Cop facing DUI charge awarded disability

Via Knuckledraggin' My Life Away

Bryan Pece

Figures.

Carol Stream Police Sgt. Bryan Pece, who faces charges of driving under the influence after an off-duty traffic accident last May 5 that left him unable to return to work, has been awarded non-duty related disability leave.

The Carol Stream Police Pension Fund Board voted unanimously Thursday to award monthly disability payments of $4,507.17 to Pece. Pece applied for the disability leave in May, the day after authorities said he was drunk when his vehicle rear-ended an SUV at the intersection of Army Trail and County Farm roads in Hanover Park.

Montana Navy SEAL frontrunner in house race labels Hillary 'the Antichrist'

It’s bound to become the defining moment in a race for Montana’s open seat in the House of Representatives.

Will it be a Todd Akin moment? Or will retired Navy SEAL Ryan Zinke become a hero for calling Hillary Clinton “the real enemy” and “the Antichrist”?

That’s what happened Monday when Zinke, who is running in a Republican primary to be the standard-bearer to replace Rep. Steve Daines, who is seeking a Senate seat, spoke at a campaign event.

Zinke appeared at the Marina Cay Resort in Bigfork along with Scott McEwen, co-author of “American Sniper,” a book about the life of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, who served four combat missions and earned a reputation as one of the deadliest snipers in the military, with 150 kills, including one from 2,100 yards. Clint Eastwood is making a movie about McEwen’s book.

Zinke had some tough criticism for Barack Obama’s administration.

Junior jihad: Shootin an AK-47, the four-year-old Al Qaeda fighter in Syria

Yet this youngster, believed to be just four years old, is one of the latest ‘cub jihadists’ recruited for bloody battle in Syria.

He can be seen firing rounds from an automatic assault rifle in a shocking video that has emerged from the war-torn country.

NASCAR Driver Loses Health Coverage & Doctor of 20 Years because of Obamacare

Screen Shot 2014-01-31 at 8.34.37 AM

Yes, NASCAR’s Kenny Shepherd “liked his health insurance and wanted to keep it”, but like 5 million other Americans he is now facing tough (and unwanted) choices.  This is the January 31st statement he has given exclusively to PolitiChicks.tv:
I just got off the phone with the doctor I have seen for more than 20 years and he gave me the bad news that due to Obamacare he can no longer see me. On December 1st I found out my old insurance policy jumped up to $1,000 per month with an $11,000.00 deductible. Today I learned the new insurance I have is not accepted by my doctor. So if I want to continue seeing the doctor I have a 20-year relationship with my only option is to pay him cash.

Destroying Diversity with Uniformity

Writing of the value of American cultural diversity in 1957, author Donald Davidson recognized that it could not flourish “if America was to subjugated to the ideal of uniformity, or to the ideal universe that some one section might generate.”

Destroying Diversity with Uniformity

“Those of us who still believe in the map of the United States know that it marks the residence of some diverse Americans who had better not go unacknowledged.  In Vermont, for instance, are people who are still Yankees; and in Georgia, and elsewhere, there are still Rebels.

I remember talking with a certain Virginian who watched a Vermont sunset with me, one summer evening.  The woods were as snug and precise as a Yankee kitchen . . . The streams were orthodox streams, almost model streams . . . often called “brooks” – a word that for Southerners existed only on the printed page.

The forebears of the Vermont Yankee had once failed to understand how Southerners could be devoted to both slavery and to democracy.  That old failure of understanding did not seem queer, or worth more than a passing sigh, to two Southerners who stood looking at sunset upon a land . . . cut to a discreet Yankee pattern.

But the human geography of America had now become a parti-colored thing, sprawling across the continent in a crazy quilt of provinces, or sections, each with its private notion of a universe.  No longer, as in the sixties, could the Yankee make bold and set up a general pattern for the entire Union.  He had enough to do if he would defend and preserve what was peculiarly his own – his very own, surely, in upper New England.

In such a purpose of preservation these two Southerners at last could make bold to sympathize, even to help if possible.  But preservation could not be achieved without recognizing a principle of diversity in American life.  But how could the principle of diversity be inculcated?

On the negative side, certain false images, the product of legend or propaganda, must somehow be counterbalanced.  To the Virginian I recalled the horror of a good lady from the Middle West, who was motoring from Washington to Richmond.  Mount Vernon was all right, she thought; there the legend was safely frozen.  But beyond, on the road to Richmond, what had become of all the great mansions she had read about, the cotton fields with Negroes caroling, the old gentlemen in goatees and white vests, sipping mint juleps in the shade?

