Excellent: Colonel Baldwin Meets Mr. Lincoln

Through Colonel Baldwin, Virginia provided a viable option to avoid war and preserve the Union. Referencing Lincoln’s course of action, Dabney lamented, “he preferred to destroy the Union and preserve his [redistributive] tariffs. The war was conceived in duplicity, and brought forth in iniquity.”[25]

“I supported President Lincoln. I believed his war policy would be the only way to save the country, but I see my mistake. I visited Washington a few weeks ago, and I saw the corruption of the present administration—and so long as Abraham Lincoln and his Cabinet are in power, so long will war continue. And for what? For the preservation of the Constitution and the Union? No, but for the sake of politicians and government contractors.”[1] J.P. Morgan—American financier and banker, 1864.

The assertion that Lincoln genuinely attempted to avoid war has been preached since General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. The testimony of a Southern peace representative who spoke with Lincoln on April 4, 1861, in an effort to avert war provides keen insight into a side of the issue seldom heard or taught.[2] Some historians dismiss the importance of the meeting between Lincoln and Colonel John Brown Baldwin, but it is beyond dispute the meeting happened and pivotal issues were seriously discussed. On February 10, 1866, Baldwin testified before the Joint Committee on Reconstruction in Washington, D.C. His comments appeared in a pamphlet published in 1866 by the Staunton Speculator and he provided his account to a fellow Confederate in 1865 just prior to the end of the war.

State Governments Must Control the Federal Government

Jefferson foresaw problems between the States and the general government, and noted in an 1824 letter to John Cartwright that if a collision can “neither be avoided nor compromised, a convention of the States must be called, to ascribe the doubtful power to that department which they may think best.” He saw further that the “encroachments of State governments will tend to an excess of liberty which will correct itself, while those of the general government will tend to monarchy, which will fortify itself from day to day, instead of working its own cure. The very basis of the Tenth Amendment was to forbid the general government from assuming powers not strictly delegated.

State Governments Must Control the Federal Government

“Jefferson’s real concern was for American law, not international morality. He said he feared he had “gone beyond the Constitution” in agreeing to purchase Louisiana. Much as he believed the United States “must have the Mississippi”; much as he wanted there to be one nation on the continent, and an overland route to the Pacific coast, he was at least as much concerned for human liberty.

With respect to foreign affairs, he believed that only a strong Federal government could conduct them. But with respect to internal affairs, he believed the Federal powers were very narrowly defined, and that all other powers, including the right to secede, belonged to the States.

He utterly rejected the Federalists’ theory that the Constitution “implied” that the government could assume any powers not specifically spelled out in that document. If that we so, he felt, a future Federal government could justify almost anything on grounds that the laws it passed helping to promote the general welfare, even if their effect was to convert the republic into a monarchy.

The only protection the people had, he felt, lay in their control of their State governments. If the several States did not retain all powers not granted to the Federal government, they might as well give up any pretense of having rights of their own.

The issue of States’ rights versus Federal rights was a basic problem to the framers of the Constitution, as the vague language of the Constitution suggests; it was a basic problem to Jefferson; it became a bloody one during the Civil War, and it still to great extent plagues the United States today.”

Jefferson Davis Placed in Irons

Massachusetts-born General Nelson A. Miles rose from a lowly lieutenant of volunteers to major-general by the end of the war. He was specifically chosen by Lincoln’s Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and Gen. Ulysses Grant to command President Jefferson Davis’ guard detachment “because he was not from the line of West Point-trained professionals who might treat the former officer with military courtesy.” (Leonard Wood, Jack McCallum, 2006). It was Assistant Secretary of War Charles Dana, manipulator of the soldier vote to help ensure Lincoln’s reelection in 1864, who ordered Davis to be placed in irons.

Jefferson Davis Placed in Irons

“On the morning of the 23rd of May [1865], Captain Jerome E. Titlow of the Third Pennsylvania Artillery, entered the prisoner’s cell. “I have an unpleasant duty to perform, Sir”; and as he spoke, the senior blacksmith took the shackles from his assistant.

Davis leaped instantly from his recumbent attitude, a flush passing over his face for a moment, and then his countenance growing livid and rigid as death.

“My God! You cannot have been sent to iron me?” “Such are my orders Sir,” replied the officer, beckoning the blacksmith to approach . . . These fetters were of heavy iron, probably five-eights of an inch in thickness, and connected together by a chain of like weight.

“This is too monstrous,” groaned the prisoner, glaring hurriedly around the room, as if for some weapon, or means of self-destruction. “I demand, Captain, that you let me see the commanding officer. Can he pretend that such shackles are required to secure the safe custody of a weak old man, so guarded and in such a fort as this?”

“I tell you the world will ring with this disgrace. The war is over; the South is conquered; I have no longer any country but America, and it is for the honor of America, as for my own honor and life that I plead against this degradation. Kill me! Kill me!” he cried, passionately, throwing his arms wide open and exposing his breast, “rather than inflict on me, and my People through me, this insult worse than death.”

“I am a prisoner of war” . . . “I have been a soldier in the armies of America, and know how to die. Only kill me, and my last breath shall be a blessing on your head. But while I have life and strength to resist, for myself and my people, this thing shall never be done.”

[The sergeant] advanced to seize the prisoner . . . Immediately Mr. Davis flew on him, seized his musket and attempted to wrench it from his grasp. There was a short passionate scuffle. In a moment Davis was flung upon his bed [by four powerful assailants].”

VA whistleblowers say Denver office did no work for a year

Imagine making close to $100,000 a year and having nothing to do at the office.

It's what Denver whistleblowers say was reality for employees at the local Office of the Inspector General for Veterans Affairs.

That's the very division in charge of wiping out waste, fraud and abuse for the medical system that serves the nation's veterans.

