My Black, North Carolina Kinfolk
9/17/2005
HERE.
My great, great Grandfather, Bartholomew Figures Moore of Raleigh, "The Father of the Bar" of North Carolina, freed all his slaves before The War Between the States. His son, George, enlisted at the beginning, then was captured, and sent to Elmira, "The Death Camp of the North." George survived, but was broken in health for the rest of his life. Below is B.F. Moore's namesake, Isaac B.F. Moore looking quite the Dapper Dan!
The following is the graveside of the "Beloved Master Servant" of my great, great Grandfather, Joseph John Pippen. This is located beside Joseph John Pippen's house outside of Tarboro, where I live. Washington Pippen stayed after the war, and his descendants live across the field from me. We visit often
Below, the great, great granddaughters of Washington Pippen taken at the 2004 Pippen Family Reunion. From left to right, Cousins Juanita, Cora and Berlena.
The family line of my great, great Grandfather, John Quincy Adams Leach of Pittsboro, has the most documented interaction with family blacks. His son, John Pelopidus Leach, went off to war in 1863 after one of his sisters was born. During this time frame, a group of Confederate Cavalry came to the plantation to water their horses. An officer approached the young Mammy who was sitting on the porch rocking a child only a few days old. When the gentleman asked the name of the baby, Mammy exclaimed "She ain't been named yet!" The officer replied, "Well, name her Dixie!" So was named Dixie Washington Leach, my great Aunt.
John Pelopidus Leach surrendered at Appomattox, and with his black friend and companion, Needham Leach, walked home to Pittsboro, crossing the Haw River at Byrnum's Mill in a bateau. There is no male in the 1860 slave schedule that matches the age of Needham, and I have often wondered if he was given freedom as a gift to his loyal parents or possibly kin. He was the Body Servant of John's brother, 1st Lt. George Thomas Leach, and George's Father would have only sent a trusted individual off to war with his eldest son, not a slave he had recently acquired. Needham is mentioned in letters home when he travels to Pittsboro to bring food back to the brothers in the Petersburg lines. John Quincy Adams Leach was a signer at Needham's marriage.
This picture shows three of my great aunt's from left to right, Mabel, Kate and Lucy with their playmate, Bob, around 1880. Many of the black and white Leach's had/have similar family names as listed in this article.
Below is a picture showing five generations born and bred at Mosby Hall in Littleton, the home of John Pelopidus Leach after the war. From right to left, Uncle Essex, Aunt Emily, Aunt Agnes, and Aunt Mabel with her child whose name I do not know. This was probably taken around 1900. Notice the Confederate Great Coat that Aunt Mabel is wearing. Uncle Essex was born a slave, and lived in "Person's Ordinary" on Mosby Hall Plantation where he was a stage coach driver. The Ordinary has since been moved within the Littleton city limits.
In 1907, my Mother was born and the following shows Aunt Emily holding her. Aunt Emily was also Mammy to my Grandmother, Sally Moore Leach Pippen, and my Aunt Mary Powell Pippen.
The same year Dixie Washington Leach took black and white photographs, then hand colored and printed them as postcards. Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the first individual below. The second one shows Dixie Washington Leach's Mammy. The last one shows Mammy, and great, Aunt Dixie. Great Aunt Dixie would have been 44 and Mammy was probably between 62 and 66.
In 1914, John Pelopidus Leach died, and the monument below was erected to him in Littleton. It depicts two hands shaking, one black and one white, with the inscription, "This Is What He Meant, All Men Up Erected By His Colored Friends." Private/Captain/Colonel/Judge Leach donated the land for the Enon Baptist Church in Littleton, and was generous to the poor and needy throughout his life.
This is the great, great, great granddaughter of Needham Leach, Aunt Angela, holding my daughter Dixie, the namesake of Dixie Washington Leach. Great Aunt Dixie also had another namesake who recently died in Pittsboro, Angela's aunt. Angela's Aunt Dixie, in turn, has a namesake, her Cousin Dixie, in Pittsboro.

When our detractors mention that they don't comprehend the way we feel, perhaps they might better understand if we gave them these few lines from Faulkner.
"For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it is the instant when it is still not yet two o'clock on that July afternoon in 1863, the brigades are in position behind the rail fence, the guns are laid and ready in the woods and the furled flags are already loosened to break out and Pickett himself with his long oiled ringlets and his hat in one hand and his sword in the other looking up the hill waiting for Longstreet to give the word and it's all in the balance, it hasn't happened yet, it hasn't even begun yet, it not only hasn't begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armistead and Wilcox look grave yet it's going to begin, we all know that, we have come to far with too much at stake and that moment doesn't need even a fourteen year old boy to think this time. Maybe this time with all this much to lose and all this much to gain: Pennsylvania, Maryland, the world, the golden dome of Washington itself to crown with desperate and unbelievable victory the desperate gamble, the cast made two years ago......"

