The Money Changer on Jefferson Davis

On 6 December 1885 President Jefferson Davis died in New Orleans.

Born just across the Tennessee line in Kentucky in 1808, he graduated from West Point in 1828, & later fought in the Black Hawk War (1832). There he served under Col. Zachary Taylor (later US president) and married his daughter, Sarah Knox Taylor. Married in 1835, bride & groom both contracted malaria, and Sarah died three months after they were wed.

After 8 years as a recluse, Davis was elected to the US House in 1845, shortly after marrying Varina Howell. He resigned from the house in 1846 to lead a volunteer regiment in the Mexican- American War. Because of his heroic war service, the Mississippi governor appointed him US Senator for an unexpired term. In the senate he chaired the Committee on Military Affairs, and in 1853 President Pierce made him Secretary of War. Ironically, he updated the very US Army which would later face the Confederacy with the latest technology.

Not a secessionist himself, he left the Senate when Mississippi seceded, and was elected president of the new Confederacy in February, 1861. Critics abound who in hindsight can show what terrible mistakes Davis made. R. E. Lee didn't think so, and it is doubtful that anyone could have done a better job leading the South.

At the War's end Davis was captured near Washington, Georgia. When he was transferred to a military transport at the coast, the little black boy, Jim Limber, whom his wife had rescued from a beating on Richmond's streets and whom the Davises had adopted, was torn from Mrs. Davis' arms and never seen again.

Jefferson Davis was imprisoned for two years under monstrously cruel conditions at Fortress Monroe. Pope Pius IX sent him a crown of thorns. The whole time he was threatened with prosecution for his part in the war, but eventually the US government realized they could never get away with a trial because secession was not illegal. He was released on a $100,000 bond, posted by in part by prominent Northerners such as Horace Greeley, Cornelius Vanderbilt, & Gerrit Smith.

No point in my praising Jefferson Davis' astonishing nobility, courage, & purity of heart. Y'all will say I am biased. However if you want to learn for yourself what Davis was like, read Mrs. Felicity Allen's Jefferson Davis, Unconquered Heart. She spent 20 years researching & preparing her book, and it's the best Davis biography available.

Troops to Keep the Loyal States in Harness

In mid-1864 Grant was concerned about the specter of massive Northern draft resistance and sending some troops northward despite outnumbering Gen. Robert E. Lee at least four to one. Lincoln’s refusal to negotiate a peaceful settlement of the war ensured more unnecessary American battle deaths, as well as the death of prisoners North and South, languishing in prisons. To keep their States in harness, Northern governors were reminded that Grant’s military forces could easily turn northward.

“The slow and bloody progress through Virginia to the James [River], the failure of the first assaults on Lee’s lines around Petersburg, the appearance of [General Jubal] Early before the gates of [Washington, DC], produced a greater sense of disillusionment and of disappointment than had followed Burnside’s [1862] repulse at Fredericksburg or Hooker’s [1863] failure at Chancellorsville. The New York World, which had been exceptionally friendly to the commander in chief, asked on July 11:

“Who shall revive the withered hopes that bloomed on the opening of Grant’s campaign?”

And nine days before Congress had invited the President to appoint a day for national prayer and humiliation. Horace Greeley attempted to open negotiations for peace by meeting Confederate commissioners at Niagara [Falls], and in the middle of July two other semi-official seekers of peace, James F. Jacques and J.R. Gilmore, had gone to Richmond, only to be told by the Southern President:

“If your papers tell the truth, it is your capital that is in danger, not ours….in a military view I should certainly say our position is better than yours.”

Greeley, despite the failure of his journey to Niagara, resumed his efforts to end the war, and on August 9, wrote to the President:

“Nine-tenths of the Whole American people, North and South, are anxious for peace – peace on almost any terms – and utterly sick of human slaughter and devastation. I beg you, implore you, to inaugurate or invite proposals for peace forthwith. And, in case peace cannot now be made, consent to an armistice of one year, each party to retain unmolested all it now holds, but the rebel ports to be opened.”

Not only was there this pressure from outside; there was discord within. [Secretary] Chase had resigned, a presidential election was drawing near, and there were outspoken predictions of a Republican defeat. The North was feeling as it had never felt before the strain of prolonged conflict…the rumblings of opposition to the draft, which had just become law, were growing daily louder [and] surely Lincoln would have been justified in [opening negotiations] in August, 1864. But what happened?

