles, metal pipes, rocks, spray cans and "improvised explosive devices," police said.

After last night’s Republican Presidential debate, the candidates’ respective spinmeisters made their cases to the media as to why their guy won the debate. One of Governor Mitt Romney’s spokesmen was Florida Representative Will Weatherford, and during the course of his remarks in the “Spin Room”, he shed a very dim light on the ongoing redistricting process in the Florida Legislature. Over the past several weeks, many Republicans have voiced their disappointment towards the Republican legislature after the release of the preliminary redistricting maps. Much of the ire concerns the proposed boundaries of Congressman Allen West’s 22nd Congressional District that would be redrawn to include far more registered Democrats.

West’s congressional district inexplicably sheds the most out support as compared to all other incumbent Republican and Democrat Congressman. A few weeks back we quoted an unnamed legislator saying that, “Allen West was screwed”, a statement which was originally made about made five months before the proposed maps were made public, leading insiders to believe that the fix was in against Allen West. But in light of Weatherford’s comment, it is increasingly clear that this is a fait accompli.

A website, SaveAllenWest, had been set up, but it appears to be too late.

One of the rising stars of the Tea Party is about to be sacrificed by the Republican establishment in Florida, led by someone spinning for Mitt Romney.

On July 15, 1864, a train carrying more than 800 Confederate prisoners of war destined for the Union camp at Elmira, N.Y., was involved in a head-on crash near the sleepy town of Shohola, Pa.

The collision of the two trains on the Erie Railroad along the bank of the Delaware River resulted in the deaths of a large number of Confederate prisoners and Union guards.

As a historian and writer from Madison, N.J., I visited the site after learning of this tragic piece of history. There, I found out about two Confederate lads who died in the crash and were buried in a nearby cemetery.

With a great deal of research, their stories emerged, and the long hidden graves were found. As a result the train wreck becomes a personal story about two soldiers named Johnson, one from Anson County, N.C., and the other from Petersburg, Va. Both served in N.C. regiments, the 8th and 31st. To pay respect to them, my wife, Nancy, and I have taken the role of caretakers and faithfully place the Confederate flag on the gravesites.

The story begins two years earlier, in 1862, when it became apparent the war was going to last longer than anticipated, and both sides were faced with the problem of housing an increased number of prisoners. The Union and Confederacy decided to work out a prisoner exchange plan.

The former Speaker looked incredulously at her questioner and said: "Are you serious?" Happily, such disdain for constitutional concerns is one reason why she is the former Speaker of the House.

Don't worry, dear readers -- be happy. The good news for us is that Sen. Marco Rubio is eligible to be elected president in 2012. And so are Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley. There's been a lot of attention devoted to the original meaning of "natural born citizen of the United States," the governing phrase from Art. II, Sec. 1 of the Constitution. Happily, The Heritage Guide to the Constitution resolves this question for us.

Clearly, says this respected source, what the Founders sought to avoid was foreign intrigue, or intriguers, becoming president. Wise Founders. (Too bad they didn't also say "Marxists need not apply.")

Washington has lit the match on a time bomb called the Iranian economic sanctions. DC and its grudging allies are attempting to shut out the Iranian central bank and keep Iran from selling oil. But Iran has powerful friends…the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India & China). The unintended consequences of the sanctions are that the world is aggressively working to supplant the Dollar as the world reserve currency. Iran just made a deal with India to sell them oil and accept payment in gold. Iran will do this with other nations through the Kish Island Oil Bourse that opened in February, 2008.

The American-led economic warfare, poorly disguised as diplomatic alarm about Iranian nuclear capabilities, is not about splitting the atom or building a bomb. Washington knows that if the oil-producing nations forsake the Dollar to settle all oil transactions, the Dollar is over. Washington has overplayed its hand in this high-stakes poker game. Iran holds the trump card: it sits on an ocean of crude oil that the Europe cannot live without. Washington’s global influence is in steep decline as the world is tired of DC’s bullying tactics. The BRIC nations are rapidly ascending.

Some recent history is in order. Saddam Hussein planned to stop selling Iraqi oil in dollars and switch to the Euro. Muamar Gaddafi of Libya planned to create a new gold-backed African dinar and settle oil payments in the new gold-backed money.

What happened to both of them and their countries? They were attacked by Washington. Both leaders are dead.

Egyptian daily Ruz al-Yusuf reported on Saturday that former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has asked nine World leaders to intervene to allow his family to leave Egypt and to save his life.

In the letters, which were most likely addressed to the United States, France, Britain, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Lebanon, the ailing Mubarak pleaded with the leaders to mount pressure on Egyptian authorities to allow his two sons, Gamal and Alaa – who are also facing trial – and his wife to leave the country without being sent to jail.

