A little history from the Moneychanger

The Moneychanger

On 10 August 1821 Missouri became the 24th state to join the Union. Ironically, Missouri within a few years also prompted the first supreme court test of the constitution's Article I Section 10, "No State shall make any Thing but Gold or Silver Coin a Tender in payment of debt." As I remember, Missouri started a state bank and made its notes a legal tender. Somebody sued, and the supreme court, which in those days required that justices possess a brain bigger than a tunipseed, found that paper was not gold or silver after all. More irony: Missouri is the only state I know of that has exercised its power under Article I Section 10 to declare a tender, and declared that US 90% silver coin is its tender. That was a while ago.

On 10 August 1827 race riots in Cincinnati prompted 1,000 blacks to move to Canada. Most people don't realize that the reason the Underground Railway ended in Canada was that states north of the Ohio had constitutions forbidding blacks to settle there, or placing them under severe legal restrictions.

Marriage remains protected in Hawaii

A federal court Wednesday upheld Hawaii’s definition of marriage as one man and one woman. The court rejected a lawsuit that sought to tear down the state’s law defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman and Hawaii’s constitutional amendment that gives the legislature the power to maintain the timeless definition.

Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys defended the law and the amendment on behalf of Hawaii Family Forum, which the court allowed to intervene in the case in April.

“This ruling affirms that protecting and strengthening marriage as the union of one man and one woman is legitimate, reasonable, and good for society,” said Legal Counsel Dale Schowengerdt. “The people of Hawaii adopted a constitutional amendment to uphold marriage, and the court rightly concluded that the democratic process shouldn’t be short-circuited by judicial decree.”

Morris Dees Jr., co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, earlier this week received the ABA Medal, the highest honor from the American Bar Association in recognition of his careerlong pursuit against racism and injustice.

"To be recognized by an organization that I consider to be the glue that holds our whole legal system together in America, the American Bar Association, to be embraced by you, erases all that loneliness and tough fights that I've been through with help of so many people,” Dees said during a ceremony in Chicago.

Bracken’s Deleted Comment From The Washington Times/SWJ Editorial

Western Rifle Shooter's Association
VERBATIM POST

As referenced here, this is what Matt Bracken said before the WashTimes staff deleted it:

Draw a line intersecting the immediate reaction by the MSM to the Gabby Giffords/Tucson shooting, then Colorado/ABC/Brian Ross, and now this serious and semi-official calculated provocation by a well-known scholar-officer in a respected establishment war journal … carefully reviewed and passed along before being released.

Where does that line project?

What ever happened to wargaming scenarios against Orangeland and Pineland, designed to cause no political blowback from any quarter? Clearly, this is a calculated insult and poke in the eye to name the Evil White Racist / Tea Party Militia as the National Villain. This is just a stunning change in scenario-writing traditions to name and call out an ethnic and regional group as National Villain. This is getting close to the German Nazis naming the ‘dirty jewish vermin’ as national villain.

There has never been an arrest of a tea party person at any TEA (”taxed enough already”) Party gathering, consisting mostly of older Americans who want a smaller government. Now, these flag-waving geriatrics are recast as “enemies of the state,” deserving to be crushed by the Federal Leviathan. This is dangerous territory. This is Josef Goebbels territory by ABCNNBCBS, “American Pravda,” our MSM, and now by the Small Wars Journel, tied at the hip to the war college at Fort Leavenworth, where our future generals learn the trade.

I can only conclude that the liberal elite powers-that-be (both govt and media wings) have an epic hard-on for “evil white racist Tea Party militia terrorists.” Even if they must conjure them from insane Neo Nazis like the maniac in Wisconsin. (For those who don’t know, Nazi stands for National SOCIALIST. The other side of the Socialist coin is Communisim. They only vary in their enemies and victims, chosen by race or by class.)

