After Years of Common Core, Betsy DeVos Announces 'Devastating' Results

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos listens during an Interagency Working Group on Youth Programs meeting at the State Dining Room of the White House March 18, 2019, in Washington, D.C.

Years after Common Core made its debut in many state education systems, the disastrous long-term results of the program are finally being seen.

The revelation came as part of the Department of Education’s 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress report.

“Every American family needs to open The Nation’s Report Card this year and think about what it means for their child and for our country’s future,” Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said in a media release. “The results are, frankly, devastating.”

NBC legend Tom Brokaw told an obviously disappointed Andrea Mitchell that Democrats do not have “the goods” to impeach President Trump.

Brokaw is on the road touting his new book, The Fall of Richard Nixon, which I can’t wait to read, and knows of what he speaks. At age 33, NBC handed him the White House correspondent’s job in the summer of 1973, one year after the Watergate break-in, eight months after Nixon’s resounding re-election victory, and a year before the president would be forced to resign in disgrace

On Thursday, the House Democrats made their impeachment inquiry into President Trump official, pushing through their resolution by a largely party line vote of 232 to 194. Though Democrats have been pushing to impeach Trump since even before his inauguration, the trigger that finally resulted in an official inquiry was a complaint by an unidentified whistleblower who heard second-hand about Trump’s much-analyzed July 25 call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asking him to “look into” the allegations of corruption involving former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

That, and the illegal removal of President Trump would be seminal signals to take this conflict  to another and more actionable level."

"There is an old song which asserts that 'the best things in life are free.' Not true! Utterly false! This was the tragic fallacy which brought on the decadence and collapse of the democracies of the twentieth century; those noble experiments failed because the people had been led to believe that they could simply vote for whatever they wanted... and get it, without toil, without sweat, without tears
"Nothing of value is free. Even the breath of life is purchased at birth only through gasping effort and pain." [Robert A. Heinlein, Starship Troopers]
The above quote, one of the most significant statements of Heinlein’s personal convictions from one of his most influential novels, contains both a great truth and a misleading implication. That’s not a criticism of the conviction, mind you; the old boy sometimes stumbled on his way to his destination, as do we all...but he almost always arrived where he intended, whereas many of us do not.

Inside the Wire

Antifa – the street army of the ‘democratic’ establishment will become the kernel, the hard core cadre of the Communist insurgency in America.  They are presently arming and training for the role.   They have money, motivation and method.  As they feel and find their way, they will become the means.

History is replete with examples.  Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, and now here, in North America, the sons of the sixties have matured and produced a new generation of Red Brigade, Red Army Faction, ‘Shining Path’; a new and more virulent ‘Weathermen’.

They will become the American Viet Cong.

For now, they’re mainly younger people of limited capability, but thoroughly imbued with their ‘religion’.  Years of indoctrination from public elementary school through elite university, have borne fruit.  These will not be the frontline grunts, but the Agitprop agents who recruit, conscript, and command the ‘bulletcatchers’ who do the fighting.

They are inside the wire, now.

Communists never actually believe their bullshit.  They know that it is just a means to achieve power and control.  They feel entitled by their superiority, intellectual, moral, or ‘right’ to rule.  For sixty years, they’ve been told they’re the ‘best and brightest’.  Their parents allowed them license and made them available to the communist missionaries in the education industry.  They breed among themselves and produce new crops.

They are inside the wire, now.

Antonio Gramsci, Bill Clinton’s mentor, taught that the route to success led through the institutions.  Accordingly, the virus spread through academia . . . and through the Roman Catholic Church.  Any countervailing ideology was suborned at the start.

Communism uses the tools it needs to win its objectives.  Homosexuals corrupted the Church,  Feminists destroyed the natural comity between the sexes, Race became a weapon, and class is becoming more useful among the susceptible.

2020 may be the year, or it may come later, but come it will, and here it will be.

They are inside the wire, now.

Consider the Communists and their fellow travelers control the West Coast, the North East, much of the Middle West, and all the major cities already.  Consider they or their useful idiots control the media, major corporations, the education establishment and most ‘Christian’ organizations in the country today.

They are inside the wire, now.

Political Correctness is but one of their means and methods.  Destroying the history and heritage of the South is another.  Fear and uncertainty is their stock in trade.  Erasing the normal standards – creating five year old ‘Trannies’ – is their stock in trade.

