The Importance of a Good Death

Image result for Conversations with Shelby Foote, William C. Carter, editor, University Press of Mississippi,

Southern historian Shelby Foote explained that “the best historical reading is the source material . . . written by people who saw it.” And he recognized that the people who made up the Confederacy, the especially the yeoman farmers, were fiercely independent. “He was not only convinced that he was as good as you were, but if you questioned it, he would shoot you off your horse.” Men like these made for a fearless army few wanted to contend with.

The Importance of a Good Death

“You don’t want to overlook something that the [South] did have and that was tremendous courage. I’ve studied and studied hard the charge at Gettysburg, the charge at Franklin, the charge at Gaines Mill, or the Northern charge at Fredericksburg, wave after wave, and I do not know of any force on God’s earth that would have got me in any one of those charges.

It absolutely called for you to go out there and face certain death, practically. Now, I will do any kind of thing like that under the influence of elation and the adrenalin popping; it’s just inconceivable to us nowadays that men would try tactics that were fifty years behind the weapons.

They thought that to mass your fire, you had to mass your men, so they suffered casualties. Some battles ran as high as 30 percent. Now that’s just unbelievable, because 4 or 5 percent is very heavy casualties nowadays. You go into a battle and suffer 30 percent . . . at Pickett’s charge, they suffered 60 percent and it’s inconceivable to us . . . the stupidity of it, again.

Originally, the South had a big advantage. They were used to the castes of society and did not take it as an affront that a man had certain privileges. They didn’t think it made him any better than they were. But those privileges came his way, and they were perfectly willing for him to have them as long he didn’t think he was any better than they were.

But the Northern soldiers, they weren’t putting up with any privileges. A Massachusetts outfit spent its first night in the field and damn near had a revolution because the officers wanted to put their bedrolls out of the line. Well, the Southerners never had that problem. It seemed to them sensible that the officers should be over here, and the men there.

Of course, 99.9 percent of that war was fought by home folks. The fighting men were of very high quality, too. You see, those units were together for four years, many of them, and they became superb fighting machines.

You take an outfit like the Twenty-third Virginia: after four years and large numbers of casualties great battles, it becomes a very skillful military instrument. They never went home. Very few furloughs were given – some during the winter months to a few people.

The Civil War was an interesting time. It was very important to make what was called a “good death.” When you are dying, the doctor says you are dying, he [says] you will die about 9 o’clock tonight. You assemble your family around you and sing hymns, and you are brave and stalwart and tell the little woman that she has been good to you and not to cry. And you tell your children to be good and mind their mother. Daddy’s fixing to go away.

That was called a good death, and it was important. It was of tremendous importance.”

Massive Roadside Memorial Battle Flag Raised on I-64 in Charlottesville Today

Earlier today, in a small, private ceremony, the Va Flaggers hoisted a 30’ x 50’ Confederate Battle Flag on a 120’ pole on property leased on Interstate 64 just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Charlottesville I-64 Spirit of Defiance Memorial Battle Flag was dedicated to the glory of God, and will fly in honor and memory of all Confederate soldiers, and specifically to remember Private Richard Willis Proffitt, 1st Battalion, Virginia Reserves, 57th Virginia Infantry, whose grave lies just a few yards from the new flag.  In a ceremony just before the flag raising and dedication, a Confederate Cross of Honor was installed and dedicated at the grave site.

"The Second Amendment. Is it useful?"

Not unless you attempt to assault me.

In the wake of former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens calling for a repeal of the Second Amendment, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said changes to gun laws being discussed are Band-Aids.

“Even if they changed the age limit, it’s all a Band-Aid,” Popovich said. “The obvious elephant in the room is the guns, weapons of war, the magazines. The real discussion should be about the Second Amendment. Is it useful? Does it serve its purpose the way it was supposed to do in the beginning? That discussion should be had.

More Dinero for the Wall! Trump freezing Syria funds in signal of US pullback

June 23, 2013: In this photo released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, Syrians investigate damages after two suicide bombings hit security compounds in Damascus, Syria.

President Donald Trump is freezing more than $200 million in funds for recovery efforts in war-torn Syria amid a reassessment of the role the U.S. should play in the drawn-out conflict there, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The White House ordered the State Department to put the funds on hold, the report said. According to The Journal, Trump did so after reading a news report saying that the U.S. had recently committed an additional $200 million to early recovery efforts.