And now a respected COL, US Army (ret) is whipping up the hate-on for the imaginary EWR/TPM. (Evil White Racist / Tea Pary Militia.) Paging Josef Goebbels. Or is the guilty culprit in this disgusting demi-drama the Colonel’s female sidekick, the “Civil War expert?” Is she trying to light the fuse to the next Fort Sumter, so that she can write the first history of CW2? Already have the prologue written, dear? Disgust does not begin to convey what I feel for this “academic,” busy tossing matches into the dry straw of the next mega-Waco.

I can only hope that the COL (ret) is a drunk, or suffers dementia, and somehow allowed the lady to hijack his half-byline. But the danger remains that he is fully cognizant of the meaning of the words put out under his name, and agrees whith them. And on up the editorial board which approved this abortion for dissemination.

We cannot ignore this trend. We have had our warnings. The leaders of the liberal elite establishment (gangster government and cooperating media branches) are chomping at the bit to unleash hell on their mortal enemies, the Bitter Clinger Nation.

And if it doesn’t happen naturally, they might give it some “help.” (See Fast & Furious, where the Obama regime already crossed the deliberate mass-murder-for-political-gain Rubicon, and the MSM is part of the coverup.)

What if our Confederate ancestors stated..........

" Let's not cause a ruckus, let the Union invade our homeland, rape, pillage and burn everything in sight. Maybe it will die a slow death........ ?

"One Confederate group, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, urged local Confederate supporters not to cause a ruckus.

“The best thing to do in this case is not to replace the flag you are using and let the matter die a natural death,”

wrote Aileen Ezell, president of the N.C. Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. “We gain nothing by fighting this. It is amazing to me that such a small flag has caught so much attention.” "

On Tuesday morning, August 7, 2012, alongside a host of concerned citizens that included to my delight several young people, we would post the Colors of the Confederate soldier at the Confederate soldiers monument housed on the grounds of the Haywood County courthouse located in Historic Downtown Waynesville, N.C.

The Colors were being systematically removed from the War Memorial on orders from the County manager because a practicing attorney who lived in another county just happen to have guest visiting from out of town who found it offensive to see the colors posted. Never mind that similar memorials to the Korean and Vietnam veterans are housed on the grounds with the colors of those veterans posted. The county manager who would order his staff to remove the colors every time they saw them; an act of desecration of a War Memorial.

On Friday morning, August 10, 2012, at 9:00 AM, I shall again post the Colors in honor of the some 240 soldiers who gave their lives in defense of their homeland that had been illegally invaded. May God bless their souls, and may they rest in peace with the knowledge that there are those who will defend their good names, and the cause for which they laid down their lives.

"Honour, justice and humanity call upon us to hold, and to transmit to our posterity, that liberty, which we received from our ancestors. It is not our duty to leave wealth to our children: but it is our duty, to leave liberty to them. No infamy, iniquity, or cruelty can exceed our own, if we, born and educated in a country of freedom, instilled to its blessings, and knowing their value, pusillanimously* deserting the post assigned to us by Divine Providence, surrender succeeding generations to a condition of wretchedness, from which no human efforts, in all probability, will be sufficient to extricate them; the experience of all states mournfully demonstrating to us, that when arbitrary power has been established over them, even the wisest and bravest nations, that ever flourished, have, in a few years, degenerated into abject and wretched vassals".

(from the Resolutions of Committee for the Province of Pennsylvania - 1774)

Defense: Obstacles Part X: Closing Some Gaps

A lot of time when it comes to obstacles you’ll want an obstacle with certain characteristics beyond what a normal obstacle would have. You might tailor it to deter a specific threat or take advantage of your existing resources. During this entry we’ll look at a couple of the common places we may not necessarily want to completely cut off 24/7 and examine a few methods of creating a temporary barrier that can be moved into and out of position.

One thing you might have noticed is how I started the obstacles piece in kind of a remote area and have been working it “in” towards the homestead. This entry will put us right into the immediate area around the homestead – literally almost in the front yard. The acre or two immediately surrounding the house and barns (what I’m going to refer to as our “point defense”) is going to be the focus of this entry as we look at ways to reinforce that portion of our area of operations. Now most of y’all probably don’t want to close off access permanently to the house (especially if you’re still interacting with your other tribe members) but you still want to have some kind of measure of deterrence when normal folks aren’t out and about.