Mubarak also reportedly plead with American officials to dissuade Egyptian authorities from sentencing him to death, claiming that the current rulers of Egypt and his historic rivals – the Muslim Brotherhood – will not allow the court to acquit him.

Well, I hope he's not expecting Obama to save him.

The American Tradition Institute (ATI) is going after 12,000 emails sent or received by Michael E. Mann while he was on the staff of the publicly-funded university. Mr. Mann is famous for coming up with one of the “tricks” used to “hide the decline” in global temperatures. On Wednesday, ATI released a small selection of emails it hopes will convince a Prince William County judge that full disclosure of the rest is in the public interest.

In March 2003, for example, a trusted colleague of Mr. Mann’s emailed to find out how the UVA professor arrived at his conclusions. Mr. Mann admitted he was missing crucial data and “can’t seem to dig them up.” Though he was working on this project on the taxpayers’ dime, he provided the information for the researcher’s personal use only. “So please don’t pass this along to others without checking w/ me first,” Mr. Mann wrote. “This is the sort of ‘dirty laundry’ one doesn’t want to fall into the hands of those who might potentially try to distort things.”

David Schnare, a scientist and lawyer who runs ATI’s Environmental Law Center, said he was shocked that anyone claiming to be a scientist wouldn’t keep a detailed log of his research activities. “In science, there is no dirty laundry,” Mr. Schnare told The Washington Times. “Science progresses by proving to yourself that you were wrong, that your hypothesis was in error. Every time you’re wrong, it means you can cut off some area of research and start on a better one.”

I cannot help but notice that the progressives and their media lackeys are inconsistent in the way they choose to express things.

For instance, a year or so ago, they were wailing about the “obscene profits” made by energy companies, in particular Exxon-Mobil. They consistently made their “case” by stating the profit in question in total dollars. Measured this way, the total (in the billions) was indeed impressive. However, when that same profit is restated as a percentage of return on equity, it turns out that the energy companies are really not all that profitable. The “obscene” profits turn out to reflect the size of the companies, in other words, the amount of dollars they are putting at risk in the conduct of their business. No bank or pharmaceutical company (for instance) could exist on the profit margins produced by the energy companies.

Now, the issue of the day is “tax fairness”. So, are the progressives consistent by measuring “fairness” by stating the issue in total dollars? No. Instead they use the nominal marginal tax rate, stated as a percentage. Stated such, we find that Mitt Robamany paid just less than 15% last year while “hard working people” might have paid as much as 35%. Clearly unfair – right? However, if we study the same issue using total dollar amounts, we find that Robamany paid over $3 million in income taxes while about 47% of workers paid $0. Clearly, Robamany (and other wealthy people) are each carrying the tax load for hundreds of people. But the progressives find nothing at all unfair about this because we all know that the wealthy need to be punished for their success.

Indeed, the basic mantra of the progressive movement is Reward Failure, Punish Success. How then can anyone be surprised that we are evolving into a nation of failures who are reduced to dependence on government?

PS: Please do not interpret anything said here as support for Robamany. What I support is truth.

Interested in turning an old tobacco barn into a "man cave"? You can learn how this spring at Edgecombe Community College.

In response to local demand, the college has developed several new courses in the historic preservation trades program, including "Preservation of Farm Structures" on March 17-18 and March 24-25.

Kevin Wilson, owner of Timberfab in Tarboro, will teach methods of preserving historic dependency buildings, like tobacco barns and other barns. Benjamin Curran, historic preservation instructor at ECC, is co-teaching the class. Students will visit several nearby structures and work on various ways of stabilizing the buildings.

"Preservation of Farm Structures" is among 13 weekend historic preservation trades courses that will be offered on the Tarboro campus this spring.

In addition to a certificate that can be obtained through six weekend classes, a one-year diploma and a two-year degree also are available. Several of the weekend classes provide credit toward the diploma or degree in historic preservation.

Edgecombe is one of only five community colleges in the nation that offers a program in historic preservation and the only one in North Carolina.

Hands-on training is what sets Edgecombe's program apart, says Monika Fleming, program chair. "There are a couple of public universities that offer a bachelor's or master's degree, but they don't do the hands-on trades training that we do."

Curran also will instruct a new class in "Millwork," which will teach students how to make and repair molding, frames, and mantels for historic homes. The class will be limited to eight students; dates are to be determined.

Another new class is "Chair Caning," which will be taught over six evenings beginning in late February.

America’s National Treasure Resides in Our Homes, Not the White House

Hard for me to imagine, but I am now 41. Amazing. It seems like yesterday my poofy mullet and parachute pants were all the rage, and Prince had a #1 hit on the radio. Now I’m married to the most beautiful woman, raising six children, and living the American dream. Our country has changed so much since my days of fighting with Carol and Ben on TV. America has always been known as “the land of the free” and “the home of the brave.” It’s the richest, freest nation the world has ever seen. Everyone wants to live here. But as I look around, I’m left with a sinking feeling that America is losing her way. Big time. The soul of our country is sick, and history shows me we are headed for disaster if we don’t change course now.