Exiting Secretary of State Rex Tillerson pledged the money in February in Kuwait at a meeting of the coalition trying to defeat the Islamic State (ISIS).

Childhood home of Robert E. Lee listed at $8.5M

Image result for home of Robert E. Lee

The boyhood home of Confederate general Robert E. Lee has spent stints as a high-society gathering place, museum and most recently, private family home — and it's now up for sale.

The Washington Post reports owners Mark and Ann Kington want the next owners of the house in Alexandria, Virginia, to be stewards of its past.

The home, listed at $8.5 million, was built in 1796, and soon sold to a plantation owner who entertained George Washington. Lee's father rented it in 1812, and for eight decades, Lee family members lived there.

The home changed hands thrice in the 20th century, from a Bureau of Mines chief to a Pulitzer Prize-winner to the Stonewall Jackson Foundation, which opened it to the public. The Kingtons bought the home in 2000 and renovated it.

Trump’s Aluminum Tariff: A Teachable Moment

Tariff 1824, John Randolph Of Roanoke

President Trump’s proposed ten-percent tariff on refined aluminum yields a teachable moment for Southern history students. Historical analysis of the industry reveals an echo of the Northern tariff policies that angered Southerners during much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when the South was generally a raw materials exporter and feedstock supplier to Northern manufacturers.

Tariffs during the era usually protected the Northern factories against competition from imports. Finished cotton goods made in New England, for example, benefitted from high tariff walls against imports of British finished goods. In contrast, a hypothetical raw cotton tariff could not benefit Southern cotton farmers because they were already the World’s low cost producers. In other words, a raw cotton tariff could not have blocked any imports since the imports were already negligible because of the South’s intrinsic cost advantage.

Media Fail: Only 39% Say Stormy Story Important While 59% Believe Clinton Accusers

Adult performer Stormy Daniels sits down for an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, which was broadcast by CBS News' 60 Minutes.

Only 39 percent of those polled attach any importance to the media’s obsessive coverage of Stormy Daniels, while a comfortable majority of 59 percent do believe those who have accused former-President Bill Clinton of sexual assault.

Rasmussen Reports, one of the most accurate pollsters in the 2016 presidential campaign, has nothing but bad news for a mainstream media dedicated to taking down President Trump, and who are now desperate enough to do so using what was, at worst, a consensual one-night extra-marital affair with a porn queen.

Frankly, I am awed, amazed and even embarrassed.  I was born in Switzerland, lived most of my life there, I also visited most of Europe, and I lived in the USA for over 20 years.  Yet in my worst nightmares I could not have imagined the West sinking as low as it does now.  I mean, yes, I know about the false flags, the corruption, the colonial wars, the NATO lies, the abject subservience of East Europeans, etc.  I wrote about all that many times.  But imperfect as they were, and that is putting it mildly, I remember Helmut Schmidt, Maggie Thatcher, Reagan, Mitterrand, even Chirac!  And I remember what the Canard Enchaîné used to be, or even the BBC.  During the Cold War the West was hardly a knight in white shining armor, but still – rule of law did matter, as did at least some degree of critical thinking.

I am now deeply embarrassed for the West.  And very, very afraid.

All I see today is a submissive herd lead by true, bona fide, psychopaths (in a clinical sense of the word)

And that is not the worst thing.

John Brennan Entered CIA in 1980 Though Voted Communist in 1976

Barack Obama’s CIA chief, John Brennan, told the Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus, on 15 September 2016, in Washington DC, that when he had applied in 1980 to join the CIA, he admitted to them that in the 1976 Presidential election, when Jimmy Carter was running against Gerald Ford, Brennan had voted instead for the candidate of the US Communist Party, Gus Hall, and that he was then greatly relieved to find that this information didn’t cause rejection of his CIA-application. This had happened 11 years before the 1991 end of the Cold War (which ended actually only on the Russian side, but not also on the US-NATO side, where it continues without stop, and has accelerated since 2014, now finally being joined by both sides).

Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, is opening a gun range for its students this week.

Students at Liberty University, a conservative Christian university in Virginia, will be invited this week to enjoy their campus’s new $3.2 million gun range. The gun range, which has been in planning and construction stages for over a year, will also be open to the public following the conclusion of Liberty’s academic year in May.

