On Dec. 1, 1860, a
handsome and charismatic actor took the stage in Montgomery, playing the
title role in a Shakespearean play. John Wilkes Booth, billed as "Mr.
J. Wilkes Booth," would portray Richard III, a ruler who was overthrown
and murdered, nearly five years before Booth would murder President
Abraham Lincoln.
