Free woman of color Marie Therese Carmelite Anty Metoyer’s portrait,
painted circa 1830. She was the wife of Auguste Metoyer and the granddaughter of
Marie Therese Coincoin.
Some of Louisiana's most prosperous planters and farmers were free African
Americans, the owners of more property than free blacks in any other state. In
1860 there were 472 free black Louisianians whose average real estate holdings
were worth over $10,000. Far behind Louisiana in second place was South
Carolina, whose 162 free blacks in the same category had an average real estate
holding of less than $5,000 in 1860. In addition, three out of every ten free
black estate owners in Louisiana were women.
The free black Metoyer family lived in the Natchitoches area and acquired vast holdings of land and slaves during the antebellum period. In 1830, at the height of their affluence, the Metoyers owned more slaves than any other free black family in the United States. This family traced its beginnings to Marie-Thérèze, also known by her African name of Coincoin, who created an empire with her fourteen children on the small plot of land that her white common-law husband, Pierre Metoyer, left her in 1778.

To Serve and Protect?

Early Friday morning we had an incidence at our manufacturing facility. Around 12:30AM the cameras picked up activity in our dumpster area. All the scrap steel left when we cut our product out of our sheet material gets loaded into a large dumpster probably around 32 feet long by 7 foot across and 6 foot deep. We have seen a large increase in theft of the scrap steel so we put in a security system with digital cameras in strategic locations inside and outside of the building.
When activity was picked up a signal was sent to our alarm company but by the time the police arrived the people had loaded their small truck and left. We checked the video recording that morning and sure enough two males backed a S10 pickup alongside the dumpster and loaded the truck. A call to surrounding area scrap yards with a description of the material and tuck located where they were taking it.
The police came in after I called them and I expected that once I gave them all the info they would they would arrest the perps but oh no. The officer told me that they could not charge them with anything. I said what the hell they are stealing my scrap material and I am potentially losing a couple grand or more a month. the officer said it was likely that they did not know they were stealing as dumpster diving happens all the time. My reply was that there was no way they could really believe that because someone who pulls up in the middle of the night with floppy ball caps pulled down to help disguise their faces knows they are stealing or they would just come in the middle of the day.
Reply was that they would never make theft charges stick but if I put up no trespassing signs and wrote a letter to the police and hand delivered it and then signed several forms they could charge anyone on the premises without permission with trespassing. I laughed and said nothing happens with trespassing charges as I know a business that was hit three times with vandalism and all the perp got each time was a slap on the wrist and the third time a suspended fine. the business owner was told to fill out a restraining order and then they could charge them with violating the restraining order.
I told the police officer that since I owned the building and if I happened to come upon the people removing material from the dumpster and felt threatened with bodily harm when I asked them to leave I would be within my rights to protect myself. I asked don't you think it would be better to charge these people with stealing than it would to someday be called because myself or some other business owner felt the need to protect themselves because they surprised these people in the process of removing something from the premises that did not belong.
So much for the money spent on an expensive alarm and camera system and so much for protect and serve. We already live in a PC world without the rule of law...

Fast and Furious back in headlines as Univision reportedly finds more victims
Spanish-language television network Univision plans to air a television special that it said reveals more violence than previously known, as well as the stories of how many more Operation Fast and Furious victims were killed, the network announced in a Friday release.
“The consequences of the controversial ‘Fast and Furious’ undercover operation put in place by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2009 have been deadlier than what has been made public to date,” the network said. “The exclusive, in-depth investigation by Univision News’ award-winning Investigative Unit — Univision Investiga — has found that the guns that crossed the border as part of Operation Fast and Furious caused dozens of deaths inside Mexico.”
Among other groups of Fast and Furious victim stories Univision says it will tell in the special to air Sunday evening at 7 p.m., is one about how “16 young people attending a party in a residential area of Ciudad Juárez in January of 2010″ were gunned down with weapons the Obama administration gave to drug cartel criminals through Fast and Furious.

WANTED, AN UNPRACTICAL MAN
Via Frank
But I know that this primary pursuit of the theory (which is but pursuit of the aim) exposes one to the cheap charge of fiddling while Rome is burning. A school, of which Lord Rosebery is representative, has endeavored to substitute for the moral or social ideals which have hitherto been the motive of politics a general coherency or completeness in the social system which has gained the nick-name of "efficiency."
I am not very certain of the secret doctrine of this sect in the matter. But, as far as I can make out, "efficiency" means that we ought to discover everything about a machine except what it is for. There has arisen in our time a most singular fancy: the fancy that when things go very wrong we need a practical man. It would be far truer to say, that when things go very wrong we need an unpractical man. Certainly, at least, we need a theorist. A practical man means a man accustomed to mere daily practice, to the way things commonly work. When things will not work, you must have the thinker, the man who has some doctrine about why they work at all. It is wrong to fiddle while Rome is burning; but it is quite right to study the theory of hydraulics while Rome is burning. "

North Carolina Teacher Allegedly Cuts Disabled Student's Hair
VERBATIM
The North Carolina mom of a 7-year-old girl with Down Syndrome is
accusing a teacher of cutting off several inches of her daughter's
beloved hair without her consent.
"Most of the time, she's always brushing her hair, always doing something with her hair," Jesslyn's mother, Jessica Stirewalp, told ABC News' Charlotte affiliate, WSOC-TV.
Stirewalp claims that a Millbridge Elementary School teacher in Rowan County, N.C., cut Jesslyn's hair in class on Friday.
Stirewalp says that she was shocked when Jesslyn got home from school.
"Instead of four inches, it was more [like] eight inches. And when she
walked in the house, you could tell that she thought she was in
trouble," Stirewalp told WSOC. "I mean, it hurts my feelings, and I know it hurts her feelings."
The mom said that she has heard conflicting explanations for why
Jesslyn's hair was cut. She said the teacher initially told her on the
phone that it was because of food in Jesslyn's hair. But a letter from
the teacher said that Jesslyn wouldn't stop taking her hair down, so the
teacher trimmed it, Stirewalp said.
When asked about the incident, school principal Christopher Smith told
ABCNews.com, "I cannot comment on that." He directed questions to the
Rowan-Salisbury School district spokeswoman, who did not respond to a
request for comment.
Jesslyn's family said the haircut has changed the little girl.
"She would look at it and she would say, 'Pretty,'" her grandmother Mary Poole told WSOC. "She doesn't even get in front of the mirror anymore."
GOP Rep Blocks $450 Million In Taxpayer Aid For Egypt
Representative Kay Granger (R-TX), Chairwoman of the Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations, that oversees foreign aid is blocking $450 million in U.S. foreign aid to Egypt.
In a statement on Friday Rep. Granger said that the State Department had notified Congress of the plans to transfer the money to the new government of Egypt under the Muslim Brotherhood and President Mohammed Morshi. Morsi has been in the news recently lecturing the U.S. about freedom of speech and demanding that the U.S. impose blasphemy laws, which are from Shariah.
“This proposal comes to Congress at a point when the U.S.-Egypt relationship has never been under more scrutiny, and rightly so,” the chairwoman of the Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations said in a statement. “I am not convinced of the urgent need for this assistance and I cannot support it at this time. … I have placed a hold on these funds.”
