'Civil War' in Alaska

Civil War Confederate warship, CCS Shenandoah
Drawing from Captian Waddell found inside his journal

Months after the end of the Civil War, Confederate warship CSS Shenandoah hadn't gotten the memo.

A 1160-ton screw steam cruiser was launched at Glasgow, Scotland, in August 1863 as the civilian steamer Sea King. After the Confederate Navy secretly purchased her, she was put to sea in October 1864, under the cover story that she was headed for India on a commercial voyage. Sea King rendezvoused at sea off Madeira with another ship, which brought Confederate Navy officers, some crew members, heavy guns and other equipment needed to refit her as a warship. This work was completed at sea under the supervision of C.S. Navy First Lieutenant (later Commander) James Iredell Waddell, who became the cruiser's first Commanding Officer when she was commissioned as CSS Shenandoah on 19 October.

"This is America. That can't happen here."

Via David "As an American Jew, I can attest to this utter aversion to the ownership of firearms by my relatives.  Every.  Single. One.  This goes far beyond their ingrained liberalism, already painful to me.  But this article "rang true".
When I bring up the coming economic collapse, war, the prudence of having even a small stockpile of food, and so on, they are eager - desperate - to change the topic.  It's as though they don't want to admit such a thing could happen again.  But that's the point of "Never again!"... to ENSURE it doesn't happen again.
There was a TV series a decade or so ago; "The Dark Side", whose intro had the voice-over "We live in the sunlit world of what we believe to be reality...".  And that's the point.  Most people, including myself, do not WANT to admit there is evil in the world, that things can fall apart, and so on.  Even people who have direct experience with this can swim in that river in Egypt.
For example, my in-laws are visiting.  My wife showed them the stockpile I'm building.  Understand, these people (including my wife) lived through the collapse of the USSR and the hardships that resulted.  Yet they think I'm crazy.  I, an American-born middle class kid who has never known a day of true hardship, grasp what's coming and what could be the case for my family instinctively - without needing to experience it first.
My in-laws, even though not Jewish, also are of the Shtetl mentality.  Hopefully I can inculcate into my kids some good-old, Yankee ingenuity as well as raw, American toughness and individuality."

Not just for years but for decades I have been perplexed by the fact that American Jews are overwhelmingly anti-gun. Now they are not just indifferent to guns as they were when I was growing up 60 years ago, but today they are genuinely hostile to them. They are both in leadership positions of the movement to ban private ownership of all firearms as well as at the grass-roots level individually in favor of gun bans by over 10 to 1. After much thought I have arrived at what appears to be the explanation for this cultural aversion to firearms by most American Jews, and since I have never seen anything like this explanation in print anywhere, I thought it worth writing the following essay describing what for want of a better term I refer to as "the shtetl mentality."

I was raised in New York City and later in a New Jersey suburb of New York by Jewish parents who had no interest in firearms, nor did any members of my extended family. Like most boys in those pre-PC days I had toy guns, but BB guns were absolutely forbidden.

When I asked for one when I was 8, I was not told, "You're too young" or "Maybe when you're older." I was told, "Not in my house." As far as I knew, I was the only Jewish boy who asked for one.

Raphael Semmes and the Confederate Navy

On October 17, 1862 William E. Gladstone, British Chancellor of the Exchequer, delivered a speech at New Castle concerning the widening conflict in America. He said:

“We may have our opinions about slavery; we may be for or against the South; but there is no doubt that Jefferson Davis and other leaders of the South have made an army. They are making, it appears, a navy and they have made what is more than either – they have made a nation…” at which point he was interrupted by loud and protracted cheering.”

Was Gladstone’s remark concerning the fledgling Confederate States Navy accurate or convenient hyperbole useful in advancing his party’s interests in the next round of elections for Parliament by catering to the substantial Pro-Southern block of British voters?

Around 100 people had already arrived at Stone Mountain Park for a rally celebrating the Confederate flag by around 9:45 a.m. Saturday, and traffic on nearby I-285 and U.S. 78 was backed up for miles.

Caravans from all over Georgia bore unwavering rebel flags as they streamed into the park’s Yellow Daisy parking lot for the day-long event, which approximately 1,000 people are expected to attend, according to a Facebook event titled “Ga. State Flag Rally.” The event page includes instructions for people who plan to attend the rally, such as meeting times and locations, and lists of rules like these:

Y'all,

In addition to the two I have flown on my front porch posts for the past 18 years I just wanted y'all to know that I'm taking my own advice in the following poem and now have a 25' flag pole at the very front of my property, dead center of my front door with a Confederate 3rd National Flag flying on it. Only reason it's not a battle flag is that I had already given all my Battle Flags to others before the pole went up and they are a bit hard to come by these days. Ruffin has surpassed the 50,000 flag mark in sales and still having them imported by the container load from China!

For those of you who have not yet let Benedict Arnold Bentley know how you feel, I urge you to bombard his office with calls and get those flags up and flying. If our socialist enemies saw flags flying in every direction, the statement that that would make would do more than anything else we can do to put an end to the present cultural genocide of the Southern people. Remember to vote with your dollar, don't spend your hard earned yankee fiat money with any person or business who has dissed our flag or heritage! A photo of my new flagpole will be on Facebook, soon as I get the sign up that goes with it!

Y'all have a great Dixie day!

"Keep it in their Face"

Raise your Southern Crosses high,
Fly them tall in wind, and sky!
For every one they vote away,
Raise 3 more the very next day!

Fly it from your housetops,
Plant it in your sod.
Let the Lefties know,
It's a symbol of our God.

Fly one on your home,
fly one on your lawn.
Keep it waving proudly,
from night to dusky dawn.

Fly one from your car,
or wherever there's a space;
Keep it flying night and day
forever, in their face!

And from this day remember,
what's written on this page;
that those who hate our Southern ways,
deserve our Southern rage!

You have no voice in politics,
your votes have brought you naught:
you gave them a majority,
and look at what you got!

And, upon the stupid tube,
your voice will not be heard,
The media is all controlled,
they'll have the final word.
Your vote will only bring you more,
of what you've just endured!

So now it comes on down to this;
the only vote you have,
is the dollar in your pocket,
and to fly your Rebel flag!

Pensions and Medicare after an Economic Collapse

"......... we ended up with a society where being unemployed, or being a single mother with two or three children by the time you were fifteen was a wise choice financially speaking."
I have read and studied your book (The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving the Economic Collapse) thoroughly about the 2001 Economic Collapse in Argentina. I have searched through the book and your blog and there is an area that was not touched upon that is of great concern to me and to others my age.

What happened to the Social Security payments that retired people were receiving. Did payments stop all together - forever ? Was it halted temporarily and then resumed after some time ? If it was resumed was it at the original amount or at a reduced payment rate.

Navy to Charge Officer Who Fired on Islamist During Chattanooga Terror Attack

A report at The Navy Times in July confirmed that one of the Marines shot during the Chattanooga terrorist attack exchanged fire with the terrorist. Navy Lt. Cmdr Timothy White also shot back at the terrorist.

But rather than being celebrated as a hero, Lt. Commander White may be charged for discharging a firearm on federal property.

Allen West reported this week that Lt. Commander Timothy White

County replaces Confederate Battle Flag, but critics still not happy

Via Billy

When Walton County officials voted to remove a Confederate battle flag that flew near the courthouse, it was not quite the victory for which local activists had hoped. Some residents of the Florida county complained that the flag chosen to replace the outgoing banner was equally – if not more – offensive.

County commissioners voted unanimously to raise the first Confederate States of America flag, using a design with seven stars as a temporary placeholder until they can obtain one with the preferred 13-star layout.
