Pakistan says U.S. drones in its air space will be shot down

Pakistan will shoot down any U.S. drone that intrudes its air space per new directives, a senior Pakistani official told NBC News on Saturday.

According to the new Pakistani defense policy, "Any object entering into our air space, including U.S. drones, will be treated as hostile and be shot down," a senior Pakistani military official told NBC News.

The policy change comes just weeks after a deadly NATO attack on Pakistani military checkpoints accidentally killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, prompting Pakistani officials to order all U.S. personnel out of a remote airfield in Pakistan.

Pakistan told the U.S. to vacate Shamsi Air Base by December 11.

A senior military official from Quetta, Pakistan, confirmed to NBC News on Saturday that the evacuation of the base, used for staging classified drone flights directed against militants, “will be completed tomorrow,” according to NBC’s Fakhar ur Rehman.

Pakistan's Frontier Corps security forces took control of the base Saturday evening after most U.S. military personnel left, Xinhua news agency reported. Civil aviation officials also moved in Saturday, Xinhua said.

Romney: Islam Is a Peace-Loving Religion

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says the Muslims he knows are "peace-loving and America-loving individuals."

At a campaign event in Cedar Rapids Friday, the subject of how to handle the threat posed by radical Islam was raised.

As reported in the Des Moines Register, Romney reminded the gathering he had grown up in the Detroit area which has a large Muslim community.

About radical Islam Romney said, "They take a very different view of Islam than the Muslims I know."

"I believe people of the Islamic faith do not have to subscribe to the ideas of radical, violence and jihadism," added Romney.

One man at the event claimed he had not heard Muslims denouncing Islamic jihad or terrorism.

INSANE: Glenn Beck calls Tea Partiers racists

Hopefully this will wake those up who have been disregarding my view that Beck is a *dishonest man who is only striving for the almighty dollar.

*His favorable view of the Tyrant Lincoln when he clearly must know the truth, being a friend of the Judge.

Words fail me.

It's fine that Glenn Beck does not like Newt Gingrich. It's not OK for Beck to say this:
“If you have a big government progressive, or a big government progressive in Obama… ask yourself this, Tea Party: is it about Obama’s race? Because that’s what it appears to be to me. If you’re against him but you’re for this guy [Newt Gingrich], it must be about race. I mean, what else is it? It’s the policies that matter.”
So Glenn Beck is accusing any Tea Partier, or anyone for that matter, who supports Newt Gingrich of being a racist. Deplorable. Completely deplorable. That Glenn Beck can see no difference between Barack Obama and Newt Gingrich other than race exposes delusion or worse.

That Glenn Beck accuses you of being a racist if you support Newt Gingrich is unacceptable.

Legal Insurrection has more on Beck beclowning himself: Saturday Night Card Game (Glenn Beck plays race card on Newt, and me, and you).

It’s getting Hot & Hotter over Fast & Furious in the Congressional House Judiciary Committee where the Republicans are trying to sort out the sordid actions of the Justice Department during and after the “Gunwalking” program that has put thousands of high-powered weapons in the hands of the Mexican drug cartels.

Here Attorney General Holder is having just a bit of difficulty with the definition of the word “lying”.

According to the Daily Caller, the Democrats are acting like “defense attorneys trying to protect Attorney General Eric Holder, rather than pushing for accountability” over the deadly program.

Holder testified before the committee on Thursday about Fast and Furious and admitted he doesn’t plan to terminate anyone over the program that led to the murders of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry and at least 300 Mexican citizens. As Republicans continued to grill Holder, Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and others interjected with complaints about the nature of the questioning.

Poe thinks this kind of behavior is unacceptable, and told TheDC he thinks Holder can handle the tough questions on his own.

“The Democrats in the Judiciary Committee seem to be giving cover for Eric Holder,” Poe said during an interview outside the hearing room. “They keep interrupting when members of Congress or Republicans ask the tough questions. They act almost like defense lawyers to Eric Holder. I don’t think he needs any help. He can answer the questions on his own.”

