Some goodies from Ol' Remus
History, is strewn with the wrecks of nations which have gained a little progressiveness at the cost of a great deal of hard manliness, and have thus prepared themselves for destruction as soon as the movements of the world gave a chance for it. Culture is a precious inheritance. immeasurably more difficult to achieve than to destroy, and, once destroyed, almost irretrievable, --Roger Kimball in this article, Future tense, XI: The lessons of culture, at The New Criterion.
Many universities, avid for every dollar of income they can get, have collaborated in the process by grade inflation and the creation of degrees in meaningless subjects. Among the consequences is that a college degree is gradually coming to mean as little to a potential employer as a high school diploma already does.
-- Francis Porretto in this article, Moron's Everywhere, at Bastion of Liberty.
I have trouble accepting the idea that Hitler was a vegetarian. He just didn't seem that pushy.
Very seldom have political upheavals not elevated the very worst to the very highest positions. Moreover, the "very worst" are aware of this, which is why one finds a disproportionate number of the unscrupulous—the liars, the thugs, the embezzlers, and miscellaneous other blackguards—in the strategy councils of left-oriented movements... Note that almost as soon as Barack Hussein Obama took office, he began to elevate the worst of his lieutenants to the highest positions available.
The ritual begins again. But this time, the Republicans are going to fight even harder before surrendering and raising the debt limit just one more time!
Haiti is the second free nation of the Western Hemisphere and the world's first black republic. Yet in 2001 – almost two centuries' freedom notwithstanding – Haiti remains more underdeveloped than much of Africa from which it emerged. Haiti is not merely the poorest country in the hemisphere but one of the poorest anywhere.
Kimberlin Harassment Update: Kimberlin’s Latest Documented Lies Told Under Oath
David Hogberg of Investor’s Business Daily sheds light on the issuance of the warrant for Aaron Walker’s arrest:
I went back to the District Court of Maryland for Montgomery County on Friday to get a copy of the warrant for Walker. I have uploaded it here (addresses and phone numbers are redacted).
The warrant was filed by Kimberlin on Sunday, and from it a few things are now clear that I got wrong in the post from last week. First, Kimberlin claims that Walker violated the second peace order Kimberlin filed against Walker, not the first. Kimberlin filed the second peace order on May 22, and it is “temporarily” in effect until the hearing on May 29th. In it, Kimberlin basically claims that the blog posts Walker wrote between May 22 and May 27 constitute a violation of the peace order (more on that in a bit).
Also, in the blog I wrote that the “court apparently agreed (that Walker had violated the peace order) and Walker was arrested.” That leaves the impression that the judge had Walker arrested. He did not. Rather, the warrant was carried out by a Montgomery County Sheriff, as is clear from the first page of the warrant. The easiest way for a sheriff to arrest someone is to know exactly where he is, and the sheriff obviously knew Walker would be in court that day.
Always trust content from Patterico. As I reported the day of the hearing:
As best as I can tell, the arrest occurred because Brett Kimberlin got a warrant from a judge two days ago, for a criminal charge of violation of a peace order.
Hogberg has performed an invaluable service in obtaining the pack of lies Kimberlin used to get this warrant issued. Read it here:

Intruder shot by Sheffield Lake resident
A man was shot during a break-in at a Sheffield Lake apartment Sunday morning, according to Sheffield Lake police. The resident at an apartment at 5115 Lake Road confronted an intruder in his apartment and the intruder was able to get a hold of a gun inside the apartment, Capt. Tony Campo said.
The intruder and resident struggled over the gun and the resident was able to get a hold of the gun, shooting the intruder several times in the legs, Campo said.
Man, 72, shoots intruder
A 72-year-old man shot an intruder at his home in Holt early Monday morning.
The man told investigators that he was awakened by a 27-year-year old man pounding on his back door at 2 a.m. The younger man knocked him to the ground and forced his way inside when he opened the door, said Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide Unit commander Capt. Loyd Baker. The suspect ran back into the yard when he realized another person was inside the home, Baker said. The resident retrieved a gun and fired a shot at the suspect, Baker said.

