Bring Back the Incandescent Bulb

Courtesy of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, a cheap, reliable, and comforting 130-year-old invention would begin to be phased out in 2012 through 2014. The switch is to be permanently thrown to "off" on Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb, unless H.R. 91, Republican Joe Barton’s (Texas) newly introduced legislation will see the light of day. The Better Use of Light Bulbs Act would repeal provisions in the 2007 law, PL 110-140, and reinstate the disfavored incandescent bulb as a consumer choice for lighting homes.

The debate for some centers around the energy efficiency of the incandescent bulbs vs. compact fluorescents and LEDs. The supposed longer life-span and estimates of 50 to 70 percent less electricity usage of the CFLs -- leaving LEDs out of the discussion for now due to enormous expense and technical glitches -- is highly touted. Unfortunately, they are more expensive to manufacture, are mostly manufactured outside the United States, cast a harsh “cool white” light on surroundings, emit UV rays, take minutes to warm up, and contain mercury -- a danger to people that causes disposal problems of EPA proportions and environmental concerns. The mercury in one CFL bulb, 5 milligrams, is enough to contaminate up to 6,000 gallons of water. Low-mercury bulbs can still contaminate more than 1,000 gallons of water, as a Stanford University study revealed.

In defense of the incandescent, users say they prefer the warmer, softer light that resembles the actual spectrum of the sun more closely, the instant on and off, lack of blinking as exhibited by some CFLs, and the fact that the bulbs have little impact on their environment making them a far more stable product and easily disposed of.

There’s also the point that the energy used to manufacture a CFL is far greater then for an incandescent bulb, perhaps to the point of canceling out any real energy savings by the time it’s screwed into the light fixture and turned on. Bulb application affects the life span of both the incandescent and the CFL. Incandescents take better to being snapped on and off frequently, but if the same frequency occurs for a CFL a higher burnout rate is the result, something comparison tests don’t take into account but homeowners have come to realize.

But should the debate focus on the positive and negative aspects of these different kinds of light bulbs that, in the scope of everyday energy consumption use very little?

The regulations imposed in 2007 were specific in mandating lower energy usage, imposing energy consumption levels on individuals, something quite unconstitutional.

It should be left up to the individual what kind of lighting they choose for their homes and businesses, and how long they leave the lights on or off. Regulating a level of efficiency for any product that eliminates that product from store shelves is in effect a ban on that product. Hence, the government removes that product, giving a competitive edge to other products, and the companies, owners, and countries that manufacture them.

Help H.R. 91 receive a speedy review by the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Energy and Power members. Contact your Representative and Senators and let them know you are skeptical of the highly touted advantages of compact fluorescent bulbs, urging them to stand up for personal freedom of choice by bringing H.R. 91 to the floor for a vote.

"Update on my dad, Richard Crawford, His liver is failing and we aren't sure how much longer he will be with us. They have moved him to a regular room (321) at the Heart and Vascular Center Augusta. Mom has already said that lieu of flowers she is going to ask that donations be made to the Sam Davis Youth Camp, because dad believes in it so much. He and Stephen were the first ones to really promote the camp. Dad was a Brigade Commander and he and Stephen visited every camp in his brigade promoting the SDYC, the following year in Crawfordville (how appropriate since my maiden name is Crawford) SC had the largest number and of those from SC his brigade had the most.

Dad made it a point to take Stephen with him to every camp so Stephen could talk about how great the program was and how much they learned. It is dads love for all things Southern and his Confederate Heritage that myself, John, my niece Anna, and nephew Stephen will be at the Battle of Aiken, Saturday working, Dad gave us our "marching orders" and we were told to be there to help. He has said how many times he hates he is going to miss it.

Dad's bilirubin keeps going up so he will eventually just go to sleep and not wake up. It could be days, it could be weeks or months, it's all up to when the Lord decides it's his time. In the meantime I ask that you remember us in your prayers.

Well-documented is the existence of large numbers of black slaveowners in the antebellum United States. In South Carolina, free Negro masters utilized the labor of their slaves for profit, hiring them out as simple labor or trained artisans. Though much is made of the benevolence of black slaveowners toward their kin, author (below) Larry Koger dismisses this as improbable as most black slaveowners were mulattoes (83.1%) while nearly all their slaves were dark-skinned (90%). He asked, “where was the kinship?”

“There were black masters in every State where slavery existed (including the North), many black Americans of the antebellum period believed that slavery was a viable economic system. In Louisiana, Maryland, South Carolina and Virginia, free blacks owned more than 10,000 slaves, according to the Federal census of 1850. Many of the black masters in the Lower South were large planters who owned scores of slaves and planted large quantities of cotton, rice, and sugar cane. In 1860, for example, Auguste Donatto, a free colored planter of St. Landry Parish in Loiusiana, owned 70 slaves who worked 500 acres of land and produced 100 bales of cotton. About 600 miles to the east…in the county of Sumter, South Carolina, William Ellison, a free colored planter, used the labor of 70 slaves to cultivate 100 bales of cotton in 1861. {in the same State], Robert Michael Collins and Margaret Mitchell Harris used their slaves to till the soil of Santee Plantation and grew 240,000 pounds of rice in 1849.

In 1860, Madame Ciprien Ricard and her son Pierre Ricard , free mulattoes of Ibeville Parish, owned 168 slaves. The joint operation of mother and son used the labor of slaves to produce 515 hogsheads of sugar in 1859. Not all of the black masters were planters, nor were they all from the South. In 1830 the city of New York had eight black slaveowners who owned 17 slaves. The institution of black slaveowning was widespread, stretching as far north as New York and as far south as Florida, extending westward into Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Missouri.

Where did these free black masters come from? Many…were former slaves…emancipated for meritorious military duty, faithful service, saving a life, and other such reasons. Many of the colored slaveowners inherited slaves from black relatives as well as white kinsfolk. A few black masters owned slaves in West Africa and transported their slaves to the New World.”

Allen West V. A Koran Wielding CAIR Director

At a townhall meeting hosted by Congressman Allen West on Monday evening in Pompano Beach, the Q&A segment of the meeting featured a Koran wielding Nezar Hamze, Executive Director of the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR). Hamze confronted Congressman West and asked him to point out where in the Koran does it give marching orders to Muslims “to carry out attacks against Americans and innocent people”. West quickly pointed out that the Koran was written long before America even existed and that it does indeed tell believers to kill infidels, and then proceeded to chronicle a lengthy list of historical Muslim acts of aggression. Congressman West closed his retort by referencing the Fort Hood shootings and 9-11 attacks, saying that his first hand experiences on the battlefield has given him insight into the tactics that Islamists use before telling Hamze not to “try to blow sunshine up my butt” with his criticism of him.