Surviving Radioactive Fallout And Radiation Contamination From Iran Or North Korea
"This guide 'When An ill Wind Blows From Afar! (Like from Iran or North Korea!)' deals specifically with radioactive fallout that originated from afar, like a Chernobyl in the past, or Iran in the future that's had its nuclear facilities bombed, releasing radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, or a North Korea gone mad, etc.
This guide provides panic dispelling knowledge so people downwind can more promptly initiate appropriate protective actions, as required."

HERE'S OUR SENATE WHIP COUNT OF DREAM AMNESTY VOTE
| ||||
| ||||
Yes, we really do need more phone calls before Thanksgiving. See the list below of the Senators who most need to hear from you because their votes are still up for grabs. HERE'S OUR SENATE WHIP COUNT OF DREAM AMNESTY VOTE SEE SENATORS WHO MOST NEED PHONE CALLS TODAY Your outpouring of phone calls and faxes these past 12 days has pushed the expected NO votes to the point that we think if the vote were held today that we'd have the 41 votes needed to kill DREAM with a fillibuster. Hooray for you! But the opposition is changing the bill by softening some of its most egregious aspects. You have done such a good job of pointing out loopholes that the amnesty sponsors have introduced new versions of DREAM that:
But we don't yet know how many of the Senators who currently are whipped as being NO votes -- as well as "Unannounced" Senators -- might switch to YES if the DREAM sponsors keep narrowing the amnesty. The other side is using its vast war chest of funds to pay for special phoning campaigns pushing YES votes. We desperately need your phone calls today. Thanks. (Remember that the Senators are back home this week, so make the phone calls to their staffers back in the home state offices.) To get talking points for your own Senators and to report what you hear back to us, be sure to go to your NumbersUSA Action Board and look at your Phone Action Notes. ACTION 1 -- 'Undecideds' are the priority We need at least 4 of these 14 to vote NO. (The amnesty folks have a steeper hill to climb and need 11 of the 14 to vote YES.) But because there are a few wish-washy Senators among our NO list, we should aim to get at least 6 of these Undecideds. Please help. Although many of these seem like they are leaning NO or ought to be a NO vote, there has to be a reason why they have chosen to remain publicly Undecided. The reason is unlikely to be a good one. Most of these Undecided Senators are from small to medium sized states. If you live in the region of any of them, please call. ALASKA Sen. Lisa Murkowski She goes back and forth on amnesties. Did her scare in almost losing her seat make her a little more attentive on this kind of thing? Too often in the past, she has seemed to trade her vote FOR open borders to get some kind of pork barrel for the state. Will she be different this time? Anchorage: 907-271-3735 Fairbanks: 907-456-0233 Ketchikan: 907-225-6880 Wasilla: 907-376-7665 Kenai: 907-283-5808 KANSAS Sen. Sam Brownback He voted YES on the DREAM amnesty back in 2007. But he remains uncommited this time in public. He was just elected governor. Help him see that a YES vote now would immediately hurt his approval ratings. Topeka: 785-233-2503 Wichita: 316-264-8066 Overland Park: 913-492-6378 Garden City: 620-275-1124 Pittsburg: 620-231-6040 LOUISIANA Sen. Mary Landrieu She has generally voted with US, especially as she faced tough re-election in 2008. She falsely was reported last week as coming out as a YES. But why is she remaining Uncommitted? New Orleans: 504-589-2427 Baton Rouge: 225-389-0395 Shreveport: 318-676-3085 Lake Charles: 337-436-6650 MAINE Sen. Susan Collins She voted YES in 2007. But her statements this week lean toward NO. You have driven her to the brink of a good decision; help her do it right. Portland: 207-780-3575 Augusta: 207-622-8414 Bangor: 207-945-0417 Lewiston: 207-784-6969 Caribou: 207-493-7873 Biddeford: 207-283-1101 Sen. Olympia Snowe She voted YES in 2007. But she is up for re-election in 2012. She has seen some other ensconced high-seniority Republicans nearly lose or lose to Primary challengers this year. A vote for amnesty now could make her a real target. It is a good sign that she hasn't declared herself a YES yet. Portland: 207-874-0883 Augusta: 207-622-8292 Bangor: 207-945-0432 Auburn: 207-786-2451 Biddeford: 207-282-4144 Presque Isle: 207-764-5124 MICHIGAN Sen. Debbie Stabenow When she was coming up for re-election in 2006, she voted with us. But after winning, she voted YES on the DREAM Amnesty in 2007. Now, she is a Democrat coming up for another election in 2012 after big Republican gains in Michigan in the 2010 election. She is obviously conflicted and afraid to