When nothing is sacred, when you believe in nothing, everything is false and nothing sure, then they will rise with their promises of Utopian dreams.  Convert you or Kill you.

Historically, the number of active agents of totalitarian systems is small.  It was so in the French Revolution, among the Italian Fascists, and the German ‘National Socialists’.  No more than two million Communists controlled the entire Soviet Empire.

They are inside the wire, now.

Remarkable B&W Photos: The Many Faces of 1950s Vietnam

In this collection of black-and-white snapshots, a famed French photographer finds beauty in tumultuous 1950s Vietnam.

Black-and-white photography is often considered more challenging than its color counterpart, as photographers must rely on contrast and light to come up with interesting and captivating shots.

French photographer Raymond Cauchetier, however, makes shooting sans color look like a cakewalk.
Cauchetier is perhaps best known for his work as a set photographer on Jean-Luc Godard’s 1960 debut film, À Bout de Souffle (Breathless). However not many know that before participating in Godard’s breakthrough film, Cauchetier began his career as a hobbyist while serving in the press corps of the French Air Force in Indochina.

His platoon had neither the budget for a camera nor a cameraman back then, so he bought his own Rolleiflex and started snapping away. When his service ended, Cauchetier remained in Indochina and what was supposedly a short vacation resulted in a host of intimate portraits of local residents and their daily life.

Have a look at Cauchetier’s stunning street portraiture below, courtesy of Flickr user manhhai:

The White Privilege Of Black Confederate Denial

Via C.W. Roden

For the first time in my life, I think I finally understand what the term "white privilege" truly means.

Of course, to clarify, it doesn't mean what modern-day Regressive Leftists believes it to mean. Much like the mental gymnastics that go into their arguments for why people who are ethnic minorities cannot be racist, their definitions of what they define as "white privilege" practically needs a GPS device to navigate the twists and turns of logic needed to justify the term.

No folks, the white privilege in question that I want to address today comes from the Don Quixote of History himself, Kevin Levin, author of the historical parody blog Civil War Memory Amnesia.

California, the Chinese, and Nullification

J.P. Morgan, tycoon banker and a close friend to President Stephen Grover Cleveland, observed that “a man always has two reasons for the things he does a good one and the real one.[1] In the case for reconstruction the Republicans who ruled the senate majority knew they needed to do something to prevent the reseating or readmitting of Southern senators as well as keeping the votes of the south and west from going Democrat. The tool they used were amendments and acts cloaked under the name of “civil rights.” The Republican congress in their successful political coup took from the electorates their votes and handed it over to those who lacked knowledge or understanding of the American system. However, as long as the votes went to the Republicans in order to pass their railroad acts, tariff acts, and currency acts, it did not matter the relations between any group of people. Therefore establishing the true motive for the republican congress as only being the ability to hold a new found monopoly over the recreation of American Government. Moving it from the founders republic to a national republic in attempts to usurp all powers and consolidate the states under one government.

An Example of a Brave, Skillful, Hard-Fighting Soldier and Gentleman

Image result for England, museum re lee bust

I searched but could find nothing, so I guess it has been hidden from view as well as from type. :(

The following account of the presentation of the bust of Gen. R. E. Lee to the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, England, was contributed [to the Confederate Veteran] by Mrs. L.R. Schuyler, who represented the United Daughters of the Confederacy on the occasion . . .
www.Circa1865.org   The Great American Political Divide

An Example of a Brave, Skillful, Hard-Fighting Soldier and Gentleman

Mrs. Schuyler writes:

“We were met at the station by Lieutenant-Colonel Lickman, acting as an escort from the College. At Sandhurst, we were received by Major-General Corkran, Commandant, and Mrs. Corkran; Col. J.E. Turner, Assistant Commandant, and Mrs. Turner; and the other officers and their wives . . .

It is often easier to describe than to convey to the mind of another the sensations one experiences on an occasion of this kind, but I am sure that those who were present will never forget the thrill which each must have felt when I drew aside the Confederate flag which veiled the bust of General Lee (this flag the gift of Miss Jessica Randolph Smith, of North Carolina, daughter of the designer).

