Old Western Man: C.S. Lewis and the Old South

I write not as an expert to tell you of my thought but to explain a particular concept of Lewis’s and my own application of it to the Old South. Almost everyone knows something about C.S. Lewis as a writer of extremely readable children’s books (about the land of Narnia that can be entered through the back of an old wardrobe) and as a witty and brilliant defender of orthodox Christianity.

Lewis has also been called the Apostle of the Skeptics. Those who have read his little book, The Great Divorce or his Space Trilogy know something of his faith as well as his brilliant imagination, while his Experiment in Criticism suggests Lewis the profound scholar. And the devastating little book The Abolition of Man has a direct bearing on my present topic. It is C.S. Lewis as prophet: a grim warning of where we may be heading and the role of our schools in taking us there.

Lewis was an Oxford don. He first came to Oxford as an undergraduate—his education interrupted by service in the First World War. He had, before he came up to Oxford, read more widely and deeply than most of us do in a lifetime. At Oxford he first read (studied) what is called “Greats,” which is, first, classical literature in Greek and Latin, and then the rigorous study of philosophy from the ancients to the moderns—with a severe examination in each. He then read English literature and was examined in that. A “FIRST” in those examinations at Oxford has been likened to a Phi Beta Kappa key—and Lewis won three FIRSTS. No other word fits this achievement but awesome.

While President-elect Donald Trump has been known to wield his Twitter account like a sword against his enemies, he tweeted a little praise for a band of Alabama's favorite sons.

Trump thanked the country band Alabama - the boys from Fort Payne fronted by Randy Owen - for performing at the Chairman's Global Dinner in Washington on Tuesday night.

"@TheAlabamaBand was great last night in D.C. playing for 147 diplomats and ambassadors from countries around the world. Thanks Alabama!" Trump tweeted at 8:03 a.m. Wednesday.

Ushering In A Totalitarian Police State In Cashless “Smart Cities”

Via Jonathan

From Scandinavia to Amsterdam to India and elsewhere, the trend of going “cashless” is gaining traction.

We have been covering the shortcomings of what is rightly called the War On Cash here at TDV for a while now and have shown just how negative the effects can be on an unsuspecting nation’s people.

Chandigarh, India, which is the capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, is like one of India’s labrats. Indian officials are working hard toward making it into India’s first cashless city.

This initiative is part of the Prime Minister of India’s call for state governments to begin developing what he’s calling “smart” cities.

That means cities attached to the latest internet technology. However there is nothing intelligent about his plan.

Our Addiction to Kompromat

 Kompromat

Anything that weakens, disrupts, negates, or damages the system makes it easier for Trump to operate and harder for the establishment to do the same.
Russia has two exports: energy and kompromat. Since energy isn't nearly as valuable as it was a decade ago, Putin has increased Russia's production of kompromat to compensate. So far, he's been fairly successful with this, but for an unexpected reason.

What is kompromat?  Kompromat is any material that can be used to discredit, mislead, blackmail, coerce, or confuse a targeted person or entity.  This material spans the gamut, from a leaked sex video to a financial document proving corruption. In short, any material can be used as long as it is effective at damaging an opponent.

Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Motors Corp. said they will spend $3.1 billion in the U.S. in the next five years, joining other vehicle manufacturers in announcing investment plans amid threats from President-elect Donald Trump of higher levies on auto imports from Mexico.

The planned U.S. investment by South Korea’s two largest automakers is about 50 percent more than the $2.1 billion they spent in the previous five-year period, Hyundai Motor President Chung Jin-haeng told reporters in Seoul on Tuesday. The group is considering building a new factory in the U.S. and may produce Hyundai Motor’s upscale Genesis vehicles and a U.S.-specific SUV in the country, said the executive, who also oversees the strategic planning for Kia.

Fake Polls? How CNN And ABC Are Fudging The Numbers To Tank Trump’s Favorability

Via Billy

(ABC)

Two polls released Tuesday — one from ABC and a second from CNN — tout Donald Trump as being the most unfavorable incoming president in modern history — yet on second look, the data is clearly boosted by the pollers’ decision to oversample Democrats.

According to Gallup, 28 percent of Americans identify themselves as a Republican, while 25 percent identify as a Democrat.

Despite this information, eight more percent of participants in both the ABC and CNN polls identified as Democrats, leading to an 11 point swing in partisanship breakdown off the national average.

Trump eyes 10% spending cuts, 20% slash of federal workers

Making good on a promise to slash government, President-elect Trump has asked his incoming team to pursue spending and staffing cuts.

Insiders said that the spending reductions in some departments could go as high as 10 percent and staff cuts to 20 percent, numbers that would rock Washington if he follows through.

At least two so-called "landing teams" in Cabinet agencies have relayed the call for cuts as part of their marching orders to shrink the flab in government.

Bikers for Trump secure space for inauguration amid several planned protests

Via Billy

Supporters and bikers at a Rolling Thunder rally on the National Mall listen to GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump speak. The organization offered an invitation for candidates to speak, but only Mr. Trump accepted.

Groups planning to protest President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration next month monopolized the National Park Service permits to use public spaces around Washington during the event — until Bikers for Trump showed up.

Bikers for Trump founder Chris Cox said he had to negotiate with National Park Service officials to find space for the motorcyclists because anti-Trump groups had scooped up nearly every location for their “disruption” events surrounding the Jan. 20 inauguration.

Securing a designated area for the thousands of bikers expected to roll into Washington to watch Mr. Trump take the oath of office is crucial to avoiding clashes between the two sides, he said.

Comment by Miss V on "Miss Violet on Westerners v Southerners"

MissV has left a new comment on your post "Miss Violet on Westerners v Southerners"

 image
 Mint Juleps & General Buckner

This has been an interesting topic to consider and I have enjoyed the conversation.

Two things keep coming to mind that I can not seem to move past.

The first, if you live somewhere where a small area has a high density liberal stronghold and because of that high population advantage those liberals make all the policy for your state, all the conservatives are made irrelevant. Not only are they irrelevant, there is NOTHING they can do about it and consequentially, their area/state is for all intents and purposes part of the liberal horde. I don't say this to upset anyone, it is just the reality.

The second observation is this. There is no way to keep people who don't hold your area's customs and culture, from moving to your area. Our country allows free movement throughout the country.

The only way it could be effectively done is to shoot them as they rush the border. :-) We know that isn't allowed because if it was, poor Florida wouldn't be full of retired Yankees and Idaho wouldn't be fending off Californians trying to bully us into abandoning our firearms.

Let's face it, if there was a foolproof strategy to keep outsiders out, the South would have implemented it a long time ago. :-)

Until such a thing is discovered, I say love your family, grow tomatoes, and depending on the time of day, drink tea or whiskey. :-)

Lee Jackson Day March - Confederate Push Back in Lexington, Virginia

Via Susan

The morning of Saturday, January 14th , 2017, Lee-Jackson Day in Lexington, Virginia, dawned cold and drizzly.  As we made our way out to a parcel of land just West of Lexington on Rt. 60, at the edge of Washington & Lee University, we wondered if the inclement weather would affect the turnout for the dedication of the 4th Roadside Memorial Confederate Battle Flag in Lexington.  Although there had only been a few days’ notice given, word of efforts by the Rockbridge County Director of Community Development to stop the installation of the flag pole in the days leading up to the service had caused an uproar in the community and when we arrived an hour and a half early, people were already there.  By the time the service started, the rain had let up and an estimated 250 people had gathered.
