On 9 May 1457 B.C. occurred the Battle of Megiddo between the Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III & a coalition of Canaanites under the King of Kadesh. It's the first battle recorded in relatively reliable detail. Well, reliable, but mighty churched-up, because it was recorded by Thutmose' lackey.

Stripping out all the flattery, he led his army through an unguarded pass & was able to surprise the Canaanites, but at the risk of piecemeal destruction. His gamble paid off with hegemony over Palestine for a couple of centuries. Thutmose required the defeated kings to send their sons to live at his court, so when they grew up they returned to rule their lands as converted Egyptians.

Sort of like sending your kids to college.

The sniper was probably Ben Powell, a Rebel crack shot who, like today’s snipers, was conceded virtual independence by his officers. His only job was to rove along the Union lines looking for a clean shot. Berry Benson, another Confederate sharpshooter, recalled meeting Powell in the Wilderness (site of the May 1864 battle that resulted in nearly 30,000 total casualties) and examining his Whitworth, which was so powerful that it could serve as a sort of howitzer when no direct fire targets offered themselves.

“Having nothing to do, I went down across a field where Ben Powell, with his Whitworth rifle, was sharpshooting,” Benson recalled in his memoir, Confederate Scout Sniper. “There had been a number of Whitworth rifles (with telescope sight) brought from England, running the blockade. These guns with ammunition had been distributed to the army, our brigade receiving one. It was given to Powell, as he was known to be an excellent shot. In campaigns, he posted himself wherever he pleased, for the purpose of picking off the enemy’s men. I shot the gun a few times. It kicked powerfully. . . .

Once at Petersburg Powell gave [Blackwood] the gun to shoot, and as there was nobody particular in sight to shoot at, he held it up at a high angle and fired it over into the besiegers’ camp. Not long after, in a Northern paper, he read an account of two men being shot at a well, struck by the same ball, which had come so far that the report of the gun was not heard. And the day given was the same day Blackwood fired the Whitworth.”

The livestock industry now uses almost 80% of all the antibiotics used in the U.S.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been trying to get the meat industry to reduce its use of antibiotics, even proposing a set of voluntary guidelines in 2012, but it hasn't done much with it since. In the meantime, antibiotic (ab)use on livestock farms continues to grow.

 According to data from the FDA, the livestock industry now uses almost 80% of all the antibiotics used in the U.S. The main concern is that the practice of dosing healthy farm animals daily with antibiotics will create drug-resistant bacteria. About three-quarters of Salmonella found on ground turkey and chicken breast are now resistant to at least one antibiotic, and almost half of the Campylobacter found on chicken products are resistant to tetracyclines. Here are some other examples of antibiotic abuse in the food industry.

Among the approximately 20,000 books burned at Berlin’s Opernplatz (Opera Square) in 1933, were works by the 19th century German poet, Heinrich Heine, who wrote, “Christianity – and that is its greatest merit – has somewhat mitigated that brutal Germanic love of war, but could not destroy it.” 

So begins Gisele Perl’s memoir, I Was a Doctor in Auschwitz.  A Jewish gynecologist, Dr. Perl struggled to comprehend the depravity she witnessed in the Nazi concentration camp.  She concurred with Heine’s assessment, as well as his prophesy of the recrudescence of “the spirit of destruction, inherent in the German soul.”  Almost 100 years before the rise to power of Adolf Hitler, Heine had presciently written the words that are memorialized at Israel’s official memorial to the Jewish Holocaust victims, Yad Vashem:  “Where  they burn books, they will in the end also burn people.”

In her extraordinary account, Dr. Perl relates her daily experience in Auschwitz, where bodies of the dead were burned, an estimated 1.3 million dead, 90% of them Jewish.  As one of the fortunate few, Dr. Perl survived the concentration camps to return to her chosen profession and bring new life into the world. Her memoir and life provide fitting insights during this month’s national observance of Jewish American Heritage, and last month’s Holocaust Remembrance Week, April 7-14.

Liberal media spin Benghazi scandal to protect Team Obama

In the real world, when you cover up four murders after the fact, you likely go to jail. In government, you retire with dignity and run for president with full media support.

Up until yesterday, that was the Benghazi scenario following the death of four Americans including our ambassador to Libya.

