Shock: Krugman Turns on 'Elites'

View Image

Well, what I've been hearing with growing frequency from members of the policy elite – self-appointed wise men, officials, and pundits in good standing – is the claim that it's mostly the public's fault. The idea is that we got into this mess because voters wanted something for nothing, and weak-minded politicians catered to the electorate's foolishness. So this seems like a good time to point out that this blame-the-public view isn't just self-serving, it's dead wrong. The fact is that what we're experiencing right now is a top-down disaster. The policies that got us into this mess weren't responses to public demand. They were, with few exceptions, policies championed by small groups of influential people – in many cases, the same people now lecturing the rest of us on the need to get serious. And by trying to shift the blame to the general populace, elites are ducking some much-needed reflection on their own catastrophic mistakes. – New York Times/Paul Krugman

Dominant Social Theme: We have to level blame where it belongs, just not too much.

Free-Market Analysis: This is a fairly remarkable article that uber-liberal New York Times media star Paul Krugman (left) has written. Imagine even a few years ago that an article by one of the Times' most prestigious analysts would frankly castigate America's ruling class and one begins to get a sense of the growing panic that must be circulating at the top of the proverbial heap. Krugman, who evidently and obviously rubs shoulders with these people, tells us that fingers are starting to be pointed – not at others in the US ruling class but at the larger civilian population. He wants to make clear he disapproves.

The Top Ten Myths of Islam = How the West is Being Misled

Mike Scruggs

The death of Osama bin Laden at the hands of American combat assault teams resulted in a burst of media discussion and pontification on the nature of terrorism and Islam. While being rid of al-Qaeda's mastermind of terror and mass murder was welcome news, the media discussion revealed how successful the strange alliance of Muslim propaganda and unwary liberal ideology has been in misleading Americans on the true nature of Islam and its threat to Western civilization. Even a conservative Fox News Channel pundit repeated a common myth over and over again, demonstrating either an unfortunately shallow knowledge of Islam or a lack of political courage. Here is my list of ten widely believed myths about Islam.

  1. Osama bin Laden hijacked the peaceful religion of Islam and distorted its teachings to suit al-Qaeda's purposes. No! No! No! Terrorism and violence against all who oppose Islam is deeply imbedded in the Koran and teachings of Muhammad. In justifying his terrorist attacks, Osama bin Laden quoted the Koran accurately, and his interpretation was consistent with the vast majority of Muslim clerics and scholars today and for the last fourteen hundred years. Bin Laden was driven by a purist vision of Islam based on the Koran and teachings of Muhammad. That fundamentalist vision is still the mainstream of Muslim faith and life. The Koran (8: 12) instructs Muslims to “instill terror into the hearts of unbelievers” and in 8: 39 instructs Muslims to fight unbelievers until “there prevails justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere.” The injunction to spread and enforce Islam by the sword is everywhere in the Koran and the deeds of Muhammad. At least 109 verses call for violent Jihad (holy war) against all unbelievers. Muslims who reject these teachings risk severe penalties under Sharia Law. According to the most reliable Muslim scholarship, in 627 Muhammad's forces attacked the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayzah, the last Jewish tribe in the Medina area, and defeated them. The Prophet offered the men of Banu Qurayzah the choice of conversion to Islam or death. Nearly all chose death. The Prophet had between 600 and 900 decapitated in a ditch. The women, who were forced to watch the decapitations, were raped and taken as concubines. The children were divided as slaves.
  2. Islam is a religion of peace. The discussion on myth 1 should be enough to refute this often-repeated misrepresentation. The peace of Islam comes only when all are united in submission to Islam.
  3. Terrorism does not come from Islam. Again, the discussion of myth 1 ought to be sufficient to refute this often-repeated whitewashing of Islam. Islam is not the only source of terrorism. Terrorism comes from the darkness of sinful human hearts in rebellion against the God of Judeo-Christian scriptures, but terrorism against all who oppose Islam is an essential teaching of the Koran and Muhammad.
  4. Allah and the God of the Bible are the same god. This is a common but enormously destructive American and European heresy cultivated by many years of interfaith propaganda. It might be called a chief tenet of modern liberalism and multiculturalism, but it is antithetical to any orthodox form of Judaism or Biblical Christianity. The Koran contains many inaccurate and distorted borrowings from Jewish and Christian scriptures, but Allah and the Lord God of Judeo-Christian scriptures are remarkably different personalities. These differences are frequently reflected in moral outlook and teachings. The Universalist heresy that there are many roads to heaven is now prevalent in the West, but Christians should be aware that it is strongly rebuked by Christ himself, most prominently in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” There are many other supporting verses. “Allah” may be the Arabic word for god, but the Allah of the Koran is either a false god or a highly distorted and spiritually destructive imitation of the God of the Bible. The Triune God of Christian theology is condemned by the Koran, Muhammad and modern Islam.
  5. The Koran teaches tolerance for other religions. Apologists for Islam usually quote Koran 2: 256, “Let there be no compulsion in religion” to back this claim. However, under the Muslim Rule of Abrogation, this verse is abrogated by later verses, especially 4: 89, instructing Muslims to “seize and slay wherever ye find” infidels or Muslims who reject the faith. Islam's record is one of intolerance for and violence against unbelievers and dissenters unparalleled in human history.
  6. Jihad means inner spiritual struggle. There is little mention or emphasis of this in the Koran. Muhammad advocated action by the sword on numerous occasions. Koran 4:95 actually states that Jihad by fighting is the most honorable form of Jihad. “Allah has granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home).”
  7. Islam is compatible with Western-style democracy. On the contrary, Shariah Law

