‘Face the Nation’ Edits Out Senator Cruz Condemning Obama’s ‘Abuse of Power'

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) appeared on CBS Face the Nation on Sunday morning and was met with a barrage of questions from host Bob Schieffer about his involvement in the government shutdown.

Apart from being the victim of Schieffer’s accusations that the Tea Party senator was to blame for the shutdown, it also appears that Mr. Cruz was the victim of editing by CBS.

Based on video from Senator Cruz’s YouTube page and what aired on today’s Face the Nation broadcast, the senator’s comments surrounding President Obama’s “abuse of power” were edited from the program. Instead what aired was a segment that ignored many of the senator’s complaints directed at President Obama. [See the aired and unaired videos below.]

China opens record breaking 4,000 ft long Bridge‏

Interesting pictures and a scary little tale at the end.

Aizhai Bridge in Hunan province is 336 m (1,102 ft.) high and has a 1,176 m (3,858 ft.) span. It connects two traffic tunnels in the mountains, cutting the time needed to traverse the canyon from 30 minutes to 1 minute. Construction took five years. Work finished at the end of last year, making it the world’s longest and highest suspension bridge.  Note that the person below above is 1,102 feet above the ground and is sweeping the dirt off this twenty first century Engineering marvel with a broom that was designed centuries ago and has no safety line.

Congress Secretly Approves U.S. Weapons Flow to 'Moderate' Syrian Rebels

 

Light arms supplied by the United States are flowing to "moderate" Syrian rebel factions in the south of the country and U.S. funding for months of further deliveries has been approved by Congress, according U.S. and European security officials.

The weapons, most of which are moving to non-Islamist Syrian rebels via Jordan, include a variety of small arms, as well as some more powerful weapons, such as anti-tank rockets.

The deliveries do not include weapons such as shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, known as MANPADs, which could shoot down military or civilian aircraft, the officials said.

The weapons deliveries have been funded by the U.S. Congress, in votes behind closed doors, through the end of government fiscal year 2014, which ends on September 30, two officials said.

KKK Member Sought To Build Anti-Muslim Weapon Of Mass Destruction 

Eric Feight pleaded guilty to domestic terrorism related charges on Monday and could now face 15 years in prison for trying to build an anti-Muslim X-ray cannon.

Feight, a member of the KKK was reportedly soliciting money from Jewish businessmen in order to build the X-ray cannon, which would be a radiological dispersal device and classified as a weapon of mass destruction. Feight and his co-conspirator Scott Crawford were charged with attempting to produce and use a radiological dispersal device, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, and distributing information relating to weapons of mass destruction.

Boycotting Tests Is Helping Stop Common Core

Across the country, parents and public school students are slowing the Common Core’s progress by refusing to take Common Core-aligned assessments. These efforts have caused some school administrators to cancel standardized testing.

Examples of the trend are plentiful in Washington, New York, Illinois, Oregon, Colorado, and Rhode Island. In one Washington school district, more than 80% of the parents refused to let their 4-year-olds take a “bubble style” test that is required by state law for teacher evaluations. The principal canceled the tests, because it would have been impossible to collect meaningful data.

Detroit dating game - A 43-year-old woman told police she was leaving a gas station when a man came behind her and put a gun to her head. The woman said her attacker forced her into a car, ripped off her clothes and began burning her face with a blow torch. Police say the victim stabbed the man in the eye with a screwdriver and was able to get away and call for help. She’s currently hospitalized in stable condition. The suspect fled the scene in a small, 4-door, beige vehicle. He’s described as a black male with a dark complexion, in his early to mid-20s, about 6’2″ tall and 185 pounds.

Gun Control Ad Starring Gabrielle Giffords to Air Before State of the Union

In a commercial set to run just before and after President Obama's January 28 State of the Union (SOTU) address, Gabrielle Giffords looks into the camera and says, "Congress is afraid of the gun lobby."

According to the Associated Press , Giffords will push background checks as a way to "make it harder for criminals and the mentally ill to get guns." She will say, "9 out of 10 Americans support background checks."

On December 4, Breitbart News reported a CNN poll that showed "50 percent of Americans oppose more gun control," and only "49 percent" support it.

Factions

Factions are rather interesting, though often ignored by most, in the world we live in.  Factions are "somebody else", and we, individually, have no part in them, except those that we are a part of -- though we don't really see them as factions, only truth.  We know what we believe; we know our moral values; we know what right and wrong are; we know what we want to know; everybody else is, if they don't agree with us, simply wrong.

So, let's begin by understanding what a faction is.

Webster's 1828 Dictionary:

A party, in political society, combined or acting in union, in opposition to the prince, government or state; usually applied to a minority, but it may be applied to a majority. sometimes a state is divided into factions nearly equal. 