Issa: DOJ officials "false and misleading"
The lead House Republican investigating Operation Fast and Furious, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), today said senior Justice Department officials had specific information that their federal agents were using controversial "gunwalking" tactics.
Justice Department officials have consistently denied that was the case. But today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Issa revealed that he has reviewed sealed wiretap applications in the case, which were signed off on the authority of Holder's Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer. Issa wrote Holder "having seen the wiretap applications, we now know that the information coming from the (Justice) Department has been misleading. That must stop."
Issa and others familiar with the wiretap applications say they contain a "remarkable level of detail about these objectionable tactics." That appears contrary to Holder's testimony to Congress on Nov. 8, 2011 when Holder stated, "I'd be surprised if the tactics themselves about gunwalking were actually contained in those, in those [wiretap] applications. I have not seen them, but I would be surprised [if] that were the case." Holder later made a similar statement to Congress on Feb. 2, 2012.
"The wiretap applications obtained by the [House Oversight] Committee show such statements made by senior [Justice] Department officials... to be false and misleading," said Issa's letter. He added the applications "detail specific actions taken by agents in Fast and Furious. This includes conscious decisions not to interdict weapons that agents knew were illegally purchased by smugglers taking weapons to Mexico," also called "gunwalking."

The lawmen fear the law
I am, of course, moved to tears by the concerns of this fine, upstanding officer of the law:
Every time police Sergeant Joseph Hubbard stops a speeder or serves a search warrant, he says he worries suspects assume they can open fire -- without breaking the law. Hubbard, a 17-year veteran of the police department in Jeffersonville, Indiana, says his apprehension stems from a state law approved this year that allows residents to use deadly force in response to the “unlawful intrusion” by a “public servant” to protect themselves and others, or their property.Hey, the police and their propagandists are always telling us that if you don't do anything wrong, you've got nothing to fear. So deal with that, Mr. Law Enforcement Officer. Because, after all, it's the law!
The solution this is simple: Don't undertake unlawful intrusions.
The issue arises because of a case in Indiana where the State Supreme Court held that you had no right to resist an unlawful entry by the police.
That's patent nonsense. An unlawful act by the police is exactly the same, in terms of the law, as that of an armed criminal.
Parental Rights Amendment Introduced
HSLDA
VERBATIM POST
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE // June 5,2012 // Washington, D.C. – A proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would preserve the longstanding traditional right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children was introduced today in the U.S. Congress.
Lead sponsor Trent Franks (R-AZ) was joined by 32 cosponsors in introducing the Amendment in the House. The Senate version, led by Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), had 9 cosponsors at its introduction.
“We must protect the liberty of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children,” Senator DeMint said. “Unfortunately, parental rights are under attack, and a safeguard like this amendment is necessary. Neither the federal government nor international law should micromanage how parents are able to raise their children. Parents are best equipped to decide how their children are raised and educated, not bureaucrats from Washington and the United Nations.”
Supporters anticipate a congressional hearing on the measure, given lead sponsor Trent Franks’ position as chairman of the Constitution Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, to which the House version will be assigned.
"In my three decades of public service, I have consistently focused on protecting the right of parents to make decisions for their children,” Congressman Franks says. “Put simply, there are really only two options when it comes to who will determine the substance of a child's education: it will be either a bureaucrat who doesn’t know the child’s name, or a parent who would pour out their last drop of blood for the child.
"I intend to continue that fight in my role as Chairman of the Constitution Subcommittee, doing everything in my power to help advance the vital Parental Rights Amendment through Congress. Nothing is more important to America's future than making sure that the education of the hearts and minds of our children is securely in the purview of the parents who love and understand them most."
This marks the third straight session of Congress in which the PRA has been introduced, and support for the measure is growing. “The PRA had 141 cosponsors in the House during the last session of Congress, but we expect to see even more support this time around,” says Michael Farris, president of ParentalRights.org, which organizes grassroots efforts for the amendment.
“The Supreme Court has accurately said that parental rights are ‘perhaps the oldest of the fundamental liberty interests recognized by [the] Court,’ yet those rights now lack sufficient legal protection under the Constitution,” Farris continues. “Thanks to concerned citizens and engaged leaders in Congress, we look forward to correcting that problem through the adoption of this amendment.”
Holder's Racial Incitement
The United States of America has a black President whose chief law enforcement officer, Attorney General Eric Holder, is also black. They have a lot of political power. So how are they using it? Well, one way is to assert to black audiences that voter ID laws are really attempts to disenfranchise black Americans. And liberals think Donald Trump's birther fantasies are offensive?
"In my travels across this country, I've heard a consistent drumbeat of concern from citizens, who—often for the first time in their lives—now have reason to believe that we are failing to live up to one of our nation's most noble ideals," Mr. Holder said Wednesday in a speech to the Council of Black Churches. Voter ID laws and white discrimination, he added, mean that "some of the achievements that defined the civil rights movement now hang in the balance."
That's right. The two most powerful men in America are black, two of the last three Secretaries of State were black, numerous corporate CEOs and other executives are black, and minorities of many races now win state-wide elections in states that belonged to the Confederacy, but the AG implies that Jim Crow is on the cusp of a comeback.

