Nancy Pelosi's elitist Democrats -- America, this is the party of the rich, sneering at the poor

Via Billy

Establishment Democrats like Nancy Pelosi and others who are busy attacking Trump's pro-worker economic agenda have totally lost touch with the needs and aspirations of working Americans.

There was a time when the Democrats were the party of working Americans. They seemed to understand and fight for the interests of the working class and people living in poverty. Republicans, by contrast, struggled for decades with the perception that they were “for the rich.”

Well, how things have turned around. Just look at the latest economic pronouncements of leading establishment Democrats.

Here in my home state of California, in response to President Trump signing the GOP tax reform bill into law, state Senate Democratic leader Kevin de Leon has taken up a new cause: fighting for the right of the richest Californians to evade their taxes.

It’s almost unbelievable – but true. De Leon (who is also the leading challenger to Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her primary battle as she seeks re-election this year) has proposed setting up a new so-called charity that would enable the Silicon Valley and Hollywood elite to claw back their losses from the Trump administration’s new tax reform law.

The Mind of the North

 https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51HSR350YZL._SY445_.jpg

In my opinion, the single best short summary of the political and cultural differences between North and South appears in the movie Ride with the Devil, starring Tobey Maguire.

Ride with the Devil
is powerful, visually striking movie set during the guerilla war in Missouri during the War for Southern Independence. In one scene, Tobey Maguire’s character, a Southern guerilla fighter, spends an evening away from the bitter fighting in the home of a Southern sympathizer named Evans. Evans pours drinks for his two guests, who are extremely appreciative of Evans’ hospitality. Despite their attempts to avoid the subject, they start talking about how the war is going.
Evans nods thoughtfully, then predicts the Yankees will win. He asks his startled guests if they’d ever seen Lawrence, Kansas. They reply they have not. Evans tells his guests what he’d seen in the town while it was under construction:
As I watched those Northerners building that town, I witnessed the seeds of our own destruction being sown. I’m not speaking of abolitionist trouble-making, or even the number of Northerners. It was the school. Before they built the church, they built that schoolhouse. Then they brought in every farmer’s son and every farmer’s daughter and made sure they would think and live the same free-thinking way they do, without regard to station, or stature, or custom, or propriety. That’s when I realized that the Yankees will surely win, because they believe everyone must live and think just like them. We don’t want to make everyone be like us. We shall surely lose because we don’t care how other people live-we just take care of ourselves.

The British Version of Sherman

 https://www.chronicle.com/img/photos/biz/photo_2641_wide_large.jpg

With respect to the initiation of modern total war against a civilian population, the author below argues that after a century or two of civilized warfare between European combatants, “total war did in fact appear, beginning with the American Civil War, and has been the form of war in the twentieth century.” Lincoln’s general, Sherman, seems to have absorbed Allan Ramsey’s view of war against civilians, and was driven by his belief that Americans in the South could in no manner oppose the will of his government — to do so meant fire and sword used to bring them to subjection – after which his fury would cease. Sherman continued his total war against the Plains Indians; a young Spanish officer named Valeriano Weyler visited the North during the War, observed Sherman’s art of warfare, and used this to devastating effect against Cuban civilians in the mid-1890s.
Bernhard Thuersam, www.Circa1865.com   The Great American Political Divide

The British Version of Sherman

“Although [David] Hume presented the specter of total war against the civilian population as a reduction to absurdity of British policy on both moral and practical grounds, his good friend Allan Ramsey embraced it as the only way to win the war. But what is most important about Ramsey’s proposal in the moral justification he offered for it.

Allan Ramsey was a court [portrait] painter to George III . . . [and] also a political theorist of some merit and wrote a number of pamphlets on political topics . . . [arguing in 1778] that the war is being lost because the British have not followed a proper strategy. The war must be turned against the civilian population.