The Obama administration has lied, stonewalled, bullied, and intimidated – the true marks of an open and transparent administration. And, with a few notable exceptions, the American media haven’t just let them get away it. Heck, they’ve helped.

Hill testimony of State Department whistleblowers might change that, but it’s doubtful given the one-sided reporting so far.

Boehner: Key Emails Could Point to Benghazi Cover-Up

 

House Speaker John Boehner is calling on the White House to release a series of key emails between a State Department official and the Libyan consulate following the Sept. 11, 2012, terror attack in Libya which could demonstrate a whitewash of the events.

On Sept. 12, 2012 – the day after the attack that killed four Americans and four days before U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s five Sunday show appearances – a senior State Department official emailed her superiors to alert them that the terror attacks were conducted by Islamic terrorists, Boehner told reporters at a press briefing on Thursday.

"The State Department would not allow our committees to keep copies of this email when it was reviewed," Boehner said. "I would call on the president to order the State Department to release this email so the American people can see it."

The White House continues to claim it made only "stylistic" changes to the talking points used by Rice, ignoring the fact that senior White House officials directed the changes to the talking points, Boehner said, referring to testimony from a House Oversight and Investigation Committee hearing held Wednesday on the attack.

“Mr. President, I have not sought to speak hitherto on the momentous question of the day, because I did not believe that any good would be accomplished…the disease seemed to me to be so deeply seated that none but the most radical remedies would suffice; and I had no hope that the public mind of the North was in a condition to receive any such proposition. All must see that the bonds which have hitherto bound together the members of this Confederacy are parting like flax before the fire of popular passion. 

We cannot recall the past; we cannot restore the dead; but the hope and the trust of those who desire a Union, are that we may be able to reconstruct a new Government and a new Union, which may perhaps be more permanent and efficient than the old. 

A President has been nominated and elected by a sectional majority, who was known to have avowed and to entertain [radical] opinions; [a] standard bearer who has made [threatening] declarations in regard to the rights of the South. 

Is it surprising, then, that the Southern States should say: “It is not safe for us to remain longer in a Government which may be directed as an instrument of hostility against us; it is not safe for us to remain linger under the rule of a Government whose President may misuse his patronage for the very purpose of stirring up civil strife among us, and also for the purpose of creating civil war in our midst?

I say, therefore, sir, that the South is bound to take this course [of independence] unless it can get some guarantees which will protect it in the Union, some constitutional guarantees which will serve that end….

But, sir, I maintain that coercion, if it were possible, is not right; and if it were right, it is not possible. [The] only effect of an attempt at coercion would be to destroy the chances of a reconstruction of the Union, or, in other words, to defeat all the hopes that are left to the friends of a Union in the country. 

I proceed then, Mr. President, to make my proposition, that this Federal Government cannot be carried on within the limits and jurisdiction of a State, without the assent, the aid, and the sympathy of its people.  In the first place, it depends on the Legislatures of the several States to elect members of this body. If a majority of States, although they might represent a small minority of the people, were to refuse to send Senators here, your Government is gone; you have lost one of the most important arms of the system; you no longer have a Senate.

But sir, that is not all. To obtain the right of exclusive legislation within dock-yards, forts, your custom-houses? Where would you have your locus in quo, from which to administer the functions and powers of this General Government? Everywhere, if they were to refuse to give you this assent, you would be under State jurisdiction; and thus it would be in the power of the State constantly to thwart, obstruct, and prevent the administration of Federal power, within her limits and jurisdictions. 

So too, it is in the power of the States, if they choose, if they undertake to withdraw their assent from this Constitution, to defeat these great ends of the Union….the framers of the Constitution supposed that this Federal Government would only be an authorized Government within a State so long as it had the assent of the people of that State; and when the people of that State withdrew their assent, it was not the authorized Government; and therefore they provided no means for enforcing its powers and for exercising its jurisdictions. 

Sir, the only mode in which you could protect the administration of the Federal affairs and the Federal jurisdiction within the State, would be to set aside the State government by force, and to reduce it to a territorial condition; and then what would be the result? You first coerce a State because it secedes from thirty-two other members of this Confederacy; and you turn around and secede yourselves from it by reducing it from a condition of a State to the position of a Territory!”