I’ve been looking around for answers, but all I hear is noise. Everyone is pointing fingers at the Left or the Right, blaming Hollywood or Capitol Hill. Time is flying by too quickly for petty arguments. My children’s future won’t wait. I’ve got to do something now.

Here’s my hunch: Could it be that we have simply forgotten what made us such a great nation in the first place? So many people are waiting around for our leaders to come up with a grand plan to save our nation. But is that really how America got started? What if things actually work the other way around? What if real change doesn’t start at the top but at the bottom? What if the best place to begin transforming our country is not the Oval Office but the dinner table?

For the past year and a half, I’ve been making a film called “Monumental,” and I am thrilled to announce that it’s coming to theaters on March 27. We are creating a live, one-night national event in 500 theaters where audiences can experience a monumental moment together. Then we will release the film in theaters in select cities, while providing helpful new resources to families, churches, and schools who want to go further with what they’ve experienced in the film.

In the film I retrace the footsteps of our Founders from England to America in the hope of discovering our true “national treasure.” I wanted to listen to them, to learn from them. Our forefathers knew we were a forgetful people, that someday we would lose our way as a nation. So they left us “maps” that would guide us back to the source of America’s success. What I discovered is amazing! This is one of the most important journeys of my life. America is worth fighting for, and so are our families. We can still be a “city upon a hill,” but we need to work together. With God’s help, we can turn this thing around. It’s been said, “Footprints in history are not made sitting down,” and I couldn’t agree more. I hope that our children will mark this moment as the turning point when we stood up, came together, and reclaimed the true national treasure of America.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus plans to honor the late Congressman John Murtha by giving his name to the Navy's new LPD (Transport Dock Ship), to be launched in 2013.

In doing so, Sec. Mabus is breaking the Navy's tradition of naming its San Antonio-class amphibious transports after American cities. He is also honoring a man who:

1) was one of the most corrupt members of the U.S. Congress, and

2) called our Marines murderers who killed Iraqi women and children "in cold blood."

We believe that such a man does not deserve to be honored by the U.S. Navy. If you agree, please help us petition Secretary Mabus to reconsider this outrageous decision.

The document describes itself not as "the U.S. Constitution" or the "Constitution of the United States," but as a "Constitution FOR the United States of America." With this in mind, read what follows in the preamble as the purposes of this instrument: "forming a more perfect Union," "common defense," and "general welfare."

A DeKalb County family’s dog was shot and killed Tuesday night by a police officer who went to the wrong house when responding to a domestic incident, Channel 2 Action News reported. The officer went to Bobbie Currie’s home on Silva Court around 9 p.m. in response to a domestic dispute call with a possibly armed person.

The family’s German shepherd, which was chained in the garage, lunged at the officer, and was shot and killed, according to Channel 2. Currie’s husband, Anthony, told Channel 2 that the officer also pointed his gun at him and told him to put his hands up.

“I said, ‘Why [did] you shoot my dog?’ And he said, ‘Well, I’ll blow your brains out,’” Anthony Currie said.

A DeKalb police supervisor sent to the scene said the officer made an error.

“Subsequent investigation determined that the actual address that he was looking for was actually across the street,” DeKalb police Lt. Dane Cunningham told Channel 2.

The officer is not facing disciplinary action pending an internal investigation, Channel 2 said.

I don't despise the police because one of them happens to be an idiot who can't read a street address, is needlessly abusive, and is intoxicated with his government-granted license to kill. I despise them because they ALWAYS defend their evil "brethren" and refuse to hold them accountable no matter what they do. They have no honor and they refuse to be held accountable for even the most despicable actions.

At this point, I would be far more confident having to rely upon the actual Mafia than in the badge gang. It's no longer any mystery why the annals of military history are rife with examples of the dreadful behavior and cowardly performance of police units.

Even street criminals usually don't shoot dogs. Especially not dogs that are tied up and can't possibly hurt them.

High Noon: Ron Paul will defeat Mitt Romney in the Virginia primary

In a dramatic head-to-head contest that will win huge attention throughout the political world, I now believe that Ron Paul will defeat Mitt Romney in the Virginia primary. The implications could be enormous. This result would dramatize the fact that a majority of Republican primary voters favor a candidate more conservative than Mitt Romney. This prospect could also inspire the mother of all money bombs for the Ron Paul campaign.

If I were the campaign manager for the Gingrich and Santorum campaigns, I would be suggesting that all conservatives vote for Ron Paul in Virginia. Ditto the conservative movement leaders from all conservative points of view and throughout the conservative media.