First off I’m going to go back to our case study homestead and look at two areas we may need to have open or closed depending on the threat. Take a quick look at the pic below:

North Augusta gun shop owner kills suspected burglar, injures two others

Via CarlLink
Aiken County sheriff's Sgt. Jason Feemster said three men drove into the side of the building shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday. The owner shot the three men, killing one. ZACH BOYDEN-HOLMES/STAFF

One man is dead and two are recovering after being shot by a gun store owner during a burglary of his business Thursday morning.

Stephen Bayazes Jr., 57, told officers that he and his wife were asleep in an apartment at the back of the business, Guns & Ammo Gunsmith, 522 Edgefield Road, shortly before 4 a.m. when he awoke after hearing a loud crash and the activation of a silent alarm.

Bayazes grabbed an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and found three men loading guns into a van that had crashed through the side wall of the store.

After hearing the men yell to kill him, Bayazes shot one 30-round magazine of .223-caliber bullets before retreating to his bedroom to reload, he later told officers.

As he left the room, Bayazes saw two men drive away in the van.

K’Raven Aude Goodwin, 20, of Eastover, S.C., was wounded and left behind at the gun
shop.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said Goodwin died of gunshot wounds shortly after arriving at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

The two other suspects were found at Waffle House on Martintown Road, about three miles away. Investigators said the men, who had both been shot, stopped at the restaurant to seek help.

Eddie Stewart, 30, of Columbia, and Franklin Robinson, 27, of Gadsden, S.C., were taken to a hospital. Details on their injuries have not been released.

Aiken County sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Feemster said it appeared that all of the stolen merchandise was in the van.

Hours after the incident, a construction crew worked to repair the damaged wall. Parts of the ceiling and glass from display cases still littered the floor.

The store owner said it was not the first time the store has been a target.

In 2009, the store was burglarized.

Shortly afterward, Bayazes and his wife moved into an apartment in the back.

Bayazes was not injured.

Feemster said Bayazes was within his rights to use lethal force.

“If someone is breaking in your home or business, you have the right to defend yourself and not retreat,” the sergeant said.

Mississippi River too low to float steamboat

Via Ann

— The ongoing drought has left the American Queen steamboat docked in Memphis, unable to paddle on down the Mississippi River because of low water.

A trip that began Aug. 3 at Louisville, Ky., was cut short well before the steamboat’s destination of Vicksburg, Miss.

American Queen Steamboat Company’s Tim Rubacky told The Commercial Appeal that navigation problems caused by sluggish river flow make it unwise for the Queen to go any further south than Helena-West Helena. The decision to lay up at Memphis was made after talking with the Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers.

Lincoln’s & Obama's Marxists

Via Billy

Revised History
VERBATIM POST
What Sergeant Barfield and many others suffered at Fort Delaware clearly displays the Marxist mentality so many refuse to look at. Think about this—if the Marxists in Lincoln’s armies were willing to do this to Southern prisoners back then, what do you think present-day Marxists will be willing to do if they ever take complete control in this country (as they are attempting to do—from the White House on down)? How many millions died under Stalin and Mao? Think it will be any different here? If you do then you are really a candidate for belief in the Tooth Fairy.

Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s it used to be a common thing for either people who had fought in the War of Northern Aggression or someone in their families, to write accounts of their activities while in that War and have these printed up in limited editions, mostly for succeeding generations of their families and maybe a few close friends.

Although that practice pretty much died out later in the 1900s it did not, thank goodness, perish entirely. Quite often interesting historical facts can be gleaned from such publications—things that will never make it into the history books and are at variance with the sanitized versions of history most of us have been fed.

Recently I received, via email, a chapter out of just such a book, one not written until 1998. The title of the book is Campaigns of the Wise Guards–Pinckney Barfield–Walking Away from Death. . The author is L. B. Hammett and the Pinckney Barfield mentioned in the book’s title is the author’s grandfather.