Ramsey proposes that a garrison be established in New York . . . to serve as a rendezvous point for all British operations. Ten thousand troops are then to embark on transports to any province that is vulnerable and important . . . [and] to carry away all “that may be useful to the public service” and then “burn and destroy the houses, magazines, and plantations . . . sparing the lives of all the persons who do not attempt by arms to prevent them.” The troops are then to embark for some other province “where the like may be repeated.”

Washington’s army could not match the mobility of the British navy, and one could expect the colonial army to melt away as men returned to their devastated provinces to assist their families. Should the people remain obstinate, their scorched and impoverished land could be occupied by loyal immigrants.

Ramsey recognized that “such a scheme . . .” would be rejected as barbarous by “the more human, and more respectable part of the community.” But to this he had an ingenious reply.

[As] the American people claim to be sovereign; thus the people themselves are in a state of war with the King’s forces. “[The] inhabitants of America . . . with the express purpose of making war upon England, have formed themselves into a Government . . . where every man may be said, in his own individual person, to have bid defiance to the King of Great Britain; so that he must thank his own folly and temerity, if, at any time, he should come off short from so unequal a contest.”

We have here the germ of the twentieth-century rationale for total war: war aimed at the people of a nation, scorched-earth strategy, the bombing of civilian populations, massive deportations of peoples, and the enslavement of the vanquished.

Total war is not unique to the twentieth century, nor is it due to “technology,” which has merely made its implementation more practicable and terrible. Modern total war is possible only among “civilized” nations. It is shaped and legitimated by an act of reflection, a way of thinking about the world whereby an entire people become the enemy.

Happily the rules [of civilized warfare] were still in force for Lord North and George III, who did not follow Ramsay’s advice to wage total war against the colonists. The complete domination of reflection over moral sentiment, which is the mark of the barbarism of refinement, had not yet occurred.”

Civilizational Collapse and the Brain

Via David

“The curse of every ancient civilization was that its men in the end became unable to fight. Materialism, luxury, safety, even sometimes an almost modern sentimentality, weakened the fibre of each civilized race in turn; each became in the end a nation of pacifists, and then each was trodden under foot by some ruder people that had kept the virile fighting power the lack of which makes all other virtues useless and sometimes even harmful.”
— President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt

In this essay I will weave together three disparate and seemingly-unconnected things to paint a picture of what I see as the fundamental threat to Western Civilization.

THREAD ONE: THE CIVILIZATIONAL PULSE

I have watched, and re-watched, and re-re-watched, a fantastic lecture given by Bill Whittle: The Assault On Civilizational Structures (1 hour, 44 minutes).  He talks about many fascinating and intertwined topics but at about 53:02 he starts to discuss what he sees as critical issue facing our civilization, specifically the heartbeat of civilizations and the threat civilizations face from within – I agree!  He describes a pattern that happens time and again throughout humanity’s entire history.

Civilizations, he says, start small, rise slowly, accelerate, reach a peak where they are dominant and unstoppable… and then collapse.  More importantly, the collapse happens almost overnight – “It's virtually like a strobe-light; it's almost instantaneous” – and he adds that we in the West are in a “rather ripe place”, something with which I also agree (and I wish I didn’t).  Seconding this is the soon-to-be-released film The Fight of Our Lives – Defeating the Ideological War Against the West in which historian Niall Ferguson observes in the trailer:

“Civilizations, empires, great powers can fall apart very fast.  Collapse can come quickly, like a thief in the night.”

Senators try to scrub Jefferson's name from the Arch

Via Billy

Lightning show beneath the Eads Bridge

How nice that our two Missouri senators can find common ground in the removal of the name "Jefferson" from the most recognized structure in the St. Louis area ("We call it the Arch; soon, that may be its formal name, too ," Jan. 5).

The proposal, introduced by Republican Roy Blunt the same week as the Confederate Monument in Forest Park was taken down, scrubs the name of the slave-owning third president and author of the Declaration of Independence from the monument celebrating Western expansion. Instead of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the shiny silver structure will be named the Gateway Arch National Monument.

