Radical Republican Motivation
U.S. Rep. Thaddeus Stevens
“Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” And “secession” is what is celebrated in the United States every Fourth of July.
Having militarily destroyed the American South’s political and economic strength as well as causing a million deaths in the process, the Republican party was determined to maintain political hegemony and turn the South into an economic colony. Once the South was defeated and occupied, Republicans created a solid bloc of black voters to politically dominate the South.

Radical Republican Motivation
“Although the South lost the war, the “slave power” did not give up but continued the struggle in a different form. Recognizing the continuing and persistent menace, Michigan’s Governor Henry Crapo, warned in 1866: “It is not slavery, but the spirit which seeks to make slavery the corner stone of the empire, that we now have to guard against – that element of hatred to freedom and equality that instituted the conflict . . . That spirit is neither dead nor sleeping . . . Having failed so utterly in the resort to force, it will but recuperate its energies for a more insidious attack in a different method of warfare. “
However incomplete or inaccurate they might be, such views were to constitute the bases of the Radical Republican program for a decade after the Civil War. The identification of the Republican party with the promotion of freedom and democracy against “slave power” and “aristocracy” gave the Republicans a messianic sense of destiny.
Republican identification of the Democratic party with slavery and treason made Republican control of the national government a patriotic necessity. Further, Republicans viewed the struggle as occurring between ageless, eternal principles – “slave power” and “aristocracy” were resilient, crafty, and powerful.
Far reaching and drastic measures were necessary to extirpate their roots. The Republicans willingly accepted the appellation of “Radical” . . . [and] had developed much of their program long before Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.
The Southerners, stated [Michigan Congressman] John Longyear should be treated as subjugated enemies.
[US] Senator Jacob Howard [of Michigan] . . . wanted a genuine loyalty in the South as the basis for readmission to the Union. “The people of the North,” he prophesied, “are not such fools as to fight through such a war as this, to spend so vast an amount of treasure, as they must necessarily spend in bringing it to a successful termination – that they are not such fools as to sacrifice a hundred and fifty or two hundred thousand lives in putting down this rebellion, and then turn around and say to the traitors, “All you have to do is to come back into the councils of the nation and take an oath that henceforth you will be true to the Government.” Sir, it would be simple imbecility, folly . . .”
Until a majority became loyal [to the North], Howard advocated keeping [the South] out of the Union and in “tutelage” up to twenty years. Howard reasoned that a hostile and belligerent community could not claim the right to elect members of Congress.
“Are public enemies,” he asked, “entitled to be represented in the Legislature of the United States?” “A secession traitor,” Senator [Zachariah] Chandler growled, “is beneath a loyal Negro. I would let a loyal Negro vote. I would let him testify; I would let him fight; I would let him do any other good thing, and I would exclude a secession traitor.”

Pop Icon Morrissey Says Diversity is Not a Strength
Via Hard Right
Pop icon Morrissey has once again offended the outrage mob by
asserting that diversity is not a strength because “everyone has ideas
that will never correspond”.
In an interview posted to his website, the former Smiths front man once again tore into political correctness.
On the UK: “The UK is a dangerously hateful place now, and I think we need someone to put a stop to the lunacy and to speak for everyone.”
On the Notre Dame fire: “Let’s be realistic … it’s arson. Everybody knows that. You can judge it by the speed by which the corporate media rushed to call it an accident even though the fire had just started and no one was in any position to know anything. Brainwashing! It’s a bit like hearing the full reason behind a plane crash even though the plane has yet to hit the ocean.”

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be a bloody, logistical nightmare
Via Lê Bá Dzũng
Roaring out of the sky, an F-16V fighter jet lands smoothly to rearm and refuel on an unremarkable freeway in rural Taiwan, surrounded by rice paddies.
In different circumstances, this could be alarming sight. Taiwan's fighter pilots are trained to land on freeways between sorties in case all of the island's airports have been occupied or destroyed by an invasion.
Luckily, this was a training exercise.

American citizen from Orange County sentenced to 12 years in Vietnam
The defendants and others “joined an organization called Quoc noi quat khoi, drew up plans to buy weapons, incited people to join illegal demonstrations and to conduct activities to overthrow the State of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam by violent measures,” Vietnamese officials said in their statement. Sounds reasonable to me. :)

Historic Catholic Bell Removed from UC Santa Cruz After Being Deemed a ‘Racist’ Symbol
Via Cousin John
The El Camino Real Bell was removed from the University of California Santa Cruz after administrators had several discussions with members of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band and other community members who felt that the bell marker glorified a period of time when Spanish missionaries dehumanized their ancestors and culture and enslaved those who converted to Christianity.
“in support of efforts to be more inclusive”
History is being removed from view, little by little. It’s death by a million paper cuts.
A university in California removed a historical symbol from its campus Friday in an effort to be “more inclusive” after a years-long campaign by Native American community members argued the marker highlighted a period of racism in the state.

Muslim Syrian Refugee Plotted a Black Church Massacre
Via Cousin John
Black leaders silent. And Democrats want more jihad immigration.
Northview Heights, the low-income housing project, is 90% African-American. Or at least it was.
Then a flood of Syrian Muslim refugees showed up. Obama had promised to admit 10,000 Syrian migrants in 2016. The terrorist who plotted a massacre at a black church was one of them.
The Alowemer clan arrived at JFK airport in New York City. The same airport through which other terror refugees, including the World Trade Center bombers, had penetrated the United States. Instead of staying in New York, they were resettled in Pittsburgh joining a growing Syrian enclave there.

“The best news is when you call get ready for
jihad,” Mustafa Mousab Alowemer wrote in a public housing project in

The Real McCarthy Record
Via Richard
Decades after the death of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, twice-elected
United States Senator from Wisconsin, the term "McCarthyism" is still
widely used as a convenient and easily understood epithet for all that
is evil and despicable in the world of politics. Hardly a month passes
without some reference to "McCarthyism" in the print or electronic
media. Despite the frequency with which the term is invoked, however, it
is quite clear that not one critic of McCarthy in a hundred has the
slightest idea of what he said and did during that controversial period
from 1950 to 1954.
Whether Joe McCarthy was right or wrong, it is important that we know the truth about him.
Medford Evans put it well when he said: "The restoration of McCarthy ... is a necessary part of the restoration of America, for if we have not the national character to repent of the injustice we did him, nor in high places the intelligence to see that he was right, then it seems unlikely that we can or ought to survive."

56% Favor Popular Vote to Decide Presidency, WSJ/NBC News Poll Finds
Via John
Most Democrats say eliminating the electoral college would improve democracy in the U.S., while more Republicans say term limits for Congress would bring improvement, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.
Among Democrats, 81% said electing a president by who received the most votes nationally would in some way improve democracy, as opposed to through the current electoral college system. That compared with 52% of independents and 32% of Republicans. In both the 2000 and 2016 presidential election, Democratic candidates won the popular vote but lost the electoral college.
