Record Consecutive Treasury Dump From Fed's Custody Account

While there were few nuggets worth mentioning in yesterday's H.4.1 update, one item is certainly worth noting. After we pointed out last week when we noted that there was a record monthly dump of Treasury paper from the Fed's custodial account amounting to some $69 billion, the week ended January 4 has seen yet another outflow, this time amounting to $9 billion in US Treasurys. This is the 5th week in a row of foreigners selling US paper, and while it has yet to match the record 6 weeks of outflows from October (discussed here), the consolidated outflow notional is now a record high at $77 bilion, higher than the previous record of $52 billion.

Needless to say banks from around the world are repatriating dollars. The question is what they are converting the USD into, and how much longer will the go on for: the last thin the US can afford is a wholesale dumping of its Treasurys. Because as the chart below vividly demonstrates, the traditional diagonal rise in foreign holdings of US paper has not only pleateaued, but it is in fact declining: a first in the history of the post-globalization world.

Justice Department’s political action Civil rights laws are exploited to finance liberal groups

The Washington Times
Verbatim Post

The Justice Department has been empowered to use millions of dollars intended to go to victims of racial discrimination to enrich pressure groups with close White House ties. It’s another revelation of the means the Obama administration is using to divert funds to political cronies.

Information obtained by the public interest group Judicial Watch has exposed the details of this latest shady deal. On Dec. 28, the United States District Court for the Central District of California issued a consent order in the case of the United States v. Countrywide Financial Corporation et al. Under the terms of the settlement, Countrywide will pay $335 million to 200,000 blacks and Hispanics who took out home loans between 2004 and 2008. The Justice Department claims they were charged higher interest rates than white borrowers not because of poor credit scores but solely because of their race. The payment is intended to “compensate allegedly aggrieved persons for monetary and other damages they may have suffered.”

The aggrieved parties may not be the only beneficiaries of this substantial payout. According to the terms of the consent order, any money not distributed within two years will be given to “qualified organizations that provide services including credit and housing counseling, financial literacy and other related programs targeted at African-Americans and Hispanics.” This could include “non-profit community organizations that provide education, counseling and other assistance to low-income and minority borrowers … .”

The trick of course is defining what organizations are “qualified.” This matter is left to the Justice Department, which admits there are no particular guidelines governing who gets the handouts, and no follow-up as to how the money is actually being spent. This is a shocking lack of accountability, and the practice of giving awards to interest groups that weren’t parties to the original complaint is an affront to the American sense of justice.

Organizations beholden to the Democratic Party and to President Obama in particular stand to gain millions of dollars, which could then be shifted into use for political purposes. It’s another manifestation of the intentional, institutional corruption of American politics. The public has been forced to fund corporate handouts and sweetheart deals to political donors such as occurred in the Solyndra loan debacle. All these efforts are aimed at propping up those in power and seeking maximum benefits for their friends. It comes at the expense of working Americans, the economy and the legitimacy of the political system.

The Countrywide deal is the Justice Department’s latest contribution to reducing the United States to the status of a banana republic.

‘It was night and low visibility, but I saw a guy with an AK-47 lit up by the porch light in a doorway about 400 meters away. I watched him through the sights. He looked like just another Iraqi. I hit him low in the stomach and dropped him.’ – Specialist James Wilks, 25, from Fort Worth, Texas. Concealment is key to becoming a great sniper. Highly trained marksmen who can shoot accurately from incredible distances with specialized training in high-precision rifles. In addition, they are trained in camouflage, field craft, infiltration, reconnaissance and observation, making them perhaps the most feared military presence in a war. Below is my list of top ten snipers in history and some of the greatest shots ever fired.

Former Governor (1845-1849), United States Senator (1840-1843), Secretary of the Navy (1850-52), and 1852 vice-presidential candidate with Winfield Scott, William A. Graham gave five of his seven sons to fight for North Carolina’s independence. He served as a State senator 1854-1866, and member of the Confederate Congress 1864-1865.

Major John W. Graham organized Company D (Graham Rifles) of the 56th North Carolina Regiment, with brother and fellow officer Captain Robert D. Graham. The 56th North Carolina fought through the battles of Gum Swamp, Plymouth , Drewry's Bluff , the Petersburg trenches south of the James River, and Appomattox.