... whether amounting to a majority or minority of the whole, who are united and actuated by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.

Or, the more simplistic:

A group of persons forming a cohesive, usually contentious minority within a larger group.

Factions are, however, a way of life.  We are all in factions and in many different areas. 

For the most part, people perceive, with very few exceptions, that there are two political factions in this country; Democrats/Liberals, and, Republicans/Conservatives.  What the political philosophies of the two "factions" are is inconsequential, at least at this point, to the discussion.  The point to be made here is that we have perceived that there are only two factions, and anything else is hardly worthy of our consideration.

With regard to other aspects of our lives and our society, there are minor factions that we see, all of the time.  For example, the queer community is recognized as a faction, though most fail to recognize that there is a large faction, which is opposed to the smaller, recognized, faction.  That larger faction is those of us who, whether Christian, or not, understand the necessity for moral values and standards within a country.

However, legislation, political correctness, and/or influence through the press tend to either render illegal, or, at least minimally subject those who are a part of that larger faction, to ridicule for expressing themselves, in dispute with the faction's principles.

The net effect is to render that larger faction as inconsequential, or illegitimate, providing a strong platform for the assertion of the values of the lesser faction, even to the point of additional legislation on their behalf.

Lawsuit: Woman served 154 days for a 48-hour sentence

Charges against a Jeffersonville woman who spent five months in jail for a 48-hour sentence are expected to dropped while she moves ahead with filing a civil lawsuit against Clark County for her lengthy incarceration.

Destiny Hoffman, 34, was released from the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex on Thursday, a day after Clark County Deputy Prosecutor Michaelia Gilbert discovered her status as an inmate while reviewing old case files.

Hoffman was a participant in the Clark County Drug Court Treatment Program, and her 154-day incarceration resulted from Clark County Circuit Court No. 2 Judge Jerry Jacobi, who oversees the drug court, issuing a two-day sanction and never notifying jail staff to release her from the facility.

Branch was descended from distinguished North Carolinians: her father was General William Augustus Blount (1792-1867) of Beaufort County; her mother was Nancy Haywood, granddaughter of Col. Philemon Hawkins of Warren County.  Mrs. Branch organized Raleigh’s Ladies Memorial Association immediately after the war.

Passing of Mrs. Lawrence O’B. Branch

“Mrs. L. O’B. Branch, widow of the famous North Carolina brigadier-general who gave his life for the Confederacy at Sharpsburg, passed peacefully away at her home in Raleigh on November 9, 1903. Mrs. Branch had been in declining health for several months and had almost reached the advanced age of eighty-six years. 

She was the daughter of General. W.A. Blount, one of North Carolina’s distinguished men, and her mother was the daughter of Sherwood Haywood, Esq., of Raleigh.  In 1844 she was married to Gen. Lawrence O’B. Branch, who represented his district in Congress for several terms, and during that time his family lived in Washington City. [Gen. Branch finished his literary education at Princeton, came to Tennessee and studied law with the eminent jurist judge, John Marshall, of Franklin. He resided during the time with the family of his uncle, Dr. Lawrence D. G. O’Bryan.]

At the outbreak of war he went to the front and was made brigadier-general.  He lost his life while leading is brigade in the battle of Sharpsburg, September 17, 1862; and his body was borne from the field by his faithful Negro servant, Wiley.  After forty-one years of patient watching and waiting, his devoted wife is again with him. 

Mrs. Branch was a remarkable woman. She was deeply interested in contributing to the needs of Confederate veterans and perpetuating the memory of those who gave their lives for the cause.  It was Mrs. Branch who organized the Ladies Memorial Association at Raleigh and became its first president.  For many years she remained the head of that organization, and accomplished untold good. 

The veterans in the Soldiers’ Home were frequently cheered by her presence, and loved her dearly. The Confederate Camp in this city is named for her distinguished husband, and upon the last memorial day, when she was unable to attend the exercises, a body of veterans visited her. 

Mrs. Branch had four children: Hon. William B. Branch, ex-Congressman, of Washington, N.C.; Mrs. Robert H. Jones of Raleigh; Mrs. Armistead Jones, of Raleigh; and Mrs. Kerr Craige, of Salisbury.

The funeral was attended by a large gathering of veterans, relatives and other friends, and many affecting incidents showed the esteem in which the good woman was held.  Drawn up in lines extending from the gateway . . . were veterans from [the] L.O’B. Branch Camp and Soldiers’ Home.  Their heads were bared, not a few with armless sleeves and wooden limbs, bearing eloquent testimony to their valor on bloody battlefields.  

The interment was in the city cemetery beside the grave of General Branch.  Among the floral pieces were handsome designs from the L.O’B. Branch Camp of Veterans, the Ladies Memorial  Association, and the Harry Burgwyn Camp.  The draped colors of the Camp were sent to the residence to be placed above the honored remains until after the funeral. The flag at the Soldiers’ Home has been half-masted since Mrs. Branch’s death.

