In Defense of General Forrest
Col. Abel Streight's force was made up largely of "tories" (Union
loyalists) who were recruited from northwest Alabama. Most of these men
belonged to the 1st Ala. Cav. U.S. Other regiments who took part were
the 3rd Ohio, 51st Indiana, 73rd Illinois, and 18th Illinois. The men
of the 1st Ala. were practically on a cake walk as they led Streight
through familiar and often times loyalist territory. The main objective
was to destroy the Western and Atlantic railroad and it's sidetracks
that were being used to supply the Army of Tennessee. Things were going
good for Col. Streight until CSA Gen. Phillip Roddey of Moulton, Alabama
began to screen the movements of the enemy force and worked in
conjunction with Forrest to begin pursuit of the invaders.
If anyone
isn't familiar with the story, the capture of Streight and his men was a
stroke of genius executed by Forrest who was outnumbered approximately 3
to 1. It is a great story and I will not spoil it here. The fighting
began at Battleground, then on to Hog Mountain, Days Gap (Blountsville,
and parts of what is presently Cullman and Etowah counties today), and
then on to Gadsden and the battle of Black Water Creek where Confederate
Heroine, Emma Samson, did her part to show Forrest a ford in which to
cross and pursue the Union forces (Streight's men had burned every
bridge as they crossed it along this route which is pretty much U.S. Hwy
278 today). As an interesting note, Forrest also killed fellow
Confederate Officer Lt. A. Wills Gould who shot Forrest in the hip after
a disagreement where Gould allowed artillery pieces to be captured and
spiked. After being shot, Forrest stabbed Gould who lingered long
enough to apologize to Forrest for shooting him. At first it appeared
that NBF's wound would prove fatal, but he recovered fully and in time
for Chickamauga.

Research from investment bank JP Morgan allegedly found coronavirus infection rates decreasing in states that have lifted their lockdown measures.
CNBC anchor Carl Quintanilla posted a lengthy thread to Twitter outlining the investment bank’s research, which counters many media and political figures who predicted dire consequences for those states when coronavirus lockdown measures began lifting.

Will the shutdown in NC lead to more “deaths of despair” than deaths from COVID-19?
While I am concerned for the health of people who are at risk of serious illness and death from COVID-19, I ask you to also consider the serious injury being caused by the quarantine in North Carolina where fewer than 530 people have died from COVID-19 (as of May 8, 2020).
Historically, “deaths of despair” caused by increases in the unemployment rate, have been shown to far overshadow the predicted mortality rates from COVID-19 models. In an ongoing study, beginning in the 1940s, data consistently shows that a 1% increase in extended unemployment correlates to an increase in our nation's mortality rate by approximately 58,000 people per point. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for March of this year is 4.4% with the possibility of it rising past 30% in the next quarter. Roughly 25% of small businesses have already closed their doors in NC and more will continue to do so even after the quarantine ends. The permanent loss of jobs from closed businesses will lengthen the time people remain out of work, pushing unemployment numbers higher for a longer period of time.
There are factors not being considered in the drastic measures to contain the virus and "flatten the curve.” Violence at home is on the rise with victims trapped with their abusers due to stay-at-home orders. More children are calling the National Sexual Assault Hotline with reports of abuse that is escalating in frequency and severity. Suicide rates are predicted to rise dramatically due to the direct correlation between unemployment rates and suicide. Students requiring specialized school services and therapies are not being served and are impacted both in the short and long term.
With lost taxes due to shuttered businesses, public health programs suffer, impacting health services in the community. Young adults entering a poor job market for the first time are at risk for negative lifetime outcomes including unhealthier, shorter lives. All of these factors, and many others, must be considered when assessing the impact of wide spread shutdowns.
What can be done to save lives? We can open the economy back up to healthy people while protecting the vulnerable. Many highly respected professionals advocate for an approach similar to Sweden’s model, with resources directed to those most at risk from complications from COVID-19, including the elderly and immune compromised. By advocating for self-quarantine of high-risk categories, we protect the truly vulnerable. This allows low risk, healthy children and adults to get back to school and their jobs preventing vast segments of the economy from collapsing. Our current approach all but ensures death to many through inadequate health care, lack of resources, child abuse, domestic abuse, suicide, and depression. Let’s reduce deaths of despair while addressing management of the virus. There is a solution.

NC: Phase 1.5? Governor Roy Reluctant to Restore Freedoms, Confusing Order Draws Immediate Criticism

Well, Governor Roy Cooper may have announced that North Carolina would move into Phase 2 of his tentative reopening plan, but the actual details look more like the state will be stuck in Phase 1.5 for five weeks.
Restaurants can open at 50 percent capacity and under a pile of social distancing and sanitizing rules, but bars will not be allowed to open. Salons will again be allowed to serve customers at 50 percent capacity, but gyms are not allowed to open. Your kid can now attend day care or even go off to summer camp, but cannot go to school.
Gatherings are still limited to 10 people, unless you’re in a Wal-Mart, or a reopened restaurant, or an education facility, or a church, or a house with a big family for that matter.

Everytown Survey Indicates Support for Gun Control Has Surged During Pandemic
Support for gun control has surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new national survey commissioned by Everytown for Gun Safety, the gun-control organization largely funded by failed 2020 presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg.
Everytown tapped the pollsters at Global Strategy Group last month to ask 1,500 Americans whether gun control was “more important” now than it was before the outbreak.

Rand Paul: Fauci’s Policies ‘Emasculated The Medical Care System And Ruined The Economy’
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) continued his ongoing spar with Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in a USA Today op-ed he co-wrote with Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), blasting Fauci’s alleged doom and gloom policies for destroying the American economy and countless lives.
Though Paul and Biggs respect Dr. Fauci’s expertise on infectious diseases and his medial opinions, the pair were severely critical of Fauci for crafting his entire COVID-19 strategy off of flimsy models that turned out to be false, such as the U.K. Imperial College model from disgraced professor Neil Ferguson that warned of 2.2 million deaths in the United States with no mitigation.