is the supreme guide of Islam. Democracy is the rule of men, while Sharia is the rule of Allah.

  1. Poverty and ignorance are the origin of terrorism. Most Muslim terrorists have been relatively well-educated, middle class, students of Islam.
  2. The Koran does not encourage suicidal terrorist attacks. The Koran condemns

suicide resulting from human weakness. It praises and assures special glory in paradise for self-sacrifice made for the advance of Islam.

  1. Muslim scholars and clerics are a reliable source of knowledge on Islam. The Islamic doctrine of Taqiyya allows Muslims to lie and deceive non-Muslims to advance Islam. In fact, many Koranic verses calling for fairness, benevolence, charity, and mercy for Muslims, specifically or by implication exclude non-Muslims.

I don't get it

"A socialist policy is abhorrent to the British ideas of freedom. Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance."

What repercussions? West can take any and spit them back in their face.

The threats came just after Kaufman, a champion of gun rights on her talk show, had been chosen as chief of staff by freshman U.S. Rep. Alan West, a Republican favorite of the Tea Party. Kaufman decided after the lockdown not to take the position, she said, to avoid political repercussions for West.

The Abraham Lincoln haters out there will like this Doug Casey rant. He believes the powder keg has been lit and it will blow before the year is out. Think 1789 in France and 1861 in the US. Times to try men’s souls.

AP's comments.
In it, the ramifications of the Second American Revolution are discussed and linked to our embryonic "troubles" brewing today.

It is a good read, in my opinion, worth every second of time.

.....

I've been thinking a lot about that war lately, along the same lines of this interview.

I'm so tired of the slavery issue being brought up over and over to try to end the discussion whenever the war and its causes are debated.

Here's the logic:

The South had slaves, therefore they were wrong.

Oh.

So... it follows that the Americans were automatically wrong in the Revolution. But wait, they had slaves under the Brits, so the Brits condoned it as well. So the Brits were wrong.

Moral High Ground, anyone?

Bible With Two Bullet Holes

"…There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our overthrow. … Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence, I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing."

The Invasion of Poland (1 September - 6 October 1939)

Beginning in 1933, Germany pursued a policy of rapprochement with Poland, trying to improve German–Polish relations, culminating in the German–Polish Non-Aggression Pact of 1934. In 1935 Germany had hoped to manoeuvre Poland into the Anti-Comintern Pact, forming a cooperative front against the Soviet Union, and territorial concessions but the Poles feared that their independence would eventually be threatened altogether. Poland would have been granted territory of its own, to its northeast, in return for the reversal of German territorial losses, stipulated by the Treaty of Versailles, of the "Polish Corridor" and the city of Danzig.

