The Highwayman

Repost 2010/11

(My favorite poem. It scared my daughter Bonnie when I read it. Both this and The Charge Of The Light Brigade. :) BT)

The wind was a torrent of darkness
among the ghastly trees
The moon was a ghostly galleon
tossed upon the cloudy seas
The road was a ribbon of moonlight
over the purple moor
When the highwayman came riding,
riding,riding
The highwayman came riding
up to the old inn door.

He´d a french cocked hat at his forehead
a bunch of lace at his chin
A coat of claret velvet
and breeches of brown doe-skin
They fitted with nary a wrinkle
his boots were up to the thigh
and he rode with a jeweled twinkle
his pistol butts a-twinkle
his rapier hilt a-twinkle
under the jeweled sky.

And over cobbles he clattered
and clashed in the dark inn-yard
and he tapped with his whip on the shutters
but all was locked and barred
He whistled a tune to the window
and who should be waiting there
but the landlord´s black-eyed daughter
Bess,the landlord´s daughter
plaiting a dark red love knot
into her long black hair.

"One kiss my bonny sweetheart,
I´m after a prize tonight
but I should be back with the yellow gold
before the morning light
Yet if they press me sharply
and harry me through the day
Then look for me by the moonlight
watch for me by the moonlight
I´ll come to thee by the moonlight
though hell should bar the way."

He rose up right in the stirrups
he scarce could reach her hand
but she loosened her hair in the casement
his face burned like a brand
As a black cascade of purfume
came tumbling over his breast
and he kissed it´s waves in the moonlight
oh,sweet waves in the moonlight
He tugged at his rein in the moonlight
and galloped away to the west.

He did not come at the dawning
He did not come at noon
And out of the tawny sunset
before the rise of the moon
When the road was a gypsy´s ribbon
looping the purple moor
A redcoat troop came marching
marching,marching
King George´s men came marching
up to the old inn door.

They said no word to the landlord
they drank his ale instead
but they gagged his daughter and bound her
to the foot of her narrow bed
Two of them knelt at the casement
with muskets at their side
There was death at every window
hell at one dark window
for Bess could see through the casement
the road that he would ride.

They had tied her up to attention
with many a sniggering jest
They had bound a musket beside her
with the barrel beneath her breast
"Now keep good watch"and they kissed her
she heard the dead man say
"Look for me by the moonlight
Watch for me by the moonlight
I´ll come to thee by the moonlight
though hell should bar the way."

She twisted her hands behind her
but all the knots held good!
But she writhed her hands ´til her fingers
were wet with sweat or blood
They stretched and strained in the darkness
and the hours crawled by like years
till now on the stroke of midnight
cold on the stroke of midnight
the tip of her finger touched it
the trigger at least was hers.

Tot-a-lot,tot-a-lot had they heard it?
The horse´s hooves rang clear
Tot-a-lot,tot-a-lot in the distance
were they deaf they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight
over the brow of the hill
The highwayman came riding,
riding,riding
The redcoats looked to their priming
she stood up straight and still.

Tot-a-lot in the frosty silence
Tot-a-lot in the echoing night
Nearer he came and nearer
her face was like a light
Her eyes grew wide for a moment
she drew a last deep breath
Then her finger moved in the moonlight
her musket shattered the moonlight
shattered her breast in the moonlight
and warned him with her death.

He turned,he spurred to the west
He did not know she stood
bowed with her head o´er musket
drenched with her own red blood
Not till the dawn he heard it
his face grew grey to hear
How Bess the landlord´s daughter
the landlord´s black-eyed daughter
had watched for her love in the moonlight
and died in the darkness there.

And back he spurred like a madman
shrieking a curse to the sky!
With the white road smoking behind him
and his rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon
wine-red was his velvet coat
When they shot him down in the highway
down like a dog on the highway
and he lay in his blood in the highway
with a bunch of lace at his throat.

