The Giffords Shooting Changes Nothing

"While the murder of 6 bystanders, the wounding of 14 people, and the attempted murder of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, is indeed a horrible smear in the history of America, it is but one of many.

This fact seems to have eluded the mainstream media, which is declaring (rather prematurely) that the very political climate of our nation will be irrevocably altered by said event. Before any dead had been put to rest, before Jared Loughner had even been officially charged, the MSM unleashed a hailstorm of editorials linking the shooting to the Tea Party, conservatives, gun rights advocates, Constitutionalists, Libertarians, Sarah Palin (as if she has any real influence), and “divisive political rhetoric” overall.

Yet again, the media thrust its sinewy index finger of doom at the Liberty Movement, and yet again I had to see the sniveling sourpuss of SPLC representative Mark Potok spewing lines from his standardized anti-Constitutionalist playbook. Of course, as it turned out, Loughner’s political beliefs were decidedly left-leaning, and his affiliations with the groups the establishment accused were non-existent"

2nd Most Dangerous City Cuts Police Force In Half

"The second most dangerous city in the United States just laid off half its police force and nearly a third of their fire department. This is in a state where honest folks can barely own a gun without breaking the law and getting sent to prison. Anyone still in that city, if not the whole state, with any sense should vote with their feet, now!"

"Ireland as a retreat environment We’ve all heard about the economic disaster that has recently befallen Ireland. The banking crisis has hit hard the country that less than five years ago was the third-richest nation per capita in the world. Unemployment is rising fast – almost 25% of under-25 year olds are out of work. And the economy is now effectively controlled by the terms of the recent IMF and EU bailout. So why consider Ireland for your survival retreat?

Tricking Us Into War: The Cases Of Lincoln And Roosevelt [John V. Denson]

"Despite the miracles of capitalism, it doesn't do well in popularity polls. One of the reasons is that capitalism is always evaluated against the non-existent, non-realizable utopias of socialism or communism. Any earthly system, when compared to a Utopia will pale in comparison. But for the ordinary person, capitalism, with all of its warts, is superior to any system yet devised to deal with our everyday needs and desires."

A Person I Admire, By Dixie And Daddy

A Person I Admire

"The person I admire is Robert E. Lee, the general of the
Confederate Army. He's my Dad's favorite person. Mr. Lee
was an excellent horseman. He, and his horse Traveller,
led the Confederate soldiers to fight against the Yankees.
His four daughters admired his courage, bravery and his
Southern accent. Later in life, Lee's hair turned white. His
beard was always trimmed neatly. He presented a commanding
appearance, straight, alert and intelligence. He was never known
to smoke, drink alcoholic beverages or use profane language.

General Lee was an American hero. Perhaps one day, I can be like him."

Lee, (By Dixie Townsend, Nine Years Old)
========
Edward Lee, in my estimation, was the greatest man this nation has ever produced. He graduated from the United States Military Academy without a single demerit, a feat that has been unequaled to this day. He also was second in his class and achieved the coveted cadet rank of Adjutant. He served over thirty years in the United States Army and General Winfield Scott stated that Lee's exploit before the Battle of Contreras in Mexico was "the greatest feat of physical and moral courage" he had ever known. General Scott marked him for high command and thought the cost would be cheap if the United States could absolutely insure Lee's life at the cost of five million dollars a year. He proclaimed that Lee "was the very best soldier I ever saw in the field."

In 1856, as dark clouds loomed, Lee stated that "There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil."

When war finally came General Scott offered him command of the Union Army, but Lee , after pacing the floor all night, decided he could not fight against his own people. Lee's final written words to General Scott were "Save in defense of my native state, I never desire again to draw my sword."

After leading the Army of Northern Virginia to many victories against overwhelming odds, he surrendered and asked his men to go home and be good citizens. A while later he was offered $50,000 for the use of his name by a northern insurance company, but Lee politely informed them "Sirs, my name is the heritage of my parents. It is all I have, and it is not for sale." He also stated that concerning his previous actions "I could have taken no other course without dishonor, and if it were all to be done over again, I should act in precisely the same manner."

In 1868, the New York Herald proposed nominating Lee for President, but Lee by then President of Washington College where he had but one rule and that was "every man must be a gentleman."

Theodore Roosevelt characterized Lee as "the very greatest of all the great captains that the English-speaking peoples have brought forth." Winston Churchill stated that Lee was "one of the noblest Americans who ever lived."

In closing, I think the words of General/President Eisenhower would be appropriate concerning a question as to why he kept a picture of Lee in his office. He stated that Lee "was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history......From deep conviction I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee's calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul."

"If any American father were asked which of our great men he would most want his own son to resemble, the father, if he were wise, would be compelled to answer, 'Robert E. Lee.'" '

Judah P. Benjamin's Farewell Address

Northern sentiment against those of the Jewish faith was evident prior to 1861 though the South demonstrated a more liberal and tolerant society; two Southern Jews had risen to the US Senate: Judah P. Benjamin of Louisiana and David Yulee of Florida. Discrimination against Jews in the North continued after war began as Lincoln’s army chaplains were required to be “regularly ordained ministers of some Christian denomination. In contrast, the Southern military had no denominational requirement and merely specified that “clergymen” serve the regiments.

