HSLDA: Legal Assistant Job Opening
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:
The Home School Legal Defense Association has an opening for a legal
assistant to work with member families in 10 different states in
defending their right to educate their children at home. HSLDA is
looking to hire someone for this position immediately.
The position requires strong verbal and written communication skills,
a strong work ethic, a professional and compassionate phone manner, a
servant-oriented attitude and a passion for homeschooling. The
candidate must be able to diligently and independently manage multiple
tasks in what can be a fast-paced position. The position offers a
starting salary between $26,000-$32,000 and a generous benefits
package in a caring and faith-oriented environment. A two-year job
commitment will be requested.
Candidates should have at least one of the following:
> Bachelor's degree
> One year or more of law school
> Paralegal or legal assistant training or experience
Specific responsibilities will include:
> Assist HSLDA Staff Attorney Thomas (Tj) Schmidt in answering
inquiries regarding homeschooling and related issues;
> Research and analyze law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial
decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes,
and prepares and updates written summaries accordingly.
> Act as initial point of contact for member queries and requests for
legal assistance; gather relevant facts from members and provides
assistance and advice based on applicable laws, regulations, legal
precedent and office policy.
> Find and monitor new legislation of interest in multiple active
legislatures, contacting sponsors, committee members, and state
leaders to ensure accurate assessment of legislative status; use web
content management platform and composes written alerts to update
members as necessary.
> Perform other clerical duties such as scheduling appointments,
transcribing dictation, preparing routine correspondence, and reading
and routing incoming mail.
> File correspondence and legal documents in office filing system,
both in written and electronic format.
HSLDA's national office is located in Purcellville, Virginia in
central Loudoun County on the campus of Patrick Henry College. Only 90
minutes west of Washington, D.C., Purcellville provides a convenient
access point to the D.C. Metro area, northern Virginia, Maryland, and
West Virginia. Recreational opportunities abound nearby--Blue Ridge
Mountains, Appalachian Trail, W&OD Bike Trail, Shenandoah River and
Potomac River.
