Close to 40 years have passed since filmmaker Roman Polanski pled guilty to the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl, whom he drugged and sodomized, before fleeing to Europe rather than submitting to jail time. And yet Hollywood and the European film industry have continued to support and celebrate him and his work.
On top of previously
awarding him an Oscar for Best Director in 2003, the Cannes Film
Festival has announced it will welcome him onto the red carpet next
month to celebrate his most recent film D’après une histoire vraie (Based on a True Story).
The organizers of the most famous film festival in the world will do
this knowing fully well that Polanski has been a fugitive of the United
States since 1978.