The War Between the States Sesquicentennial:

Judah P. Benjamin of Louisiana

“Historians consider Benjamin’s farewell address to the U.S. Senate on New Year’s Eve, 1860, one of the great speeches in American history. The gallery was packed to hear the most eloquent voice of the south. It was a moment both of tragedy and triumph as he pleaded with his colleagues against the war of brothers to come:

“And now Senators…indulge in no vain delusion that duty or conscience, interest or honor, imposes upon you the necessity of invading our States or shedding the blood of our people. You have not possible justification for it.”

Varina [Howell Davis] wrote that “his voice rose over the vast audience distinct and clear…he held his audience spellbound for over an hour and so still were they that a whisper could be heard…”

“[Benjamin continued] What may be the fate of this horrible contest, no man can tell…but this much, I will say: the fortunes of war may be adverse to our arms, you may desolate into our peaceful land, and with torch and fire you may set our cities in flame…you may, under the protection of your advancing armies, give shelter to the furious fanatics who desire, and profess to desire, nothing more than to add all the horrors of a servile insurrection to the calamities of civil war…but you can never subjugate us, you never can convert the free sons of the soil into vassals, paying tribute to your power; and you never, never can degrade them to the level of an inferior and servile race. Never! Never!”

There was an immediate rush of reaction to the speech from the Southern contingent and tumultuous applause from the galleries. Varina reported that “many ladies were in tears. The Vice President tried in vain to prevent the applause but could not control the multitude who were wild with enthusiasm. There were even grudging compliments from the Northern press and a quote from a London correspondent that “it was better than our Benjamin [Disraeli] could have done.”

The enthusiasm in the South was matched by the venom in the North. The Boston Transcript of January 5, 1861, published an editorial under the heading “The Children of Israel” in which it attacked the support Benjamin and other Southern Jews gave to secession as indicative of the disloyalty of all American Jews. Senator Henry Wilson of Massachusetts, who would be elected Vice President of the United States in 1872, condemned Benjamin because “his bearing, his tone of voice, his words, all gave evidence…that his heart was in this foul and wicked plot to dismember the Union, to overthrow the government of his adopted country which gives equality of rights even to that race that stoned prophets and crucified the Redeemer of the world.”

[Northern leader] Andrew Johnson [of Tennessee] told Charles Francis Adams of the distinguished Boston family, “There’s another Jew – that miserable Benjamin! He looks on a country and a government as he would a suit of old clothes. He sold out the old one; and he would sell out the new if he could in doing so make two or three millions.”

Remembering Robert E. Lee: A Week-Long Observance

North Carolina’s Legal Holiday Observes Lee’s Birthday January 19th

General Robert E. Lee and Son

Lee the Man of Honor:

“The public images of Lee are many. There is the young, handsome officer of the Engineer Corps, the dutiful husband and affectionate father, the fighting soldier of the Mexican War, and the world-renowned commander of the Army of Northern Virginia. And there is the peace-loving, quiet, fatherly college president. They are all Lee, all facets of the same basically simple, straightforward person.

Many of Lee’s best qualities came from his mother, for he hardly knew his father. Dr. Wiley says:

“He grew up to be more of a Carter than a Lee. The outstanding traits of the Carter family were geniality, devotion to family – they intermarried to a confusing extent – loyalty to community, and devotion to church. The Carter’s were traditionally religious, but none was fanatic. They mixed revealed religion and noblesse oblige in a delightful manner, with little thought of creed or system. Lee’s mother was a true Carter. She taught him to revere the Carter code, and to avoid the pitfalls into which his father had fallen; namely, recklessness, extravagance, debt and irresponsibility in business matters. She held up constantly to Robert the axioms sacred to the Carter family: economy, moderation, self-control, courtesy, gentility, honor and devotion to duty.”

It is these old-fashioned virtues which make Lee a symbol of all that is best in the Anglo-American tradition. He should be remembered not merely as Lee the soldier or even as Lee the educator, but also as Lee the man – the man of honor, the great gentleman, good and decent human being who others – even his enemies – knew could be trusted without reservation.

“His life was gentle, and the elements

So mix’s in him that Nature might stand up

And say to all the world “This was a man.”

"Today we take a moment to remember the birth anniversary of Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), one of the greatest military commanders in American history. He was also a great man of faith who gave his all for the cause of liberty and states' rights, which we at The Patriot Post hold so dear."

"China democracy advocates who later took refuge in the West testified that Wang Wei-lin was taken into a nearby hotel where, out of view, he was quietly strangled to death.

