GRNC Makes the Difference in (Gun!) Key Races

There were several races in the runoff where Grass Roots North Carolina-Political Victory Fund made the difference for gun owners. A quick break down follows. The races for US House districts 9, 11 and North Carolina Senate District 41 were victories for GRNC-PVF gaining solid pro-gunners ROBERT PITTENGER, MARK MEADOWS and JEFF TARTE the nominations.

NC Senate 41 was particularly poignant with Tarte winning by 203 votes with the GRNC-PVF mailing, email alerts and automated calls in the district more than accounting for the margin of victory. Indeed, when “The Charlotte Observer” interviewed voters, the newspaper reported: “After casting her ballot at Lake Norman Baptist Church, Ruth Houser said she voted for Tarte because of his stand on gun control laws.” Given the failure of Republican leadership recently to pass House Bill 111 for restaurant carry, GRNC-PVF is particularly focusing on electing pro-gun leaders to the Senate.

US House District 8 was really a no lose for gun owners in the Republican primary. GRNC-PVF recommended candidate Scott Keadle due to his eagerness to provide leadership in the US House on gun issues, but winner Richard Hudson is a solid candidate that gun owners should get behind to remove Larry Kissell. The Lt. Governor race is much the same with GRNC-PVF recommending Tony Gurley due to the fact that Dan Forrest initially did not turn in a questionnaire. When Forrest did rectify this he scored 96% and four stars (****). GRNC-PVF will look forward to supporting him in the November election.

Indian Affairs Under Lincoln

William P. Dole was Lincoln’s patronage-picked Commissioner of Indian Affairs, appointed to office on March 8, 1861. Dole “had made the necessary bargains that swung the votes of the Pennsylvania and Indiana delegations to Lincoln,” and thus won the new president’s first federal appointment. As Republican party railroad support and homesteading policy was attracting white settlers to the West, many tribal lands and previous Indian treaties got in the way of progress.

Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman
North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission
www.ncwbts150.com
"The Official Website of the North Carolina WBTS Sesquicentennial"

Indian Affairs Under Lincoln:

“Dole began working closely with [Wisconsin Republican] Senator James R. Doolittle, chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs, to conclude treaties with all Indian tribes not yet covered by binding agreements. Nearly every treaty contained the Indian Bureau’s careful description of tribal lands, along with an equally careful disclaimer inserted by senators to eliminate any possibility that the treaty might be interpreted as a recognition of Indian title to the land.

When a few Southern tribes joined the Confederacy, Dole began to press for confiscation of their lands in present Oklahoma so that other tribes might be settled on them after the war. This idea had a great deal of appeal, since it seemed to solve the problem of where to put the Indians of Kansas and Nebraska whose land was coveted by white settlers and speculators.

[Episcopal] Bishop Henry B. Whipple had called for an end to whiskey smuggling on the reservation….[and] During the fall of 1862. Bishop Whipple visited Lincoln to plead for mercy for the 303 Indian warriors sentenced to death by [General John Pope’s] military court for their part in the Sioux uprising.

Dole interpreted Pope’s [draconian resettlement] proposal to mean that the general wanted to herd all Indians together in one vast reserve where white civilization could not intrude. He…wondered just how Pope proposed to bring hostile warriors onto his reservation without involving the nation in a bloody Indian war.

Something very much like Pope’s policy was being tried in New Mexico with disastrous results. During 1862 and 1863, the army moved several thousand Navajos and Mescalero Apaches onto a reservation….both groups rebelled at the harsh surroundings and the strict control imposed by the military. Indians fled from the reservation faster than troops could find them and return them to captivity.

[It was] a military operation that brought Dole’s tenure to an end. Colonel John M. Chivington and his volunteer militiamen massacred a sleeping camp of Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians at Sand Creek, Colorado Territory, in late November 1864. An outraged Congress immediately demanded the removal of the army officers, Indian agents and politicians who were in any way involved in the events leading up to the episode.

Lincoln tried to save the career of old his friend from Illinois, but a few weeks after Lincoln’s assassination President Andrew Johnson removed Dole without much ceremony.”

The official denial of racial motive is its surest confirmation

Ol' Remus
VERBATIM POST

Consider how we've come to fill in what news reports omit. Who actually reads about violent "unruly youths" and pictures Dick and Jane gone bad? How did it get to where official denial of racial motive is its surest confirmation?

