There comes a time to put away childish things.

Joseph Sobran is no longer with us, but was a wonderful writer for Southern Partisan as well as many other sources. He is truly missed and may you rest in peace, Sir.

Quotes below from NamSouth

"Several of Africa's proudest empires were built on the sale of slaves. For centuries Africa's chief export was human beings... So, it's rather comical for American blacks to sentimentalize Africa and stress that they are 'African Americans' while cursing the Confederate flag as a symbol of slavery. Africa has a much better claim to be such a symbol. Slavery still exists there, in Sudan and Mauritania and probably elsewhere."
-- Joe Sobran, "Slavery in Perspective," May 31, 2001

"Altering the Constitution has become the daily business of the Federal Government which the document is supposed to guide and limit. Both Congress and the judiciary assume, and exercise, countless powers they aren't entitled to."
-- Joseph Sobran

"Since the Constitution doesn’t forbid the states to secede, the North found it necessary to violate the Constitution in order to suppress Southern independence. Lincoln was forced to usurp legislative powers by raising troops and money and by suspending the writ of habeas corpus; when Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled such acts unconstitutional, Lincoln wrote an order for Taney’s arrest! He never followed through on that, but he did illegally arrest 31 antiwar members of the Maryland legislature and install a puppet government. He went on to crush freedom of speech and press throughout the North. Such was Lincoln’s idea of 'preserving the Constitution' and 'government of the people, by the people, for the people.'"
-- Joseph Sobran

"If you want the government to intervene domestically you’re a liberal, if you want the government to intervene abroad you’re a conservative, if you want the government to intervene both domestically and abroad you’re a moderate, and if you don’t want the government to intervene either domestically or abroad you’re an extremist."
--Joe Sobran

 The Reluctant Anarchist

My arrival (very recently) at philosophical anarchism has disturbed some of my conservative and Christian friends. In fact, it surprises me, going as it does against my own inclinations.

As a child I acquired a deep respect for authority and a horror of chaos. In my case the two things were blended by the uncertainty of my existence after my parents divorced and I bounced from one home to another for several years, often living with strangers. A stable authority was something I yearned for.

Meanwhile, my public-school education imbued me with the sort of patriotism encouraged in all children in those days. I grew up feeling that if there was one thing I could trust and rely on, it was my government. I knew it was strong and benign, even if I didn’t know much else about it. The idea that some people — Communists, for example — might want to overthrow the government filled me with horror.

G.K. Chesterton, with his usual gentle audacity, once criticized Rudyard Kipling for his “lack of patriotism.” Since Kipling was renowned for glorifying the British Empire, this might have seemed one of Chesterton’s “paradoxes”; but it was no such thing, except in the sense that it denied what most readers thought was obvious and incontrovertible.

Chesterton, himself a “Little Englander” and opponent of empire, explained what was wrong with Kipling’s view: “He admires England, but he does not love her; for we admire things with reasons, but love them without reason. He admires England because she is strong, not because she is English.” Which implies there would be nothing to love her for if she were weak.

Of course Chesterton was right. You love your country as you love your mother — simply because it is yours, not because of its superiority to others, particularly superiority of power.

This seems axiomatic to me now, but it startled me when I first read it. After all, I was an American, and American patriotism typically expresses itself in superlatives. America is the freest, the mightiest, the richest, in short the greatest country in the world, with the greatest form of government — the most democratic. Maybe the poor Finns or Peruvians love their countries too, but heaven knows why — they have so little to be proud of, so few “reasons.” America is also the most envied country in the world. Don’t all people secretly wish they were Americans?

That was the kind of patriotism instilled in me as a boy, and I was quite typical in this respect. It was the patriotism of supremacy. For one thing, America had never lost a war — I was even proud that America had created the atomic bomb (providentially, it seemed, just in time to crush the Japs) — and this is why the Vietnam war was so bitterly frustrating. Not the dead, but the defeat! The end of history’s great winning streak!

