Less Than Five Miles

The life of a man is something that runs deep in all history.

Before the war on gender roles, man and woman had a clear, defined boundary that all recognized and respected. Man was the provider, and woman, the nurturer and homemaker. A story and role as old as time.

But, what of the physical boundaries of a man?

My Great Grandfather was born in Vendor, Arkansas, on May 4th, 1919. He would remain there his entire life, with few exceptions.

Wayne, as he came to be known, grew up in Vendor in the early part of the 20th century, with the normal Ozark way of living; he learned to cut wood and make a living as his fathers did before him. It’s not that Wayne’s story is atypical, but it’s the closest one I have a personal connection to that holds true to an age old lifestyle and tradition that most have forgotten or purposefully overlook.

Wayne was born at home. Vendor was his home. He grew up near Big Creek at his parent’s house and eventually married only about a mile from their front porch, to a sweet young girl named Hilpie Edna Middleton. They were married at the Reverend Cain Boling’s home only about a mile from Wayne’s place of birth at Vendor, near the current junction of Highway 374 and McElroy Gap Road. The chimney still stands to this day. That was on December 20th, 1936.

After their marriage they moved across the county road to the top of what is now called ‘Holt Hill’ by locals and settled in what would eventually (in my lifetime) become the garden spot at my Great Grandparents’ home. They lived in a rough cut log home and continued to live there while my Great Grandfather built what would become their permanent home. I was told stories of his sitting up late at night, hand carving the wood flooring with his pocket knife, and hand fitting them together, slowly, yet surely, getting it done.

Patience was not only a virtue, but a way of life with Wayne. He had no reason to hurry. He had his worries and tasks, like any man of his day, but he had a home and a family now. Five children, three boys and two girls, were born to him & Edna (as she would refuse to be referred to as ‘Hilpie’.)

He lived in the house that he finished in 1956 on the top of the hill in Vendor. He would reside there until his death. He was there fourteen years after it’s completion, when his father died. He saw him buried in Smith Cemetery, only about a mile distant.

Wayne continued his life; raising his children and enjoying his grandchildren, until tragedy struck on December 20th, 1968.

His eldest son, Stanley Wayne Holt, and two of his cousins were out on a Friday evening, in a 1961 Ford Starliner, when some unforeseen circumstance landed it upside down in Big Creek, which wound it’s way through Vendor, and provided the lifeblood for Wayne and his family. However, this night it would not be a giving force, but a taking one.

Wayne found the car washed up against the bank of Big Creek, driver’s side up, with some men coming back from a coon hunt that night. It was, sadly, too late for the three in the car. A book could be filled with the rumors, intrigue, and theories on what happened to land them there, but the fact of it is, they died there in Big Creek, not a mile from home.

They buried Stanley in the Smith Cemetery, not two miles from where he died.

Wayne was a different man in some respects after that, always telling his family to be careful on the roads because ‘it was so dangerous.’ He was so right.

Wayne grew old in the shade of the trees on that hilltop in Vendor. He lost a lot of friends, but gained a lot of new family, in the way of births and marriages. The true meaning of life was something he understood and saw in his lifetime. He saw his lineage continue through his sons, and his daughters both bore fruit and had beautiful children whom he loved dearly. Sundays were an eventful time, with him personally calling anyone who didn’t show up for ‘Sunday dinner’ and making sure they were all safe.

He spent his latter days in the large living room, walking that large, hand fitted floor, with a little bit slower gait. He held his grandchildren there, and one special Christmas, opened a ventilated box that contained what would be his last dog ; a blue heeler he appropriately named ‘Blue.’ This dog would outlive him by several years and become a watchful companion to Edna as she aged.

Wayne never cared much for ‘town’, whether it be the small hub of Jasper, or the larger one of Harrison. His grandkids laughed at how you could bribe him into going to town by giving him an RC and a pack of M&Ms. They claimed he would sit there all day if you did just that! However, town was too far from Wayne’s home, and he was never comfortable there.