From what I can gather Mr. Barfield joined a company called the Wise Guards in Georgia in 1861. He was eventually appointed 2nd sergeant and eventually transferred to Co. B of the 22nd Battalion of the Georgia Heavy Artillery.

Sergeant Barfield ended up being a prisoner of war and his observations about that were interesting. It was noted that, at Castle William, the Confederate POW’ were treated with “…the greatest consideration. The guards were Americans and the men were treated well. For all of that, Sergeant Barfield made two attempts to escape, both of which failed. However, both times he was brought back and not shot. I remember, years ago, seeing a movie about the War of Northern Aggression in which the hero was captured and when someone asked him about it he said “A good soldier always tries to secape.”

The narrative continued: “From Castle William, Pinckney and fellow-prisoners were moved to Fort Delaware at Pea Patch Island, New Jersey on the New York, Pennsylvania state line.”

The author quoted a Los Angeles Times article written in 1984 by Charles Hillinger which said: “…Stories about the suffering—from scurvy, smallpox, pneumonia, malnutrition—have passed down through the generations, making Pea Patch Island difficult to erase from the minds of the descendants. Many visit to look for the signatures of their ancestors on the brick walls of the cell blocks (at Fort Delaware).”

Sergeant Barfield noted: “We remained there (Governor’s Island) three months then were transferred to Fort Delaware, one of the worst prisons on earth and we remained there five months. We were exchanged in the winter of 62.”

The author noted, of the guards at Fort Delaware that “Union guards inflicted horrendous suffering upon Pinckney Barfield and thousands of other Confederate prisoners—How truly bad it was will never be known!” That’s right, it won’t—at least not as long as Yankee/Marxist “historians” are the ones to write the “history” books. They will continue to dwell on the horrors of Andersonville and totally ignore places like Fort Delaware and Elmira, giving the impression the Confederate POWs lived in near country club conditions.

The author noted the comments of another Confederate POW at Fort Delaware. He said: “We get hardly enough food to keep us alive—three slices of bread a day, a cup of unsweetened coffee, a cup of very thin soup and a cup of gruel…Soldiers are dying like flies around us.”

Fort Delaware has always been of particular interest to me because the commandant of that horrible place was one Albin Schoepf, a Hungarian socialist who came to this country in 1851. He was one of “Lincoln’s Marxists” and at Fort Delaware, apparently he was not alone.

The author observed: “At Fort Delaware Pinckney learned the true meaning of the horrors of war.” Sergeant Barfield himself noted “There we were under German guards and many of the men died from ill treatment and improper care. We were there six months, and during the time, I found the true meaning of war.” Pinckney observed that he had seen men standing in groups, while talking about home and loved ones. The guards, not caring how many they killed, shot in among them claiming of course, the prisoners were plotting to escape. Many died of exposure. Pinckney said every morning the dead were stacked in carts, one a-top the other in heaps, to be dumped like so much trash and hauled away.” Barfield also said “We were confined in a large fenced place and the only shelter from the weather was to be ill and brave enough to try the hospital…I got sick with so much exposure, poor treatment and bad food, but I stayed away from the hospital shed and prayed for an exchange of prisoners. If there was an exchange, my only chance was to remain with the well men.” When the exchange did come, two friends helped Barfield out, literally holding him up between them so he would not appear sick.

Interestingly enough, one of the things they complain most about at Andersonville was the lack of shelter from the weather. Why was that never an issue at Fort Delaware? The weather there was a lot more severe there than in Georgia. However, we are not supposed to notice little things like that and the “historians” would rather we didn’t so it’s never mentioned.

Donnie Kennedy and I, in our book Lincoln’s Marxists (Pelican Publishing) deal with Albin Shoepf on page 205-207. His socialist mentality and the amount of brutality he allowed his guards. We noted, on page 206 that: “In cruelty and death, the torture endured by Confederate prisoners under General Schoepf ranks with the worst ever suffered by American prisoners of war, including those held by the Japanese in World War 2.”

