The Legacy of Francis Butler Simkins

 

A biographer defined Francis Butler Simkins as “one of the most interesting intellectual forces of his generation.” As a scholar who questioned conventional thinking he “helped lay the foundation of the Civil Rights Movement. Yet, when these momentous events of the 1950s and 1960s challenged the traditional order in the American South, Simkins discovered much…that he believed should be conserved and [thus] became a spokesman for tradition.”

The Francis Butler Simkins that I knew from 1950 until his death in 1966 was a complex man, who enjoyed nothing more than questioning and offering a fresh look at the past. He delighted in ideas and unusual individuals; only dullness bored him. As a scholar, he stood ahead of most of his contemporaries, not just because of his perceptive views and insights, but because he wrote the kind if history that upset people–Northerners as well as Southerners.

Born in Edgefield, South Carolina, December 14, 1897, Simkins took his undergraduate degree in 1918 from the University of South Carolina, where he studied history with Professor Yates Snowden, and in 1920 received an M.A. and in 1926 a Ph.D from Columbia University.

Will Jim Webb be Trump's secretary of Defense?

Jim Webb is, at least in a nominal sense, a Democrat. Last year, he briefly pursued the Democratic nomination for president, a run best remembered for his joke about killing the Vietnamese soldier who threw a grenade at him.

Now Webb is singing Donald Trump’s praises, and may have his eye on a cabinet job. “I would like salute Donald Trump for his tenacity and for the uniqueness of his campaign,” Webb during a speech to a hundred or so attendees at a foreign policy symposium in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

To hear Webb tell it, in fact, he tried to do what Trump did. “It took an outsider, whatever his wealth and lack of government experience, to tell the truth,” Webb said, before explaining that his own efforts in this regard were tripped up by his lack of wealth and an intransigent Democratic elite.

Permian’s Wolfcamp formation called biggest shale oil field in U.S.

In a troubled oil world, the Permian Basin is the gift that keeps on giving.

One portion of the giant field, known as the Wolfcamp formation, was found to hold 20 billion barrels of oil trapped in four layers of shale beneath West Texas. That’s almost three times larger than North Dakota’s Bakken play and the single largest U.S. unconventional crude accumulation ever assessed, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. At current prices, that oil is worth almost $900 billion.

Donald Trump can easily reverse Obama, fast-track Keystone pipeline

A Trump White House, with the stroke of a pen, could reverse the Obama administration’s course on the Keystone XL oil pipeline and put the once-shelved project on a fast track to completion.

Analysts said the key to President Obama’s rejection of the pipeline last year was a George W. Bush-era executive order giving the State Department a say in energy projects that cross international boundaries. Voiding that executive order would return the decision to energy regulators, who have been far more amenable to Keystone.

“I predict this pipeline will get finished and be in full operation in the next 18 to 24 months,” said Brigham McCown, who served as first acting administrator of the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration in 2005 and 2006. “Once President Trump says, ‘Make this happen,’ I think you’ll see the government swing back and make that happen.”

Pence Eliminates Lobbyists from Trump Transition Team

Vice President-elect Mike Pence is leading the charge with President-Elect Donald Trump and his team in the transitioning of power. Pence’s first order of business: eliminating corporate and special interest lobbyists from the team. With lobbyists being removed from key roles, a source claims it “makes good on [Trump’s] vision of how he wants his government constructed.”

Following Gov. Chris Christie’s demotion from leading the transition team, Gov. Pence has been leading the forefront after signing a memorandum of understanding, putting him in charge of the transition team Tuesday evening.  Before the signing, Pence ignored pestering questions from reporters as he entered Trump Tower with a thick binder tucked under his arm, and then did the same as he left six hours late.

In the aftermath of Election Day—November 8th, 2016—the Democrat-run, propaganda media began telling Americans that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote.  But this is simply not true.

Millions of Uncounted Ballots Favor Trump

To begin, millions of absentee ballots remain untallied and will never be counted.  The reason is that states only count absentee ballots, if they are more numerous than the votes between the top two vote-getters.  For example, if Trump wins in Michigan by 13,000 votes, and there are 12,999 absentee ballots, it is not worth counting them, as a practical matter, since those votes could not change the result.  And here is the truth about absentee ballots in America: 2/3 of absentee voters have historically voted Republican, probably because so many absentee voters are elderly shut-ins who are more conservative.  Across states, millions of ballots will remain uncounted that would likely run in Trump’s favor by 2 to 1, boosting his vote total by hundreds of thousands, if not millions, more than Hillary’s vote total.

Breitbart News planning lawsuit against 'major media company'

Breitbart News is preparing a lawsuit against a "major media company" over claims that it is a white nationalist website, it said in an exclusive statement to The Hill.

The website has been under intense scrutiny since President-elect Donald Trump named Stephen Bannon as a senior White House counselor and strategist. Bannon is the former executive chairman of Breitbart News, and the site has become associated with the “alt-right” movement that helped propel Trump’s candidacy.

"Breitbart News Network, a pro-America, conservative website, is preparing a multi-million dollar lawsuit against a major media company for its baseless and defamatory claim that Breitbart News is a ‘white nationalist website,’” the statement reads.

2. Has it hired any reporters who are even Republicans?

3. Has it changed its policies that allowed journalists to express their opinions about the events and people they covered in their news stories?

4. Will it ask the Pulitzer Prize board to withdraw, and its reporters to return, any prizes that might be awarded for news stories that contained reporters’ personal opinions?

5. Have its editors retracted misleading news headlines that expressed opinions or pure speculation--such as the paper’s coverage of Trump’s tax returns?

6. Has it fired reporters who admitted to writing politically motivated “news” stories and encouraged interview subjects to talk to them so they could stop Trump?

7.  Has it retracted its shameful election-eve front-page story “reporting” on Trump’s innermost thoughts and feelings, virtually every sentence of which is filled with reporters’ opinions and speculations--featuring claims like “he is struggling to suppress his bottomless need for attention”?
If the answer to all of these questions is “no”--why would anyone believe that the paper is now “rededicated” to honesty? And why would anyone trust the New York Times to report on American politics?

Police in Austin, Texas have released the identities and mugshots of six communists who participated in weekend demonstrations near the state capitol building in response to the election of Donald Trump as president.

Specifically, the Texas Department of Public Safety told South Texas CBS affiliate KGBT-TV, the communist protesters were arrested because they participated in an assault against other demonstrators who had come out to support Trump.

Ford shifts truck production from Mexico to Ohio

Ford's heavy duty pickup trucks which used to be built in Mexico started rolling off an assembly line in Ohio this week.

That's good news for the 1,000 Ford workers in Ohio, who might have otherwise been out of work.
It's also good publicity for Ford (F), which has been under fire for investing so much in Mexico. In April, the automaker said it would invest $2.5 billion in transmission plants in the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Guanajuato, creating about 3,800 jobs there.

Ford's south-of-the-border strategy has drawn heavy criticism from groups such as the United Auto Workers union and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Anti-Trump Protesters Block Ambulance; Father of 4-Year-Old Girl Dies

The father of a 4-year-old girl died after anti-Trump protesters blocked roads and delayed an ambulance from reaching the hospital, according to an anguished message posted on Facebook.

“I have to unfacebook for a few days. I had a patient die during a transfer last night because our ambulance was stopped by protesters and had to drive an extra 45 minutes around the blocked roads,” the anonymous post reads.

“I can’t today. They can give their f**king safety pins to my patient’s fatherless 4 year old daughter,” the post concludes.