It's impossible to have an 'honest dialogue' about racial violence. We're not supposed to notice, much less comment. Yet we do notice. For instance, we're asked to believe it's simple robbery when whites are knocked down and beaten nearly to death, then robbed, and the perps post a video on a black web site. Oh wait, it's about here we're supposed to say it doesn't matter if the perps are black, white or green. It matters to the perps, it should matter to us. And yes, it's beginning to matter. For those who still don't understand, imagine the hysteria were the races reversed.

Violence by blacks against whites has been rising steeply since Obama and Holder took office. While coincidence only suggests cause, the notion of semi-sanctioned racial aggression is becoming difficult to refute as the evidence piles up. Imagine street brawlers willing to take a hit for the cause. Storm Hoodies, say. At the very least, "Beat Whitey Night" in Iowa and at the Wisconsin State Fair in times past said restraint has given way everywhere, the restraint being the common decency one person extends to any other person. The steady stream of outrages confirms it. Here are some recent news reports:

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Chicago - Three men jumped out of a limousine and attacked people on the street while another videotaped the assaults from the inside the limo.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Mobile, Alabama - A woman was shot in the chest while cautioning a group of men speeding through her neighborhood. Her teen daughter witnessed the murder.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Update: 17-year-old Trayon Washington has been arrested and charged. See the article for details of the shooting and photos.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Richland County, South Carolina - Two men tied up a wheelchair-bound man, tortured and shot him "execution-style," then took the woman to a wooded area and shot her in the head.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Miami, Florida - A man who was brutally beaten in downtown Miami over the weekend took his first steps since the attack. Includes three videos.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Caruthersville, Missouri - Two teenage girls punched and kicked a mentally disabled man and posted a video of the attack on Facebook. Article includes video.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Columbus, Ohio - Thirty youths randomly assaulted old people, children and women after a fireworks show while cops looked the other way.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gifPhiladelphia - A street mob assaulted people as they left the 4th of July fireworks show.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Philadelphia - A benefit was held to help pay a young mother's medical and dental bills after being punched in the face during a March flash mob spree.

art-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif Albany, Georgia - The July 4th fireworks show was suspended after violent youths invaded the park and attacked families.

Consider: much of urban mass transit has become too dangerous to use, elections are becoming racial referendums, schools have to be run like penitentiaries, public spaces are being terrorized, some version of John Derbyshire's The Talkart-link-symbol-tiny-grey-arrow-only.gif is becoming common in ordinary homes, in short, the nation is resegregating in the worst possible way—and we're told only unreconstructed racists would be so ill-willed as to notice racial violence.

"Unruly youths" don't form mobs by accident, then happen to invade peaceful places and select only whites by chance, violate them inadvertently and post videos on the net as a momentary lapse of their otherwise high standards. And we're to believe it happens exactly this way every time, in every place, coast to coast, week after week, by merest coincidence.

While the media puzzles out how to report the news by not reporting it, while law enforcement tells us what's happening isn't really happening, the adults are talking and telling the truth as-is, namely, liberal society if not civilization itself is under attack by unrestrained and evidentally unrestrainable, self-announced, violent tribalism. Those who can't handle the truth may now leave the room, but it'll be a bit lonely out there.

An Asian Student, Legally Resident, WritesTo Pat Buchanan

VDARE.com note: This letter is a shortened version of one that was sent to us by a mutual friend, who says that Pat Buchanan replied graciously. The writer was willing to let his name be used, but we declined. We thought he was revealing a touching, but in this case inappropriate, faith in America. The U.S. education and immigration bureaucracies are in the hands of people with their own ideas of what America should be. They might well decide that anyone who agrees with Pat Buchanan about immigration issues should be asked to leave the country—for being un-American.

Dear Mr. Buchanan,

My name is ——. I am from [Asian country] and have been legally in the United States for almost six years on a student visa. I currently work as a nurse at — Hospital in —, [State], with a legal work permit or OPT card that will be good for one year under my student visa.

A friend told me about your book Suicide of a Superpower, where you talk about illegal immigration.

I completely agree with you. Since I have suffered the inconsistencies of the official immigration system in the USA, I decided to write you this letter.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Biology from — University and a Master's degree in Anatomy from —University, [Asian country]. I taught Anatomy at —University medical school in [Asian country] for two years before coming to the USA to continue my education. I planned to go to the nursing school at the University of [Southern State], but I did not have enough money. I entered the nursing program at — Community College instead.