Still on a winter´s night they say
when the wind is in the trees
When the moon is a ghostly galleon
tossed upon the cloudy seas
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight
over the purple moor
a highwayman comes riding,
riding,riding
a highwayman comes riding
up to the old inn door.

The Ocean has its silent caves,
Deep, quiet, and alone;
Though there be fury on the waves,
Beneath them there is none.

The awful spirits of the deep
Hold their communion there;
And there are those for whom we weep,
The young, the bright, the fair.

Calmly the wearied seamen rest
Beneath their own blue sea.
The ocean solitudes are blest,
For there is purity.

The earth has guilt, the earth has care,
Unquiet are its graves;
But peaceful sleep is ever there,
Beneath the dark blue waves.

Economic Prelude to Another World War

Image result for The New Deal and the International Monetary System, Murray N. Rothbard

During the mid and late 1930’s, German diplomats in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay reported home that the US was “exerting very strong pressure against Germany commercially” in order to keep the market for themselves. The Times of London reported well after war began that “One of the fundamental causes of this war has been the unrelaxing efforts of Germany since 1918 to secure enough foreign markets to straighten her finances at the very same time when all her competitors were forced by their own debts to adopt exactly the same course,. Continuous friction was inevitable.”
Bernhard Thuersam, www.Circa1865.com   The Great American Political Divide

Economic Prelude to Another World War

“German economic nationalism in the 1930’s was, first of all, conditioned on the horrifying experience that Germany had had with runaway inflation and currency depreciation during the early 1920’s, culminating in the monetary collapse of 1923.

In this economic climate, [German economic minister] Dr. [Hjalmar] Schacht was particularly successful in making bilateral trade agreements with individual countries, agreements which amounted to direct “barter” arrangements that angered the United States and other Western countries in totally bypassing gold and other international banking or financial arrangements.

Actually, there was nothing either diabolic or unilaterally exploitive about the barter deals. Part of the essence of barter arrangements has been neglected by historians – the deliberate overvaluation of the exchange rates of both currencies involved in the deals. May not Western anger at successful German competition through bilateral agreements, and Western desire to liquidate such competition, have been an important factor in the Western drive for war against Germany?

Lloyd Gardner has demonstrated the early hostility of the United States toward German economic controls and barter arrangements, its attempts to pressure Germany to shift to a multi-lateral. “Open Door” system for American products, and the repeated rebuffs to German proposals for bilateral exchanges between the two countries.

As early as June 26, 1933, the influential American Consul-General at Berlin, George Messersmith, was warning that such continued policies would make “Germany a danger to world peace for years to come.”

In pursuing this aggressive policy, President Roosevelt overrode AAA [Agricultural Adjustment Administration] chief George Peek, who favored accepting bilateral deals with Germany and, perhaps not coincidentally, was to be an ardent “isolationist” in the late 1930’s.

Instead, Roosevelt followed the policy of the leading interventionist and spokesman for the “Open Door” to American products, Secretary of State Cordell Hull, as well as his assistant Secretary Francis B. Sayre, son-in-law of Woodrow Wilson.

By 1935, American officials were calling Germany an “aggressor” because of its successful bilateral trade competition, and Japan was similarly castigated for much the same reasons. By late 1938, J. Pierrepont Moffat, head of the Western European Division of the [US] State Department, was complaining that German control of Central and Eastern Europe would mean “a still further extension of the area under a closed economy.”

And, more specifically, in May 1940 Assistant Secretary of State Breckenridge Long warned that a German-dominated [trade in] Europe would mean that “every commercial order will be routed to Berlin and filled under its orders somewhere in Europe rather than in the United States.”

Not only were Hull and the United States ardent in pressing an anti-German policy against its bilateral trade system, but sometimes Secretary Hull had to whip even Britain into line.