Instantly the officers drew to attention, saluted, and stood at attention, as did the entire audience, during the presentation of the bust. So intense was the stillness that suddenly I seemed to have been left alone with the “spirit of Lee,” and, when the applause broke forth, it was a rude awakening which brought me back from a communion with that great soul.

General Corkran said that on behalf of the college he gratefully accepted that memorial of Gen. Robert E. Lee, and he did so for the same reasons which he believed had prompted its donors to offer it. It was to preserve the name and keep before them the example of a brave, skillful, hard-fighting soldier and gentleman.

General Corkran was deeply interested to learn that the colors of our organization were the same as those of Sandhurst . . . As at the presentation of the bust of General Lee to Saint Cyr Military School, in France (which was a gift of our Chapter), it was my privilege to toast to our respective rulers and the College.

Mr. Sterling, Councillor of the American Embassy, representing Ambassador Kellogg (whose absence in Scotland prevented his attendance), made a short address after which, escorted by General Corkran, I placed red, white and blue flowers on the altar of the memorial chapel in the name of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.”

The following inscription appears on the base:

Robert Edward Lee 1807-1870

General Commanding the Armies of the Confederate States of America 1861-1865

Presented by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, 1914

(UDC Gift to England, Confederate Veteran, November 1924, excerpts pg. 412)

The monuments to Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson continue to be targets

Via Susan Lee

Image may contain: one or more people and outdoor

The damage inflicted on these nearly century-old landmarks is appalling. Since September 13, 2019 (the last day of the trial) the monuments have been damaged on three occasions.

As earlier reported, the Monument Fund’s request to install cameras in both parks was rejected by the City without explanation. The Charlottesville Police Department is supposedly investigating the damage, but have provided no status updates.

Both parks are poorly lit and we have made the Parks and Recreation Department aware that several of the lamps near the Jackson Monument are not functioning. Local activists operate under the cover of darkness, and now apparently with impunity.

It is abundantly clear that the City of Charlottesville has no interest in protecting or maintaining these monuments. Would the City be so callous and neglectful if any other Historical Landmark were so targeted? Doubtful - there would probably be lights, cameras, and increased Police patrol.

City Council has given its attorneys permission to appeal Judge Moore’s September 13 decision that both monuments are afforded protection under Virginia Statute §15.2-1812.

They are banking on a successful appeal and the possibility that the now Republican-controlled Virginia General Assembly will be Democrat-controlled after the November 5, 2019 election.
Democrats have tried to change the language of VA Statute §15.2-1812 twice in recent years; if they gain the majority, a third attempt may be successful, putting all Virginia monuments (not just Confederate) in danger of removal. If you live in Virginia, make sure you know your candidate’s (regardless of political affiliation) position on all issues important to you and VOTE on Tuesday, November 5!

While the battle seems all uphill, we are not giving up. We will continue to press for action and have a dedicated group of volunteers who are monitoring the parks. If you are local and would like to join us, please message this page. Felonies are being committed and we aim to witness, record, and report them to the authorities. If you are monitoring the parks on your own, do not engage - please only document and report. If you see the monuments being damaged, a felony is being committed and you can call 911 to report.

To that end, a reward is available through Crimestoppers to anyone providing a tip that leads to the arrest of those involved: 434-977-4000.

To all of you who continue to support our efforts, Thank You. As we are facing an appeal and are awaiting receipt of an estimate to repair the damage inflicted on the monuments, any donations received will be put to immediate good use: https://www.themonumentfund.org/donate/ or checks made payable to The Monument Fund, P.O. Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, the overwhelming majority of likely voters say they believe in the doctrine of “America First” when it comes to national public policy, a new poll reveals.

A poll by Selzer and Company/Grinnell College finds that the vast majority of American adults say they are America First voters, while less than 20 percent identify as socialists.

Overall, about seven-in-ten — or 70 percent — of likely voters say they are believers in America First — the nationalist-populist doctrine that guides President Trump’s agenda on immigration, trade, healthcare, and foreign policy, among others.

For years the civil libertarians have been warning us that the intelligence community posed a threat to democracy, as we know it in these United States. Every so often they would point to some excess of the FBI or the CIA and tell us that the lights were going out in democratic America. History will not be kind to Nancy Pelosi

One way or another, Nancy Pelosi will go down in history. Let’s hope she doesn’t take America with her.