When I was in an English class at — Community College, we discussed the idea of allowing illegal aliens to go to school. Nobody in the class supported it, but I actually agreed at that time that illegal aliens be given some education, so they could be productive, instead of living a life of crime.

But as time passed by, I have experienced things that completely changed my mind. Most significantly, I saw the disparity between how I was treated as a legal student, and how others who are illegal are treated.

Black Confederate in Gen. Forrest’s raid

Black Confederate in Gen. Forrest’s raid | Nelson Winbush, Civil War, Heritage, History, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Murfreesboro, Murfreesboro Raid, Event
Nelson Winbush with his Confederate veteran grandfather.

========

The Murfreesboro Post
VERBATIM

Nelson bears a striking resemblance to his grandfather, especially in person. He attended the SCV Convention and we had a pleasant talk. Pictures later. I mentioned to him that didn't your wife die a few years ago and he replied that it had been 8, but he was 83 years old and didn't have enough time to train another one!:) He is a staunch Confederate.

As Confederate cavalry reenactors thunder down East Main street Saturday to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Nathan Bedford Forrest’s successful raid on the Rutherford County Courthouse, spectators may see an elderly black gentleman in the crowd wearing a confederate flag necktie, looking on in pride.

He is Nelson Winbush, the grandson of a black confederate veteran who rode with Forrest, and he is an advocate for historical accuracy and honesty when it comes to the telling and retelling of our Civil War heritage.

Winbush’s grandfather, Louis Napoleon Nelson, was recruited as a slave by Nathan Bedford Forrest, but fought as a free man of color during the last 18 months of the war.

He was a Private in the 7th Tennessee Cavalry under Forrest and fought at pivotal battles such as Shiloh, Lookout Mountain, Bryce’s Crossroads and Vicksburg.

At Shiloh, he served as a chaplain even though he couldn’t read or write, which was a position never held by any “colored” Union soldier, and he consistently attended 39 United Confederate Veterans reunions.

He attended his final reunion in 1934, and a Sons of Confederate Veterans Chapter in West Tennessee is named in his honor.

Nelson remembers sitting on his grandfather’s knee listening to his Civil War stories until the age of five.

Winbush, 83, was born in Ripley, Tenn., the son of Isaac and Ganelle Winbush.

He grew up in his grandfather’s home, and left the ancestral residence in 1955 to take a job as a teacher in Kissimmee, Fla.

When his grandfather died, the casket was draped with the Confederate flag, and Winbush has since become a champion of the Confederate battle flag and its proper place in history.

He characterizes recent controversies over the display of the flag and the opposing sides of the debate as “just dumb.

“Neither side (of the debate) knows what the flag represents,” Winbush said. “It’s dumb and dumber. You can turn it around, but it’s still two dumb bunches.”

Winbush still actively and proudly speaks about his ancestor’s service during the war and the lessons he learned sitting at his grandfather’s knee.

“At Shiloh, my grandfather served as a chaplain even though he couldn’t read or write,” said Winbush, who bolstered his points with photos, letters and newspapers that used to belong to his grandfather. “I’ve never heard of a black Yankee holding such an office, so that makes him a little different.”

Winbush said his grandfather, who also served as a “scavenger,” never had any qualms about fighting for the South.

He had plenty of chances to make a break for freedom, but never did.

Winbush said Southern blacks and whites often lived together as extended families, adding slaves and slave owners were outraged when Union forces raided their homes. He said history books rarely make mention of this.

“When the master and his older sons went to war, who did he leave his families with?” asked Winbush, whose grandfather remained with his former owners 12 years after the hostilities ended. “It was with the slaves. Were his (family members) mistreated? Hell, no!

“They were protected.”

According to Winbush, more than 90,000 blacks, some of them free, fought for the Confederacy.

In fact, field reports submitted by Union officers involved in Forrest’s Murfreesboro raid reported a multitude of black confederate soldiers riding into town with Forrest on that fateful day in 1862.

Winbush has come under fire by various groups over the years for his controversial views.

The NAACP and similar organizations have criticized Winbush for his support of what they believe are neo-Confederate causes; they think he misunderstands the history of the South.

But Winbush contends those groups misunderstand the history of the South.

Winbush has said in the past that he would have fought by his grandfather’s side in the 7th Tennessee Cavalry led by Gen. Nathan Bedford Forest.

“People ask why a black person would fight for the Confederacy. (It was) for the same damned reason a white Southerner did,” he said.