Wayne died in Harrison, Arkansas on June 19th, 1998, after a valiant battle with cancer, far from his home. It was about thirty miles away.

People today, in an age of cheap and easy transportation, too often forget the importance of place; especially the place where one was raised. The place where one lived, loved, and lost. My Great Grandfather lived a life once common, now, sadly, atypical. The moments of his life, from his birth, marriage, home and burial, all encompass less than five square miles.

To be sure, he spent time out of that area, working and going to ‘town.’ But these were not the things that defined his life. He lived where he died; a monument to a tradition that we should all try and adhere to, if possible. Without, probably, even thinking of such a thing, my Great Grandfather embodied the mountaineer spirit; he was raised, married, and lived within earshot of his close kin. He saw them out of this world and was saw out of this world, in kind, by his own.

He rests in his overalls within a mile of his birthplace, the home he built, and where he was married, all three.

There is a deep lesson here for those of us who are willing to listen.

Rest in peace, Popaw.

God bless you and God bless the South.

 William Brock,

In January 1907, on the hundredth anniversary of Robert E. Lee’s birth, Charles Francis Adams gave a lecture at Washington and Lee University on Lee’s legacy. Adams, as a scion of one of the oldest Northern political dynasties in America and a staunch Unionist during the War, was uniquely positioned to deliver such a speech. He considered Lee to be the embodiment of the American experience, a true tragic hero trampled by the might of arms but never destroyed in spirit, a man whose principled defense of reconciliation proved to be the healing balm for the wounds of Reconstruction. His gentlemanly example of tolerance and patience in a time of vengeance was a North Star for both sections still seething from four years of bloodletting. Just as Adams and Jefferson forged the bonds of independence in 1776, Massachusetts and Virginia were once again unified in a time of healing.

In the same month, Virginian Thomas Nelson Page published an article in the South Atlantic Quarterly defending Lee’s character and reputation. He thought that in the future, all Americans would come to revere Lee as the personification of the American character—loyal, virtuous, honest—and would erect a monument in Washington D.C. to “it’s greatest soldier and loftiest citizen.” At the time, Page was one of the most respected writers in America, and his stirring evaluation of Lee’s life and career, ultimately published as part of a full biography titled Robert E. Lee: A Southerner in 1909, was widely read and celebrated by the American public at large. Lee, as much as Lincoln, had become the glue of the new American nation.

Las Vegas Oddsmakers are Never Wrong!

 Via 4Branch

Interesting take on what happened on 11-3-& 11-4.

I’ve been a Las Vegas oddsmaker and sports gaming expert for four decades-long before I became known as a nationally syndicated conservative talk show host. I understand odds and gambling in a way that no other conservative media personality, host, or politician in this country could.

And I can tell you something is very wrong with this presidential election. It reminds me of a fixed football game. Remember the famous fixed 1978 game between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants quarterback handed the ball off. The running back didn’t want it. It fell on the ground. Herm Edwards of the Eagles picked it up and ran it into the end zone with seconds left for a last second victory. Every bettor in the world knows that game was fixed. It doesn’t matter if you can prove it. We all know.

Gamblers also feel the same way about this presidential election. This presidential election is rancid. It feels as fixed as that Giants-Eagles NFL football game. Let me give you the details of this election- from a gambler’s perspective.

Trump entered the night a 2 to 1 underdog. As soon as the polls started to close, and the picture became clear, Trump’s odds quickly moved to even money. Then Trump became the slight favorite. Then a moderate favorite. Then a 2-to-1 favorite. Then 3 to 1. 4 to 1. 5 to 1. 6 to 1. 7 to 1. Finally, Trump moved to 8 to 1 favorite.

Lin Wood: Trump Will Be Inaugurated Based on Election Fraud in Dominion Machines & Former Dem Gov. Rod Blagojevich: “I know how they operate. The evidence will be there.”