The $6.3 Trillion Cost of Amnesty Insanity

     The Heritage Foundation's recently released $6.3 Trillion cost estimate for the Amnesty portion of the Schumer-Rubio or Senate "Gang-of-Eight"  "comprehensive immigration reform" bill, S.744, is only the most visible part of its horrendous potential to bankrupt the U.S. Government   The innocent-sounding official title of S.744 is “The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.” However, in reality it is a special interest bill giving amnesty to illegal immigrants, more than doubling legal immigration, and increasing guest-worker authorizations by three-fold. It benefits primarily big-business users of cheap foreign labor and those politicians and institutions that thrive on big government and social-welfare oriented voters. The crushing costs of these benefits for big foreign labor users and the political Left will be paid for by American workers and taxpayers. The Heritage report's author, Robert Rector, believes $6.3 Trillion is a conservative minimal estimate of the cost of Amnesty. This will not be the total cost of the Schumer-Rubio bill, however, and the Federal Government is already spending  $1.0 Trillion more per year than its annual tax revenues of $2.52 Trillion. How much more will we have to borrow from the People's Republic of China to finance amnesty?

     Adding $6.3 Trillion to an already dangerous $16.5 Trillion national debt is reason enough for public alarm or for any sane member of Congress to vote against it. But as expensive as it looks on the surface, including the strong possibility of having to borrow much of the future fiscal liabilities from China, underneath the surface the bill contains other substantial costs not included in the $6.3 Trillion.  

     The Senate bill is like an iceberg in that the fiscal costs of massive increases in legal immigration and temporary guest-worker authorizations will not likely be made visible by the mainstream media. 

A large portion of these costs will be borne by state and local government, and like the costs of illegal immigration and amnesty, are essentially a taxpayer paid subsidy to the users of cheap foreign labor. 

Meanwhile, we can look for a well-financed propaganda campaign by big business and cheap foreign labor lobbyists obscuring their financial interests and promoting the whimsical benefits of happy-clappy multiculturalism and stealthily arranged taxpayer-subsidized “free enterprise.” The Left and the mainstream media will serve the usual anecdotal cool-aid about immigration with no mention of the impending suffering of American workers impacted by massive increases in competition from cheaper imported labor. They will not recognize the shadow of slavery. Nor will they think beyond the multikulti glories of liberal cloud-cuckoo-land to impending increases in taxes, borrowing, and debt.

     Besides the fiscal costs, Harvard labor economist George Borjas has shown that although foreign-born labor in the U.S. contributes $1.6 Trillion to the GDP, the net U.S. profit is only $35 billion, tiny and overwhelmed by the huge fiscal debit and social benefit liabilities, which will get much worse with Obamacare. Moreover, there is a gross injustice involved. Special interest users of foreign-born labor profit $437 billion annually at American worker expense, $2,800 per employed person, or $402 billion in total. Special interest lobbyists spend about $300 million per year to maintain this injustice.

     Passage of the bill will bring in the bacon for big-business special interests and authorize an increase in permanent legal immigration from 1.1 million to 2.6 million annually. The pre-1986 amnesty years averaged 300 to 500 thousand. Guest-worker authorizations could increase from the present level of just over 900,000 to 2.7 to 3.0 million. Because the 1965 Immigration Reform Act, with its extended family priorities, will continue to be in effect, most of these could be expected to have relatively low skill levels and similar public cost liabilities to Rector's per person estimate for amnestied illegal immigrants.  

     Rector's estimate does not anticipate the huge multiplier effect of past amnesties, although immigration law enforcement is likely to be negligible, or for show only, as long as Barack Obama or a like-minded liberal Democrat or accommodating Republican holds the office of U.S. President. 

     NumbersUSA recently estimated that 33 million more foreign workers would be coming to the U.S. in the next 10 years, if Schumer-Rubio passes. This includes not only the amnestied immigrants but also the usual chain migration of relatives and millions of others to take advantage of what amounts to a surrender to open-door immigration policies. The Heritage Foundation estimate is very conservative in that it excludes any multiplier effect of the kind that brought two to three more illegal immigrants for every 1986 amnesty.  

     Hence the Heritage Foundation's $6.3 Trillion cost estimate may be far short of the total cost of the near open-door immigration policies proposed by Schumer-Rubio. 

     The total fiscal and economic cost of Schumer-Rubio is beyond estimation and imagination. Such a massive new wave of poorly regulated immigration also increases our vulnerability to terrorism, but Muslim Brotherhood,  Hamas, Hezbollah,  and Al Qaeda terrorist leaders would be hard pressed to come up with a plan that did more fiscal  damage to America than the provisions of Senate bill S.744.    

