A reader sends this link to the Greensboro, NC paper, with the following gem from Congressman Brad Miller:

***
…U.S. Rep. Brad Miller , D- 13th District, counters those fears assume “a tyrannical government.” He said the idea that armed citizens serve as an effective check on a modern military is “kind of a fantasy.”

“Given the power of the military now, the weaponry available to the military and the powers of the government, the idea that armed citizens are an important check on government just seems unrealistic,” Miller said. “And it leads to the kind of carnage that we saw in Aurora.”

“Jesse Can’t Shag”

I just heard the complete shag record on 107.9 for the first time and thought it hilarious.:)

Good job, Jesse. We need more like you.

This fall the Collection received two cartons of miscellaneous printed materials–tourist brochures, political flyers, and the like. In among the brochures was a 45 rpm record entitled “Jesse Can’t Shag.” It was made for the 1984 Helms-Hunt U.S. Senate race. Given the passions that Senator Helms evoked, it’s a surprisingly gentle song. The gist of the song is that the vocalist is leaning toward Hunt because “Jimmy” likes beach music. On the other hand, Jesse “has two right feet” and has never learned to shag. The singer thinks it’s time for Jesse to “shag or get off the floor.”

The music is country. It’s a polished mix, with a honky-tonk piano, a horn section, and backup singers. Click HERE for an excerpt.

Obama versus Mrs. Goose

Message from the Stock Market

Mike Scruggs

Having been a “stock broker” for over 20 years with a major national financial firm, I am painfully aware of how difficult it is to forecast the economy and stock prices. I personally found it futile to give much weight to short-term stock market forecasts against longer-term financial objectives. Most people who try to “time” the market are less successful in the long run than people who concentrate on picking solid growth opportunities at reasonable prices.

When I first went to work for E. F. Hutton in 1984, picking good investments was less complicated. More recently, the prevalence of trading “derivative” securities and the mindless programmed trading of millions of stock shares without regard to specific equity prospects or valuation can hand you your head on a platter in the short-run. Sticking with a good stock for the long run is now more dangerous. In addition, the emphasis on immediate earnings results has made the weeks before a company’s quarterly report a time of fearful anticipation. Any minor short-term shortfall or nuance of future uncertainty can be a personal disaster for stockholders—a good reason for not having all your eggs in one basket. American business would be much better off, if it could concentrate on long-term issues rather than the next quarterly report.

I never worked for Merrill Lynch, but I have been “bullish on America” in the past because, despite the bumbling of politicians, our strong free enterprise system and market economy drive good returns on the stock market in the long run. So far, American politicians have not been able to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. However, at times they have been able to frighten or discourage the goose into laying fewer and smaller eggs, and this has made America poorer. Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society War on Poverty was supposed to cost $60 billion per year, but the actual cost adjusted to 1966 dollars is running over $600 billion per year. It sounded to many like a sweet thing to do for the poor, but it has only flushed several trillion dollars down the toilet and has reaped no favorable results. It has resulted in a declining American work ethic, millions of fatherless homes and children, and millions of illegal immigrants exploiting the benefits of free babies and healthcare—but the costs of these are so high that no one can estimate them.

Moreover, the politicians have business so regulated that no one can estimate the costs. It has been good for many big businesses, however, because it has made it hard on smaller competitors and new business start-ups. I am of the philosophy that we should treat the golden goose with more love and respect. It is Mrs. Goose, you see, and not the likes of Barack Obama, who can produce the golden eggs that result in millions of good jobs. Indeed, President Obama appears to have a strong grudge against Mrs. Goose and insists that she lay green eggs.

On Friday, July 27, the U.S. stock markets gave us a strong clue regarding what is necessary to improve the economy. Economic reports were generally dismal. The latest Bureau of Labor Statistics reports indicate that the economic “recovery” is slowing to less than two percent annual growth with little prospect of creating real jobs. The Consumer Confidence Index has fallen to its lowest level this year. Only 25 percent of those polled believe the economy is getting better. If you look deeper into the usual government statistics on employment and inflation, things are much worse than commonly reported by popular media. The European economies are still struggling from the results of many years of government overspending and high taxes. Several are on the verge of fiscal collapse. Yet on Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Index was up 187.73 or 1.46 percent to 13,075.66, and the Nasdaq Index was up 64.84 or 2.24 percent to 2958.14. Why are the markets up when the economic news is so discouraging?