As I grew up, my patriotism began to take another form, which it took me a long time to realize was in tension with the patriotism of power. I became a philosophical conservative, with a strong libertarian streak. I believed in government, but it had to be “limited” government — confined to a few legitimate purposes, such as defense abroad and policing at home. These functions, and hardly any others, I accepted, under the influence of writers like Ayn Rand and Henry Hazlitt, whose books I read in my college years.

The Barrel Will Be Hot

 https://spokelement.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/the-founders-would-have-been-done-by-now.jpg

Evidence mounts that the federal government is corrupt and is operating outside the Constitution. I might write about it. Others might write about it. But when Sheriffs across the land increasingly vocalize their resistance to unconstitutional laws; when states pass legislation to refuse to comply with federal restrictions on guns, we are not just a bunch of nuts whining about gun laws.

The federal government, particularly Barack Obama and Eric Holder might want to pay attention here. They are losing the PR battle when it comes to the Second Amendment. Instead of making the supporters of the Second Amendment look like nuts who just want to kill people, they are convincing the other half of the nation that the government is full of nuts who just want to kill people.

It wasn't so long ago when those of us in the patriot/liberty community spoke about resistance we were shrugged off. When we spoke of unconstitutional laws we were ignored. When we called out the President and the Attorney General as Marxists who wanted to disarm the American people to force their collectivist policies on people we were shouted down as unreasonable and delusional.

That isn't happening now.

The Truth Comes Out: NASA Knew Of Damage To Columbia – Didn’t Tell Astronauts

 ht_columbia_space_shuttle_disaster_crew_thg_130131_wg

Ten years after the fact, it has come out that the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) knew that the Space Shuttle orbiter Columbia was damaged in orbit, but chose not to tell the astronauts.

Wayne Hale, who later became space shuttle program manager, struggled with this question after the deaths of the Columbia crew 10 years ago. Recently he wrote about the debate in his blog, recalling a meeting to discuss the dilemma:

“After one of the MMTs (Mission Management Team) when possible damage to the orbiter was discussed, he (Flight Director Jon Harpold) gave me his opinion: ‘You know, there is nothing we can do about damage to the TPS (Thermal Protection System). If it has been damaged it’s probably better not to know. I think the crew would rather not know. Don’t you think it would be better for them to have a happy successful flight and die unexpectedly during entry than to stay on orbit, knowing that there was nothing to be done, until the air ran out?”

NC: Burr on the Second

http://www.politifake.org/image/political/1212/guns-kill-vik-battaile-politics-1355814029.jpg

As you are aware, the issue of gun control and the Second Amendment has been at the forefront of our national dialogue lately.  Some in Washington, including President Obama, are seeking to address violence in our society by restricting the rights of law-abiding Americans to own firearms.  This is not the right way to address this issue.  I am open to having a conversation about ways in which our nation can address mental health issues and reduce violence, but I will not stand by while the President and others try to restrict the rights of law-abiding American citizens.

I will fight any effort to further infringe on the Second Amendment rights of American citizens, such as Senator Feinstein's proposed ban on so-called "assault weapons."  Put simply, the proposals being put forward on based on emotions, and that isn't the way to legislate about anything.

I’m a “militia extremist.” What are you?

Two weeks ago I wrote a post entitled “Shock the system: Just one example of how the government could lose a civil conflict.”

It was written after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, acting with the NY legislature, violated the New York State Constitution by ramming through the NY SAFE Act without giving legislators time to read it, or for constituents to respond.

This clearly unconstitutional act was a brazen assault on the rights of citizens, and inspired the head of a New York Sheriff’s PBA to blast the governor and legislature in an extraordinary letter I posted yesterday, where he pointed out the naked unconstitutionality of the law, and the dangers it posed to the law enforcement officers stuck between dictators and a citizenry that quite frankly intends to ignore the law.

“Shock the system” was written with one explicit goal: to remind those elected officials (in New York in particular) that their powers are not unlimited, and that all humans—not just Americans— have a natural right of rebellion against tyranny.

This right is no small thing. It is a right well-theorized by the giants of western political theory such as Locke, and of the common law such as Blackstone, both of which heavily influenced our own Founding Fathers. This right was part of the philosophical justification for the American Revolution.