Early in August the grumblings against the draft had alarmed [Gen.] Halleck, and on the eleventh of that month he told Grant:

“Pretty strong evidence is accumulating…to make forcible resistance to the draft in New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, and perhaps some of the other States. The draft must be enforced for otherwise the army cannot be kept up. But to enforce it, it may require the withdrawal of a considerable number of troops from the field…”

Four days later, on the evening of August 15, Grant answered…

“If there is any danger of an uprising in the North to resist the draft…our loyal governors ought to organize the militia at once to resist it. If we are to draw troops from the field to keep the loyal States in harness, it will prove difficult to suppress the rebellion in the disloyal States. My withdrawal from the James River would mean the defeat of Sherman.”

Insane Motor Race - Isle of Man TT

Insane, indeed.
========

The Isle of Man TT was for many years the most prestigious motor-cycle race in the world.
Between 1907 and 2009 there have been 237 deaths during official practices or races on the Snaefell Mountain Course.

Snaefell Mountain Course or Mountain Course is a road-racing circuit used for the Isle of Man TT and Manx Grand Prix Races held in the Isle of Man from 1911 and 1923 respectively. The racing is held on public roads closed for racing by an Act of Tynwald (the parliament of the Isle of Man). It is the oldest motor-cycle racing circuit still in use. The official lap record for the Snaefell Mountain Course is 17 Minutes and 12.30 seconds at an average speed of 131.578 mph (211.754 km/h) set by John McGuinness during the 2009 Senior TT Race.

The Plantation

Via Tom Stedman

Council Member Kwame Kenyatta told the Detroit Free Press, “We as a community and as a people can agree to disagree but at the end of the day we have to decide what our destiny is going to be before someone comes in as a master, as someone to control the plantation. We don’t need someone else’s consent to do the business that the people put us in charge of.”

I enjoyed this rebuttal over at Walter Russell Mead’s blog on The American Interest:

“Plantation”? “Plantation” is a colloquialism for a prosperous place where white people live good and make money from the back-breaking labor of black people.

Detroit is a place where the predominantly black population doesn’t work but receives handouts from white middle and upper-middle class taxpayers in the form of food stamps, welfare, health benefits, etc. Rather than being prosperous, the whole thing is collapsing. “Plantation”? OK, you can start calling me a racist now. Just remember, I wasn’t the one who made this a racial issue."

President Jefferson Davis, Died 6 December 1889

Via Bernhard

“The lamp of life waned low as the hour of midnight arrived; nor did it flicker into the brightness of consciousness at any time. Eagerly, yet tenderly, the watchers gazed at the face of the dying chieftain. His face, always calm and pale, gained additional pallor, and at a quarter to 1 o’clock of the morning of the 6th day of December death came to the venerable leader.

There was nothing remarkable about the death-bed scene. The departure of the spirit was gentle and utterly painless. There were no dry eyes in the little assembly about the bed, and every heart bled with the anguish which found vent in Mrs. Davis’s sobs and cries.”

The Times-Democrat gave the following account of the closing scene: At 12:45 o’clock this morning Hon. Jefferson Davis, ex-President of the Confederate States, passed away at the residence of Associate Justice Charles E. Fenner. Only once did he waver in his belief that his case showed no improvement, and that was at an early hour yesterday morning, when he playfully remarked to Mr. Payne: “I am afraid that I shall be compelled to agree with the doctors for once, and admit that I am a little better.” At 7 o’clock Mrs. Davis administered some medicine, but the ex-President declined to receive the whole dose. She urged upon his the necessity of taking the remainder, but putting it aside, with the gentlest of gestures whispered,

“Pray, excuse me.” These were his last words.”

The Daily States said in its editorial:

“Throughout all the South there are lamentations and tears; in every country on the globe where there are lovers of liberty there is mourning; wherever there are men who admire heroic patriotism, dauntless resolution, fortitude, or intellectual power and supremacy, there is sincere sorrowing. The beloved of our land, the unfaltering upholder of constitutional liberty…is no more…” “Jefferson Davis is dead; but the principles for which he struggled, for the vindication of which he devoted his life, for which he suffered defeat, and unto which he clung unto death, still live. The fanatical howlings of the abolitionists, the tumult and thunders of civil war, the fierce mouthings of the organizers of reconstruction, and reconstruction itself, that black and foul disgrace of humanity, are all departed, sunk into silence like a tavern brawl, but the constitutional principles upon which the Confederacy was founded and for which Jefferson Davis spoke and struggled, for which he gave life and fortune, still survive in all their living power; and when they shall have been, if ever, really destroyed, this Republic will be transformed into one of the most oppressive and offensive oligarchies that has ever arisen amongst the civilized nations of the earth.”

