Robert E. Lee and the Nation

Via Billy

The White House,
Washington, January 16, 1907.

To the Hon. Hilary A. Herbert, Chairman, Chief Justice Seth Shepherd, President Edwin Alderman, Judge Charles B. Howry, General Marcus J. Wright, Mr. William A. Gordon, Mr. Thomas Nelson Page, Mr. Joseph Wilmer, And others of the Committee of Arrangement for the Celebration of the Hundredth Anniversary of the Birth of General Robert E. Lee.

Gentlemen — I regret that it is not in my power to be with you at your celebration. I join with you in honoring the life and career of that great soldier and high-minded citizen whose fame is now a matter of pride to all our countrymen. Terrible tho the destruction of the Civil War was, awful tho it was that such a conflict should occur between brothers, it is yet a matter for gratitude on the part of all Americans that this, alone among contests of like magnitude, should have left to both sides as a priceless heritage the memory of the mighty men and the glorious deeds that the iron days brought forth. The courage and steadfast endurance, the lofty fealty to the right as it was given to each man to see the right, whether he wore the gray or whether he wore the blue, now makes the memories of the valiant feats, alike of those who served under Grant and of those who served under Lee, precious to all good Americans.

Company E, 52nd Infantry, (LRP) was a 120 man-sized long-range reconnaissance patrol unit attached to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam in 1967-69.

Operating in the two northernmost military regions, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) launches two major operations. In the first operation, conducted by the 1st Cavalry Division in Quang Tri and Thua Thien provinces, south of the Demilitarized Zone, “First Team” units launched Operation Jeb Stuart. This operation was a large-scale reinforcement of the Marines in the area and focused on clearing enemy Base Areas 101 and 114.

Jeb Stuart was terminated on March 31 with enemy casualties listed at 3,268; U.S. casualties were 291 killed in action and 1,735 wounded. On the same day that Jeb Stuart was launched, other 1st Cavalry units launched Operation Pershing II in the coastal lowlands in Binh Dinh Province. This operation, designed to clear enemy forces from the area, lasted until February 29.

So it turns out that the fake news smear against the Covington Catholic students was initiated by a fake Twitter account that has now been suspended.

Real life imitates a plot from Homeland.

Trump on Tuesday said he directed White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to stop holding regular briefings, citing unfair treatment by the news media.

“The reason Sarah Sanders does not go to the ‘podium’ much anymore is that the press covers her so rudely & inaccurately, in particular certain members of the press,” Trump tweeted. “I told her not to bother, the word gets out anyway!”

Leftists Remember King By Forgetting Him [Satire]

Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC.

Yesterday was Martin Luther King Day, and left-wing politicians and commentators fanned out around the nation to pay homage to the civil rights leader by promising to violate all his most deeply held beliefs.

In a speech to the National Association of Hate-Filled Scum for a Better Tomorrow, CNN’s Don Lemon told the bloodthirsty crowd, "Martin Luther King had a dream that his children would live in a nation where they would be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, and we must honor Dr. King’s memory by making sure that nation is not the United States of America. Here in America we want to end the demonization of black people by learning to demonize white people so that we can bring racism to an end by continuing it forever. Only then will Dr. King’s dream come true by remaining false so that America can rise above the hatred of the past by sinking into the hatred of the future."

Hundreds of people from across the country came out wearing MAGA hats and waving homemade “build the wall” signs to the inaugural Blexit rally at the Globe Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, California, on Sunday.

The line outside the theatre nearly wrapped around the block hours before the event began, as eager attendees met and greeted each other.

“The conservative moment is way more diverse than the mainstream media would have people believe,” Ivan, 36, from Orange County, told, adding that his parents immigrated from Nicaragua. “As a minority, I wanted to be here to support the values this country was founded on. I’m here to stand with Blexit and against the Left.”

True North Carolina barbecue is hurting. Would a state law help?

It’s a rough time to be a North Carolina barbecue fan.

McCall’s Bar-B-Que in Clayton, Jack Cobb BBQ and Son in Farmville and legendary Chapel Hill establishment Allen & Son Barbecue all closed down in 2018, and now, Bill Ellis Barbecue in Wilson is shutting its doors as well.

Old-school barbecue barons have periodically described authentic, wood-cooked North Carolina barbecue as a dying art. A generation of artisans is reaching retirement age.

The reality probably isn’t quite so dire. There’s a new generation of pitmasters coming in behind them — but it’s smaller, and today’s chopped pork faces a slew of city inspectors who often make it harder to get an authentic-style restaurant off the ground.