Sons of Confederate Veterans' to re-enact Forrest's Raid
On Saturday, the streets of Murfreesboro will ring once again with the hoofbeats of a mythical Confederate general on the 150th anniversary of his daring raid on the Rutherford County Courthouse.

Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest reached near godlike status in Rutherford County on July 13, 1862 when his famed cavalry corps surprised the federal garrison in Murfreesboro, resulting in a complete surrender by Union forces under Gen. Thomas Crittenden and the rescue of over a dozen prominent Murfreesboro and Woodbury citizens who were to be hung simply for suspicion of confederate sympathies.

Folks have the opportunity to witness living history when the Murfreesboro Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans hosts the Armies of Tennessee in a re-enactment of the raid at 9 a.m. July 14 on the Historic Square in Murfreesboro.

2012 is the year of anniversaries for Murfreesboro and Rutherford County, with MTSU’s centennial, Murfreesboro’s bicentennial, the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, and the 35th anniversary of Uncle Dave Macon Days.

The raid will follow a living history encampment at Oaklands Historic Mansion, where the National Convention of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will celebrate Forrest’s birthday with a black-eyed pea and sweet potato supper on the grounds the previous evening.

Troops will assemble at 8:30 a.m. for their march to the courthouse where federal troops will be encamped on the west side of the Square.

The entire re-enactment will serve as a kickoff for the 35th Uncle Dave Macon Days Motorless Parade, which will begin immediately afterward.

The reenactment of these events is expected to draw a large crowd to the downtown area including Sons of Confederate Veterans National Conventioners, along with visitors to the Saturday Farmers Market and Uncle Dave Macon Days Motorless Parade.

Resisting New England’s Cultural Revolution

Despite the destruction of their political autonomy and independence, devastation of their land, homes and economy, and imposition of a foreign culture and missionaries upon them, the traditions and folkways of the American South have survived to this day.

Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman
North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission
www.ncwbts150.com
"The Official Website of the North Carolina WBTS Sesquicentennial"

Resisting New England’s Cultural Revolution:

“In defense of their different cultures, the two sections also fought differently. The armies of the North were at first very much like those of Fairfax in the English Civil War; gradually they became another New Model Army, ruthless, methodical and efficient. The Army of Northern Virginia, important parts of it at least, consciously modeled itself upon the beau sabreurs of Prince Rupert. At the same time, the Confederate armies of the southwest marched into battle behind the cross of St. Andrew, and called themselves “Southrons” on the model of their border ancestors.

The events of the war itself radically transformed Northern attitudes toward Southern folkways. As casualty lists grew longer Northern war aims changed from an intention merely to resist the expansion of Southern culture to a determination to transform it. As this attitude spread through the Northern States the Civil War became a cultural revolution.

After the War….The Republican coalition dominated national politics by its electoral majorities in the north, and by military occupation in the South. Radical reconstruction was an attempt to impose by force the cultures of New England and the midlands upon the coastal and highland South. The Southern States were compelled to accept Yankee constitutions and Yankee judges, Yankee politics and Yankee politicians, Yankee schools and Yankee schoolma’ams, Yankee capitalists and a Yankee labor system.

The cultural revolution continued in some parts of the South until 1876. It succeeded for a time in modifying many Southern institutions….with the exception of slavery itself, most effects lasted only as long as they were supported by Northern bayonets. As long as the old folkways survived in the South, it was inevitable that the material and institutional order of Southern life would rapidly revive when Yankee soldiers went home.

After the elections of 1876…Union troops were withdrawn. Yankee school systems were abolished; Yankee schoolma’ams were shipped back to New England; Yankee constitutions were rewritten. Despite talk of a “new South” after 1876, young Southerners (both white and black) continued to learn the old folkways.”

TSA Let 25 Illegal Aliens Attend Flight School Owned by Illegal Alien

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved flight training for 25 illegal aliens at a Boston-area flight school that was owned by yet another illegal alien, according to the Government Accountability Office.

The illegal-alien flight-school attendees included eight who had entered the country illegally and 17 who had overstayed their allowed period of admission into the United States, according to an audit by the GAO.

Six of the illegal aliens were actually able to get pilot’s licenses.

Discovery of the trouble at the flight school began when local police--not federal authorities--pulled over the owner of the school on a traffic violation and were able to determine that he was an illegal alien.