[In the mid-1930’s], the American Chamber of Commerce in Brazil repeatedly pressed the State Department to scuttle the Germany-Brazil barter deal, which the Chamber termed the “greatest single obstacle to free trade in South America.” Brazil was finally induced to cancel its agreement with Germany in exchange for a sixty-million dollar loan from the U.S.

And in late 1938, President Roosevelt asked Professor James Harvey Rogers, an economist and disciple of Irving Fisher, to make a currency study of all of South America in order to minimize “German and Italian influence on this side of the Atlantic.

In the spring of 1935, the German ambassador to Washington, desperately anxious to bring an end to American political and economic warfare, asked the United States what Germany could do to end American hostilities. The American answer, which amounted to a demand for unconditional economic surrender, was that Germany abandon its economic policy in favor of America.”

Quantrill Information

Kindness of Nancy

Not sure whether Nancy received your message as it came to me.

I provided this info and a few photos below to her when we were in the States earlier in the year, but she may not have passed it on to the members of your group.

To clarify, the link to William Clarke Quantrill may be a tenuous one, but I have a suspicion we are related to him, albeit distantly.

So is it Quantrill, Quantrell or Quantrelle ?

Although I was born in Wangaratta, Victoria Australia and grew up in Mitcham which is in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, my family is firmly linked to the South West. Sally & I have lived in Pomborneit Nth, Carpendeit, Terang and now Warrnambool. Our work has also taken us to Timboon, Camperdown, Noorat, Gnotuk, Bookaar, Hamilton, Portland and many other places around the Region.

My father looked into the origins of the Quantrelle family-name a bit before he died.....though much of the info below is from my own research [Google is a wonderful thing]

Quantrell[e] is of Gallic derivation from mercenary soldiers who fought with William the Conqueror in the Norman conquest of England 1066. Apparently they eventually settled in England. There is a town called Quintrell Downs near Newquay Cornwall where Mum and Dad visited on a trip to the UK. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quintrell_Downs_railway_station

Our other claim to fame is that there was an infamous guerilla soldier during the American Civil War called William Quantrill:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Quantrill

He had a band of rebel soldiers called "Quantrill's Raiders" [Cantrell's (sic) Raiders] which even had a movie made about them in 1958: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052103

I have a friend in Maryland on the West coast of the USA who's a bit of a history buff and he was really excited by the possible link we may have to that part of the States too.

My Dad [Glen Richard] grew up in Hamilton, Victoria where my Grandfather [Glen Stuart] was married to NelIie. Glen Stuart was a barber, however I never met him as he died when I was young. Sally and I actually visited the old barber shop [now an opportunity shop] in Gray St when I worked in Hamilton in 2001-2002.

My Grandfather was originally from Tasmania, but left there in the 1920s to come to the Australian mainland when for  reasons unknown, he added the letter “e” to the end of his surname.  I still have a second cousin in Hamilton who I stay in touch with, and one relative, Noel Quantrell [also a retired barber] in Ulverstone. We visited him and his wife Billie in March 2012. They were very generous with their time when we dropped in at short notice. This was a very special time and Sally and I felt very honoured and privileged to spend it with them “filling in the gaps” as it were in the Quantrell(e) family heritage.

Noel entertained us with stories and photos of the Quantrell clan from days gone by….. quite fascinating. He explained that my Grandfather (Glen Stuart) and his Father (Leonard Edwin) were twin brothers which was a surprise and I was most excited to discover that we were more closely related than I thought. He also explained that my Grandfather Glen’s nickname was “Bottler” which was quite a revelation and I’ll treasure his accompanying anecdotes about him and the other family members for many years to come.  As our photos from the time attest, the family's barber shop is referenced in the Ulverstone Museum as well.

My father was really pleased to have a Quantrelle back in the Western District and working in Hamilton, and shared this with me before he passed-away in 2001. He actually met my mother when playing tennis in Hamilton when she was on a holiday from Melbourne there staying with a friend !!