So far, the pundit debate has largely missed the point that Mitt Romney has hovered between 26 percent and 38 percent in various state votes and polls. It is ridiculous for anyone to suggest "this race is over" or "this race will soon be over" (as many pundits wrongly have) because, obviously, the nominee will need 50 percent-plus-one of all delegates. I emphasize delegates.

What is certainly unique about Virginia, so far, is the prospect of a straight Ron Paul versus Mitt Romney contest, with no other candidates.

Slave port unearthed in Brazil

Not far from here at least 500,000 Africans took their first steps into slavery in colonial Brazil, which took in far more slaves than the United States and where now half of its 200 million citizens claim African descent.

The “Cais do Valongo” – the Valongo Wharf – was the busiest of all slave ports in the Americas and has been buried for almost two centuries under subsequent infrastructure projects and dirt.

That is, until developers seeking to turn Rio’s shabby port neighborhood into a posh tourist center allowed teams of archaeologists to check out what was being unearthed.

Skeletons found in Dorset mass grave 'were mercenaries'

A mass grave in Dorset containing 54 decapitated skeletons was a burial ground for violent Viking mercenaries, according to a Cambridge archaeologist.

The burial site at Ridgeway Hill was discovered in 2009.

Archaeologists found the bodies of 54 men who had all been decapitated and placed in shallow graves with their heads piled up to one side.

Carbon dating and isotype tests revealed the bodies were Scandinavian and dated from the 11th Century.

At this time Vikings were constantly attacking Anglo-Saxons on the English south coast.

One person was killed and two were injured Thursday afternoon in a shootout inside a Slaton house during a burglary, Lubbock County’s sheriff said.

Sheriff Kelly Rowe said investigators believed the shooting started when 69-year-old Fred Melcher and 51-year-old Edith Ayers entered Melcher’s Slaton house and found a man they likely knew inside just before 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of Lynn Street.

Rowe said investigators believe the suspected burglar, whose name was not released, fired several shots and Melcher fired at least one shot in return, likely the shot that killed the suspect.

Melcher and Ayers were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where they remained in critical and serious condition, respectively, late Thursday.

Rep. Gosar Continues to Push “No Confidence” in Holder Resolution

Attorney General Eric Holder -- recently caught lying under oath concerning his knowledge of his department’s Fast and Furious program -- may be moving a step closer to the inside of a jail cell.

On Thursday, February 2nd, Chairman Darrell Issa’s Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold another hearing on the disastrous Fast and Furious operation.

Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar, a member of that committee, is also pushing a resolution of “no confidence” in Holder’s management -- or lack of management -- of the Justice Department.

That resolution, H. Res. 490, provides a course of action for the momentum generated by that hearing.

H. Res. 490 finds that, as a result of “Holder’s failure to properly control, monitor, or establish Operation Fast and Furious, it is likely Mexican nationals were killed or wounded by weapons sold through this scheme” -- and that the victims of Holder’s incompetence included U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

It goes on to resolve that the House has “lost confidence” in Holder, which is, basically, a call for him to resign.

Clearly, the Justice Department believes it can stonewall Issa’s inquiry and bull its way through questions concerning its criminal malfeasance. Adoption of the Gosar resolution would make it much, much more difficult to do so.

The State believes it has respect. Maybe in some ignorant corners that might be true. It is more likely that what it really has- where it thinks it sees respect- is fear.

Fear is not respect. Fear, if controlled, leads a person to watch for the enemy to lose focus for a split second, which provides an opportunity to blow him away. Fear often looks like respect to the bad guy. He would be wrong but he won't realize it until it's too late.

And once the fearful begin to strike back, those who have no fear, but have been waiting for the time to be right, will join.

Study: No link between junk food in schools and childhood obesity

A recently published study suggests that First Lady Michelle Obama has been firing blanks in her war on childhood obesity.

The report, which appears in the January 2012 issue of the journal Sociology of Education, reveals that researchers were unable to establish a correlation between obesity and attending a school where “competitive foods”—aka, soft drinks, candy bars, and chips—are available to students. The research team was headed by Jennifer Van Hook, professor of sociology and demography at Pennsylvania State University. In the longitudinal study, they tracked the body mass indexes of 19,450 students from fifth through eighth grade. The team compared the BMIs of children in schools where junk food was sold and in schools where it was not. They evaluated children who moved into schools that sold junk food with those who did not, and children who never attended a school that sold snacks with those who did.

No matter what combination of variables they tried, the researchers could never find a conclusive link between eating junk food and obesity.

Van Hook is quoted by the New York Times as concluding, “Food preferences are established early in life. This problem of childhood obesity cannot be placed solely in the hands of schools.”

Nor in the hands, one might add, of well-meaning but misguided first ladies.