The Times-Democrat of the 10th had this editorial:

“If there was ever the shadow of doubt in the minds of the people of the United States of the hold of Jefferson Davis upon the hearts of the Southern people that doubt has been removed. From city and country, from every nook and hamlet, have come expressions of profoundest sorrow over his death; of grief at the passing away of the great Confederate chieftain. They turned to him as the Mussulman to his Mecca---the shrine at which all true Southern-born should worship. There has never been any division of sentiment as to the greatness of Jefferson Davis. He has always been the hero of his people---their best beloved. From the day that Lee laid down his arms at Appomattox to the hour of Jefferson Davis’s death the Southern people look upon the ex-President of the Confederacy as the embodiment of all that was grand and glorious in the Lost Cause. Standing alone as a citizen without the power to exercise his citizenship, the last surviving victim of sectional hate and malevolence, he was an exile while on the soil of his native land and in the midst of his own people. Jefferson Davis will go to the grave bathed in a people’s tears.”

The world's first spherical flying machine

This is the world's first spherical flying machine developed by the Research Department at Japan's Ministry of Defense.

This machine can hover like a helicopter, and take-off and land vertically. But because it works like a propeller plane standing vertically, it can fly forward at high speed using wings, which a helicopter can't do. This machine also has three gyro sensors, so even if it hits an obstacle, it can maintain its attitude and keep flying through automatic control.

Clerk Turns Tables On Robber

An armed robber stormed Fair Haven’s Babe’s Market last year and cleaned out the cash register. Another showed up Tuesday night—but this time Karar Jawad was armed and ready.

Police said Jawad, who carries a state pistol permit, shot a masked alleged robber. The incident took place at 10:19 p.m. The robber and an alleged accomplice fled; the robber ended up in the hospital. Wednesday night police went to the hospital, put the man under arrest, then had him kept under 24-hour guard, according to Lt. Julie Johnson, head of the police department’s Major Crimes Unit.

In an interview at Babe’s on Ferry Street Wednesday evening, Karar said he fired two shots. (Reader’s note: A video of the incident was removed at the clerk’s request.). The 22-year-old convenience store clerk recently took over ownership of the market from his father.

His father was the one was got robbed last year.

“The time they robbed my dad, that’s the time I knew I had to get myself something to protect myself,” Karar said. So Karar got his .40 Glock and permit in April.

Babe’s Market, a small convenience store, stacks mostly snack foods and canned goods. It has two aisles of goods; a few coolers and refrigerators line the walls.

From behind the counter, Karar recalled his brush with the alleged robber.

Around 10:18 p.m. Tuesday, Jawad was behind the counter with his girlfriend and some friends. Everyone was chatting and having a good time, he said.

Suddenly, two young men—one of them armed—dressed all in black stormed in. They yelled at everyone to get on the ground. One of them pointed a gun to the head of the lone customer in line and demanded his money.

“That’s all the money he had,” Jawad remembered of the customer. “It was like $66.” He said the customer was in line to buy half a gallon of milk.

At that point, Jawad was the only one standing; everyone else was on the floor. The armed man turned to Jawad and pointed the gun at his chest.

“I didn’t think. My head was blank for a second,” he recalled.

An Open Message to Police & Military

Via midnightrider, L&P

This is a message to the Police, to the military, to the TSA, to Homeland Security and to members of every other enforcement arm of the government.

I know that most of you chose the life in uniform because you love your country; because you believed in what that uniform stood for; because you wanted to serve and protect... but I also know that deep down inside you sense that something has gone terribly wrong.

You've watched with the rest of us as elected officials have incrementally legislated our constitutional rights away, you've watched as the state surveillance apparatus has expanded like a cancer through the heart of the nation, and you've watched as the corruption has become more and more blatant. I can understand why you haven't wanted to acknowledge the implications of what you are witnessing. To face the reality of what is happening would mean admitting that you've been betrayed, and it would mean coming to terms with the fact that you... are working... for criminals.

I don't envy your position. I know your job depends on you following orders. I know you have families to support and bills to pay, and I know that if you stand up you could loose everything... but what you need to understand is that continuing to submit to unconstitutional, and immoral orders will not protect you from what is coming.

You may tell yourself that you will take a draw your line in the sand later, that there is a certain point where you will say no, but in reality, you crossed the line a long time ago. You are standing on the wrong side of history right now. You are already participating in the destruction of this country, in the trampling of our rights, of your children's rights, and grandchildren's rights. You are the enforcement arm of a criminal enterprise, you are a servant of a rapidly expanding police state, and you DO have a choice.

I'm not telling you this to condemn you. I'm telling you this because we the people desperately need you to take a stand. We desperately need you to have the courage to face your commanding officers, and tell them no, I didn't sign up for this. No this isn't right. No, I will not obey these unlawful orders.

