South Carolina Declares The Causes Of Secession
In his “Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina,” Christopher Memminger revisits the original American concept of self-government and restated that whenever any “form of government becomes destructive of the ends for which it was established, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government.” Note that though reference is made below to “anti-slavery” feeling in the North, it must be remembered that radical Republican doctrine held that African slavery must be kept within the borders of the South, not that the slaves must be freed. Republicans were a white supremacy party and the territories were for white settlers alone.
Well you have a point. You overstated it, but clearly you have a point. Many Republicans wanted the west for whites. Very true. Many others wanted blacks freed, but sent anywhere else. You are right.
ReplyDeleteBut the slave owners were white supremisist too -- only they thought God told them to enslave blacks.
And they thought God told them it was okay to torture blacks. See the Southern best seller - SLAVERY ORDAINED BY GOD. Not only was slavery okay, the TORTURE of slave women was okay.
The same scriptures that said you should enslave, said slave women owe their master sexual obedience. You think Robert E Lee and every slave owner didn't know that?
Who do you think was fathering all these white looking babies, to mullato mothers, at Lee's plantation? Casper the White Ghost?
You should read the full quotes, the full speeches, and try to learn what was really going on.