     With over 21 million Americans wanting a full-time job and unable to find one, flooding the job market with amnestied illegals, millions of their relatives, and millions of new guest-workers seems like a plan straight from the command post of hell.

     In a May 6 blog, Peter Brimelow, Editor of Vdare.com, reminded his readers of other problems associated with massive and poorly regulated immigration that are often neglected for reasons of political correctness and a lack of compassion for ordinary American workers, retirees, taxpayers, and their families.

“But in case anyone has forgotten, the problems include: crime; disease; destroyed schools; destroyed neighborhoods, congestion; racial friction; linguistic displacement; wage depression; welfare costs; political displacement; and, last but of course not least, the abolition of America.”

Recall Petitions Begin for Dems Who Supported Gun Control

Colorado's secretary of state has "approved petition language" for recall efforts aimed at State Senate President John Morse (D) and Rep. Mike McLachlan (D). The recall campaigns are in response to their support of expanded gun control laws in the state.

 

Recalls are also being being pushed for Reps. Rhonda Fields (D) and Evie Hudak (D). Fields pushed for 15 round magazine limits. Hudak made a name for herself by telling a rape victim that if she'd had a gun on her person, her attacker "would have been able to get that from [her] and possibly use it against [her]."

Benghazi makes Watergate 'look like kindergarten'

Revelations in Wednesday’s congressional hearings on the Benghazi terrorist attacks prove it is a massive scandal that will carry significant consequences for those involved in the cover-up, according to retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney.

McInerney served at the highest levels in the Air Force, including time as assistant vice chief of staff and vice commander in chief of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. He believes the Obama administration deliberately misled the American people on the motivation for the attack and is now covering its tracks on decisions to prevent a military rescue in Benghazi. He told WND that is more clear than ever following Wednesday’s testimony of former Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory Hicks and two others before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

“This is going to be the biggest scandal. It is going to make Watergate look like kindergarten because Watergate was primarily limited to the Oval Office. This cuts across the whole national security apparatus, where people were lying and covering up,” McInerney said. “It is a dereliction of duty that this nation has never seen before.”

Texas District Court Judge Ends Battle with Final Order Protecting Cheerleaders’ Religious Liberty Rights

KOUNTZE, TX, May 8, 2013—Today, Hardin County District Court Judge Steven Thomas entered an order granting the Kountze Cheerleaders a victory in the seven-month-long case over the permissibility of displaying run-through banners with Bible messages at Kountze ISD sporting events.

The Court’s order declares:

• “The Kountze cheerleaders’ banners that included religious messages and were displayed during the 2012 football season were constitutionally permissible.”


• “Neither the Establishment Clause nor any other law prohibits the cheerleaders from using religious-themed banners at school sporting events.  Neither the Establishment Clause nor any other law requires Kountze I.S.D. to prohibit the inclusion of religious-themed banners at school sporting events.”

Kansas: The First State to File An Appeal By Rifle Since 1861?

You may have heard that Kansas recently passed a law that makes Kansas-made firearms which are then sold to Kansans exempt from federal regulation and in fact criminalizes the enforcement of federal law for these homegrown weapons.

Generalbundesanwalt Eric Holder took issue with Kansas’ new law. He drafted a nastygram to the Governor of Kansas threatening legal action if the law was not struck from the rolls.

In response, the Kansas Secretary of State fired back his own missive telling Generalbundesanwalt to forcibly insert his letter into his anus (or legal words to that effect).

Many are thrilled about this development, and we are certainly smiling at the effort of the SoS, but unfortunately the reality of the Constitution is going to force Kansas to recant or take up arms against the feds.

No, seriously.

Update on Camera Hunting Contest

A group calling itself the Barefoot Bandit Brigade, Puget Sound, Washington has claimed the destruction of 17 Police State cameras.  This is by far the greatest number of cameras I know of destroyed, in the U.S., so they are in the lead for the America’s.  They said on their site; “This act is concrete sabotage against the system of surveillance and control. It is also a message of solidarity and a wish of strength to the Seattle Grand Jury Resisters, those currently incarcerated and those not. Finally, this act announces our participation in the game of CAMOVER, called for by comrades in Germany.”