Feds seize family's guns, money

After almost a year in jail and a three-week trial, a jury has declared the members of the Reese family not guilty on 24 of the 28 counts against them. The jury did convict three of the four family members of making false statements in connection with the acquisition of firearms. Remington Reese, the 20-year old younger son, was acquitted of all charges, while his older brother, Ryin was found guilty on two counts and his father and mother, Rick and Terri, were found guilty on one count each. The charges carry a potential sentence of five years and $50,000 for each count, but those convicted typically receive sentences of about one year.

Those sentences are what judges give to the criminals who knowingly and intentionally lie on federal forms though, not firearms dealers who “should have known” that customers were lying to them. It’s quite possible that, as federally licensed firearms dealers, the Reeses will be held to a higher standard and receive tougher sentences. Sentencing is scheduled for early October. Rick and Ryin will continue to be held without bail, but Terri will remain out on bail until sentence is passed. Remington was released from custody at the conclusion of the trial.

As reported previously in this column, Rick Reese and his family ran a gun shop outside of Deming, N.M., for more than 17 years. Over that time they built up the business into a profitable enterprise, and Rick had planned to retire and close the store. His eldest son, Ryin, 24, was in the process of obtaining a Federal Firearms License, or FFL, of his own and was opening a store in nearby Las Cruces, N.M. In August of last year, local ATF agents asked the family to come down to their offices to discuss Ryin’s FFL application. When the family showed up at the ATF office, they were arrested on charges of conspiring to illegally sell firearms and assist in smuggling them to Mexico, money laundering (because they supposedly knew the money paying for the guns had come from illegal activities) and making false statements in connection with the acquisition of firearms.

Obama’s College Classmate: ‘The Obama Scandal Is at Columbia’

Via Ryan

Obamas college records

I am President Obama’s classmate at Columbia University, Class of ’83. I am also one of the most accurate Las Vegas oddsmakers and prognosticators. Accurate enough that I was awarded my own star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars. And I smell something rotten in Denmark. Obama has a big skeleton in his closet. It’s his college records. Call it “gut instinct” but my gut is almost always right. Obama has a secret hidden at Columbia- and it’s a bad one that threatens to bring down his presidency. Gut instinct is how I’ve made my living for 29 years since graduating Columbia.

Obama and his infamous strategist David Axelrod understand how to play political hardball, the best it’s ever been played. Team Obama has decided to distract America’s voters by condemning Mitt Romney for not releasing enough years of his tax returns. It’s the perfect cover. Obama knows the best defense is a bold offense. Just keep attacking Mitt and blaming him for secrecy and evasion, while accusing him of having a scandal that doesn’t exist. Then ask followers like Senator Harry Reid to chase the lead. The U.S. Senate Majority Leader appears to now be making up stories out of thin air, about tax returns he knows nothing about. It’s a cynical, brilliant, and vicious strategy. Make Romney defend, so he can’t attack the real Obama scandal.

This is classic Axelrod. Obama has won several elections in his career by slandering his opponents and leaking sealed documents. Not only do these insinuations and leaks ruin the credibility and reputation of Obama’s opponents, they keep them on the defensive and off Obama’s trail of sealed documents.

By attacking Romney’s tax records, Obama’s socialist cabal creates a problem that doesn’t exist. Is the U.S. Senate Majority Leader making up stories out of thin air? You decide. But the reason for this baseless attack is clear- make Romney defend, so not only is he “off message” but it helps the media ignore the real Obama scandal.

My answer for Romney? Call Obama’s bluff.

Romney should call a press conference and issue a challenge in front of the nation. He should agree to release more of his tax returns, only if Obama unseals his college records. Simple and straight-forward. Mitt should ask “What could possibly be so embarrassing in your college records from 29 years ago that you are afraid to let America’s voters see? If it’s THAT bad, maybe it’s something the voters ought to see.” Suddenly the tables are turned. Now Obama is on the defensive.

My bet is that Obama will never unseal his records because they contain information that could destroy his chances for re-election. Once this challenge is made public, my prediction is you’ll never hear about Mitt’s tax returns ever again.

Why are the college records, of a 51-year-old President of the United States, so important to keep secret? I think I know the answer.