UPDATE: Armed Guard Disarms Shooter At Atlanta Middle School

Update: When news broke that a 14-year old student had been shot at an Atlanta middle school on the morning of Jan. 31, reports did not mention that the shooter had been disarmed by an armed guard at the school. But Atlanta Police Chief George Turner is now saying the shooter was in fact disarmed by an armed guard working at the school.

In other words, today's shooting proves the point the NRA has been emphasizing since Sandy Hook Elementary--"The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

Department of Homeland Security Targets Gun Collector

Via Eric

 adamsguns.com

KRQE in Albuquerque, New Mexico, reports that the Department of Homeland Security – the federal agency initially established to protect the United States from terrorists and respond to natural disasters – has used its ICE division to bust a gun collector.

Federal Homeland Security Investigation agents raided the home of Robert Adams on Thursday and seized 548 handguns and 317 rifles from the collector. They also raided his business and took an additional 599 handguns.

KRQE reports that Adams did not violate any laws and was not charged with any crimes. It said the DHS, however, is not finished with Adams and he may be charged with gun smuggling, tax evasion and violating importation laws.

The government spent yeas surveilling the gun collector and argues that his weapons are “not properly marked possibly to make the guns more valuable and to avoid paying high import taxes.”
KRQE reports the federal government is concerned “that no markings on the guns and missing documents mean the guns are not traceable by law enforcement.”

New Mexico does not regulate or specifically restrict the possession of firearms. Owners are not required to register or license firearms with the state.

Firearm or weapon?

OLEG VOLK
VERBATIM

NRA materials use the term firearm. That's the correct term in the context of safety and marksmanship training. In the context of gun control, the correct term is weapon.

Gun control is all about items usable as weapons. If it wasn't, then knives, sprays, even sticks wouldn't be so heavily regulated. It takes more legal hoops to get a baton permit in many states than to get one for a firearm. The 1938 Nazi prohibition on Jewish weapon ownership specifically mentioned sticks and batons as prohibited items. Predators know that sticks and stones can break their bones. Exhibit one: Goliath.

The rifle in the picture above could be a single shot benchrest gun in 6mm PPC or a four-shot .30-06 M70 of Carlos Hathcock fame or a 10-shot 50BMG from Serbu - to the foes of civilian gun ownership, all are anathema . They understand correctly that any one of these can send them to well-deserved hell. The only reason why we, the lawful gun owners, care about the details is that we value the defensive properties of small arms. An AR15 is much better for rebuffing determined close-range assaults by numerically superior foes than a single-shot Sharps. For sniping the enemies of individual freedom, almost any gun would do fine. That the gun owners of America haven't focused on that fact speaks volumes of their patience and forbearance.

That the gun control pushers are focusing on the defensive firearms also speaks volumes of their intentions. Since Americans have no access to other short-range defensive tools, they have to rely more heavily on guns and any reduction in the availability of proper equipment becomes immediately detrimental to our safety. Not only the guns become less capable, but our training immediately becomes mismatched to the equipment and must be renewed at great cost in money, ammunition and time.

IRS: Cheapest Obamacare Plan Will Be $20,000 Per Family

Via Cousin John

VERBATIM

In 2010 Barack Obama said insurance premiums will decrease by 3,000% so you should get a raise when Obamacare passes. The president also stated, “we can cut the average family’s premium by about $2,500 per year.” In 2012, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) went so far as to say about Obamacare, “everybody will have lower rates.”

A simple question. Do any of these people have conversations with one another before they spout off with this nonsensical twaddle?
IRS: Cheapest Obamacare Plan Will Be $20,000 Per Family:
“In a final regulation issued Wednesday, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) assumed that under Obamacare the cheapest health insurance plan available in 2016 for a family will cost $20,000 for the year. Under Obamacare, Americans will be required to buy health insurance or pay a penalty to the IRS. The IRS’s assumption that the cheapest plan for family of five will cost $20,000 per year is found in examples the IRS gives to help people understand how to calculate the penalty they will need to pay the government if they do not buy a mandated health plan. “The annual national…”