Though Britain also refused to join the Pact in 1935, an agreement called The Stresa Front was made between France, Britain and Italy designed to keep Nazi Germany from extending beyond her present borders. In particular, these nations tried to block "German expansionism", especially the annexation of Austria. Even so, only two months later, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement was signed between the United Kingdom and Nazi Germany in June 1935. The UK had not discussed this with its Stresa partners and the front was seriously damaged. The effort failed entirely when, in 1936, Italy privately sanctioned the remilitarization of the Rhienland and the Anschluss of Austria and Britain signed on to the Anti-Comintern Pact on November 25, 1936. Further, both Britain and France were complicit in the 1938 Munich Agreement while Poland participated in the partition of Czechoslovakia that followed, although they were not part of the agreement. The Anti-Comintern Pact would be renewed on November 25, 1941 with all 12 Allied and Axis nations as signatories.

By 1937, Germany began to increase its demands for Danzig, while proposing that a roadway be built in order to connect East Prussia with Germany proper, running through the Polish Corridor. Poland rejected this proposal and instead, on 31 March 1937, Poland was backed by a guarantee from Britain and France that stated that Polish territorial integrity would be defended with their support. At the same time, Chamberlain and his supporters believed war could be avoided and hoped Germany would agree to leave the rest of Poland alone if a deal could be stuck regarding Danzig and the Polish Corridor.

However, with the surprise signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact on 23 August, the Soviet Union neutralized the possibility of German opposition to a campaign against Poland and war became possible. In a secret protocol of the pact, the Germans and the Soviets agreed to divide Eastern Europe, including Poland, into two spheres of influence; the western third of the country was to go to Germany and the eastern two-thirds to the Soviet Union. The German-Soviet assault was originally scheduled to begin on 26 August but on 25 August the Polish-British Common Defence Pact was signed as an annex to the Franco-Polish Military Alliance. In this accord, Britain committed itself to the defence of Poland, guaranteeing to preserve Polish independence. On 26 August Hitler tried to dissuade the British and the French from interfering in the upcoming conflict, even pledging that the Wehrmacht forces would be made available to Britain's empire in the future. Meanwhile, the number of increased overflights by high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and cross border troop movements signalled that war was imminent.

Image

On 30 August the Polish Navy sent its destroyer flotilla to Britain, executing 'Operation Peking'. On the same day, Marshal of Poland Edward Rydz-Śmigły announced the mobilization of Polish troops but he was pressured into revoking the order by the French who, failing to realize that the Germans and Soviets were fully mobilized and concentrated at the Polish border, still hoped for a diplomatic settlement. On 1 September 1939, forces of the USSR invaded Poland without a formal declaration of war. The Soviet government announced that it was acting to protect the Ukrainians and Belarusians who lived in the eastern part of Poland. Facing 33 divisions and 11 independent brigades, the unprepared Polish forces in the east were quickly driven back. Although Poland had begun mobilization on 30 Aug 70% of their forces were in the North and West of the country and, though they declared war on the Soviet Union on 3 September, the Allied governments could not provide any meaningful support. Only the Advanced Air Striking Force of the RAF/AAF (10/4 bmbr and 2/6 ftr sqn's) and Polforce (3rd French Army) were enroute to Poland by 7 Sept.

Image

On 29 August, prompted by the British, Germany had issued a diplomatic offer to intervene in the event of a Soviet attack in return for the city of Danzig and a plebiscite in the Polish Corridor within the year. This was accepted by the Polish government on 30 Aug and on 17 Sep Germany, aided by Slovakia, moved into Poland with 63 divisions and four independent brigades. The more mechanized elements of the German army quickly outstripped the slower Polish Army units and took up positions roughly along the Pisa, Narev, Vistula and San rivers, using it's Non-Aggression Pact with the Soviet Union to 'negotiate' the pre-arraigned end to the advance wherever the two forces met. The Germans would not advance against the Soviets and the Poles couldn't attack without losing German support. Likewise, it appeared that the Soviets could not advance without bringing Germany into the war against them. The Germans declared that they were committed to remain for as long as necessary, for all intents annexing western Poland.