Well, he can . . . once he figures out whether he’s lying or not — or somewhere in between?

Edenton, NC Tea Party: An American First

Edenton, NC Tea Party: An American First

"Many Americans have heard of the Boston Tea Party of 1773. Far less can tell of the Edenton Tea Party of 1774. I can count a few, but I have some fingers left.

During the Revolution era, Edenton, North Carolina was a hotbed of political debate. After approximately fifty men, dressed like Indians, boarded three ships on December 16, 1773, and dumped tea in the Boston, Massachusetts harbor to protest imposing trade legislation, many North Carolinians approved. In 1774, the North Carolina province passed non-importation resolves to protest British trade regulation. That year at tea parties, a fashionable form of entertainment, polemics and ardent gesturing no doubt heated the r
ooms and hallways of Edenton. Soon, an unforeseen defense of liberty occurred there."

Trung sisters

Saw Rich's post referencing mine which reminded me of the Trung sisters. One of the main streets in Saigon is named Hai Ba Trung which means two ladies Trung.

Wikipedia

Early years

The Trưng sisters were born in a rural Vietnamese village, into a military family. Their father was a prefect of Mê Linh (Chinese: 麊泠), therefore the sisters grew up in a house well-versed in the martial arts. They also witnessed the cruel treatment of the Viets by their Chinese overlords. The Trưng sisters spent much time studying the art of warfare, as well as learning fighting skills

When a neighbouring prefect came to visit Mê Linh, he brought with him his son, Thi Sách. Thi Sách met and fell in love with Trưng Trắc during the visit, and they were soon married.

Rebellion

With Chinese rule growing intolerably exacting, and the policy of forcible assimilation into the Chinese mold, Thi Sách made a stand against the Chinese. The Chinese responded by executing Thi Sách as a warning to all those who contemplated rebellion. His death spurred his wife to take up his cause and the flames of insurrection spread.

In AD 39, Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị, after successfully repelling a small Chinese unit from their village, assembled a large army consisting mostly of women.[citation needed] Within months, they had taken back many (about 65) citadels from the Chinese, and had liberated Nam Việt. They became queens of the country, and managed to resist subsequent Chinese attacks on Nam Việt for over two years.

Defeat

Their revolution was short lived however, as the Chinese gathered a huge expeditionary army to crush the native fighters. Legend has it that the Chinese army did this by going into battle unclothed. The enemy's brazenness so shamed the Vietnamese female warriors that they fled the battle scene, leaving the weakened forces easily defeated by the Chinese. Phung Thi Chinh, a pregnant noble lady, was the captain of a group of soldiers who were to protect the central flank of Nam Việt. She gave birth on the front line, and with her baby in one arm, and a sword in the other, continued to fight the battle.[citation needed]

Despite the many heroic efforts, the Trưng sisters realised that they had been defeated and that to fight further would mean death at the hands of the Chinese. Therefore to protect their honour, and to elude ridicule, the two queens committed suicide by drowning themselves in the Hát River in AD 43. Some of their loyal soldiers continued to fight to the death, whilst others committed suicide (including Phung Thi Chinh, who also took her newborn baby's life). There is a story of one woman who would randomly charge through Chinese camps, screaming and slaying random men. Finally, after killing many more, she committed suicide in the hope of returning to her respected commanders.[citation needed]

Do-It-Yourself Internet With Ad-Hoc Wi-Fi

Via Sipsey Street Irregulars

These days, no popular movement goes without an Internet presence of some kind, whether it's organizing on Facebook or spreading the word through Twitter. And as we've seen in Egypt, that means that your Internet connection can be the first to go. Whether you're trying to check in with your family, contact your friends, or simply spread the word, here are a few ways to build some basic network connectivity when you can't rely on your cellular or landline Internet connections.