reveal either way. How does she tell Michigan's unemployed in 2012 that she voted to give millions more work permits to illegal aliens? Detroit: 313-961-4330 Grand Rapids: 616-975-0052 East Lansing: 517-203-1760 Traverse City: 231-929-1031 Flint: 810-720-4172 Marquette: 906-228-8756 MISSOURI Sen. Claire McCaskill She voted NO in 2007 and has been one of the more reliable pro-enforcement votes among Democrats. Missouri swung strong toward Republicans in the 2010 elections. So, why is she holding back on announcingt a NO now? She was one of the original co-sponsors of Harry Reid's placeholder amnesty bill in winter of 2009. She is very close to Pres. Obama. She is conflicted. Like others on this Undecided list, she probably hopes the vote doesn't occur so she doesn't have to anger either side of the issue. He has just come out with a statement indicating he is leaning NO, but it is ambiguous. Omaha: 402-391-3411 Lincoln: 402-441-4600 NORTH CAROLINA Sen. Byron Dorgan Our most reliable Democrat who voted NO last time. But he is retiring and perhaps has different senses of obligation. Why hasn't he clearly put himself in the NO column this time? Fargo: 701-239-5389 Bismarck: 701-250-4618 Minot: 701-852-0703 SOUTH CAROLINA Sen. Lindsey Graham One of the most pro-amnesty Republicans. Joe Manchin This Democrat is replacing the always-anti-amnesty Sen. Byrd. Manchin's statements indicate he is leaning NO. Time to get a commitment to what thre people of his state overwhelmingly want. Washington, D.C.: 202-224-3954 ACTION 2 -- Up for re-election in 2012 but still say they'll vote YES on amnesty (you can change some of these) With the anti-incumbent mood widely expected to continue through 2012, these Senators need to be reminded what a great liability a pro-amnesty vote will be in their next election. At the least, they need to see that there is political pain to suffer for voting to give out millions of work permits to illegal aliens. We especially need help from neighbors to get the calls up for the small states of Delaware, Rhode Island and Vermont. CALIFORNIA Sen. Gun Owners of America has two major goals in 2012:
First -- make Barack Obama a one-term President.
Second -- make Harry Reid the minority leader in the Senate.
I traveled to Bozeman, Montana on Saturday, November 13th to deliver the Gun Owners of America endorsement for Steve Daines for United States Senate to defeat John Tester in 2012.
Remembering that the 13th was less than two weeks after the November 2nd Election, a time when most people were worn out and resting from the hard work of the last few months, I was blown away by the crowd in attendance.
There were at least 200-300 people in the room on that Saturday morning to listen to Steve Daines give his announcement speech... and he didn't disappoint them.
In a speech that highlighted the roots of his family (5-generations) who came to America and settled in Montana, he also stressed saving our economy, cutting taxes, putting the federal government on a major diet and PROTECTING THE SECOND AMENDMENT.
Music to my ears.
Folks, this guy is the real deal.
After Daines gave his announcement, it was my turn to give the Gun Owners of America endorsement, which was easy since I had the chance to spend time with and to learn about Steve over the past few months.
And it was easy since he is running to unseat Senator John Tester, who has an "F" rating from GOA.
Tester is the poster boy for voting pro-gun on one item and then stabbing pro-gunners in the back and voting anti-gun on the next.
Some examples:
Tester voted to confirm anti-gun leftists Sonya Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court for many years to come.
Tester voted not once, but twice, for the so-called "Disclose Act," which was a blatant attempt by sitting members of Congress to stop groups like Gun Owners of America from giving the voting records of elected officials around election time. This legislation was so blatantly political that it even gave 'exemptions' to some groups to campaign while trying to stop others from doing anything!
Tester voted to confirm radical anti-gun U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who, as you will recall, was one of the key figures in the Clinton White House in pushing the ban on semi-automatic firearms. Today, Holder advocates the reinstatement of the Clinton gun ban.
Senator Tester voted for Obama-appointed "regulatory Czar" Cass Sunstein, who believes hunting is outdated and should be stopped and that animals should have legal representation against humans in court.
Senator Tester -- are you listening? Gun Owners of America won't let our members and the pro-gun voters of Montana and America forget how you voted on these key issues before you face the Montana electorate in 2012.