The quote for this week comes from C.S. Lewis. He speaks of evil:
It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voices.
Second, about identity politics and the escalating power struggle:
There will be war. War is inevitable, and it will probably take place on a global scale. There has never been any movement of people of human history even one-tenth as large as the post-1965 invasion of the United States that has not either a) led to war, or b) been imposed by lethal force as the result of war. I believe the die is already cast, as do more than a few military historians of my acquaintance.
Watts Up With That - National Geographic admits they were wrong about “starving polar bear” video ... they knew that he was sick or injured, but presented it as an effect of climate change

Spectator - America’s Next Civil War Will Be Worse Than Our Last ... of that we can be sure

  YouTube - video, 1m 56s ... watch and understand

Paradigm shifts, Traditional Right - The Establishment either believes in cultural Marxism (most democrats) or is too cowardly to challenge it (most Republicans). Heartland voters are fed up with it, its advocates, and its sacred “victims” groups. In a political battle between the coastal elites and their clients on the one hand and the heartland on the other, the heartland will win. Look at the percentage of whites among people who actually vote in all the swing states. The collapse of white acquiescence in cultural Marxism, both here and in Europe, may be the biggest paradigm shift of them all. Faced with irrelevance, the Establishment howls, froths at the mouth and chews the carpet.

Winning, Market-Ticker - It's a shibboleth that when you engage in a trade war nobody wins. The problem is that it's not working that way. Do not believe for a second that trade wars cannot be "won." They can be and they are being, right now. The EU is screaming because they know good and damn well that the claims of "everyone loses" was and is a lie. The EU auto manufacturers know that they either have to drop their tariffs and restrictions on American cars or lose a good part of their export market here in the US. The Chinese want to steal all our intellectual property and sell our corporations slave labor, and call this 'free trade'. Its theft and fraud, and anything that threatens their gravy train is thus "bad" from their point of view.

Antifa Groups Call for ‘Direct Confrontation’ During Free Speech Rally Next Weekend, Members Discuss Bringing Guns

Over the past year and a half, Portland has become a hotbed of clashes between the pro-Trump group “Patriot Prayer” and Antifa. On August 4, Patriot Prayer will be holding another free speech rally and Antifa organizations are calling for “direct confrontation.”
These rallies and counter protests have repeatedly become violent and bloody, and this time, Oregon Antifa are discussing bringing guns.

“Rose City Antifa has continued their great work of doxxing the Portland area Proud Boys involved in this violence, and is also calling for militant antifascist resistance against Patriot Prayer,” a call to action published to the militant leftist website It’s Going Down states.

I'm an educator. This is why I want Judge Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court

As an educator I cheer Donald Trump’s efforts to roll back Obama-era directives to schools and universities. Those forced aggressive race-based preferences ran roughshod over student and faculty civil rights, and empowered self-righteous liberal administrators to persecute conservative scholars.

Another zealot in the White House could reverse all that, but elevating Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court would be a better way toward reversing bad policy and locking in badly needed educational and judicial reforms.

“The damage CNN is doing to the country and the world is beyond description”

Economist Martin Armstrong has accused CNN of “fueling a civil war” in America by acting as a political propaganda network.

Armstrong is known for successfully predicting the 1987 Black Monday crash as well as the 1998 Russian financial collapse.

In a reply to a reader who expressed confusion at why CNN refused to give Trump credit for the economy, North Korea and the trade deal with Europe, Armstrong said CNN’s agenda was “really becoming blatant.”

Shadow Soldier

Related image

Twenty years ago, I wrote Shadow Soldier a Western historical novel with a literary bent and a Christian message of struggling with faith in a violent land where violence was needed to do the right thing. But, J.D. Wilkes is not perfect and survival is sometimes more important than faith, if even for a short while, but always a reckoning is near.

I have recently put it on Kindle. It took so long to do this, because I had to physically re-write the text into electronic format and believe that selling the electronic edition was worth it. Still not sure if that is true, but here is a link to a sample of the book.

Here is a Sample of the book.

I'm not asking you to buy it, or read it. I have never been sure that my fiction writing was of any interest to those who visit this blog, so I have never tagged this blog with it before. But, since I am spending less time here I know there are friends who will want to keep up with what I am doing and I know I want to keep up with them, but this is the only nexus at present.

There’s nothing new about this in the UK. A few months ago my eldest daughter bounced this on to me re. my grandson, Ken.

“Dear Mum,

I’ve just been posted to the 3rd Battalion of the Gender Fluid Lesbian Light Infantry and Catamite Cavalry Regiment. It’s really bad, I can tell you. Whenever there’s heavy work to be done everybody starts identifying as female. When there’s cooking to be done everybody starts identifying as male.

We’re starving, and I’m knackered from doing all the heavy lifting. On top of that I’m hated by everybody because I’m normal. Also, somebody has rigged the free Tampax dispensers so that every so often they pop out a dildo.

When I get out I’m going to kill those perverts who were my teachers and who told me that this sort of thing was OK.

Love to Gran and tell her I’m sorry for not listening – she was right.
Ken.

P.S. We’ve just been told that next week it’s bayonet training. We already have seventy-four under deep sedation because of near terminal hysteria, 190 odd have gone AWOL and the Regimental Sergeant Mistress has delegated training responsibility to the L/Cpl in charge of anal hygiene inspectors. Everything sucks. Ken.”

Nunes Urging Trump to Declassify 20 Pages in FISA Warrant Signed by Rosenstein

The FISA warrant obtained by the FBI to spy on Trump campaign volunteer Carter Page has finally been released to the public, but it's so heavily redacted, it's meaningless -- and can be misrepresented by Democrats -- unless President Trump agrees to declassify it, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), chairman of the House intelligence committee, told "Sunday Morning Futures" with Maria Bartiromo.