Brad Butler, the planning coordinator in Liberty’s Planning and Construction department, said in December that Liberty will be the first American college campus that has venues for every Olympic shooting sport.

“We’re very excited and we have a great plan for the future,” Butler said. “What’s unique about this facility is it’s the only range on any college campus that has venues for all Olympic shooting sports. The rest of the world is moving away from the Second Amendment and the shooting sports. Liberty University, thanks to the bold leadership of President (Jerry) Falwell and Vice President (Trey) Falwell, is running to it. We are engaging our students, giving them safe and convenient opportunities to compete, and to learn the right way to handle a firearm.”

Liberty University is known for its strong stance on the second amendment. Students at Liberty are permitted to keep firearms in their dorm rooms. Additionally, students who are uncomfortable around guns are permitted to request a room transfer away from a room that has a gun. Now, Liberty University will become one of only two schools in the country that has a gun range.

Liberty sophomore Landon Dalton explained that being a part of Liberty’s shooting sports team helped him grow as a Christian. “I got introduced to a whole new world up here in competitive shooting and it’s been awesome,” Dalton said. “Coach Hartman has really helped us out a lot. He’s a very godly man and a great coach and he’s helped us grow as teammates and as shooters, but more importantly as better Christians.”

This is both a plea and a warning to angry reform-minded voters from someone working in Washington, D.C.  Many of you are frustrated and angered at President Trump and the omnibus bill, believing that momentum for improving the system has stalled, and some have declared they will vote for the Democratic Party as a punishment against Trump.  That is your choice, but I ask you to consider some observations from someone who is, however lowly, part of the current federal system.  If you "punish" Trump in the midterms by voting for the very party that wrote the omnibus bill, you will accomplish nothing.

Although disappointed,  I am not completely shocked about Trump and the omnibus bill.  The problem is that the legislative process is designed from the outset to be slow, compromising, and inflexible, with the intent of preventing corruption and abuse of power from gaining a  foothold in the government.  Unfortunately, once that corruption takes hold, the very process designed to impede such corruption will now protect it due to its lumbering statutory procedures.

If you currently own a reciprocating stock you will soon be in possession of a machine gun. Unlawful possession of a machine gun is a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison, according to the DOJ

[Photos] A Glimpse Into Life in Vung Tau in 1967

Been there many a time (once on my honeymoon) and looks basically the same today.

Today, Vung Tau is a bustling tourist spot for Saigoneers looking to get out of the city and enjoy some ocean waves, but these photos from 1967 reveal its past as a working port.

Vung Tau has been an important city for centuries, especially because its unique geography allowed for it to serve as a safe harbor during storms – a fact alluded to in its name, which translates to “anchoring bay.” It has therefore long fostered commerce and activity as the below photos by Chris Chubb attest to.

From markets stuffed with clothes, engine parts and cooking ingredients, 50 years ago Vung Tau hosted a frenzy of trade. But once one left the busy city center, the activity quickly gave way to quiet fields and humble buildings. Farmers tending crops and traditional wooden boats resting at low tide reveal what Vung Tau was like before the resorts gobbled up the coastline.

Take a peek at the crammed markets and peaceful surroundings in the photos below:

NC Guns: BOYCOTT PUSH BACK

Image result for temper tantrum David HoggRelated image

Perhaps boycotts have their place but going after another person’s livelihood for some innocuous statement, just because you have a minor disagreement, is not one of those places.

Recently, Laura Ingraham used her twitter account to question the reasons that the child anti-Second Amendment activist, David Hogg, was not accepted to certain universities. Ingraham tweeted:

David Hogg Rejected By Four Colleges To Which He Applied and whines about it. (Dinged by UCLA with a 4.1 GPA...totally predictable given acceptance rates.)

This seems a somewhat meaningless (and boring) tweet really, but apparently it sent Hogg, having recently discovered the ultimate rush of near monarchial power, into a tantrum such that he tweeted that all should contact Laura Ingraham’s advertisers and threaten to boycott them unless they dumped their advertising on Ingraham’s show. Really? Read more here.

If you don’t support boycotts based strictly on the temper tantrum of a prideful student activist, who is sadly being used by the American media to push an agenda, you can contact these advertisers to let them know that David Hogg does not speak for you, and express your disdain for Lord of the Flies-style leadership).