The speaker’s decision to go all in on impeachment is fraught with danger and could have fateful consequences far beyond Donald Trump’s presidency. With only about a year to go until the 2020 election, Pelosi has thrown her full weight behind the effort to undo the results of 2016.

This is a historic mistake, one that could tear America apart. Based on the evidence the House has made public, impeaching Trump is a meritless, reckless assault on democracy.

Al-Baghdadi’s DIRTY UNDERWEAR, Stolen By A Kurdish Spy, Gave Him Away

This July 5, 2014 photo shows an image grab taken from a propaganda video released by al-Furqan Media allegedly showing the leader of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, aka Caliph Ibrahim, adressing Muslim worshippers at a mosque in the militant-held northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Baghdadi, who on June 29 proclaimed a "caliphate" straddling Syria and Iraq, purportedly ordered all Muslims to obey him in the video released on social media. - In early 2014 the self-styled Islamic State entered the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, declaring it their capital and beginning a reign of terror marked by grisly public executions. Armed sharia police patrolled the streets as "enemies" of the regime were crucified or decapitated, their severed heads impaled on spikes in the city square. The Central Intelligence Agency was able to positively pinpoint Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s location, a Syrian Democratic Forces official claimed Monday, thanks to an enterprising Kurdish spy who stole the terror leader’s soiled underwear.

Fox News reports that, in a debriefing held just days after the United States’ most wanted terrorist blew himself up in a daring raid by U.S. Special Forces, Kurdish forces revealed that they were instrumental in tracking and keeping tabs on al-Baghdadi, even though the terror leader moved frequently and was due to depart his Idlib, Syria, safehouse any day.

SEAL Who Shot Bin Laden Eviscerates Baghdadi and Schiff: 'You Might Be a Leaker' & Trump Announces American Troops Have Killed Another Major ISIS Figure

Inconvenient History: My Response to Kevin Levin’s Attack on My Article on Black Confederates

Via Jonathan

Earl L Ijames, Curator NC Museum of History speaks on NC blacks: slaves, free, slave owners, and Confederate soldiers, facts they don't teach you in school.

Back on September 21, Reckonin.com ran my article, “The Debate over Black Confederates.” In that essay I cited a news report which originally appeared in The [Raleigh] News & Observer on September 12. That article detailed the efforts of one Kevin Levin, an author based in Boston, Massachusetts, to counter the longstanding work of Earl Ijames. Earl, who is black, is a Curator at the North Carolina Museum of History and was formerly an Archivist at the North Carolina State Archives; and he has done voluminous research on the existence and activities of black Confederates.

Over the years Earl has engaged in almost non-stop debate with those writers and others who wish to deny that “black Confederates” ever existed. And in my essay at Reckonin.com I suggested that the real reason for this zealous denial had far more to do with ideology and a new dogmatic template which has no room for deviation, than with historical investigation. I even made the comparison with the old Soviet Union under Stalin where “deviationism” from the party line was met with forced recantation, possibly an all-expenses-paid trip to a “re-education center” in Siberia. The reality of “black Confederates” in Southern armies, except under duress, is therefore dismissed, cannot be true, because it violates the current progressivist party line about race and racism. If the history doesn’t fit, simply dismiss the history.

Levin read my little essay, and apparently it infuriated him quite a bit. For he then proceeded to get on Twitter (which I don’t have and don’t care to have) and denounce me, although his real target continues to be Earl Ijames and the existence of black Confederates. In particular, he takes aim at the Confederate service of Weary Clyburn, asserting that Clyburn was never actually or technically a member of a Confederate unit.

Here is an access link to the Twitter comments by Levin:
https://twitter.com/KevinLevin/status/1175716718876024832?s=20

I will not attempt to get into a shouting match with Kevin Levin—Earl’s research and the work of others on this topic stands on its own merit. I have, however, briefly touched on the subject in my book, The Land We Love: The South and Its Heritage:

Late in the conflict (March 13, 1865) the Confederate government authorized the formation of black military units to fight for the Confederacy, with manumission to accompany such service. According to several research studies (see Ervin Jordan, Jr. Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia. University of Virginia Press, 1995; Charles Kelly Barrow, J. H. Segars, and R. B. Rosenburg, Black Confederates, Pelican Publishing, 2001), thousands of black men fought for the Confederacy, perhaps as many as 30,000. Despite the earlier declarations of some Deep South states, would a society ideologically committed to preserving in toto the peculiar institution as the reason for war, even in such dire straits, have enacted such a measure? Did the thousands of black men who fought for the Confederacy believe they were fighting for slavery? [The Land We Love, p. 14]