I believe it is because the Rasmussen poll just released indicates that Mitt Romney has moved up in their daily polls by about 4 percent and now has a 4 percent lead over President Obama. The vast majority of sophisticated investors—indeed, anyone with much economic, business, or common sense—knows that Barack Obama is not a friend to Mrs. Goose. He does not appear to know anything but Marxist demagoguery about economics, business, and the every day struggles of business owners and working families. Barack Obama is not your grandfather’s Democrat. His cultural and economic Marxism is difficult to distinguish from the European Union socialist parties responsible for Europe’s troubles. No intelligent and knowledgeable voter outside of a madhouse or the core constituencies of the Democrat party believe that Barack Obama is good for the economy, jobs, or the stock market. The market is rising on the hope that the reign of Obama will be over next January. Public confidence is firming that Mitt Romney is much better qualified in intellectual competence, hands-on economic and business knowledge, and leadership to halt America’s social and economic decline and put her on the road to prosperity and global leadership again.

However, the election is three months away, and popular opinion is not necessarily well-informed opinion. If Romney is elected, we will still have many of our current stock market problems, especially those related to Europe, but I am confident that the long-term trend will be up as free markets and free enterprise are unshackled, and Mrs. Goose increases the size and frequency of her golden eggs. If Obama is re-elected, Mrs. Goose may be forced to take early retirement, and investor confidence is going to have its back broken.

Citizen calls out Tennessee governor’s sharia appointment

Via Cousin Bill

Here’s one way citizens can get active. via Letter: Shariah threat is real » The Commercial Appeal.

The new appointee to Gov. Bill Haslam’s Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development is Samar Ali, a devout Muslim. Her credentials reach deeply into Islamic Shariah law, most troubling of which is her former position in the Hogan Lovells international law firm, which has had in its employ such “eminent Shariah scholars” as the Muslim Brotherhood’s Sheikh al-Qaradawi, an extremist radical Muslim.

For what purpose are Shariah finance laws needed within Tennessee or American government? Shariah is exclusionary, radical and contrary to American law and is ethnically driven. Let Muslims comply with our laws and our Constitution, not the other way around. They are in America.

Additionally, is Ali to impose Shariah law on the state departments of Children’s Services or Safety and Homeland Security, for which the governor has given her the status of “nongovernmental partner”? The good governor has alienated his loyal constituents who put him in office.

I am no longer one of those constituents.

Bravo. Put elected officials on notice. Call them out in a professional, informed, fact-based manner. Put them on notice. Particularly when they double down on sharia as Haslam has:

Scalia: Hand-held rocket launchers may be permissible under Second Amendment

The rest of the piece is not encouraging though.

Scalia: ‘Limitations’ could be imposed on guns in the future

On this weekend’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday,” host Chris Wallace asked Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia to react to the possibility that gun laws might change in the wake of the shooting tragedy in Aurora, Colorado earlier this month.

Wallace wanted to know how much power state governments and legislatures had to regulate firearms, including semiautomatic weapons.

“What the opinion in [District of Columbia v. Heller] said is that it will have to be decided in future cases what limitations upon the right to keep and bear arms are permissible,” Scalia said. “Some undoubtedly are because there were some that were acknowledged at the time [of the writing of the Constitution] … so, yes, there are some limitations that can be imposed. What they are will depend on what the society understood were reasonable limitations at the time.”

When Wallace asked whether the Second Amendment permitted even weapons that could fire hundreds of rounds in a minute, Scalia paused.

Idaho Libertarian Billboard Compares Obama to Aurora Shooter

Commence pearl-clutching.