Dolphins Found to Use Weapon: The Sea Snake
Dolphins attacking a school of fish with the aid of sea snakes
Once filled with the snake's deadly toxin, the fish are quickly collected by "harvester" dolphins that accompany the weapon using "hunter" dolphins.
While many different species of animals have been found to employ tools, only a handful have ever been observed using weaponry for the specific purpose of hunting and killing other animals.
"This greatly increases the level of intelligence we believe dolphins possess. They are perhaps the equivalent of a human being on the borderline of retardation, having an IQ of about 70," said Dr. Lunya Shadid, a dolphin researcher in Honolulu. "It's one of the few animals that ranks anywhere near the intelligence level of humans."

........We stayed at a 4 star Hotel for the first time in our lives 2 blocks off Music Row. Christy and I ended up playing 3 more venues than we were scheduled for........We were very well received I think. Had one music publisher/record dude talk seriously to me, one booking agent from Atlanta made me an offer, Which btw I am going to accept, and also had the privilege of being joined on stage 3xs with a band from GA. called "Downside UP" Christy and I did 3 shows with them performing my songs. It was great to be 62 years old on stage with 3 22 year olds, and one 20 year old talented musicians.
.......There are some still photos as well some better than others, this one was taken at "Winners" a really freaking cool place to play. But we had a better time at the club next door called "Losers" We were really on our game there. But, our best show of all six venues was at a place called Otters........people really got into us there, good applause, and great feedback from everyone from the owner, people in the audience , the sound technicians, and most importantly from the festival promoter himself. BTW, he asked us back to do the fall fest, it is my first ever invite to it........

Commissioners warns of subversive 'Agenda 21' initiative
In a political commentary that sometimes seemed like a tent-revival exhortation, Baldwin County Commissioner Frank Burt held forth for more than 20 minutes Tuesday on the evils of a 1992 United Nations initiative known as Agenda 21 that he characterized as a threat to U.S. sovereignty.
"We are all for protecting the environment," Burt said, "but this is something that has seeped in amongst us. I don’t think we need the United Nations to tell us what to do."
He said, "We’ve got the EPA taking over the country. If the Senate approves (Agenda 21), they can come into New York City or wherever a raindrop falls and tell us what to do."
Under Agenda 21, he said, the U.S. Supreme Court will give way to the international court located in The Hague.
Commission Chairman Bob James offered support for Burt’s assessment.
"This country used to be easy enough for a caveman to understand," James said, a reference to a Press-Register editorial cartoon depicting James and Burt as cavemen for refusing to grant a school board request for a tax referendum. "People need to wake up and take this country back."
Both commissioners predicted a groundswell of voters in November’s national elections that would restore the country.

Defense: Terrain Modification Part II – Planning For Cover
In the last entry I pointed out some issues that were discovered during out terrain review and tackled the first task that was at hand – clearing fields of observation and fire. Referring back to that entry you’ll see that I contrasted the effort taken to increase our fields of fire and observation while reducing our deadspace with the fact that the measures implemented had another effect. It effectively reduced the threats cover and concealment and increased their field of observation. During the course of this case study I intend to frequently contrast how measures taken will affect both our position and the threats capabilities. In this entry we’re going to look at some forms of Cover (the first part of the the C in OCOKA) and develop not only our concept of how we can employ cover to continue building our defensive plan but weigh some of the advantages and disadvantages of different types of cover.
First up is a review of what cover is and isn’t.

