Knife ID: Help Needed
Via Cousin Dale"I need your help with a knife I bought recently......I've usually got a
good idea of what I'm buying but this was a guess. I've included two
pics. It's a totally hand made knife with sheath, and the seller
insisted it was a WW2 trench knife. I realized immediately it wasn't any
type of manufactured knife and the sheath was stitched with no
riveting. The back of the sheath did have WW2 Canadian soldier info on
it, along with where he was injured and when. Take at look at the end of
the handle! "CS"! The emblem is different though, and looks like it
actually says "CSE". While Canada did have Canadian Special Forces in
WW2 I could not locate this symbol anywhere. However, I did find several
nearly identical knives under classifications of "Alabama toothpick"
and "Arkansas toothpick". Any thoughts? I don't like to assume, but all
indicators I've seen so far indicate this knife is actually a home made
Confederate toothpick commonly used in WW1 and WW2. I thought perhaps
you may have seen the emblem or understand this knife better than
myself, and would appreciate any feedback!"

The blade, but not the handle, looks like a Fairbairn knife. Of course the dimensions may not match.

DeleteAs stated above, very Fairborne - Sykes daggerish. Maybe the pommel cap is a custom owner name abbreviation ?

Pretty typical of the "sterile" knives used (and often customized by troops) by British SOE during WW2. It could also be a fake as there has been a cottage industry "faking" ww2 combat knives for decades as they command "stupid" money.--Ray--- PS if your pal paid under 50$ its probably real. The more he shelled out the bigger the chance its a "commando" fake. There is a guy who runs an outfit called "Sniders Tresures" who has a websight where 99% of the crap on it is 100 fake. Ebay is the worst place on earth for it though.

ReplyDeleteI thought the blade did look like a Fairborne-Sykes, and it definitely was used in WW2. I'd agree that it's been modified, but the owner's initials from WW2 records didn't match. It's now the largest double edged dagger I have (7.5" blade), and a great addition to the collection! Thanks to all for the effort and feedback. :)