Even if you've managed to find an Internet connection for yourself, it won't be that helpful in reaching out to your fellow locals if they can't get online to find you. If you're trying to coordinate a group of people in your area and can't rely on an Internet connection, cell phones, or SMS, your best bet could be a wireless mesh network of sorts--essentially, a distributed network of wireless networking devices that can all find each other and communicate with each other. Even if none of those devices have a working Internet connection, they can still find each other, which, if your network covers the city you're in, might be all you need. At the moment, wireless mesh networking isn't really anywhere close to market-ready, though we have seen an implementation of the 802.11s draft standard, which extends the 802.11 Wi-Fi standard to include wireless mesh networking, in the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) XO laptop.

However, a prepared guerrilla networker with a handful of PCs could make good use of Daihinia ($25, 30-day free trial), an app that piggybacks on your Wi-Fi adapter driver to turn your normal ad-hoc Wi-Fi network into a multihop ad-hoc network (disclaimer: we haven't tried this ourselves yet), meaning that instead of requiring each device on the network to be within range of the original access point, you simply need to be within range of a device on the network that has Daihinia installed, effectively allowing you to add a wireless mesh layer to your ad-hoc network.

Advanced freedom fighters can set up a portal Web page on their network that explains the way the setup works, with Daihinia instructions and a local download link so they can spread the network even further. Lastly, just add a Bonjour-compatible chat client like Pidgin or iChat, and you'll be able to talk to your neighbors across the city without needing an Internet connection.

Does This Design of Two Towers Remind You of Anything?

These residential high-rise buildings to be completed in Seoul, South Korea, by 2015 are connected in the middle by a cloud, which the designer says “differentiates the building from other luxury developments.”

The towers designed by architects at MVRDV are 300 and 260 meters high with a “pixelated” cloud in the middle at the 27th floor. The cloud allows for more light and room for decks and greenspace.

As peaceful as that sounds, there is something a bit disconcerting about the design. Here’s what Gizmodo has to say about what may look a little too much like the towers of the World Trade Center beginning to come down on 9/11:

From higher angles the ten story tall pixelated cloud structure that connects the two 850+ foot towers certainly looks more whimsical, as I’m sure the architects at MVRDV intended it to be. But most people will be viewing it looking up from ground level. And I‘m afraid from that angle it’s very reminiscent of the images and events that were seen around the entire world that day. So I‘m not really sure how the eerie similarities weren’t spotted before this design was approved.

Insane: Charge for cash transactions proposed

Via Survival

Digital payment administrator says consumers need a disincentive to use cash, which they call a costlier payment type than digital alternatives Salt, gold and silver were all once used as payments for goods and services before the advent of metal...

Salt, gold and silver were all once used as payments for goods and services before the advent of metal alloy coins and paper notes allowed for cheaper and more efficient ways of trading wealth.

But now coins and paper too might bite the dust if a proposal to incur a charge on cash transactions becomes a reality.

"Cash was smart when it replaced raw materials as form of payment,” Tina Füssel, the managing direct of digital payment administrator Nets, told Poltiken newspaper. “But now we are in a digital age and people should understand that we now mostly use electronic means to pay rather than paper and metal. In light of that, a charge for using cash would provide an incentive to swap over.”

A recent Nationalbanken report showed that the cost of using cash amounted to 5.8 billion kroner in 2009. This cost is higher than those incurred from all other forms of payment, including the Dankort debit card, credit cards, bank transfers and direct debits.

But while cash may be more expensive for businesses than all other payment types, consumers are still charged for using direct debits and credit cards. From October 1 shops have been able to charge consumers 0.75 percent of the value of their card purchases.

These charges, however, are misleading when compared with the real cost of processing payment types, the bank lobby organisation Finansrådet argues.

“The consequence of the new charges could be that people stop using credit cards and move move to cash. That means that you create the wrong incentive structure because it promotes the most expensive payment type,” deputy chief executive Klaus Jensen told Politiken.

Other arguments against cash are that money and coins are unsanitary,

(Oh, no, Heaven forbid!)