I presume, the family's origins being Tasmanian suggest a Convict heritage from England in the early 1800s,  possibly confirmed by the following listing for W[illia]m Quantrill on the Governer Ready in 1835 for TLK [Ticket Of Leave King's Birthday]:
http://www.hotkey.net.au/~jwilliams4/tascons5.htm

Dad had a twin sister, June and another younger sister, Yvonne. He also had an older brother, Stuart Burnley [aka Jack], however he was raised by Nellie’s parents when she became very ill when Yvonne was born and couldn’t cope with all the children. Glen & June and Faye stayed with their parents . Jack had three sons who all have families but I don’t know the children’s names. So that is the extent of the family name on the mainland - that we know of. An interesting side-note to all of this is that apparently Jack’s family have all dropped the "e" of the end of the name [Quantrell] as our current spelling [Quantrelle] was innovated by my Grandfather. The original spelling and that used by the remaining family in Tasmania is spelt "Quantrell" too.
http://search.ancestry.com.au/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gl&gst&rank=1&=%2C&gsfn=Mauge&gsln=Quantrelle&db=auselectoralrolls&gss=angs-d

Ironically Dad's family colourings are of the fairer kind - he was blonde !! This explains why I have two sisters with blonde and auburn hair and fair skin.

I believe Josh's European look, [ie tall dark and handsome] actually comes from the Clodd and my Mother's side of the family.[Darch] Mum's parent's immigrated from the UK in the 1920s, however Mum also has relatives in Italy. Her father Harold, Josh, an Italian relative and I all have a striking resemblance.....although Josh now has squarer Clodd hair-line, not the receding Quantrelle, which is an improvement !!

Feel free to share the information with your fellow Quantrill’s Guerillas supporters.  (I can send it as a one page  .pdf if that helps) ;-)

I trust that assists.

From Darkness To Light

For more than a week the nation has been watching the Trump transition team and the naming of cabinet members. It has been slow, but then, Trump does not have the cronies to repay that a typical president-elect does, nor does he have an apparatus to take from the Bush Administration and install into his own, because the establishment turned its collective backs on Trump early on.

The appointment of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General should send shockwaves through the Obama Administration, because Senator Sessions has always been one to hold others accountable against all headwinds. No one knows the future, but if this nation is ever to regain a semblance of credibility it must go through the darkness to get to the light. The law is the law and it is the law for everyone. If that is not true, and it has not been for a long time, then there is no justice.

Sanctuary cities, illegal immigration, pay for play, obstruction of justice, violation of the First, Second, Third (if violations of the Fourth allow for government surveillance in one's home without warrant or knowledge constitutes troops housed among the people) Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth (think about the IRS), Ninth and Tenth Amendments must be addressed.

The administration has already taken the first step to accommodate President-elect Trump’s positions, agreeing Friday to take a timeout on President Obama’s push to kick-start his 2014 deportation amnesty.

In documents filed with a federal judge in Texas the Justice Department said that in light of the new management that will take over next year, the case should be suspended.

“Accordingly, the parties respectfully submit that further proceedings on the merits of this case, including the submission of a schedule for resolving the merits, should be stayed until February 20, 2017,” the Justice Department and lawyers for Texas said in a joint request of Judge Andrew S. Hanen.

STOP NEOCON NIKKI HALEY FROM BEING APPOINTED BY PRESIDENT TRUMP

Image result for neocon nikki haley

This is time sensitive.  You must act immediately if you want to prevent this.  The appointment could come within hours.

Friends and Fellow Patriots,

I have been asked by my friends in South Carolina to share a very important message with you today about the dangerous NeoCon Nikki Haley.

As you may have seen on the national news in the past several days, South Carolina's NeoCon GOP governor, Nikki Haley, is attempting to weave her way into an appointment in the Trump administration. This is the LAST THING that true conservatives need. Nikki Haley is a proven NeoCon and will be a tool of the globalists to undermine everything that you sent President Trump to Washington to accomplish.