I hope every American and every organization that believes in the Constitution of the United States, and the crucial need to protect it, has the same chance I've had to get to know Steve Daines in the very near future.
If they do, I guarantee you that he will have the money and the volunteer workforce to get the job done in 2012 and he will be elected Montana's next United States Senator.
You can bet that Gun Owners of America and our members will do all we can to help.

Senate Holds Hearing on CEDAW
November 22, 2010
Melanie Palazzo
Congressional Action Program Director
A sharp whistle echoed through the halls of the U.S. Senate Office Building. “I need everyone to get to one side of the hall and lower your voices—this is a place of business!” bellowed a Capitol Police officer. The seemingly endless line of women wearing pink “Ratify CEDAW” stickers momentarily quieted as they edged near the wall.
The commotion was due to a treaty called CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women) drafted 31 years ago by the United Nations. It was signed by President Carter but never ratified by the Senate—much to the chagrin of internationalist and liberal feminist groups. To change this 30-year-old hold, the CEDAW2010 campaign was born in order to renew pressure on the Senate.
So, the dust was blown off the treaty and a hearing was scheduled in the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law on Thursday, November 18, 2010. When HSLDA learned this, we immediately went on the offense, sending action emails to our membership urging them to tell their Senators to oppose this treaty.
HSLDA opposes CEDAW because of numerous sections in the treaty that require nations which have ratified it to regulate curriculum and education methods in order to eliminate gender bias. We believe that these sections would lead to federal regulation of homeschooling. You can read more about our concerns online.
Homeschoolers across the nation heeded the call to action. Senator Richard Durbin (IL), chair of the subcommittee, received so many calls that his staff began to try to get our callers to contact other offices. When the calls did not cease, the senator’s staff started to answer the phone asking, “Are you calling to oppose CEDAW?”
Will Estrada, HSLDA’s director of Federal Relations, visited the office of every senator on the subcommittee the day of the hearing. Upon entering each office, he was greeted with the sound of ringing phones—every call was from homeschoolers across the nation urging opposition to CEDAW. When he mentioned to staff members that they may have received a few calls about CEDAW, they wearily laughed and retorted, “That’s an understatement.” After receiving dozens of phone calls, staff for Senator Lindsey Graham (SC) urgently notified HSLDA that the senator opposed CEDAW. Senator Graham previously had no stated position.
While we were incredibly effective in letting our voices be heard, the other side was quite vocal as well. Pink “Ratify CEDAW” stickers were everywhere the day of the hearing, and the line to get in the hearing room stretched down several halls, sending Senate employees scrambling to provide an overflow room.
During the hearing, the two panels of witnesses were full of pro-CEDAW individuals from the U.S. State Department and U.S. Justice Department, Hollywood, Afghanistan, and liberal feminist groups. Steve Groves, from The Heritage Foundation, had the lone opinion that CEDAW was dangerous to the freedom of U.S. citizens.
As the hearing began, each witness assured Senator Durbin—the sole senator at the hearing—that the treaty would not affect U.S. law. They said the United States had to ratify the treaty to take the lead in women’s rights. When it was Mr. Groves’ turn, he alone brought up the fact that the United States already leads the world in advocating for human rights and the protection of women and girls with the example of its laws and culture, and stated that it is unnecessary for the United States to ratify this treaty. Furthermore, he explained that CEDAW would endanger America’s national interests.
In a humorous exchange, Mr. Groves pointed out that the UN CEDAW Committee has made shocking recommendations to nations which ratified CEDAW, for example, suggesting Belarus ban Mother’s Day and that Guinea de-criminalize prostitution.
Senator Durbin responded by asking, “and did Belarus ban Mother’s Day?” Mr. Groves responded, “No, I do not believe any country banned Mother’s Day.” The room erupted in laughter, but the point was made—most nations ignore CEDAW, but with our activist courts, ratification of CEDAW may not be a laughing matter in the United States.
For the time being, we are confident that the U.S. Senate heard our message of opposition to CEDAW loud and clear. No further hearings or votes on CEDAW are scheduled. We are grateful for each and every family who called in opposition to CEDAW. However, CEDAW is not going away. Its activists will continue to strategize and push for its ratification. We must be equally alert, unified, and vocal.
HSLDA will continue to monitor CEDAW and provide action updates as needed.

The fact that even Democrats are turning on President Barack Obama contributed to an approval plunge to 39 percent, his lowest ever, according to a Zogby Poll that prompted John Zogby to describe the result as a “perilous position.”