In an interview with The John Fredericks Show, Wood shared details of his Sunday night court victory. Initially, the court impounded all Dominion machines throughout Georgia. The court has since changed its order to reflect that only three counties would have their machines impounded.

“Dominion originated in Venezuela. It’s a Canadian company. It’s servers were used in Barcelona and in Frankfurt. There’s no question that there will be overwhelming evidence that foreign countries, including China were involved in interfering with our elections.”

Wood stated that President Donald Trump knows what he is doing in these legal battles against the current election results. He claimed that Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and members of the media were involved in conspiring to interfere with the election results.

Lin Wood and WTPC call for martial law to hold new election

Martial law doesn't mean what you think it means. There is nothing in military training or organization that gives them the capability to conduct a free and fair election or to help one happen. Nothing. The vast majority of military officers are leftist sympathizers as are most junior enlisted people, just like their age groups in the civil society. The outcomes are predictable. Working for Trump doesn't imply any loyalty to Trump. Just ask Gen "Mad dog" Mattis. They are as likely to refuse orders as to obey them.

The right answer is for spineless legislators to assert their authority in states where the election is too muddled to determine a winner and select the electors from their state. Fat chance.

Alternate right answer is for the spineless SCOTUS to invalidate millions of votes, and decree that those state re-certify the winner based on the new tabulations. Fat chance.

Sadly, it looks like we are going to get a Biden Presidency despite massive election fraud. And the result of that is rewarding massive voter fraud to the point of ensuring no Republican will even win a contested race again, not even milquetoast Republicans and RINOs.

But really, this was coming anyway. There is only one Trump. The Republican party has no back bench of Trumps to take his place. At most, Trump would buy us another 4 years before this happened.

Decorated 3-star general calls on Trump to ‘honor your oath of office’ and protect America from ‘treasonous’ enemies within

McInerney lays out strategy to defeat deep-state coup plotters

Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney [U.S. Air Force Retired] said in a no-holds-barred interview that he doesn’t believe the courts are likely to come through for President Trump.

Despite massive amounts of evidence of widespread irregularities, many judges appear either unable or unwilling to sort through allegations of rigged voting machines and dozens of affidavits from eyewitnesses to ballot stuffing, denial of Republican poll watchers from observing the process, evidence of more votes cast in hundreds of precincts than were registered to vote, and a host of other irregularities.

The general placed the burden squarely on President Trump to use the emergency powers at his disposal and put down what he described as a coup d’état in progress.

Hey Brock
Hope this finds you well. After seeing this "news" story
I can't forget just how far and wide the "swamp" really is.

William Barr is and has been nothing but a "creature " of the swamp. The second article explains that view point.

Lin Wood and WTPC call for martial law to hold new election

Georgia attorney Lin Wood, who’s been involved in long-shot legal efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, urged President Donald Trump to declare martial law.

Wood, an attorney for Kenosha gunman Kyle Rittenhouse who signed on to the 104-page “Kraken” lawsuit filed by former Trump attorney Sidney Powell, called for draconian measures to prevent the election from being certified for Joe Biden.

“Good morning,” Wood tweeted. “Our country is headed to civil war. A war created by 3rd party bad actors for their benefit – not for We The People.”

Judge Reapproves Emergency Order Blocking Georgia From Wiping or Resetting Voting Machines & Georgia Secretary Of State Opens 250 Investigations Into ‘Credible Claims Of Illegal Voting’

Judge Reapproves Emergency Order Blocking Georgia From Wiping or Resetting Voting Machines

When the poll worker asked if the reset will wipe the forensic info from the machines, the manager said that “Atlanta already did it.”

The federal judge overseeing high profile attorney Sidney Powell’s election lawsuit in Georgia issued a temporary restraining order late Sunday night, declaring that election officials were barred from wiping or altering Dominion voting machines used in the November election.

The emergency order was the third issued in so many hours over Powell’s lawsuit seeking an emergency order to see “voting machines be seized and impounded immediately for forensic audit by plaintiffs’ experts.”