WE MUST NOT ALLOW NIKKI HALEY TO BE APPOINTED TO ANY KEY POSITION.

We need YOU to be a part of the huge grassroots effort to reach out to Vice-President Mike Pence who is heading up the Transition Team... and you must act immediately.

Please email the Vice-President-elect NOW and tell him that Nikki Haley is NO conservative and that conservatives do NOT want her appointed to any key position in the Trump administration. He needs to hear from conservatives all across the country immediately before it is too late. These decisions may all be made within the next 24 to 48 hours. YOU CAN NOT WAIT.

Be kind, be courteous, be short and to the point. Do not be ugly and do not be long-winded.

Here are some talking points...

1. Nikki Haley supported NeoCon Marco Rubio over Mr. Trump in the primary.

2. Nikki Haley repeatedly spoke ill of Mr. Trump all throughout the primary.

3. Nikki Haley has been no friend to traditional values in South Carolina.

4. Nikki Haley is NOT a conservative constitutionalist... she is a globalist neocon.

Tell Governor Pence that CONSERVATIVES DO NOT WANT NIKKI HALEY APPOINTED.

If you are a Southerner, do NOT bring up her attack upon the Confederate flag and Confederate heritage. Even though it is true, it will NOT help our efforts and may very well hurt them.

WHERE TO SEND YOUR EMAIL TO MIKE PENCE...

Send your email to Gov. Mike Pence, Transition Chairman to SarahEMakin@gmail.com

You must do it now. Please forward this email to anyone you know who is a genuine conservative or constitutionalist immediately.

If we're a nation of laws, confirm Jeff Sessions as Attorney General

Via Billy

 http://images.slideplayer.com/25/8092627/slides/slide_8.jpg

If 1986 is any indication, Jeff Sessions won't have an easy confirmation hearing. For Democrats, taking down Donald Trump's first Senate ally would be a major win in an otherwise bleak political environment for liberals. The muckrakers will come out in force. Sessions will be called every name under the sun, opponents will dig up every misstep from his past, and then he'll be confirmed—if the rule of law still matters.

Most people don't know what the "rule of law" means. It's more than a catchy political talking point. John Adams famously noted that a republic is "a government of laws, and not of men." Through our elected officials, we agree on the laws that define the contours of our society. Where those laws are duly enacted, no man is above their reach or immune from their enforcement.

That theme has been a hallmark of Jeff Sessions's professional career, but it hasn't been a reality over the past eight years.

Over the past several decades I have heard professors from those “little ivy-covered North Koreas” we still charitably refer to as colleges and universities as well as other professional hysterians all loudly shouting that the War of Northern Aggression was fought only to free the slaves in the South.

The only cause of that war was slavery, and the professional hysterians have loudly proclaimed that secession was treason and that all Southerners who fought for the Confederacy  should have been hanged as war criminals, and at the least, all of their descendants should be shot–but only after they have repented of the gross sin of slavery–but, maybe on the other hand, they should leave at least a few of them alive to they can continue to repent of and apologize for the sin of slavery. I can remember one excuse for a journalist once writing that “The Civil War was all about slavery, slavery slavery.

Electoral voters 'deluged' with death threats in multiple states

Via Billy

One of Michigan’s 16 electors who will be called upon to cast a vote validating the election of Donald Trump in the Electoral College has testified on video that he and others in the state are receiving “dozens and dozens of death threats” from Hillary Clinton supporters urging them to switch their votes to Clinton.

On Dec. 19 the Electoral College will convene to cast their votes for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, with each state’s electors pledged to vote for the candidate elected on Nov. 8 in their state.

But a handful of states have no laws making it illegal for the electors to change their vote while others have only a minor penalty such as a fine for doing so. If Clinton’s supporters can get enough of the 163 electors from states where Trump both won and votes can be legally switched on Dec. 19, Hillary Clinton becomes the next president of the United States.