If you are an adult, or a mature youngster, find details below on how you can contact the advertisers in question, and support gun freedom and adult rule in North Carolina and in America.

Hank Williams' Funeral

This piece was originally printed in Southern Partisan magazine in 1985.

Hank Williams has now been dead longer than he lived. And outside of a hundred or more fine songs, his thrity-year-old memory survives best among some of his cousins down in Georgiana, Alabama, about sixty miles south of Montgomery. Among them are Taft and Erleen Skipper (Taft’s daddy and Hank’s mother were brother and sister), who run a kind of clearing house on Hank. Taft is a tall, thin, and happy man, content to make way for a vital wife who keeps up a hand-written correspondence that would intimidate the secretarial corps at General Motors. Hank’s fans call Erleen so often to chat about their hero that she has to sleep with the phone off the hook. But she’ll talk to you in daylight.

And if you love Hank like she does, she’ll have you to dinner the day before the Hank Williams Memorial Picnic. (That way you’ll know enough people to feel at home when she has you to dinner again at the picnic). I swear that she’ll have cousins who have come all the way from Mobile and Panama City eat in the kitchen to make room at the table for a stranger from New York or Oklahoma who wants to know more about Hank.

AR-15 vs. AK-47: Which Is King?

It’s a discussion that has preoccupied some gun enthusiasts for decades. Which is better between the civilian-legal versions of the two primary military weapons of the Cold War superpowers: the AR-15 or the AK-47? I’ve owned both, so I figured that was as good a reason as any to pretend my opinion counts for anything and get to work.

As time has marched on, the positions have shifted a bit as economic realities changed. That’s why some older discussions on the internet might give you some bad information that’s not relevant in this day and age. What was true seven or eight years ago may or may not be true today.

The massive Russian-backed Syrian military offensive in suburbs east of Damascus is almost over, with rebels holed up in just a single town after abandoning the rest of the eastern Ghouta enclave, Moscow said on Thursday.

Russia and the rebel faction controlling Douma, the last Ghouta town still in insurgent hands, said they were still negotiating over the fate of the town. Moscow said it saw a chance of the remaining insurgents quitting Douma.

Thousands of fighters have accepted Russian-brokered deals to leave other parts of the enclave in the past week with their families on government-supplied buses, giving them safe passage to other insurgent-held areas. Tens of thousands of other civilians have stayed behind to accept state rule, and tens of thousands more have fled across the frontline.

Former Obama-era Attorney General Eric Holder doesn’t exactly have the best memory. Just look at any of the statements before Congress during the inquiry into the Fast and Furious scandal.

I’m sure Mexican gun runners will just love that. But never mind. The point is that Holder hasn’t stepped out of the spotlight, especially when it comes to promoting liberal causes.

The recent kiddies' 'March for Our Lives' seems vaguely reminiscent of Cambodia's 1970's Children's Revolution which was led by the manipulative Marxist, Pol Pot.   This children's revolution disarmed the Cambodian populace and afterwards, 25% of them were killed; nearly two million people in all.

The goal of the American Left is to do the same, which is why (were the 2nd Amendment repealed)
instead of turning in our guns as others have done, we will aim our guns AT THEM.  We will not meekly suffer the same horrific fate as those many tens of millions of helpless victims in Cambodia, Nazi Germany, Cuba,Russia, China and elsewhere. Here, the leftists will be annihilated, not us.

Parkland Gun Control Activists Driving Americans Toward 2nd Amendment

Kasky, Hogg, Gonzalez

As Parkland gun control activists and their surrogates mock the idea of arming teachers, march for gun bans in D.C., and call for new gun controls via Twitter, they risk driving Americans toward the Second Amendment instead of away from it.

They run this risk via their in-your-face gun control hubris, especially when that hubris is directed toward docile actors.