That driver of the lead tank, a young officer in the People’s Liberation Army, was also killed by state security forces, China democracy refugees tell us. After all, if he had followed his orders, he would have swiftly run over the brave young man in the white shirt. There would have been no dramatic standoff. Thousands of Chinese students would likewise be overrun by the regime’s tanks and shot down as they fled Tienanmen Square."

Their bodies were burned. China’s rulers soon washed down the bricks of their capital’s ceremonial center"

Oppose Extending The Patriot Act

Originally passed in 2001 as a ready response but temporary measure to the 9/11 attacks, the Patriot Act was renewed in 2005, 2009, and in 2010, in what appears to be a classic example of kicking the can down the road. By extending the Patriot Act one year at a time, Congressmen are relieved of the burden of having this very unpopular mass surveillance bill’s permanent passage on their record. Instead, they continue to fly under the radar eschewing backlash from the folks back home, ignoring the fact that it is now a permanent and critical element that has drastically changed America, and not just for the traveling public.

The purpose of H.R. 67 is “To extend expiring provisions of the USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 and Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 until February 29, 2012.” It was introduced by a “conservative” Republican, Mike Rogers from Michigan, and has no sponsors as of this writing. It is a carbon copy of the previous year's expansion legislation, without promised reforms of any kind.

Rogers was named chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence by House Speaker John Boehner. In a short bio on his website, Rogers is said to have helped author the original Patriot Act and all its subsequent renewals. He is a former Army officer and FBI Special Agent, dedicated to fighting "organized crime and public corruption in Chicago,” which might explain his penchant for wanting to peek into private lives in defiance of the Fourth Amendment.

Senator Patrick Leahy, (D-Vermont) has placed the Patriot Act Extension high on the priority list for his Senate Judiciary Committee which will begin hearings on this and several other issues January 26. He also intends to delve into privacy issues such as the body scanning of all citizens at airports and tracking private American’s online transactions and activities. Even though he claims he is concerned about “Constitutional Rights in the Digital Age,” he sees nothing wrong with updating the Electronic Communications Privacy Act portion “so that security agencies have the tools needed to keep us safe from cyber threats.”

The FBI actually wants the statute found in the Electronic Communications Privacy Act that allows the issuance of National Security Letters authorizing the searching of phone records and Internet activity, to be greatly expanded. This would grant the FBI access to incredibly private information -- the websites you visit, search history, social networking activity and even information pinpointing your location -- without probable cause or court order.

Since the founding of these United States and adoption of the Fourth Amendment, but before the Patriot Act, intrusive investigative techniques had to be properly authorized under the law. Reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and due process were the guardians of personal privacies. Under the Patriot Act, these have been disregarded.

Will the new Congress act responsibly and unite to protect Constitutionally guaranteed privacy and liberty, voting against this massive information collection, power-grabbing scheme? Or will they spew forth the usual jargon citing grave threats against national security and peace, then voting to gradually eliminate our civil liberties and rights under their self-appointed role as overzealous security guards for the homeland.

In order to restore Constitutional protections, whispers of the Patriot Act’s extension in February 2011 must turn into a roar of thunderous objections. Help put and end to expanding the existing domestic spying program; contact your Senators and Representatives and insist they vote against the Patriot Act renewal in order to let the sun go down on this one, forever.

Thanks,

Your friends at The John Birch Society

Shades Of A Christmas Story: Boy Rescued After Tongue Gets Stuck On Pole

"It will not be denied that power is of an encroaching nature and that it ought to be effectually restrained from passing the limits assigned to it. After discriminating, therefore, in theory, the several classes of power, as they may in their nature be legislative, executive, or judiciary, the next and most difficult task is to provide some practical security for each, against the invasion of the others."

GUNS AMERICA

New from Smith & Wesson Custom Shop

The Smith & Wesson Custom Shop announced three new products for SHOT specifically for the handgun hunting market. If you are not familiar with the Custom Shop, these are not special order guns. Smith & Wesson maintains the Custom Shop to provide consumers with handguns that are a notch above, and have features and usability that would otherwise be done in an aftermarket setting by a gunsmith. By offering these guns as standard catalog items, S&W can provide its customers with a custom grade action job, a 10 pound recoil spring, integral accessory rails, fluted barrels, compensators and custom finishes, none of which are stock on an out of the box Smith & Wesson.

The first gun is the Model 629 in all stainless with a vapor deposition process coating. It comes with a Leapers red and green dot sight, a compensator and trigger block. The Model 629 is of course a .44 Magnum and capable of taking most North American game. The MSRP is $1,329.

The new Custom Shop Model 67 is a .17HMR masterpiece with a 12” fluted barrel, custom wood grip, and includes both a bi-pod and the same red dot, green dot scope. MSRP is $1,299.

And the big boy in our line up is the 460, one of Smith & Wesson’s super revolvers that has come to us only within the last few years. This new model is a custom package that includes an un-fluted cylinder (which is stronger and can withstand more pressure from hot loads), a 14” fluted barrel, a custom muzzle break made specifically for this .460 caliber pistol, and it ships with the bi-pod. MSRP is $1,419.