An electronic board on Franklin Road in Caldwell juxtaposes photos of James Holmes, accused of killing 12 in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last week, with President Obama. About Holmes, it says: “Kills 12 in a movie theater with assault rifle, everyone freaks out.” About Obama: “Kills thousands with foreign policy, wins Nobel Peace Prize.”

What’s the point? Obama broke his promise to bring the troops home and many young Americans have died, said Maurice Clements, who is helping keep alive the provocative libertarian tradition of the late Ralph Smeed, whose billboard (now electronic) is a Caldwell landmark. “We’re all outraged over that killing in Aurora, Colo., but we’re not outraged over the boys killed in Afghanistan,” Clements said of public sentiment.

Press: Praise the Lord -- and stockpile the ammunition

Roundabout via Don

I thought I had heard every idiotic statement on gun control before, but was obviously wrong.
I believe in the Second Amendment. And, as a Scalia originalist, I believe we should take it literally. Let's bring back, in every state, as the Constitution so clearly calls for, a "well-regulated militia." Let's require its gun-toting members to carry and clean their own single-shot muskets, to wear the militia uniform, and to go out and drill once a month with fellow minutemen. But let all other guns be banned..............There is no need for anyone, outside the military, to own an assault weapon. There is no need for anyone, outside of law enforcement, to have a handgun. If we really value life, it's time to do something about gun control. If not now, when? Hopefully, before the next Aurora.

German World War II sub discovered off Nantucket

German WWII submarine found near Nantucket
German crewmen abandon the German submarine U-550 in April 1944 after being depth-charged by the American destroyer Joyce. Photo Credit:AP

In April 1944, a German submarine prowling the waters off Nantucket torpedoed an American tanker caught straggling behind its convoy. The U-boat took cover beneath the sinking ship to avoid detection, but the flagship USS Joyce closed in and delivered a punishing depth charge attack that forced the damaged vessel to the surface.

Under fierce attack, U-550 sank stern first. There it lay, its final resting place an enduring mystery for nearly 70 years.

But earlier this week, after years of research and days of painstaking searches of the ocean floor, a crew discovered the elusive craft about 70 miles south of Nantucket. Crew members said the submarine was among the last undiscovered German warships along the eastern seaboard, where it once attacked merchant ships and forced blackouts in coastal cities.

“They’ve looked for it for over 20 years,” said Joe Mazraani, a shipwreck diver from New Jersey. “It’s another World War II mystery solved.”

The seven-person crew announced the finding Friday, and said they would be returning to document the wreck site.

Over two voyages, the seven-man crew searched 100 square miles of ocean, using sonar to survey the ocean depths. Traveling at five knots, the ship scanned the vast expanse for signs of the sunken vessel, a tedious process crew members likened to “mowing the lawn.”

Just when it looked as if the search would end in vain, the downed ship came into view. A second scan confirmed the finding, setting off a wild celebration at sea.

“It was jubilation,” Mazraani said. “We were jumping up and down, giving each other high-fives. It was awesome.”

Mazraani dove down to confirm the discovery with pictures. Sonar images provided by the crew show the 250-foot submarine sitting upright and tilted to the starboard side. The images and the general location match that of the sunken German ship.

GRNC Action Alert: Morrisville City Council meets soon to decide your fate as gun owners

Should be the heart of bleeding heart liberals.

The town of Morrisville is the latest to hop on the bandwagon to restrict your rights under the laws passed in December of 2011. The Town Council will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, July 31st at 6:30pm at 100 Town Hall Drive to hear feedback from the community before it moves to restrict where gun owners can carry within the town’s parks and recreational areas.

As you well know, State Law passed in December of last year allowed for Concealed Handgun Permit holders to carry concealed guns in state and local parks and recreational areas. A number of municipalities across the state have sought to circumvent this law and enact their own restrictions to prevent law-abiding citizens the means to protect themselves. The “recreational facilities” in which municipalities may still ban guns include only athletic fields, swimming pools, playgrounds and athletic facilities, not areas of passive recreation such as greenways and other areas included in the proposals that this Town Council is trying to illegally pass. The Town of Morrisville appears to be the latest in the line of communities that are attempting to ignore your rights under state law.