La GOP has Ron Paul supporters arrested
Chaos erupted in Shreveport today as police officers arrested state GOP delegates who support Ron Paul for the party's 2012 presidential nomination.
The dispute arose after the state party's central committee issued "supplemental rules" earlier this week concerning the delegate selection process. A press release from the Ron Paul campaign this afternoon referred to the 11th hour changes as "illegal rules."
After fights in the Rules Committee Friday, state party chairman opened the convention moving to pass the new rules, when the majority of delegates moved to elect a new convention chair. When Villere refused to yield the dais, the majority elected a new chair and turned their chairs. As this was happening, the Villere faction convinced the Shreveport Police Department to arrest some of the Paul delegates holding microphones for "trespassing."
During the forcible arrests, Shreveport police dislocated the hip of the gentlemen in the video here, identified by the Paul campaign as State Central Commiteeman Henry Herford Jr. of Franklin Parish.

Naivete
Here's the question: Is it better to let someone lead who is so intent upon it that his leadership will provide cohesion to the Liberty Community? We are now a ragged bunch of individuals seeking only self-defense against a tyranny better thought out, better prosecuted than our efforts toward liberty. We are behind, struggling with some manner of discourse with our fellow citizens that will wake them up, that will save them so that we might have reinforcements. But, we are approaching the moment when we can no longer look out for the sports enthusiasts and game show attendees among us.
If we banded together tightly, how many would there be? 300? I doubt it. What is that? One thousandth of one percent of the population?
I am not being defeatist, but I have watched this community being ripped apart, divided from the beginning. Two factions become five, five become twelve until we are doing nothing more than sitting alone in our bunkers waiting for the knock on the door to make our individual valiant attempt at resistance.

Top Ten: Modern combat rifles
1) Gewehr 98
7.92x57mm Mauser
Length: 49.2in Weight: 9.0lb
Barrel length: 29.1in
Muzzle velocity: 2,881 ft/s (878 m/sec)
The Gewehr 98 was one of the most widely adopted and successful bolt-action rifles ever made. Its production was short (1898-1918), but with the onset of World War I its numbers reached near 5 million and proved to be the standard bearer among rifles of its time. Almost all subsequently produced bolt-action rifles pay homage in one design feature or another to the G98 including the United States’ very own and much beloved M1903 Springfield. Only the AK-47 and its derivatives come close to the G98 and her descendants in total production numbers.
A-1H Skyraider Drops Toilet From Dixie Station
The following is an account of this event, courtesy of Clint Johnson, Captain, USNR Ret. Captain Johnson was one of the two VA-25 A-1 Skyraider pilots credited with shooting down a MiG-17 on June 20, 1965.
I was a pilot in VA-25 on the 1965 Vietnam cruise.
The 572 was flown by CDR C. W. "Bill" Stoddard. His wingman in 577 (which was my assigned airplane) was LCDR Robin Bacon, who had a wing station mounted movie camera (the only one remaining in the fleet from WWII).
The flight was a Dixie Station strike (South Vietnam) going to the Delta. When they arrived in the target area and CDR Stoddard was reading the ordnance list to the FAC, he ended with "and one code name Sani-flush".
The FAC couldn't believe it and joined up to see it. It was dropped in a dive with LCDR Bacon flying tight wing position to film the drop. When it came off, it turned hole to the wind and almost struck his airplane.
It made a great ready room movie. The FAC said that it whistled all the way down. The toilet was a damaged toilet, which was going to be thrown overboard.
One of our plane captains rescued it and the ordinance crew made a rack, tailfins and nose fuse for it. Our checkers maintained a position to block the view of the air boss and the Captain while the aircraft was taxiing forward.
Just as it was being shot off, we got a 1MC message from the bridge, "What the hell was on 572's right wing?" There were a lot of jokes with air intelligence about germ warfare. I wish that we had saved the movie film.
CDR Stoddard was later killed while flying 572 in Oct 1966. He was hit by three SAMs over Vinh.
The Southern Lady and Grand Old Man
Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman
North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission
www.ncwbts150.com
"The Official Website of the North Carolina WBTS Sesquicentennial"
“As the shifting social scene swims before my eyes, I realize that two of the most picturesque figures of the past have almost disappeared, the Southern Lady and the Grand Old Man. There are a few survivals of the Southern Lady, but their voices are growing fainter.
The old-time Southern Lady with purring and ceremonious manners was the queen of what has been called the moonshine and magnolia era. The memory of her is like the faint perfume of old roses, a little sweet, a little melancholy, a little suggestive of decay. Her mind ran in deep groves and her manners were brocaded. The worst of it was that she had many spurious imitators who lacked her charm.
The Grand Old Man type has disappeared from village life in the South. He was an institution. He had form, background, and color. He was often a lawyer and politician, in frock coat and high hat. He was sometimes an old-line Whig of the Henry Clay school. An old-line Whig has been described by somebody as a man who wore a ruffled shirt and drank a lot of whiskey. The Grand Old Man’s more remote ancestors fought the Indians and the British; he and his more immediate relatives fought the Yankees.
He will tell over and over the story of his grandfather who was stood up by a group of Tories after King’s Mountain and threatened with death unless he gave certain information; of how his grandfather looked down the gun barrels and told them to “shoot and be damned.”
The Grand Old Man most likely had an old uniform and a sword somewhere in the house, the uniform to be buried in and the sword to hang over the fireplace. If his grandchildren today were asked about the sword, they would probably display indifference and ignorance. To them Gettysburg is little more than a name – a name they have heard too often.
But the history of that sword, lying dormant for years in their brains, will perhaps come to life in their later years and whisper in their ears its story of courage and sacrifice.
The Grand Old Man was undoubtedly a social force in his day. He was ceremonious, courteous, deliberate, positive, and a trifle pompous. If he ever posed, he was not conscious of it. He always knew to a certainty what the government should have done and what it should do. His opinions always hardened his convictions. But this stalwart and picturesque figure has faded out. If there be any of his kind left, they are today little more than museum pieces.