You took an oath to defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Time to start taking that oath seriously

State Reconsiders Ban on Korean-Owned M-1 Garands

First I've seen it.
========

The State Department announced Dec. 2 that it will re-consider its stance against allowing M-1 Garands into the United States if South Korea offers another sale.

“The Department will consider a new request from the Republic of Korea (ROK) to transfer its inventory of approximately 87,000 M-1 Garand rifles into the United States for sale on the commercial market,” a spokesperson at the U. S. Department of State said to Guns&Patriots on Dec. 2. “We have not yet received that request.”

“These M-1 Garand rifles date back as far as 1926 and remain a legacy of decades of U.S.-South Korean security partnership. The ROK intends to use the net proceeds of the sale, estimated to be between $2 million - $10 million depending on the condition of the rifles, to upgrade its Homeland Defense Mobilization Reserve components with more modern rifles,” said the spokesperson.

Sen. Jon Tester (D.-Mont.) said the new developments encourage him and he hopes the State Department will move forward quickly.

Do you remember why 69 million Americans voted for Barack Obama?

During this Christmas season, Thomas Paine's famous words – "These are the times that try men's souls" – seem especially relevant and poignant.

Thomas Paine

For while everything good, decent and generous about America tends to assert itself at Christmastime, we continue to witness outrage after outrage in Washington, D.C., as a disgraced and repudiated administration continues in its attempts to transform America into something that would horrify Thomas Paine and the other Founding Fathers.

Many people have analyzed, pontificated and written books about how we got to such a low point, but please allow me to remind you of what is undoubtedly the No. 1 reason America is today writhing under the "leadership" of the most destructive and dangerous president in history.

Do you remember why 69 million Americans voted for Barack Obama?

It's because he had an advantage no other presidential candidate has ever had – the total, unabashed support of the "mainstream media," which was so enchanted by the prospect of a young, eloquent, cool, liberal – and for the first time in history, black – president, that they ignored his anti-American, Marxist, Islamic and criminal associations and his unbelievably subversive track record. Instead of vetting him as was their solemn duty, the media lifted him high overhead and giddily raced across the finish line, all the while reassuring Americans Obama would be a great, "historic" and "transformative" president.

As if to assuage their guilt, immediately after Election Day, when it no longer mattered, Washington Post ombudsman Deborah Howell publicly admitted the paper's reporters and editors had utterly neglected to vet either Obama, who "deserved tougher scrutiny," or Biden – an omission she referred to as "one gaping hole in [the Post's] coverage."

Donald Trump now casts even more doubt on Obama

The mainstream media are "protecting" Barack Obama's "unconstitutional" tenure in the White House, refusing to investigate allegations that he fails to meet the Constitution's requirement that a president be a "natural born citizen," according to flamboyant billionaire Donald Trump.

In a conference call today with reporters, WND asked Trump why, if he believes defeating Obama is so significant in 2012, doesn't he use his influence to mount a formal investigation into Obama's eligibility.

There have been allegations since long before Obama's election in 2008 that he is not a "natural-born citizen," a requirement imposed on no other official.

Obama's critics believe that at the time the Constitution was written, the Founders understood "natural-born citizen" to mean the offspring of two citizens.

Obama has claimed he was born in Hawaii, but birth documentation he's released has been judged by a number of document, imaging and graphics experts to be fake.

Others believe he would fail to qualify no matter his place of birth, because his father, Barack Obama Sr., was a Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of Obama Jr.'s birth. They allege the Founders precluded dual citizens by specifically demanding a "natural-born citizen."

Former “Seasteaders” Come Ashore To Start Libertarian Utopias In Honduran Jungle

Via Global Guerrillas

The seasteader-in-chief is headed ashore. Patri Friedman (that’s Milton Friedman's grandson to you), who stepped down as the chief executive of the Peter Thiel-backed Seasteading Institute in August, has resurfaced as the CEO of a new for-profit enterprise named Future Cities Development Inc., which aims to create new cities from scratch (on land this time) governed by "cutting-edge legal systems." The startup may have found its first taker in Honduras, whose government amended its constitution in January to permit the creation of special autonomous zones exempt from local and federal laws. Future Cities has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to build a city in one such zone starting next year.

Seasteading, i.e. the creation of sovereign nations floating offshore, is enshrined in libertarian thought as an end-run around the constraints of stodgy nation-states. The idea has received plenty of (mocking) mainstream coverage, most recently in a Details profile of Thiel, in which Friedman outlined the new startup he had in mind:

One potential model is something Friedman calls Appletopia: A corporation, such as Apple, “starts a country as a business. The more desirable the country, the more valuable the real estate,” Friedman says.