Additionally, let me quote Dr. Louis Henry Gates, Jr., the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and the director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African-American Research at Harvard University and no defender of the Confederacy, that at the onset of the War Between the States,

…a group of free people of color in New Orleans, offer[ed] their services to the Confederacy….: "The free colored population [native] of Louisiana … own slaves, and they are dearly attached to their native land … and they are ready to shed their blood for her defense. They have no sympathy for abolitionism; no love for the North, but they have plenty for Louisiana … They will fight for her in 1861 as they fought [to defend New Orleans from the British] in 1814-1815."

…As Noah Andre Trudeau and James G. Hollandsworth Jr. explain, once the war broke out, some of these same black men formed 14 companies of a militia composed of 440 men and were organized by the governor in May 1861 into ‘the Native Guards, Louisiana,’ swearing to fight to defend the Confederacy. Although given no combat role, the Guards — reaching a peak of 1,000 volunteers — became the first Civil War unit to appoint black officers.

Although the 1st Louisiana Native (Colored) Guards, CSA, were later disbanded (and a very small proportion later joined Federal forces), the unit was the first of any in North America to have African-American officers, pre- dating the United States Colored Troops.

The Louisiana Native Guards were not unique, for there were other “colored” units that existed in the Southern Confederacy, as Professor Clyde Wilson has detailed  (2016) in a long review essay of Professor Ervin Jordan’s study, Black Confederates and Afro-Yankees in Civil War Virginia, and Larry Koger’s Black Slaveowners: Free Black Slavemasters in South Carolina, 1790-1860 (Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 1994). And who can forget Kent Masterson Brown’s description (in his much-praised study, Retreat from Gettysburg, published by the University of North Carolina Press, 2005) of how the Confederate lines at Gettysburg were manned by black Confederates as the survivors of the Pickett/Pettigrew charge fell back on that fateful July 3, 1863. “The English observer Col. Fremantle,” as Professor Wilson cites the Englishman’s memoir Three Months in the Southern States, “saw a black Confederate soldier marching a Yankee prisoner to the rear. He wondered at their reaction if the abolitionists in London could see that.”

Of course, a large majority of blacks fighting for or assisting in other ways the Confederate war effort were not formally inducted into the army. But it is beyond debate that many did so informally and voluntarily, and there are indeed pension records (for example, in the North Carolina State Archives, under the 1901 pension law as amended twenty-eight years later) for “colored Confederates” who did receive an allowance. And, like Earl Ijames, as a former (retired) Archivist and State Registrar at the State Archives I have viewed those records. More, many of those pensioners are listed in the comprehensive and meticulously researched North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster. (Raleigh: Division of Archives and History, 1966-2009. 20 volumes).

As Dr. Wilson communicated to me in his observation about Clyburn, Levin’s comments are, “Just verbiage. The point is, he [Clyburn] served with the army willingly, as did many others.  Thousands went with the army to Gettysburg and back.” And by the soldiers with whom he fought, he was considered one of them.

Again, I would suggest that the real issue here is not so much the existence (or non-existence) of black Confederates, but rather a classic Marxist ideological template in which such persons do not fit. They do not further the narrative, so they become non-persons, non-existent, inconvenient history.

And you’d better not say otherwise, lest you bring down all the wrath of writers like Kevin Levin or instructors at the University of North Carolina such as W. Fitzhugh Brundage, a William Umstead Distinguished Professor of History at that university (cited in the News & Observer story as supporting Levin) who threaten, in a not-so-veiled manner, your job.

Ironically, perhaps to be attacked by someone like Kevin Levin may also have its positives. At least it demonstrates that he is cognizant of opposing views, and that he felt strongly enough about my essay to attempt a reply. That is, it bothered and provoked him enough that he believed he should respond.

And any time I can get under the skin of such folks, hit a nerve so to speak, I count it a success.