Captain Joseph Graham served with the Charlotte Artillery, Company C, 10th North Carolina Troops. This battery participated in the many battles of the Army of Northern Virginia – across Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

Major William A. Graham fought with Company K, 2nd North Carolina Cavalry, seeing action around New Bern, Kinston and Washington; Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Hanover, Gettysburg, Hanover Court House, Haws Tavern, Wilson’s Farm, Hampton’s Cattle Raid, Five Forks, and Appomattox. After the war he served as a State senator and agricultural commissioner.

Captain James A. Graham commanded Company G (Orange Guards), 27th North Carolina Regiment under Col. John R. Cook. A student at Chapel Hill when he entered service in April 1861 in the Orange Guards, his unit saw action at New Bern, Sharpsburg, Wilderness (severely wounded), Fort Euliss, Harper’s Ferry, Bristol Station, Hatcher’s Run, Mine Run, Southerland’s Tavern and Appomattox.

Godfather Politics
Verbatim Post

When John Harrison was a senior at Druid Hills High School in DeKalb County, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, he was miffed when he was rebuffed by parents at a private school when they refused to purchase a discount coupon for Domino’s Pizza. The money was to go to his public school’s art program. They told him, “We already contribute through taxes, and we pay for our children to go to school, so why don’t you hit up your own parents?” A little harsh, if it was really said that way, but right on the money nevertheless. Ann Coulter couldn’t have said it any better.

Young Mr. Harrison was “shocked and appalled” at the curt response he received. Well, I was shocked and appalled, but not surprised, at what I read next from the naïve public school senior who doesn’t own a home or pay very much in taxes and is on the domestic dole of his parents:

Paying taxes is a civic duty, and these people were arrogant enough to view their taxes as a contribution, not a responsibility.

Excuse me? Paying taxes may be a civic duty, but that doesn’t answer the question as to what things taxes should be collected to fund. My property is taxed to pay for the education of other people’s children. I don’t consider that a “civic duty.” I consider school taxes as a way to promote the government status quo. Public (government) schools promote government.

Let’s suppose that a majority of people decide that cars, food, clothing, and houses, like education, are necessities that should be funded through taxation. In fact, a case can certainly be made that food and clothing are more important than a formal education. And if you don’t have a car, it’s not easy to get a job. I should have added a phone to the list. Without a phone, how will you get a prospective employer to let you know that the job is yours? Would it be my “civic duty” to pay taxes to fund these newly established rights? If not, why not? Of course, there are quite a few people out there who believe people should be taxed to pay for these things.

In Cobb County, $63 million is going to be spent so lap top computers can be given to all teachers and students. Am I being arrogant because I don’t believe it’s my “civic duty” to be taxed so someone else’s child can have a lap top computer? If parents want their children to have a lap top, I suggest that they spend their own money. Better yet, have their children work to earn enough money to make the purchase. If lap tops are so important to a child’s education, then families need to budget enough money to pay for them. Don’t compel me to be responsible for the wants of others and then make me feel guilty for not performing my “civic duty.”

One letter writer, in responding to Mr. Harrison’s guest editorial, described students who attend private schools as “BMW-driving, uniform-wearing, spoiled elitists.” There a number of high tuition private schools in the Atlanta area, but most private schools have relatively low tuition. I’ve seen what students drive at the local government schools. BMWs, Jaguars, and even a few Corvettes come streaming out of the parking lots after school. Are these “spoiled elitists” as well? When we sent our children to non-government schools, my wife and I worked and went without so we could afford it. We drove our cars for nearly ten years. I finally gave up my 1987 Honda Accord after 267,000 miles. Sacrifice was a regular vocabulary word in our house.

Spending someone else’s money is always more profitable than spending your own. Public schools, by their very existence, will assure future generations that socialism will prevail in America. George Orwell could not have said it better: “Paying taxes to educate other people’s children is a civic duty.”

Arrogance of The State

Kent for Liberty
Verbatim Post

I have been called "arrogant" a time or two. Or ten. Usually because I wouldn't buy into someone else's (obviously flawed) argument. Or, because someone tried to hurt me and I, instead of reacting as they had expected, was amused. Above it. That sometimes led to a "smirk" as well.

But that's amateurish arrogance compared to governments.

Governments all seem to think they can get away with anything. Forever. Sure, they all do for a time, but none ever have forever, and none ever will.

Governments ignore their own "permission to exist documents"- their "hall pass"- and will kidnap or even kill those who point out the violations.

