In my opinion, elimination of dueling was one of the WORST things to happen to Western civilization.
ReplyDeleteUnder the code Duelo, men had to be honest or risk being killed for their mendacity. Honor MEANT SOMETHING! It was valuable enough to trade one's very LIFE for its preservation!
Paper contracts were superfluous in such a world - intended more to ensure there were no misunderstandings than anything else - because what MATTERED WAS THE HANDSHAKE!
Our world is a despicable place by comparison...