What Jefferson Davis Would Tell Us Today (And Why It Matters)

In our turbulent times it is increasingly evident that our government is disconnected to the citizens of the republic. Rather, what we behold is a zealous managerial class, an elite buried deep in an aggressive bureaucracy which is, essentially, a “government within a government.” It is an unelected, self-perpetuating oligarchy that offers the illusion of popular participation, and the chimerical mirage of two political parties which tussle back and forth, each claiming to represent the wishes and views of the citizenry. Voting takes place, of course; and then one party or the other claims victory to implement its agenda. Yet, in Washington D.C. (and in many state capitals) the administrators who actually run government and its agencies—those dour faces—remain the same, and very little changes at all.

Brexit Delay Signals The Death Of British Democracy

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 28: Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his political advisor Dominic Cummings leave 10 Downing Street on October 28, 2019 in London, England. EU leaders have announced that an agreement to extend Brexit until 31 January 2020 has been agreed in principle.

Despite repeatedly stating that the United Kingdom would fulfill the democratic decision of the British people and leave the European Union on October 31st, Prime Minister Boris Johnson seems to have become the latest victim of the combined weight of internal British political sabotage and a monolithic European bureaucracy.

When Parliament passed the EU Withdrawal (No. 2) Act, known as the “Benn Act,” Boris Johnson’s government was forced to work to stop a “no-deal Brexit” on October 31st. Earlier today, as the latest departure date loomed, European leaders agreed to yet another extension — this time to January 31st, 2020.

Judge allows Nick Sandmann to sue Washington Post, reverses prior ruling

Pro-life teen Nick Sandmann’s defamation suit against the Washington Post got a new lease on life Monday thanks to US District Judge William Bertelsman partially reversing his prior ruling, which will allow the suit to move forward.

Immediately following the January March for Life in Washington, D.C., the press erupted with claims that a video showed boys from the Kentucky religious school harassing Nathan Phillips, a Native American activist, outside the Lincoln Memorial. But additional extended video and firsthand accounts soon revealed that Phillips was the one who waded into the group waiting for its bus and decided to beat a drum inches from Sandmann’s face, while the boys had merely performed school cheers in hopes of drowning out racist taunts from members of the Black Hebrew Israelites fringe group.

Turkey, the Kurds, and Kurdistan

 Majority Kurdish provinces in Turkey

Turkey sits between Europe and the Middle East. About three percent of it on the western side of the narrow passage through the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles is in Europe, and the rest, situated on the Anatolian Peninsula, is the western most extension of Asia. It is 99.8 percent Muslim. Aside from the United States, Turkey is the most populous nation in the NATO alliance with 82 million people. It has a free market economy, which is the 13th largest in the world. With 355,000 active military and 170,000 ready reserves, it has the largest armed forces in NATO except for the U.S. The Turkish Army has 2,500 tanks and over 9,000 other armored fighting vehicles.

The Turkish Army has long held the reputation of one of the toughest fighting forces in the world. The Turkish Air Force has 635 aircraft of which 240 are modern F-16 Falcons, and 49 are F-4E Phantom II attack bombers. It has 90 nuclear bombs located at the USAF air base at Incirlik.  The U.S. canceled Turkey’s order for 30 advanced F-35 Lightning aircraft, when the Turkish government purchased advanced S-400 Surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems from the Russians. The Turkish Navy is the 4th largest in NATO with a variety of surface ships, 12 submarines, 52 aircraft, and Marines and Special Forces personnel.

Impeachment Witness Bill Taylor Led Ukraine Delegation for Group Advised by Hunter Biden

U.S.Ambassador to Iraq Bill Taylor speaks about reconstruction in Iraq at a press conference in Baghdad's heavily guarded 'Green Zone' in Iraq Saturday, May 21, 2005. Taylor said insurgents targeting oil lines, electricity plants and other projects vital to Iraq's reconstruction had delayed U.S.-led rebuilding efforts since the 2003 invasion …
Taylor’s testimony was characterized by CNN as “explosive” and was similarly hyped by other news media outlets despite it not being unusual for the U.S. to condition aspects of relations on participation in ongoing American investigations involving the foreign country in question.
Still, Taylor conceded that there was no quid pro quo.
“Ambassador Sondland said that he had talked to President Zelensky and Mr. Yermak and told them that, although this was not a quid pro quo, if President Zelensky did not ‘clear things up’ in public, we could be at a ‘stalemate.’ I understood ‘stalemate to mean that Ukraine would not receive the much-needed military assistance,” Taylor testified.
