Is Secession Treason?

A review of With Malice Toward Some: Treason and Loyalty in the Civil War Era by William A. Blair (University of North Carolina Press, 2014) and Secession on Trial: The Treason Prosecution of Jefferson Davis by Cynthia Nicoletti (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

 

Was the act of secession in 1860-61 treason? This is one of the more important and lasting questions of the War. If so, then the lenient treatment of Confederate officers, political figures, and even the soldiers themselves following the War was a great gesture of magnanimity by a conquering foe never seen in the annals of Western Civilization. If not, then the entire War was an illegal and unconstitutional invasion of a foreign government with the express objective of maintaining a political community by force, an act that represented the antithesis of the American belief in self-government regardless of Abraham Lincoln’s professed admiration for government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

FBI Security Official Reacts to Tarmac Meeting: Job is To Protect Comey from Embarrassment

Judicial Watch today released 16 pages of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) documents related to the June 2016 tarmac meeting between former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and former President Bill Clinton showing involvement of the FBI’s former Chief of Counterespionage Peter Strzok.

The FBI originally informed Judicial Watch they could not locate any records related to the tarmac meeting.  However, in a related FOIA lawsuit, the Justice Department located emails in which Justice Department officials communicated with the FBI and wrote that they had communicated with the FBI.  As a result, by letter dated August 10, 2017, the FBI stated, “Upon further review, we subsequently determined potentially responsive documents may exist. As a result, your [FOIA] request has been reopened …”  This is the second batch of documents the FBI produced since telling Judicial Watch they had no tarmac-related records.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un Sign Document for ‘Complete Denuclearization’ of Korean Peninsula

 Four points of the Trump-Kim Declaration:

1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work towards the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
When reporters asked if Kim was prepared to denuclearize, Trump said that they would be “starting that process very quickly.”

Trump admitted it was fully possible that Kim would backtrack on his promise in 6-12 months.
“I think he will do these things,” he said, and added frankly, “I may be wrong. I may stand before you in six months and say, ‘Hey, I was wrong.’”
But Trump seemed optimistic about Kim’s intentions to shut down his nuclear programs, even though he admitted that it would take time.
“I think he will do it. I really believe it,” he said.

 China is looking to assert a more prominent role as “guarantor” of anticipated “symbolic deals” after negotiations between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un began in Singapore on Tuesday, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reports.
It is no secret that China helped to facilitate the historic June 12 Trump-Kim summit in Singapore. The U.S. has vowed to keep the pressure on North Korea until it agrees to denuclearize.

BERLIN –  German prosecutors say they've searched the home of a man suspected in a French investigation of a monument to a Nazi SS division in France.

The investigation centers on a memorial stone honoring the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division that was allegedly put up in January on private property near the eastern French village of Volmunster, easily visible to the public. French prosecutors are looking into suspected glorification of war crimes and crimes against humanity. French media reported that authorities quickly removed the memorial.

A German man who lives across the border in Puettlingen, identified only as K., was identified as the property's owner. Saarbruecken prosecutors said K.'s apartment was searched Monday and evidence seized. German prosecutors must now decide what material can be handed over to France.

Officially, the investigation into Trump/Russia collusion named “Crossfire Hurricane” did not begin until July 31st of 2016. But text has been released that refers to inserting spies into the Trump Campaign as early as December 28th of 2015!

Sara Carter is reporting that the DOJ reneged on a promise to hand over documents to Congress early Thursday morning. According to Carter, the DOJ has said they will only meet with the Gang of Eight, and likely during the Trump/North Korea summit.

Immigration Reform a Political Winner in 2018?

In 2006, liberal columnist Paul Krugman wrote that, “Immigration reduces the wages of domestic workers who compete with immigrants” and that “the fiscal burden of low-wage immigrants is also pretty clear.” His conclusion: “We’ll need to reduce the inflow of low-skill immigrants.”

Concerns about illegal aliens have taken a dramatic turn downward among Democrats, but it still remains an issue that could help elect office seekers who frame the issue to match voter angst.