Thank goodness visitors can now avoid honoring those who brought white privilege to the Plains, and can purchase "Made in China" Arch souvenirs with no reminder of the author of Jeffersonian democracy.

Someday, I predict a successor to Sen. Blunt will likely introduce important legislation to remove the word "Gateway" from the monument name since the significance will have been lost. Or, perhaps by then the rusty old wicket will be replaced by a giant biodegradable question mark as people won't know what it was all about to begin with.

Instead of criticizing Trump on immigration issues, we should thank him for doing his job

President Trump and his administration are being unfairly criticized for concluding that a program called Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that has allowed 200,000 citizens of El Salvador to legally remain in the U.S. since 2001 is just what its name says – temporary.

Predictably, when the Trump administration announced earlier this month that TPS for the Salvadorans would end in 2019, the left and mainstream media erupted. They contended, in effect, that the president should act without congressional authorization to make what was always intended to be a temporary program permanent.

The Nation published an article headlined: “Trump to 200,000 Salvadoran Immigrants: Drop Dead.”
Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., tweeted that the President Trump’s decision “breaks with our country’s moral obligation to care for our neighbors.”

The media don't like 'shithole countries' either

The next time Mika Brzezinski is soaking in a view of the Fontaine de la Rotonde on one of her jaunts to the south of France, I hope she sends up a prayer for the "shithole" countries she skirted on the way there.

President Trump reportedly referred to Haiti, El Salvador, and other places you’d only want to visit in passing on a cruise line as “shithole countries,” and the whole national media acted as if they had to pause their Habitat for Humanity projects to share a cry.

MAGA: Fiat Chrysler moves Mexico production plant to Michigan. Will invest $1 billion and add 2,500 jobs

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCHA.MI) (FCAU.N) said on Thursday it will shift production of Ram heavy-duty pickup trucks from Mexico to Michigan in 2020, a move that lowers the risk to the automaker’s profit should President Donald Trump pull the United States out of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

A third way toward entitlement reform: Time limits on housing benefits

Via Billy

Several states have considered and implemented time limits on the number of years people can live in public housing, not funded by the federal government, if they agree to an incentive program in advance. (AP Photo/Cathy Bussewitz)

President Trump has stated his intention to focus on entitlement reform. While House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., wants to move forward on this issue, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has stated that major entitlement reform is off the table unless there is clear bipartisan support.

By all accounts, there is almost no chance of this happening before the 2018 midterm elections.

There is however, a third way toward entitlement reform which would neither require cutting or increasing any programs and which may not even require new legislation. This third way would be to direct the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to allow housing authorities to time limit housing benefits for nonsenior, able-bodied adults.

Libs Freak Over Trump “S***hole” Comment, African Sociologist Says He’s Right

“President Donald Trump is absolutely right,” says Mamady Traore, a 30-year-old sociologist in the West African nation of Guinea. “When you have heads of state who mess with the constitutions to perpetuate their power. When you have rebel factions that kill children, disembowel women as saints, who mutilate innocent civilians.”
Though the entire left responded with exasperation to a report that President Donald Trump allegedly used the term “s**thole” to describe some of the poorest, crime-ridden nations on Earth this week, one African social scientist made it clear he agreed with the president’s alleged viewpoint.

Pastor: Joy Reid should move to Haiti
Other members of Trump's evangelical advisory board have also defended his remarks. Pastor Robert Jeffress said on Friday Trump was "right on target" when he made the remarks.

Pastor Mark Burns filmed a video in which he said Joy Reid should consider moving to Haiti after he and the MSNBC host had a heated debate during his appearance Saturday morning on her show.

Burns appeared to have filmed the video in the car picking him up after the contentious interview. He also posted the video on Twitter.

"Just wanted to say to Joy, who I consider a friend, she's always been very kind and I think fair to me, but obviously in the interview you just saw, if you watched Joy Reid, that she should just move to Haiti since she's more concerned about Haitian immigrants than black Americans here in poverty," Burns, a member of President Trump's evangelical council, said.