Sen. Coburn: I Lost My Preferred Cancer Specialist Under Obamacare

 

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) recently announced that he’s going to resign his U.S. Senate seat before his term expires. But it’s not clear to what extent this decision was influenced by the fact he’s suffered a relapse of prostrate cancer. He said in a video making the announcement public that, “I am now convinced that I can best serve my own children and grandchildren by shifting my focus elsewhere.”

So he will soon retire.

On Tuesday, however, he appeared on MSNBC’s morning flagship program and informed viewers that while he’s “doing well,” he’s lost his cancer specialist because of Obamacare, and thus will have to pay higher medical costs out-of-pocket as a result (via Politico).

Decades-Old Weapons Cache Discovered at School Construction Site

Construction workers preparing to build a new classroom at a school in northern Israel discovered a large underground weapons cache on Monday that included 50 decades-old guns and grenades described as having survived  in pristine condition.

The weapons found on Kibbutz Mesilot were among those hidden by fighters of the Haganah, the Jewish community’s defense force when the area was under British rule before the 1948 War of Independence.

Beit She’an Police Chief Superintendent Amos Shimoni told Ynet that the weapons were preserved so well in a large box that some appeared to be in practically new condition.

Common Core advocates beg Obama not to mention them in State of the Union address

Getting a plug in the annual State of the Union address is a big deal for lobbyists and activists in Washington. It is a clear public sign that the White House is backing their agenda. But one group would rather President Obama not mention them: advocates of the education reform called Common Core.

Common Core is attempt to create a standard national curriculum for kindergarten through high school. It's an idea whose supporters and detractors cut across party and ideological lines. One of the supporters is Obama, who touted it in his two previous addresses. That appears to have done it more harm than good, though.

Cool gear, brah. Glad Starbucks is safe.

The guys at Gear Whores Anonymous dropped the high-resolution image on their Facebook page showing a pair of Maryland State Troopers who got tasked with guarding Starbucks in the wake of Saturday’s mall shooting. They claim the two cops as their own (gear whores), and the photo makes a pretty decent case for the claim.

Let Women Carry Concealed Firearms on Campus

Women should be allowed to carry concealed firearms on college campuses. Instead, President Obama favors Gun Free Zones, which endanger women’s health.

One in five female college students are sexually assaulted or raped according to a new report issued last week by the White House Council on Women and Girls. Declaring that sexual assault “affects every one of us,” Obama picked up his pen and signed a piece of paper (a “memorandum”) calling for the creation of a campus rape response task force.

Sure, this token effort could help Obama’s party appeal to female voters during a midterm election year. Or, Obama’s memorandum could give 2016 Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton (shhhhh, nobody knows!) something to strut about as she tours the country promoting her “No Ceilings” project to bring abuses against women “out of the shadows.”

But what real good will a memorandum or initiative do if it doesn’t include arming women? Young women are sexually assaulted on college campuses in part because college campuses are “Gun Free Zones.”

The Restless Heart of Darkness – Part One

I had an insight recently, one of those Archimedes-sloshes-the-bath moments where a great mass of otherwise disorganized observations and rules-of-thumb suddenly fell into a pattern as neat as a periodic table. It is no doubt something many thinkers have seen and discussed erenow, but this was the first time I saw it, and to me it was a new as a young man’s first infatuation, as new as spring.

The insight occurred during a three discussions with fellow writers for whom I have enormous respect, but whose ideas I condemn as misleading, deceptive, even poisonous. (If you wonder one can respect a man whose ideas you loathe, imagine being a mother whose child grows up to be a drug addict, or a sexual pervert, or demon-possessed. The greater her love for the child, the deeper her hatred of the addiction, perversion, or possession enslaving him.)

At the risk of giving away the surprise ending (which, honestly, I suppose is not a surprise to anyone but me) I realized why it is that the current mainstream modern thought, despite its illogical and pointless nature, is so persistent, nay, so desperate.

I realized why they never admit they are wrong no matter how obvious the error, nor can they compromise, nor hold a rational discussion, nor a polite one, nor can they restrain themselves. They can neither win nor surrender.

I realized why their hearts were so restless.  It is obvious once one sees it.

No doubt I should explain first why this was such a puzzle to me.

 There is a certain darkness slowly absorbing ever more of the intellectual life in the West which seeks, for various reasons, to remove the common morality of mankind from our souls, to deaden normal and natural emotions and passions, to break up the family, to abolish honest and human sentiments, patriotism and gratitude among them, to abolish a belief in objective truth, to abolish love of beauty, to abolish all passion for virtue, to kill God, and, in sum, to abolish everything that makes us truly human.
