New Webpage Added:  “The Economic Causes of the War”

The excellent explanation of the economic causes of the War Between the States by Dr. Donald W. Miller, Jr. is added in its entirety.  It was published in September 2001. Please pass this website along to family, friends and acquaintances to help them better understand American history, the reasons for the 1861-1865 conflict, and the unsurpassed valor of North Carolinians who fought for their independence.  Read an excerpt below:

“Union means so many millions a year lost to the South; secession means the loss of the same millions to the North.  The love of money is the root of this, as of many evils.  The quarrel between the North and the South is, as it stands, solely a fiscal quarrel.”  Charles Dickens

In the schoolbook account of the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln rose to the presidency and took the steps needed to end slavery.  He led the country in a great Civil War against the slaveholding States that seceded, restored these states to the Union, and ended slavery. Accordingly, historians rate Abraham Lincoln as one of our greatest presidents.

People in the South, like my great-great-grandfather Louis Thomas Hicks, had a different view of the war. Louis Hicks fought in the Battle of Gettysburg in the Army of Northern Virginia, commanding the 20th North Carolina Regiment (in Iverson's Brigade of Rodes Division in Ewell's Second Corps).

He led his regiment into action on the first day of the battle and was forced to surrender after losing eighty percent of his men (238 out of 300) in two-and-a-half hours of fighting. In his personal account of the battle, he wrote, "[As a prisoner] I lied awake, thinking of my comrades and the great cause for which we were willing to shed our last drop of blood."

His daughter, Mary Lyde Williams, echoed similar sentiments in her Presentation Address given at the Unveiling of the North Carolina Memorial on the Battlefield of Gettysburg on July 3, 1929.  She began her address with the words, "They wrote a constitution in which each State should be free."

Four children, including her granddaughter, my mother, who was then 10 years old, removed the veil that covered the statue.

Today’s Standard View of the War

Today American children are taught in the nation's schools, both in the North and South, that it was wrong for people to support the Confederacy and to fight and die for it.

Well-intentioned, "right thinking" people equate anyone today who thinks that the South did the right thing by seceding from the Union as secretly approving of slavery. Indeed, such thinking has now reached the point where groups from both sides of the political spectrum, notably the NAACP and Southern Poverty Law Center on the left and the Cato Institute on the right, want to have the Confederate Battle Flag eradicated from public spaces. These people argue that the Confederate flag is offensive to African-Americans because it commemorates slavery.

The war did enable Lincoln to "save" the Union, but only in a geographic sense. The country ceased being a Union, as it was originally conceived, of separate and sovereign States. Instead,
America became a "nation" with a powerful federal government. Although the war freed four million slaves into poverty, it did not bring about a new birth of freedom, as Lincoln and historians such as James McPherson and Henry Jaffa say.  For the nation as a whole the war did just the opposite: It initiated a process of centralization of government that has substantially restricted liberty and freedom in America, as historians Charles Adams and Jeffrey Rogers Hummel have argued

– Adams in his book, When in the Course of Human Events: Arguing the Case for Southern Secession (published in 2000); and Hummel in his book, Emancipating Slaves, Enslaving Free Men (1996).

Why Ron Paul is > Rand Paul (and the Daily Beast is a Rag)

So I take it Rand Paul opposes arming the Syrian opposition, but supports US air strikes against ISIS. Fortunately, his libertarian fans see through his blatant difference splitting and are not happy about it. The linked article describes Rand’s weaseling but otherwise is a typical Daily Beast snarkfest.
On Thursday afternoon, Paul took the Senate floor to deliver an impassioned speech outlining his opposition to arming Syrian rebels as the U.S. fights ISIS. That part of Paul’s foreign-policy platform, his liberty-loving fans have no issue with. It is the other part—where Paul is openly supporting airstrikes in Syria and Iraq—that is causing some of them, at least those dedicated enough to the movement to attend LPAC, to stare at him squinty-eyed.
“Squinty-eyed?” Get it? That’s the author’s way of communicating disdain. Where did she go to journalism school, Patsy’s Playland?

Alleged Pedophile’s Sister Says “It Was Awesome” That 11 Year-Old Shot Her Murderous Brother

Angry bully Shannon Watts doesn't want women to defend themselves with firearms, or for children to know how to shoot.
Angry bully Shannon Watts of Moms Demand Action doesn’t want women to defend themselves with firearms, or for children to know how to shoot.

An alleged pedophile’s sister says that “it was awesome” when an 11-year-old girl shot her brother. The criminal violated a protective order against him, and attacked the girl’s mother with a knife.

Unfortunately for Moms Demand Action and other gun control cultists that like to have dead victims to exploit, the woman in this instance had a gun in her home, and a child that knew how to use it.
An Oklahoma City man is hospitalized after being shot multiple times by the 11-year-old girl.

A Look Inside The Secret Deal With Saudi Arabia That Unleashed The Syrian Bombing

For those to whom the recent US campaign against Syria seems a deja vu of last summer's "near-war" attempt to ouster its president Bashar al-Assad, which was stopped in the last minute due to some very forceful Russian intervention and the near breakout of war in the Mediterranean between US and Russian navies, it is because they are.

And as a reminder, just like last year, the biggest wildcard in this, and that, direct intervention into sovereign Syrian territory, or as some would call it invasion or even war, was not the US but Saudi Arabia - recall from August of 2013 - "Meet Saudi Arabia's Bandar bin Sultan: The Puppetmaster Behind The Syrian War." Bin Sultan was officially let go shortly after the 2013 campaign to replace Syria's leadership with a more "amenable" regime failed if not unofficially (see below), but Saudi ambitions over Syria remained

Excessive Force? John Crawford Shooting At Beavercreek Walmart [VIDEO]

There are various versions of the John Crawford III Shooting by Beavercreek, Ohio Police that have been released today after a grand jury decided to not indict the officers who shot Mr. Crawford after what appears to have been an exaggerated/embellished 911 call.

The video above is a time-compressed version showing an external camera view mounted over a pair of doors to the left, synched with another camera on the right showing the aisle and John Crawford, who is on the phone, apparently oblivious to everyone.

The Craziness Of A ConCon

Via Iver

Dated

I keep getting asked about this and people keep advocating it, so let's talk about it.

The issue is a Constitutional Convention, with the expressed intent being to return the United States to its Constitutional Roots.

Sounds like a good idea, yes?

Well, it quite arguably is, if you'd like to see the government return to its Constitutional boundaries.
The problem is that this "remedy" isn't a remedy and if it comes to pass what you want won't happen.
I know this for a fact and, if you think about it, so do you.

I know what you're going to say: How can you be so sure?

It's simple: There is nothing wrong with the Constitution as it sits now.  The problem is that it's not followed.

Let's just take one example: The Fourth Amendment

It reads:

Holder to Resign

Good riddance to bad rubbish and we can only pray his replacement isn't worst.

Eric Holder, who served as the public face of the Obama administration's legal fight against terrorism and pushed to make the criminal justice system more even-handed, is resigning after six years on the job. He is the nation's first black attorney general.

The White House said Thursday that President Barack Obama planned to announce Holder's departure later Thursday. The White House said Holder plans to remain at the Justice Department until his successor is in place.
