North Carolina Passes First Free-Speech Law To Prevent Campus Censorship

North Carolina has become the first state to enact free-speech legislation based on the Goldwater Institute proposal, authored by Stanley Kurtz of National Review and Jim Manley and Jonathan Butcher of Arizona’s Goldwater Institute.

According to Kurtz, much of the credit for the passage of the Restore Campus Free Speech Act belongs to North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest, who worked with Kurtz since 2015, when Kurtz offered “A Plan to Restore Free Speech on Campus” at NRO.

The North Carolina Restore Campus Free Speech Act passed 80 to 31 in the House; 10 Democrats; surprisingly, roughly one-quarter of the Democrats in the House voted for the bill. In the state Senate, all 34 GOP members voted for the bill; all 11 Democrats voted against it.

Governor Rory Cooper did not act on the bill, which allowed it to pass. 17 colleges and universities are in the University of North Carolina system,

Election 2016: Late in 2016, we created a stir by suggesting that Donald Trump was likely right when he claimed that millions of noncitizens had illegally voted in the U.S. election. Now, a study by a New Jersey think tank provides new evidence that that's what happened.

Last November, just weeks after his Electoral College win that gave him the presidency, then President-elect Donald Trump tweeted, "In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally."

The reaction was angry and swift, with the left accusing him of being an "internet troll" and of hatching a "Twitter-born conspiracy theory."

At the time, we noted that a group called True The Vote, an online anti-voter-fraud website, had claimed that illegals had cast three million votes last year. The media and left-wing groups immediately portrayed True The Vote as a fringe group with little credibility.

The only problem is, a study in 2014 in the online Electoral Studies Journal made a quite similar claim: In the 2008 and 2010 elections, they said, as many as 2.8 million illegal noncitizen votes were cast, "enough to change meaningful election outcomes including Electoral College votes and congressional elections," said the study, authored by Jesse T. Richman and Gushan A. Chattha, both of Old Dominion University, and David C. Earnest of George Mason University.

The bombshell was this: "Noncitizen votes likely gave Senate Democrats the pivotal 60th vote needed to overcome filibusters in order to pass health care reform and other Obama administration priorities in the 111th Congress."

Justice Dept. to Take On Affirmative Action by investigating colleges for discriminating against white applicants

The Justice Department’s civil rights division is preparing to look into and possibly sue universities whose affirmative action admissions policies could be deemed discriminatory against white applicants, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

An internal memo, obtained by the Times, advertised for lawyers within the agency who would be interested in a new initiative that includes “investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.”

According to the Times report, the memo does not list any specific group of college applicants could be at risk of discrimination. However, the phrasing “intentional race-based discrimination” is geared towards affirmative action programs that aim to recruit more minority students to the student body.

Former Obama Aide Ben Rhodes now a person of interest in unmasking investigation

Former Obama White House National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes is now an emerging as a person of interest in the House Intelligence Committee’s unmasking investigation, according to a letter sent Tuesday by the committee to the National Security Agency (NSA). This adds Rhodes to the growing list of top Obama government officials who may have improperly unmasked Americans in communications intercepted overseas by the NSA, Circa has confirmed.

The House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-CA, sent the letter to the National Security Agency requesting the number of unmaskings made by Rhodes from Jan. 1, 2016 to Jan. 20, 2017, according to congressional sources who spoke with Circa. Rhodes, who worked closely with former National Security Adviser Susan Rice and was a former deputy national security adviser for strategic communications for President Obama, became a focus of the committee during its review of classified information to assess whether laws were broken regarding NSA intercepted
communications of President Trump, members of his administration and other Americans before and after the election, according to congressional officials. The committee is requesting that the NSA deliver the information on Rhodes by August, 21.

The MSM spent a tireless 24-hours attempting to lead the public away from knowing the truth about the Seth Rich case. NPR led the charge publishing a piece titled “Behind Fox News’ Baseless Seth Rich Story: The Untold Tale”, a piece they will no doubt have to HEAVILY retract and apologize for.

NPR attempts to disprove the story after they had gained access to a lawsuit against Fox News by Rod Wheeler. Wheeler is a former Fox contributor and the D.C. detective hired by Ed Butowsky, at the request of the Rich family, to investigate their son’s murder.

The NRP report alleges that on April 20th, after uncovering disturbing leads in the case, Butowsky and Wheeler met in the White House with Sean Spicer to brief him on what they were uncovering.

Wheeler believed, and expressed to FOX 5, that there is tangible evidence on Rich’s laptop that confirms he was communicating with WikiLeaks prior to his death.

North Korea's submarine fleet is a big threat

On Monday, CNN reported "highly unusual" North Korean submarine activity. Put simply, Kim Jong Un's regime is deploying more submarines in different ways and on longer missions.

This is not too much of a surprise. North Korea has aggressively focused on submarine development and operability for the last five years. What's different now is that the regime is reaching a new level of submarine competence. And that matters for a few reasons.

First, it represents a new era. For a long time, North Korea's submarine fleet has relied on archaic Russian vessels from the early Cold War era. Those ships are now four generations out of date and easily detectable by even the most basic anti-submarine sensors.

In recent years, however, North Korea has embraced self-made submarines. These ships are far-inferior to their U.S., South Korean, or Japanese counterparts, but they have been mass produced. As such, the North Koreans might be able to overwhelm individual allied vessels by their sheer numbers. Consider that Kim Jong Un already has around 70-90 submarines. As he builds and deploys more, he will strain allied monitoring efforts.

From the moment it was announced that Reince Priebus was out as chief of staff and he would be replaced by General Kelly, there was speculation that Kelly would overhaul the configuration of the White House. It is clear after day one that will be the case.

