Broad Georgia ethics probe targets Abrams — and her backers

Via Billy

The head of Georgia’s ethics commission has filed a spate of subpoenas targeting groups led by Stacey Abrams and the chairwoman of the state Democratic Party, prompting criticism that he’s trying to exact political revenge against Republican Gov. Brian Kemp’s political opponents.
The subpoenas obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution were filed on April 26 by new ethics chief David Emadi and seek extensive financial, bank and payroll records from the Abrams’ campaign, which raised roughly $30 million in last year’s race against Kemp.

How an Alabama prostitute and South's 'bitterest rebel' were linked to John Wilkes Booth

Via Jeffrey

On Dec. 1, 1860, a handsome and charismatic actor took the stage in Montgomery, playing the title role in a Shakespearean play. John Wilkes Booth, billed as "Mr. J. Wilkes Booth," would portray Richard III, a ruler who was overthrown and murdered, nearly five years before Booth would murder President Abraham Lincoln.

Adam Goodheart wrote for The New York Times Opinionator: "Just 22 years old, trim and athletic, with tousled hair and lustrous eyes, he had an especially mesmerizing effect on the young ladies of Montgomery... here in the Deep South, he had finally won the long-sought stardom." John Wilkes Booth’s Body Double

Stories and accounts persist as to whether someone else is buried in John Wilkes Booth’s grave. I started this series out with commentary on that, and during all of this, I have seen nothing that still does not raise the question. The facial recognition technique I noted in the first article, which compared photos of John Wilkes Booth as a young man and David George of Enid, Oklahoma as an old man seems to point to the fact that there is only a one percent chance that George was not Booth.

French Senate Defies Macron, Says Notre Dame Should Be Rebuilt Exactly How It Was

Via Billy

Roses have been laid near Notre-Dame-de Paris Cathedral a day after a fire devastated the cathedral in central Paris on April 16, 2019.

Over the weekend, the French Senate approved a bill paving the way forward for restoring Notre Dame cathedral, which nearly burned to the ground back in April in a construction fire. There's one caveat, however: the cathedral must be returned to its "last known visual state."

The former British spy who produced a dossier describing alleged links between Donald Trump and Russia will not cooperate with a prosecutor assigned by U.S. Attorney General William Barr to review how the investigations of Trump and his 2016 election campaign began, a source with knowledge of the situation said.

Christopher Steele, a former Russia expert for the British spy agency MI6, will not answer questions from prosecutor John Durham, named by Barr to examine the origins of the investigations into Trump and his campaign team, said the source close to Steele’s London-based private investigation firm, Orbis Business Intelligence.

Hardwired for Faith

Over the past several years, as I progressed from being an atheist since my late teens to regaining my early faith in my mid 40's – regaining and then some, and to nobody’s greater surprise than my own – I came to realize what I believe is a Truth: people are hardwired to believe in something larger than themselves.  It seems I’m not alone – and in what I consider yet another example of something “in the air” I am seeing this same concept in multiple places.  For example; The Legacy of the West (bolding added):

'Polar Bear' memorial in Troy marks a largely forgotten GI mission in WWI Russia

Via Papa

The first 56 who lie buried near the marble statue of the polar bear died in Russia, where their government sent them to fight ghosts when the rest of the world was celebrating the end of the Great War.

The others, though — the ones who bought their burial plots close by, across a pathway from the Polar Bear Monument — were lucky enough to come home. And years later, when so many others had forgotten the sad and sorry story of the Polar Bear Expedition, they made the choice to lie forever near their brothers in shared misery.

Thomas cites eugenics, says Supreme Court will have to address abortion 'soon'

 Image result for clarence Thomas

Justice Clarence Thomas on Tuesday said that while he agrees with the Supreme Court's decision to not take up a challenge to an Indiana abortion law at this moment, he believes the court will have to take up the issue in the near future.

The Supreme Court ruled to uphold an Indiana law on the disposal of fetal remains but declined to review a lower court's ruling blocking an Indiana law banning abortions on the basis of the fetus's sex, disability or ethnicity.
