The Unemancipated Country: Eugene Genovese’s Discovery of the Old South

 genovese

On 26 September 2012, Eugene Dominic Genovese, one of the most influential and controversial historians of his generation, passed away at age eighty-two after a lengthy struggle with heart disease. His principal writings focused on the history of slavery and the Old South. Roll, Jordan, Roll: The World the Slaves Made (1974) stands as a masterpiece, one of the great works of nonfiction published in the twentieth century. Scholars have had trouble coming to grips with Genovese and his thinking when he was alive; they will have trouble coming to grips with him and his thinking after his death

Gene, as his friends called him, destroyed most of his personal papers. The thought of someone writing his biography, he once told me, horrified him. Stubborn, but not stuck in dogma, he was also a moving target. He began his academic career as a Marxist atheist; he ended it as an observant Catholic. Along the way, two ideas remained central to his scholarship: paternalism as the animating feature in the world that masters and slaves made together in the Old South and the necessity of a moral social authority to thwart the inexorable rise of nihilism born of radical individualism.

“This Is America” – Watch As Secret Service Agent Slams Turkish President’s Body Guard Goons For Trying To Silence Protesters

Via comment by Anonymous on "John Kerry’s New Terror Treason: Befriending Commu...":

It may be completely legal for Turkish President Recep Erdogan’s minions to silence the voices of journalists, bloggers and other outspoken critics when in Turkey.

But when you’re in America, Jack, your autocratic tendencies and dictatorial inclinations are fair game for protesters, the media and our citizenry.

That’s the message the Turkish President’s body guards got from a Secret Service agent on President Obama’s security detail in Washington after Erdogan’s goons started ripping anti-Erdogan flyers out of peoples’ hands, physically assaulting them and throwing them the middle finger.

Top 20 Modern Doublespeak Terms To Be Aware Of

Via Billy

doublespeak_by_thebase9wario-d5qpzid.jpg

Doublespeak is a language that is alive and well in our world today. Doublespeak can refer to terms that are euphemisms (mild expressions designed to hide harsher or more direct ones), deliberately ambiguous (expressions designed to hide the truth) or actual inversions (outright lies which state the opposite of the truth). Although he never used the term doublespeak in his book 1984, many associate doublespeak with George Orwell. After all, it was Orwell who famously wrote that the motto of the totalitarian ruling party in 1984 was “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength” – an example of an inversion. Orwell did however use the term newspeak to refer to a new kind of language which drastically reduced the scope of available words and terms, so as to concurrently reduce the scope of possible free thought among the ruled population.

Tu Sat (War Suicide) in South Viet Nam

Re-post 2012
Капитан Фу
Captain Pham Van Phu. Probably taken the same year of his capture at Dien Bien Phu. His insignia is correct and he would have been 27.  He vowed never to be captured by the Communists again.
 Генерал майор Фам Ван Фу
General Pham Van Phu early April 1975.  He committed suicide April 30, 1975.

To die for one’s country is not only an act of bravery, it is THE act of bravery. For soldiers, it is just an extension of their military career, a part of their duty. As leaders have asked their soldiers to sacrifice themselves for the good of the society, it is only right for leaders to go through the same motion. They should practice what they have preached.

As war is seen as a noble act, tu sat serves as redemption in case of defeat. It is also a way to tell the enemy: “You might have won the battle/war but you don’t deserve to win because you don’t have the chinh nghia (just cause).” And it is not only just cause: it is the moral belief that the cause they are fighting for deserves their total sacrifice.

Although tu sat or tuan tiet means war suicide, there is no good corresponding word in English because the act itself is not practiced in the Christian West. Secondly, the word suicide does not convey the moral and courageous implication of the act. It is a closer equivalent of hara kiri or seppuku (1). Although hara kiri is practically a disembowelment, its practice varies from person to person. If the blade is thrust deeply enough, it could cause an immediate death through arterial bleeding. If inserted superficially, the still-alive victim would be beheaded by the assistant. While tu sat and hara kiri are technically different, the end-result is the same: the death of the person through his own hand or the hands of an assistant.

Vietnam is one of the rare few countries in the world where leaders killed themselves when they lost a war. We will review these cases of tu sat during the pre- and anti-colonial wars and the anti-communist war.

Carolina I Remember You: #30 of the 100 Top North Carolina songs

 art6297

The 100 North Carolina songs Everyone loves lists. The Billboard charts, Forbes magazine and direct marketing firms exist because of that fact. Well, maybe not all lists are great, but here’s one that won’t end up filling your mailbox with ads for the Publisher’s Clearing House or male enhancement:

the 100 Greatest North Carolina Songs. There’s a little bit of methodology due. Many are great songs by artists from North Carolina, while others are great songs about North Carolina. Others are a little bit of both, though these are treated with a slightly different importance, depending on who ranked them. There were two of us doing the rankings. Jordan Green gave more weight to just how “kick-ass” he found the songs to be, while I leant more gravity to the songs’ relevance to the subject. We each created our own top 100, the average values of which then factored into the final result.

Concerns About Paul Ryan Emerging Out of Ted Cruz-Created Contested Convention as Nominee Dominate Wisconsin

Via Billy

http://redstateeclectic.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83452719d69e201774421cf9e970d-pi

In recent weeks, there has been increasing discussion about the possibility that House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) could emerge out of a brokered convention as the Republican nominee if the donor class is successful in denying Donald Trump the requisite 1,237 delegates.

Just as Paul Ryan’s ascension to House Speaker represented a total repudiation of the GOP electorate by GOP lawmakers, Ryan’s selection as the Party’s nominee would similarly represent the donor class’s silencing of voters and voters’ views on immigration, trade, and foreign policy that have transformed the country and its role in the world.

Regardless, many in the “#NeverTrump” movement have indicated that they would support Ryan against the wishes of the Republican electorate that has voted for Trump.

Actor SCOTT BAIO Speaks Out on his Support for Donald Trump

Via Billy

Actor Scott Baio, a former Republican who describes himself today as an independent conservative, spoke with Maria Bartiromo today on his support for Donald Trump for President.

Baio joined Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures to talk about his support for Donald J. Trump for president.
Scott Baio: The Republican Party, which I try not to associate myself with anymore because I think they’re very untrustworthy on almost every issue, they always seem to have this mentality that they don’t want to get down in the dirt. They want to be above the fray and they want to be perceived as nice and they get killed.
Maria Bartiromo: And then nothing gets done.
Scott Baio: And they lose elections because they don’t want to fight. When you fight, you fight to win. And they don’t ever want to fight. And I can’t understand it.

Trump : New Trade Deals Will Eliminate ($19 Trillion) US Debt in 8 years

Trump RNC

The Republican presidential front-runner said in a wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post that he’d be able to get rid of the more than $19 trillion debt “over a period of eight years.”

Eliminating that amount of debt in eight years is highly improbable, according to most economists, The Washington Post reported. It could require using $2 trillion a year from the annual $4 trillion budget to pay off holders of the debt.

THE STEAL IS IN—

Maria Bartiromo spoke with Sean Spicer the chief strategist on the Republican National Committee on Sunday Morning Futures this morning.

Bartiromo reported that over 100 Republican delegates are reported to break from Donald Trump on a second ballot despite the fact that he won the most states.

Out of the 168 Republican National Committee members only one supports Donald Trump.
Maria Bartiromo: In one of the starkest examples of lack of support out of the 168 Republican National Committee members, each of whom doubles as a convention delegate, only one publicly supports Trump.