Race, IQ, and Wealth

All IQ data was drawn from Lynn/Vanhanen. The per capita GDP figures are obtained from the World Bank and adjusted for Purchasing Power Parity (PPP 2005$) if available; otherwise being marked with an asterisk. Much of this economic data, especially for non-convertible East Bloc currencies before 1989, is somewhat uncertain and should be used only for rough comparative purposes.

At the end of April, Charles Kenny, a former World Bank economist specializing in international development, published a blistering attack in Foreign Policy entitled “Dumb and Dumber,” with the accusatory subtitle “Are development experts becoming racists?” Kenny charged that a growing number of development economists were turning towards genetic and other intrinsic human traits as a central explanation of national economic progress, often elevating these above the investment and regulatory issues that have long been the focus of international agencies.

Although Kenny suggested that many of his targets had been circumspect in how they raised these highly controversial ideas, he singled out IQ and the Wealth of Nations, published in 2001 by Richard Lynn and Tatu Vanhanen, as a particularly extreme and hateful example of this trend. These authors explicitly argue that IQ scores for different populations are largely fixed and hereditary, and that these—rather than economic or governmental structures—tend to determine the long-term wealth of a given country.

Kenny claimed that such IQ theories were not merely racist and deeply offensive but had also long been debunked by scientific experts—notably the prominent biologist Stephen Jay Gould in his 1980 book The Mismeasure of Man.

As Kenny soon discovered from the responses to his online article, he had seriously erred in quoting the authority of Gould, whose fraud on race and brain-size issues, presumably in service to his self-proclaimed Marxist beliefs, last year received further coverage in the New York Times. Science largely runs on the honor system, and once simple statements of fact—in Gould’s case, the physical volume of human skulls—are found to be false, we cannot trust more complex claims made by the particular scholar.

The Irish Slave Trade – The Forgotten “White” Slaves

They came as slaves; vast human cargo transported on tall British ships bound for the Americas. They were shipped by the hundreds of thousands and included men, women, and even the youngest of children.

Whenever they rebelled or even disobeyed an order, they were punished in the harshest ways. Slave owners would hang their human property by their hands and set their hands or feet on fire as one form of punishment. They were burned alive and had their heads placed on pikes in the marketplace as a warning to other captives.

We don’t really need to go through all of the gory details, do we? We know all too well the atrocities of the African slave trade.

But, are we talking about African slavery? King James II and Charles I also led a continued effort to enslave the Irish. Britain’s famed Oliver Cromwell furthered this practice of dehumanizing one’s next door neighbor.

The Irish slave trade began when James II sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.

Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.

A Great Day for Parental Rights

Yesterday, July 18, was a great day for parental rights, both regarding the Parental Rights Amendment (PRA) and regarding the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Subcommittee Hearing: Differences Among Friends

The Constitution Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee yesterday held a hearing on HJRes110, the Parental Rights Amendment, with 2 witnesses in favor (Alliance Defending Freedom’s Pierro Tozzi and our own Michael Farris) and 1 opposed (NYU Law Professor and ACLU Attorney Martin Guggenheim). There was no friction or animosity among these gentlemen. In fact, all three agree that parents, not the government, should be the first line of defense in protecting and providing for their children. The only point of contention was whether or not an amendment is necessary to safeguard that right.

Here is a snapshot (no pun intended) of the atmosphere of the meeting: prior to the hearing, Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) came down from the gallery to have a staffer take his picture with Michael Farris. Farris and Scott warmly shared a brief conversation as well. Within the scope of the meeting, Rep. Scott might be considered “on the other side,” in that he is among those not yet convinced of the need for the PRA. But he was far, far from hostile or adversarial.

In conclusion, we are very excited about this meeting. We believe that even those not yet on board are “accessible” – we have an opportunity to reach them with the need for this Amendment. Your calls and emails have kept them receptive, and we will continue to answer their questions and concerns to the best of our ability until we have won this vital protection for America’s parents. (In particular, the committee members have about a week to submit questions stemming from the hearing, and we will have opportunity to answer those questions. We hope as a result to see more and more members persuaded to join our efforts in the weeks ahead!)

CRPD: Stopping the Runaway Train

After the hearing, several of our staff stayed in D.C. to visit once again the offices of the members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. We wanted to urge them to consider the threats which the CRPD poses to U.S. sovereignty and to parental rights.

While we were there the word went out among them (and was quickly passed on to us) that the committee vote on CRPD, which had been scheduled for today, has been indefinitely postponed! This is absolutely wonderful news! What last week appeared to be a runaway train has been visibly slowed down.