Defiance: A Lost Virtue?
It was Aug. 19, 1920. A military detachment of Red Army soldiers led by Bolshevik authorities steamrolled into the Russian town of Khitrovo to implement a policy known as “Prodrazvyorstka”; resource allocation in the name of national security which led to the confiscation of vital grain supplies and the starvation of millions of peasants.
To be sure, multiple excuses were used to rationalize the program, all in the name of the “greater good.” But in reality, Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks saw the farming culture of Russia not as human beings, but as mechanisms for feeding city residents and the army; the power centers of the newly formed Communist government.
This attitude of collectivism (and elitism at the highest levels) and the treatment of the food producing subsection of the populace as slaves to the machine predictably generated the desire for civil unrest and even rebellion. By the time the Red Army had entered Khitrovo, the region was already a tinderbox. After they had taken everything of value and began to beat elderly men in public view as an example to the rest of the town, a war had ignited.
At the height of what was later called “The Tambov Rebellion,” between 50,000 and 70,000 Russian citizens took up arms against their oppressive government. These included Red Army soldiers who left their posts to join the cause.

Syria’s Insurrection Is Not America’s War
Flander's Field
In pushing for U.S. military intervention in Syria—arming the insurgents and using U.S. air power to “create safe zones” for anti-regime forces “inside Syria’s borders”—The Washington Post invokes “vital U.S. interests” that are somehow imperiled there.
Exactly what these vital interests are is left unexplained.
For 40 years, we have lived with a Damascus regime led by either Bashar Assad or his father, Hafez Assad. Were our “vital interests” in peril all four decades?
In 1991, George H.W. Bush recruited the elder Assad into his Desert Storm coalition that liberated Kuwait. Damascus sent 4,000 troops. In gratitude, we hosted a Madrid Conference to advance a land-for-peace deal between Assad and Israel.
It failed, but it could have meant a return of the Golan Heights to Assad and Syria’s return to the eastern bank of the Sea of Galilee.
We could live with that, but cannot live with Bashar?