For example, on Monday Rep. Steve King (R-IA) addressed Parkland students who want to raise the minimum age for gun purchases by asking, “If you are a teenager & believe you won’t be responsible enough to own a gun until 21, why should you vote before 21?” That is a reasonable question when one considers that voting and owning guns are both constitutional rights. Yet the responses to his question varied between things  too vulgar to print and pronouncements that his political career is over–that he is a pawn of the NRA and is going to be voted out office

ANALYSIS: Constitution Compels Sessions Dismiss Mueller From Non-Campaign Cases

Via comment by Badger

Paul Manafort‘s legal team brought a motion to dismiss on Tuesday, notingthat Rosenstein could not appoint Mueller to any investigation outside the scope of the 2016 campaign since Sessions did not recuse himself for anything outside the campaign. I agree with this take on Mueller’s authority. If we follow that argument that would mean Sessions himself has exclusive authority to appoint a special counsel for non-collusion charges, and Sessions has taken no such action. Sessions himself should make that clear to Mueller, rather than await court resolution. Doing so would remove three of the four areas of inquiry from Mueller’s requested interview with President Trump.

Dating back at least 12,000 years, it is home to the oldest known temple in the world, comprised of numerous megalithic pillars weighing between 40 and 60 tonnes and T-shaped stelas with intricate depictions of bulls, snakes, foxes, lions and other animals carved into the stone.

Former Obama Official: Warnings on Russian Trolls, Potential Election Meddling Were Ignored

A former Obama White House official said the U.S. government could have prevented Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Brett Bruen, who served as the White House director of global engagement from 2013 to 2015, told CNN that in 2014 he warned his colleagues on former President Obama's National Security Council that Russian trolls interfered in Ukraine's 2014 election and could do the same to the United States.

"I was sitting in the Situation Room saying, 'This is something that's going to march across Western Europe. It's something that's going to march over to our shores, and we need to be ready,'" Bruen told CNN, explaining the State Department dismissed his idea of a "command center" to counter Russian disinformation.

Senator will introduce bill that would send illegal border crossers immediately back to home country

border stat
Oklahoma’s senior senator says he has a novel way to end the controversial practice of “catch and release” on the border.

Instead of releasing illegal immigrants once they are caught trying to enter the country – and hope they show up to immigration court – Sen.  Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., proposes sending them back to their home country. That way, he said, the illegal immigrants don’t become “absorbed” in the U.S. after they fail to show up to court.

Good Fences Make Good Neighbors

It has been argued that the Civil War was a conflict between the abstract principles of the North and the concrete loyalties of the South. What this amounts to is two distinct concepts of liberty. Lincoln conceived liberty as a kind of Platonic ideal to be pursued by a benevolent central government and enforced, if need be, at the point of a bayonet.

A review of Regionalism and Nationalism in the United States: The Attack on Leviathan by Donald Davidson (Transaction Books, 1991).

August 18, 1993 will mark the centennial of Donald Davidson’s birth. On April 25 of that year, he will have been dead a quarter of a century. During his lifetime Davidson was considered the most minor of the major Fugitives, and nothing has happened since his death to force a revision of that judgment. In a recent essay, M. E. Bradford noted that today when Davidson is discussed as poet, he is portrayed as ‘“an anachronism’ and belated romantic, merely a voice of nostalgia with no irony and no sense of the ‘proper strategy for a poem.’” Those who consider his criticism point out that while Ransom, Tate. Brooks, and Warren were editing major literary quarterlies. Davidson largely confined his critical and editorial labors to the book page of the Nashville Tennessean. Finally, Davidson maintained an obstinate loyalty to the Agrarian faith when his Vanderbilt soulmates had moved on to other interests and other allegiances. Such is the conventional wisdom.

Goodies From Ol' Remus

It's said a mild Scottish accent is most attractive to western ears—a Scottish lass told me so, but I have a different candidate, namely, English as spoken by General Lee in Turner's Civil War films. It shares a membrane with Shakespeare, frames even trivial thoughts in biblical terms, yet is often astonishing in its directness. Some of Lee's contemporaries, those who dared expressed an opinion, said he spoke like an old lady, which may or may not have been a compliment, impossible to say at this remove. I suspect not.

Bridge, Taki's Magazine - Because of the left’s “diversity or die” crusade, Florida International University and Munilla Construction Management felt the need to present the bridge as the product of “diversity.” They couldn’t just say, “Hey, look at this cool bridge we built.” They had to add, “And diversity dunnit.” Because that’s all that matters. Not the quality of the work, but the gender and color of the workers. And if the rubble of Diversity Bridge is to hold any significance at all, let it be this: Let’s dial back the “diversity in STEM” fanaticism just a tad. Let’s get back to focusing on the quality of the work, and not whether our engineering classrooms and construction companies resemble a 1970s Coke commercial.