Does this mean it is time to let up? No. We must remain vocal and vigilant, especially between now and August 3 – the last day of session before the August recess. Because the CRPD can still be brought for a vote before then, we ask that you continue your calls and emails urging your senators to defeat it.

But we have bought some valuable time.

The Senators standing for the rights of parents are working on ways to halt this treaty for this term of Congress. If they can succeed in that, we can all breathe a little easier. (If not, we will all have to remain vigilant throughout the fall and the lame duck session as well.)

If the CRPD vote can be held off until after August 3, those Senators gain an additional month to build that effort.

In all, yesterday was an overwhelmingly good day for parental rights in America. We are humbled and amazed, and we are grateful to each of you who have called, written, donated to ParentalRights.org, or otherwise taken part in making such wonderful news possible!

Please continue to stand with us, and we will keep you posted as things continue to develop.

Sincerely,

Michael Ramey
Direct of Communications & Research

In an hour we could be out of range
Past the border and finally safe
In one hour family would escape
From the grasp of the evil them

They, border guards, are following us
Panting, angry, with rifles ready
Their job is to kill all who'd leave "paradise"
Of the Socialist Commonwealth

Kids, old folks, they have gone ahead
Running, breathless, against the clock
The pursuers are gaining with every step
Wife and I stay to make them stop

Don't laugh, don't cry, we have no choice
Trust in luck, trust in steady aim
Though we know as well as you
Shotguns can't match a-ka-ems

Barking, shouts are getting closer
And in the moments we have left
I look at my wife and long for a hug
But her foxhole is too far away

We need to gain sixty minutes
A pipe dream for the circumstance
But other choices are not for us
So we train two beads on the path

Through the trees we see them approach
Hunting spirit warms their blood
The soldiers and dogs share a purpose
Guarding routes out of paradise

Fifty paces, forty, still closer
They can't see us but dogs can smell
Their nominal prey, we watch them
On the beads between double barrels

While kids still run for the border
We enter Valhalla together
Having won for the fleeing family
Five more minutes of safety

I wish I was elsewhere

I wish I was else-when
Than after the Patriot Act
In a lonely final stand

My wife and son were in bed
When I awoke from slumber
And walked barefoot to the den

I didn't turn on any lights
Because the house was mine
I knew every turn and crevice
Could move like a cat in the dark

I wish I was elsewhere
I wish I was else-when
Than remembering the moments
After the door was rammed

I hear glass break upstairs
And then concussion grenades
Lit up the bedrooms above me
With roar fit to wake the dead

My wife and I had assumed
That intruders were just a gang
For we'd never done anything
To merit this pre-dawn raid

My wife and son tried to fight
The ninjas behind bright lights
But they were alone and stunned
I heard rattle of MP-fives

I wish I was elsewhere
I wish I was else-when
And not in my ruined home
With my family freshly dead

I thought to my self: "I am dreaming"
This gang just couldn't be Feds
But they acted just as one would expect
Shooting women and children dead

They hadn't found me yet
As I wasn't asleep in bed
My deer rifle was close by
What I wanted to say, it said

I retreated and so did they
Watching me from the outside
From the basement I still could tell
That they set my house on fire

In the choking smoke, I could just wait
Barefoot on cement basement floor
I wanted to take just one more of them
On my journey to the Beyond

I wish I was elsewhere
I wish I was else-when
Instead of this cold basement
At bay like a cornered rat

One more coal-scuttle helmet
Came up above barricade
And though my hands were shaky
I connected the one shot I made

The heat got beyond enduring
But the smoke, it got me first
And the house became a pyre
For me and two other corpses

The newspapers ran the story
That a three-person terrorist cell
Were taken down in pre-dawn hours
And that two brave policemen fell

I wish I was elsewhere
I wish I was else-when
Perhaps in the Sherwood Forest
With like-minded armed men

That's not a line in the sand. That's a range marker!

Location Where Col. Travis Drew a Line in the Sand

Oleg Volk

A line in the sand.

The enemy host approached
Beheld the line in the sand
Walked along it without crossing
Deciding what to do next

Dug into chilly foxholes
Defenders awaited onslaught
Their sights set to the distance
At which the enemy paused

As bugles signaled advance
A volley ripped into the ranks
And while the bodies were falling
Lead storm tore at them once again

Checked by effective fire
Invaders retreated in shame
Learning that line in the sand
Was also marker for range

Remember that, would-be tyrants
To boundaries pay some respect
For free men still have their rifles
And wages of evil is death