Kelly, a retired four-star general, was thought to be a choice that would restore much-needed discipline to the West Wing. With the firing of communications director Anthony Scaramucci on day one, we now know this is at the top of Kelly's agenda.

Trump getting Air Force Ones that were abandoned by a bankrupt Russian airline

The United States Air Force is purchasing planes abandoned by a bankrupt Russian airline and will convert them to Air Force Ones, according to a report released Tuesday.

Defense One reports that the Air Force will buy two planes from Boeing that are sitting unused in the Mojave Desert. The Russian airline Transaero went bankrupt and never acquired the planes and did not complete their payments.

"We're working through the final stages of coordination to purchase two commercial 747-8 aircraft and expect to award a contract soon," Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.

Doing a Web search of “FDR critics” I ran across this Cato Institute publication that condemns FDR for having harmed “millions” of poor people with his policies.  Applying the same “logic” that is used by some people associated with Cato (and the Koch-funded Institute for Humane Studies and various other nihilistic libertines who mislabel themselves as “libertarians”), it is reasonable to assume that the author of this article, and those who publish it, must be neo-Nazis.  After all, when people such as myself, Tom Woods, and Judge Napolitano criticize Lincoln, these Cato characters smear everyone associated with the Mises Institute and LewRockwell.com as “a bunch of neo-Confederates,” implying that we must secretly wish to bring back slavery.  If making critical comments about Lincoln makes one a “neo-Confederate,” then making critical comments about FDR makes one a “neo-Nazi” or a neo-Hitlerite.

Or perhaps the issue here is that too many people approach the study of history as though it is like a college football game where one either roots for the home team or the visiting team.  If you cheer when Alabama fumbles or throws an interception, then you must be an Auburn fan, and vice versa.

An alternative way of looking at historical research is that it is a search for learning about historical reality and not a sporting event.  As such, there are no winners and losers, as with sporting events.  If you look at it that way, then criticisms of Lincoln or FDR are just that — criticisms of Lincoln and FDR, period, case closed.  Unless of course you are simply lying and deceiving in order to smear and slander those with whom you disagree about public policy matters.  The modus operandi of the left-wing hate group known as the Southern Poverty Law Center, in other words.

House Judiciary Member: Mueller Legally Required To Resign Over ‘Conflict Of Interest’

Republican Arizona Rep. Trent Franks says that Robert Mueller is in “clear violation” of federal law prohibiting a special counsel from having a conflict of interest and therefore must immediately resign as special counsel overseeing the Russia investigation.

Mueller’s reported friendship with former FBI director James Comey presents a clear conflict of interest, according to Franks, who is a senior member on the House Judiciary Committee. Federal law defines a conflict of interest as: “a personal relationship with any person substantially involved in the conduct that is the subject of the investigation or prosecution.”

August 6, 2011: Retired Air Force Capt. Joni Marquez and her crew were working the dark morning hours aboard an AC-130 gunship after being summoned to a mission she describes “as almost like a 9-1-1 type of a situation.”

The gunship was ordered to fly close-in air support above Afghanistan’s dangerous Tangi Valley, in Wardak Province, assisting troops with the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment who were being fired on by eight heavily armed Taliban insurgents.

U.S. eases environment laws for Mexico border wall near San Diego

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said on Tuesday it would waive environmental and related laws in order to expedite building security-related barriers and roads along the nation's border with Mexico near San Diego.

The projects would focus on about 15 miles (24 km) of the frontier extending eastward from the Pacific Ocean as part of President Donald Trump's planned wall between the United States and Mexico, the DHS said in a statement. It said the area is one of the busiest U.S. border sections.

"The sector remains an area of high illegal entry for which there is an immediate need to improve current infrastructure and construct additional border barriers and roads," the DHS said.

“The Unshaken Rock:” The Jeffersonian Tradition in America

 

One key difference can be found in the Confederate Constitution’s Article 1, Section 2, Clause 5, which gave the state legislatures the power to impeach and remove “any judicial or other Federal officer, resident and acting solely within the limits of any State.”  This was the heart and soul of Confederate governing principles.  If federal officials meddled in state and local affairs, they could be banished from the state.  This was one of the crucial components of Jeffersonian political thought, designed solely to preserve federalism. Yet establishment historians say it wasn’t about states’ rights.

There were also other notable differences in the Confederate Constitution that fall along Jeffersonian lines: God was mentioned in the Preamble. The President could serve only one six-year term and had a line item veto to control spending.  It outlawed protective tariffs, banned the international slave trade, removed the “general welfare” clause, prohibited federally-funded internal improvements (today known as “earmarks”), required a two-thirds vote of each house of Congress for appropriations, forbid recess appointments, and prohibited persons of foreign birth who had not obtained citizenship from voting for any office on the state or federal level. All of these provisions upheld the Jeffersonian ideal.

When historians discuss reasons for Southern secession, as if the South needed to produce one, perhaps the most important, and sometimes neglected, motive was the protection of the Jeffersonian tradition, essentially the right to self-government.  What was this Jeffersonian tradition or ideal? It is our lost political heritage of limited government and federalism, the political ideals that made up what might be called Jeffersonian conservatism. Those traditions came under attack in 1861 with the Lincolnian Revolution, which tried to kill it and has nearly succeeded.

The Jefferson tradition is a set of political principles, the true ideals of the revolution that Thomas Jefferson referred to as “the bright constellation” that guides our path. For Millard Fillmore, a one time Northern Whig, they represented a “beautiful fabric” and a “priceless inheritance.” For Franklin Pierce, it was these ideals, embodied in the “unshaken rock” of the Constitution that could keep the nation from falling into faction and division, if they were adhered to.