They were not visible. There were only a few scattered shacks and tumbledown barns in miles of impenetrable wilderness that looked for all the world as it must have looked when John Smith first invaded it.   If she could have encountered the legend, the lady would have been content. But not seeing it or knowing how to locate it, she was smitten with a housewifery desire to get at this ragged land with a good broom and whisk it into seemliness.

Other sojourners had been anxious to do a far more drastic tidying up.  The Harlan County visitors, the Scottsboro attorneys, the shock troops of Dayton and Gastonia asked no questions about genius of place.  Wherever they went on their missions of social justice, they carried with them a legend of the future, more dangerously abstract than the legend of the past, and sternly demanded that the local arrangements be made to correspond with it, at whatever cost.

And yet the only America that the visitors offered as a model was an overgrown urban America, forever in process of becoming one laboratory experiment after another.”

Kentucky Withdraws from Common Core Assessment Consortium

The state of Kentucky withdrew Friday from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), its testing consortium for the Common Core assessments.

According to Education Week, Gov. Steven Beshear (D), Education Commissioner Terry Holliday, and State Board of Education president Roger Marcum sent a letter Thursday to Mitchell D. Chester, chairman of PARCC’s governing board.

The leaders cite several reasons for their decision, the first being that Kentucky intends to invite bids for proposals for new state assessments, observing that it would be a conflict of interest to be a member of PARCC if the test consortium decided to bid on their project.

‘How many times do we have to go through this?’ Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer rejects amnesty for illegals

Arizona Republican Governor Jan Brewer agrees with Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s prognosis that their party will suffer if it pursues amnesty for illegal immigrants, asking, “How many times do we have to go through this? The border needs to be secured.”

Brewer spoke with Fox News’ Stuart Varney on Friday about the immigration debate, which has picked up in recent weeks after years of inaction. Rumor has it that Republican leadership will work with the Obama administration to enact a “pathway to citizenship” for the estimated 12 million immigrants here illegally. Some in the party — including Cruz — call this strategy a serious blunder that may jeopardize their hopes for the Senate in the fall.

The Arizona governor agreed. “I think that Senator Cruz is correct,” she said.

At a gathering of the world's top diplomats and defense officials in Munich, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took issue with what he said were "prominent European politicians actually encouraging such actions."

"What does incitement of increasingly violent street protests have to do with promoting democracy?"

Lavrov said. "Why don't we hear condemnations of those who seize and hold government buildings, burn, torch the police, use racist and anti-Semitic and Nazi slogans?"

Black History Month Spotlight: Free Colored Slave Owners

Re-post 2012

Via Bernhard
“There were black masters in every State where slavery existed [including the North], many black Americans of the antebellum period believed that slavery was a viable economic system. In Louisiana, Maryland, South Carolina and Virginia, free blacks owned more than 10,000 slaves, according to the Federal census of 1850. Many of the black masters in the Lower South were large planters who owned scores of slaves and planted large quantities of cotton, rice, and sugar cane.

In 1860, for example, Auguste Donatto, a free colored planter of St. Landry Parish in Louisiana, owned 70 slaves who worked 500 acres of land and produced 100 bales of cotton. About 600 miles to the east…in the county of Sumter, South Carolina, William Ellison, a free colored planter, used the labor of 70 slaves to cultivate 100 bales of cotton in 1861. {in the same State], Robert Michael Collins and Margaret Mitchell Harris used their slaves to till the soil of Santee Plantation and grew 240,000 pounds of rice in 1849.

In 1860, Madame Ciprien Ricard and her son Pierre Ricard , free mulattoes of Ibeville Parish, owned 168 slaves. The joint operation of mother and son used the labor of slaves to produce 515 hogsheads of sugar in 1859. Not all of the black masters were planters, nor were they all from the South. In 1830 the city of New York had eight black slave-owners who owned 17 slaves. The institution of black slave-owning was widespread, stretching as far north as New York and as far south as Florida, extending westward into Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri.

Where did these free black masters come from? Many…were former slaves…emancipated for meritorious military duty, faithful service, saving a life, and other such reasons. Many of the colored slave owners inherited slaves from black relatives as well as white kinsfolk. A few black masters owned slaves in West Africa and transported their slaves to the New World.”