Governments decide they own you and can tell you what to ingest, whether you can travel (and how, how fast, and what you are "consenting to" in order to travel at all), they rape you, they demand a ransom to "allow" you to keep some of your own property. They forbid self defense and the tools to carry it out effectively. They declare that unless they "educate" the desire to learn out of your children, you are abusing them. They punish you if you know a "law" is wrong and refuse to convict a person for violating it. They decide if you can leave the territory they have fenced off, and steal most of your property if you get permission to go for good. They tell you (and your government-licensed doctor) how your ailments will be allowed to be "treated". They turn local police into militarized occupation forces instead of "peace officers"- who in the best of circumstances were still a useless drain on humanity before they became an open threat to it. They prohibit and punish basic human activities like growing food, trading, sex, hunting, being left alone... and demand you get permission from them for the things you are allowed to do anyway. And, they demand to know every detail of your life so they will know when you aren't doing as you are told. The list of real, current offenses could go on endlessly.

They act as though there will never be any consequences that will result from all this arrogance. Certainly none from the "Mundanes".

Yet, there is a limit. Not to what governments will try to get away with, but how much their targets will accept before they strike back.

There will always come a time when more threats bring less compliance rather than more. When harsher penalties bring more hatred and less obedience. When more surveillance results in too much meaningless data and smarter acts of defiance. When puppeticians and bureaucrats cease to be able to protect their worthless hides through "laws" and certain punishment. When enough people finally see The State, and its supporters, for the parasites they have always truly been, and say "Time's Up!"

I would hate to be on the side of the tyrants when that day dawns.

Advice to a Generic Candidate

Last night on the lobotomy box I encountered yet another candidate for the presidency, a Mr. Sanctorum, threatening to make war on Iran. I can't decide whether the idea is more frightening than fascinating, or fascinating than frightening. I do suggest that the combined candidates do not have the military competence of a stuffed bear. Given that the principlal business of the United States is war and preparation for it, do we want a martial analphabetic in charge? One does not let children play with chain saws. (From all of this I exempt Ron Paul, who appears to be sane.)

To save the republic, if any, from another routine military disaster, I offer the following thoughts.

To begin, I will ask the following questions of the candidates, and for that matter of Mr. Obama, and of the Secretary of Defense, a generic bureaucrat.

Can you explain: Convergence zones, base bleed, Kursk, range-gate pull-off, artillery at Dien Bien Phu, IR cross-over, Tet and queen sacrifice, Brahmos 2, CIWIS, supercruise, side-lobe penetration, seven-eighty-twice gear, super-cavitating torpedoes, phased arrays, pulse Doppler, the width of Hormuz versus the range of Iranian cruise missiles, DU, discarding sabot, frequency agility, Chobham armor, and pseudo-random PRF?

These, gentlemen, are the small talk of serious students of the military. Here I mean men like David Isby, author of such books as Weapons and Tactics of the Soviet Army for Jane's, which you likely have never heard of, or William S. Lind, probably the best military mind (though, or because, not a soldier), that I have encountered. If you are unfamiliar with them, and with the things listed above, you are unfamiliar with the military. Yet you campaign for possession of the trigger.

Perhaps a little humility, perish the thought, and a little self-examination might be in order.

Peering into your own depths, you will probably find that the humility does not come easily. In my decades of covering the armed services, I noticed among men a belief in their innate jock-strap competency regarding wars. Men who would readily admit ignorance of petroleum geology, ophthalmology, or ancient Sumerian grammar nonetheless believe that they grasp matters military. Usually they do not. In particular, they have an utterly unexamined belief in America's military invincibility.

When girly-men try to sound tough, it’s funny. But when they have the power to pass laws, it’s tragic.

Patrick Buchanan’s Future at MSNBC Is Murky, Network’s Chief Says

Via Matthew

Truth is verboten

Mr. Buchanan argues in “Suicide of a Superpower” — which has the subtitle “Will America Survive to 2025?” — that the “European and Christian core of our country is shrinking,” which is damaging the nation “ethnically, culturally, morally, politically.” The book also contains a chapter titled “The End of White America.”

Mr. Griffin said, “The ideas he put forth aren’t really appropriate for national dialogue, much less the dialogue on MSNBC.” The network has set out to brand itself as a network designed to appeal to progressive and liberal viewers.

On his Web site, Mr. Buchanan reprints part of an essay from Chronicles magazine titled “The Mob vs. the Statesman” that defends the book: “For all the hue and cry over Buchanan’s supposed ‘hate,’ the emotion that runs through ‘Suicide of a Superpower’ is not hate, but love. Buchanan sees the country he grew up in and loved passing away, and he wants to raise his voice in its defense.”