It is vitally important that you contact the Mayor of Morrisville, as well as members of the Town Council prior to the public hearing on Tuesday, as well as taking the time to appear and voice your opinion at the hearing. Using the contact information provided here, make sure that the town of Morrisville is not allowed to restrict your right of protection!

DELIVER THIS MESSAGE

Suggested Subject: "Do not deny my rights in parks"

Dear Mayor Holcombe and Council Members:

As a North Carolina gun owner and Concealed handgun Permit holder, I am deeply disappointed that the Town of Morrisville is considering actions to restrict my ability to defend myself and the lives of my family within town parks and recreational areas.

As you well know, the only people that will be affected by such actions would be law-abiding gun owners, and not the presumptive criminals who you intend to restrict. Criminals, by definition, do not follow laws and will be in no way affected by your proposed restrictions. Law-abiding citizens, however, will be greatly affected and would have to make the choice of leaving themselves open to attack while visiting Morrisville’s parks, or simply go elsewhere.

I ask that you reconsider restricting my right to carry as protected under state law passed last December. The law was passed to insure that law-abiding citizens had the ability to protect themselves if ever the case should arise. Your intentional actions designed to circumvent these new laws are greatly disturbing, to say the least. The “recreational facilities” in which municipalities may still ban guns include only athletic fields, swimming pools, playgrounds and athletic facilities, not areas of passive recreation such as
greenways and other areas included in the proposals that this Town Council is trying to illegally pass.

I expect you to do everything in your power to defeat this attempt to deny lawful gun owners their ability to defend themselves. I will be watching your actions carefully through updates from Grass Roots North Carolina.

Sincerely,

From the Pender Roundtable on the meeting in August; however this is incorrect as General Stand Watie was the last to surrender on June 23, 1865

General Stand Watie

Last Confederate general to surrender

This may be of interest since we will be hearing about the war in the west this month

The Confederate general in the American Civil War, Edmund Kirby Smith, was the son of Joseph Lee Smith (1776-1846), an American lawyer and soldier, who served with credit in the War of 1812 and rose to the rank of colonel U.S.A. His elder brother, Ephraim Kirby Smith (1807-1847), also a soldier, fell at Molino del Rey; and Joseph Lee Kirby Smith, Ephraim's son, who took the Federal side in the Civil War, was mortally wounded at the battle of Corinth, having at the age of twenty-six attained the rank of brevet-colonel U.S.A. Edmund Kirby Smith was born at St. Augustine, Fla., on the 16th of May 1824, and graduated at West Point in 1845, being assigned to the infantry. In the Mexican War he was breveted first lieutenant, and captain for gallantry at Vera Cruz and Cerro Gordo and at Contreras-Churubusco. He was assistant professor of mathematics at West Point from 1849 to 1852 and was later engaged in Indian warfare on the Texas frontier. In 1861 he attained the rank of major. When Florida seceded he resigned his army commission and entered the Confederate service as a lieutenant-colonel.

He was made a brigadier-general on the 17th of June 1861, and was wounded at the battle of Bull Run. In command of the Confederate forces in the Cumberland Gap region Kirby Smith took part in General Bragg's invasion of Kentucky in the autumn of 1862, and inflicted upon the Federal forces a severe defeat at Richmond, KY, on the 30th of August; and was present at the battles of Perryville and Murfreesboro (Stone River.) From February 1863 to the fall of the Confederacy he was in command of the trans-Mississippi department, and was successful in making this section of the Confederacy (isolated from the rest by the fall of Vicksburg) self-supporting. He instituted a regular system of blockade running, and met and defeated the Red River expedition under General Nathaniel P. Banks in 1864. Kirby Smith and his troops surrendered on the 26th of May 1865, being the last armed forces of the Confederate States to do so.

After the war, he was from 1866 to 1868 president of the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph company, from 1868 to 1876 president of the Western Military Academy, from 1870 to 1875 chancellor of the university of Nashville, and from 1875 to his death professor of mathematics at the university of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. He died at Sewanee on the 28th of March 1893.
